[Q] am i really on MDL even if i says MDB? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

so even if im on a MDB baseband and ive flashed MDL roms but my baseband still says MDB afterwards.. it updated me to MDL? Because ive noticed that after flashing serval MDL roms my baseband does not change. That sounds kinda fishy to me that it wouldnt say MDL. i was thinking that i needed to flash to MDL to insure it will work properly with MDL roms. i was about to odin a MDL root injected rom once i found one to fix this issue but now im skeptical since i think im aready on MDL. Your modem is your baseband? Can i just flash a MDL modem and it will show MDL afterwards not MDB in the about phone. How come it doesn't change when i flash a MDL rom. i rooted and flashed on the a stock MDB baseband and its read the same a dozen roms later. i also rolled back in odin my friends OTA updated MDL to MDB so i could use moto chopper to get root. it rolled back fine. I was able to get root with moto chopper but it still read MDL even afterwards. I was pretty sure it was on MBD even though it didnt say so.

Thanks for the link, but even after flashing the MDL modem in odin it still shows that im on UVUAMDB. is that right? shouldnt it show that im on UVUAMDL now? is it only a s4 problem? i heard on a youtube video that the baseband reads the same but DID update. i've flashed dozens of modems on my s1, s2 and s3 and i knew the modem changed because it say what modem im on. i just want to make sure im using the best modem for my area. i am having an issue with death star 4.0. i use to get a strong lte signal at my home now i barley get 4g and it goes on and off mostly off. lte does work if i drive down the street but most of the time i dont have internet connection at all then it pops up for a couple of minutes at like 4 bars then back to no connection figured it might have been a problem with the modem. other roms i used i havent had any issues with data yet. just test driving this rom because a buddy of mine wants it. i personally prefer aosp roms.

I did the same as you; got the phone with MDB and wasn't on the stock ROM for more than a day or so. It took a few flashes for my baseband to report as MDL once that was out.

[Q] Where is this 4.4.2 modem people keep referring to?

I flashed the Root66 KitKat update for Wind Mobile using Odin. As I was looking through the settings I noticed there were no APNs set. I googled for Wind's APN configuration and manually entered them (before I even tested data, perhaps it was working regardless).
So far I've seen a number of mentions warning against flashing the 4.4.2 modem before flashing the 4.4.2 firmware update. However, I've yet to see the modem posted anywhere. The most recent one in the baseband thread was for 4.3. What am I missing?
Normally 4.3 modem will be working for 4.4 too but you should not have older modem then 4.3
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
It hasn't been posted for that same reason, so nobody will attempt to flash.. Anyone can make a flashable zip for the modem, that it why we are letting people know what happens when you try to flash on older firmware
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Ill still post the modems in the near future, but wanted to first get that warning out so as many people as possible already know about it when I do. Flashing the 4 4.2 modem on 4.3 firmware has bricked quite a few devices in the Spirit and AT&T forums already. And despite all our efforts, we have yet to get the debrick method to work
That said, if you have a need for the modem, ill get it for you as soon as I can.
And just fyi, after updating to 4.4.2, you cannot use any older modems. They won't brick the device, but you won't have a working radio/signal.

Heya Doc
I have a Gs3 T999v from Videotron and have been running the 4.3 modem since early this year. I'm currently running CM11 4.4.4.
I was wondering if it would be possible to provide a link for their 4.4.2 modem so I can give it a shot. I know I won't be able to come back from it, but reception with the 4.3 has not been that hot and I've been meaning to get those kinks out. Also since the phone is nearing the end of it's life, at least to me, I don't mind the extra risk. Even if it should technically be entirely safe to do so since i'm running 4.4.2+
Cheers!

[Q] drop service on aosp..

i seem to be having problems maintaining service in areas i know i should have it. i was on insane kit kat previously, i used to have to put in airplane mode or hot reboot just to get service again. everytime i would turn screen off it would drop service again. i even flashed the nb4 modem...so i switched to gpe 4.4.4 had great service..now again...in areas i had 4g i have nothing...not sure what to do at this point..tried both touchwiz and aosp roms...tried nb4...frustrated...anyone have any clue as to what else i am doing wrong? i alwasys enable roaming...always change network if needed to the most options...at a loss....

So you did the update to 4.3? Get phone info from playstore and under firmware info it will tell you what bootloader you are currently on.

m919uvuamdl is my bootloader...ummm its also identical to the baseband version...not sure if that means anything...
Check your baseband version in settings, more, about device see if it matches up. To my understanding, you had flashed the NB4 modem correct? It might have failed

Yes Odin the NB4 modem, and no it does not change when you flash ROMs.. It probably just failed to flash, make sure you flash it twice
no go...

