Just wanted to post this set-up because it works pretty smoothly:
picture link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4K7YJ77a6K4N1hyRUo4VXM4Q3c/edit?usp=sharing
This box basically creates a wifi network and then sends (lossless) audio out via an 1/8 in. audio output:
http://www.amazon.com/iReceiver-Wi-Fi-Music-Receiver-Extender/dp/B00I0Z427E
I'm using Airstream (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kineticgamestudios.airtunes.android), which I've found works better than AirAudio.
I'm also running a Tasker sequence, so when the Wifi box boots up, the Nexus 5 automatically opens my music app and sets the system volume to an appropriate level.
All in all, it's pretty smooth.
I think it's worthwhile for at least two reasons: 1) you can charge your phone without getting that ugly interference with an audio cable plugged in. 2) it's much louder than the output of the nexus 5 itself, so it's basically like having an amp.
How is the audio quality compared to BT?

Bluetooth sound is highly compressed and the audio quality is slightly degraded. the advantage to wifi is that it is basically lossless.

I was looking for more of a subjective comparison. I've tried both BT and wired audio side-by-side in my car, and while I can hear a difference, it's not enough of one to convince me to give up the convenience of BT. If you've compared BT and wifi directly and find them to be dramatically different, then this solution might be perfect for me.

Well I haven't really used Bluetooth in my car for music, only for phone calls. But I would imagine that the Wifi sound quality difference would be audible. There was a noticeable difference between using the Nexus 5 headphone output into my car stereo aux input and streaming from the Nexus 5 to the AirMobi box into the same aux input. The Wifi sound was louder and had much more low-end.
I should warn you, though, that the AirMobi is configured in such a way that you can't access mobile data when you are connected to the wifi network. I don't really mind this, because incoming calls still come through; but you can't, for example, check your email while connected to the AirMobi. If having access to mobile data while streaming wifi audio is important to you, there is this option, which is more expensive and a bit clunkier, but will fix this problem:

Looks interesting.
Could you please try using the AllCast app and check if that works with this device?
I've never streamed music over wifi before, is it possible to set this as the default playback device? I'm also getting a wireless charger for my car, I'd like to be able to have the phone automatically play music over that wifi thing when it's wirelessly charging if possible.

If you have a rooted phone, you can send all phone audio via wifi using an app like AirStream or AirAudio. That's how I have it set up.

Ive been searching around but cant seem to find any apps that would do this. seems to me like it would be quite simple to do. anyone know o something similar to able to quickly put something together?
Main reason at the moment is that i currently have a long wire diagonaly across my room to connect my laptop to my speakers. I just thorght it would be realy good if i could plug my phone into my speakers and then send music to it via bluetooth. Im sure other people have been in this situation where an audio cable has not quite been long enough.
Might be a bit harder but possibly this could work over wifi too and would be able to work from room to room. I expect this would require a pc client though..
any thorghts?
I would love to have something like this. The phone would behave like a bluetooth speaker or headphone (A2DP). This would be fantastic. I was looking for something like this a year ago, I thought I would find a software which helps me do this, but I was unable to find anything then. Maybe we can find something now.
I could try developing such a software if there is not anything of this sort already available. I would be glad if any experienced developer can provide us some starting points, keywords, etc., which would speed up the initial activities.
Use UPNP media server
the simpler solution is to use unpn media server over wifi networks
like twonkys media server. or xmbc
basically the computer where the files are stored will server the files to any network attached device including HTC through webbrowser.
I have my dish tv /Satellite decoder connected to home pc using vlc and watch the tv on my HTC HD using VLC
for sound files i directly load them over network disk
Anil
Bluetooth Audio Receiver
I've got a TV which supports bluetooth headphone. With such a software, I'd be able to use my HTC HD2 as a bluetooth headphone. This should turn the phone into a bluetooth audio reciver, rather than a transmitter.
I've been looking for this software for ages and appreciate any ideas.

yea this would have been good. was halfway through downloading xmbc when i realised it wont work in my case.. im at university and the wireless has some security issues that wont let it connect to my phone
also wireless drains quite a bit more battery