Its not updating the bootloader, its updating the modem
Having the same exact issue - cell signal was working to make calls when I got the phone and for a while on an older SOKP rom.
Flashed a newer version and now signal is weaker, data/text works, but making a call fails saying "out of service area" and cell signal completely drops out for 10-15sec before returning for data/text.
I've flashed FROM MDL modem to MK2 and NB4 both and no improvement.
Flashed back to the older SOKP version, no fix.
Flashed other AOSP/GPE roms, no fix.
Flashed Wicked v10, no fix.
Flashed back to stock, no fix.
Flashed back MDL modem, no fix.
Checked IMEI, not stolen or blacklisted.
This is an SGH-M919 S4, but is unlocked (otherwise would not be getting ANY data/text signal either).
My next step is to make sure AT&T has the correct IMEI in their system and see if that helps at all.
But I'm really at my wits' end as to why it all of a sudden flaked out for phone calls.
[UPDATE] Went to AT&T and updated my IMEI number in their system. Signal strength has improved enough and I'm not able to make calls.

What's the deal with lte radio?

hey guys I'm on 4.2.2 still. Rooted it and deleted the galaxy walking app, so haven't been able to do legit update, and with working alot just haven't fooled with it. Anyway I'm off and have time, want to come up to kitkat, am I not able to update my LTE radio? I'm reading and searching before turning to asking, but all I'm seeing is if I update it my sound will act up. Am I stuck on an old radio now? Was hoping for improved signal, can I go stock, update and reroot and everything will be current?? Anyway any help is appreciated.
If you don't care about tripping Knox counter, just flash the NB4 firmware with Odin and you'll be good.. I recommend fenny's fixed firmware
Edit: well it will only trip if you flash custom recovery or kernel, other than that there is root method without tripping if you plan to stay stock

im not staying stock, just want the updated lte radio on it. thinking of going lg g3 since sammy become such a pain in the ass. I've flashed stock and am updating official kitkat now, i guess that will update my modem and lte radio also, i'll reroot after that and throw something on there
If you are updating officially there shouldn't be a reason to manually update anything
i was just trying to save time, my home internet is crappy ( 100.00 bucks a month for 5mb, more like 1-3 mb) and you have to use wireless to update. I'm on kit now, abut to root and find a rom

There is a thread in general specifically for updating radios for those of us still on MDL. If you were to have followed that guide you would have updated your radio without any sound problems, would still be KNOX free, and would still be able to have the option to run 4.2.2, 4.3, and 4.4.x ROMs flawlessly.

i've been searching here for years on everything. Unless you stay in the loop everything is just cluttered. Even rooting, I'm looking and reading threads from pre 4.4.2 where chainfire link was last updated in 2013, it sucks searching here. And I thank you guys for the help. I'm rooted now and didnt want to ota, but everything I found to read said I could update the modem but not the LTE radio without sound issues... I must of missed something. LOL, I had a ton of tabs open from searches before posting. Been rooting since iden on nextels in early 2000's so it's just basic info I need thats hard to find here , tons of threads I guess. Anyway lets a get rom on this thing..

I totally agree and understand. I've pretty much been tinkering around the S4 forums since a few weeks after release (before I even purchased my S4) and have followed pretty well everything from square one so it's pretty easy to remember THAT I've read something but not remember WHERE I read it... Looking back through the Q&A and General threads, I couldn't imagine just now getting into the S4.

I would be interested in that thread... I have updated my GSM modem (modem.bin) to NB4 but as I understood it, the LTE part is tied to the bootloader. So, those of us with MDL have to retain the MDL LTE radio. If it is possible to update the LTE radio, without the sound/wifi problems, and retain MDL bootloader and thus no Knox, I'd love a link!

Anything special updating your phone?

Just wondering if there's anything special or cool about getting your phone updated to the newest version available, I got my phone already with a custom rom on it(modified), can't update it thru OTA, or 4.2.2. is till a pretty decent Version to sit and and still kick ass? ;p
IMO, i like KitKat (4.4+) more than Jellybean (4.3-). You can update via Kies if you want but you can't go back. Or you can just stay with the bootloader you have now and just flash custom ROMs, kernels and modem. 4.3+ has KNOX security but if you don't have a warranty then tripping the "KNOX counter" is nothing to worry about.
Nah, dont have a warranty on it. Got it with a custom rom, i guess some1 flashed it before selling it to me, it runs good n wut not, just was wondering wut i might have been missing out n w.e. xD if newer versions improve battery life consumption, makes it faster, etc, then it sounds good xD ill prolly try thru kies later n see if it goes thru
You dont HAVE to upgrade. Try Insane KitKat. Its a great custom ROM. Fast and good battery life. And if you download the sickness mods v5 (4.4.2) before he uploads v6(4.4.4), you can add whatever you want from the AROMA options.
Never used any of those custom roms.
On other hand, today i opened my phone to do some stuff on it, and it felt like some1 touched it(one of my bros), it wanted me to restart my phone to upgrade to 4.3 update. I guess somehow i got t-mobile OTA update and they clicked on it and downloaded the 700mb+ file. Oh well i guess, how good is the 4.3? Much better then 4.2.2? Or so so?
The new nh7 modem is tight. You can do this update because you are still on the MDL bootloader.

An OTA update will update your whole firmware. You might get another update for NH7 after you do that one.
Ahh I see, but OTA's don't usually change your bootloader eh? Just everything else.

Oh well I guess. Someone took my phone while playing games, and downloaded the new OTA, now it's going to keep bugging me to update it. Loved it at 4.2.2. Hope the nh7 is going to be better, heard tons of ppl having battery draining, bad reception, etc, maybe just a small % of ppl. not sure o.o Someone said nh7 is going to be smooth and fast, etc, haha that would be great rofl.
I updated with Odin and then flashed Insane NH7 ROM and haven't have any problems. But I have seen people saying bad things about their signal. I guess it's a hit or miss

Once you update whether OTA or Odin, you will have to root again. You can ignore the update. There is a way to stop the notifications, just use Google.

How good is that insane rom? I mainly use my gs4 for calling, navigation, listening to music(downloaded/streaming), streaming movies sometimes thru wifi, games sometimes, use apps to remove wasted ram/Junk files/help with battery drain, etc. Main thing is really i need is the good signal at all times, so navigation and all that crap works awesome, calling, net. Tbh id love to remove all the unwanted bloatware that i never use(but that can be done by rooting). Did you stay on mdl bootloader, n just flashed ur custom rom eh?

If all you've done is download the OTA but you haven't actually applied it AND you are still on the 4.2.2 MDL bootloader, I'd say leave your bootloader on MDL. I'm not saying don't run updated ROMs, I'm just saying not to take an official update. Use Odin to flash the newest modem and use custom recovery to flash any of the 4.4.x ROMs in the Android Development section, Original Android Development, or Unified Development sections. If you use custom recovery to flash the newer ROMs you still get the benefits of having updated firmware, you just don't end up having KNOX. Myself, along with numerous other users here, are still on the MDL bootloader, NH7 modem, and running modified/stock 4.4.4 NH7 TouchWiz ROM with no problems to speak of. The only thing about keeping the old bootloader, the only modem you can update is your GSM modem, not LTE; although as I said, I really haven't noticed any drop in reception... I still get full LTE whenever I'm in an area which has LTE penetration...

Should i upgrade my modem or anything to 4.4.4 version, or get a custom rom? I'm also running on network: LTE/GSM/WCDMA, or should i use something else that would run better everywhere? ;p I'm on simple mobile atm which under t-mobile i guess. Also, what are cool useful apps for gs4 for rooted phones? And anything else that might be useful to add here Thanks!

Bad/no reception on T999L, need help/suggestions

These issues started with the upgrade to latest T-Mobile 4.3 software pack at the end of November. Phone operated perfectly before then. After the update, the phone would periodically not receive/place calls/texts/use data. The issue kept worsening daily. It is not related to the SIM card or location, as the card has been replaced and tested in an alternate phone where it performs perfectly.
The T999L was then consequently rooted, KNOX flagged (it's already past warranty, Samsung wouldn't give a rat's ass about it), flashed to CM11 M12 and later a variety of modems was tried. Same issues persisted. Restored to stock 4.1.2, same issues. Did 3 updates OTA to get to latest 4.3, same issues.
Messed around with 4636 menu, 2263 menu, etc. Some changes had a temporary result but nothing permanent. Calls to the phone are redirected to voicemail. When placing a call, it takes 5-10 seconds to either place it or disconnect it (as it can't connect to the network, I guess?). The bars on the phone show 3-4 bars typically, but the phone is rarely able to acquire a data connection. Again, this is not the case with other phones the SIM is tried on.
Any suggestions? I've spent probably close to 10 hours researching this and trying everything out and I am absolutely stumped. This is my mom's phone and a replacement Alcatel OneTouch Fierce 2 just "doesn't look nice", so I'm getting a fair bit of *****ing for trying to help solve this, even though it's not my fault. Would appreciate some help before Christmas.

I'd say so. Used this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987 and flashed the 4.3 basebands for T999L and T999N, total of 3. I'm thinking this is something to do with the 4.3 bootloader or basebands... any methods to go back to 4.1.2 without a brick?

If you have a T999L stick to the designated T999L modems and nothing else, or you may damage the device. If you have a 4.3 bootloader there is no way back. Have you tried to use ODIN to flash the latest NF4 firmware for your T999L and then do a factory reset using the stock recovery? I posted NF4's link in this post. Good luck.

Downloading right now, and will test. Pretty sure this is the firmware update after which this problem started occurring.
Any other ideas for what might be affecting this besides baseband? I have a feeling something else might be causing this. I'm not familiar with Samsung partitions though and what is flashed by OTA/Odin.

Well, OTA updates can sometimes fail, that's why I gave you the ODIN firmware link. It's the best help I can offer.
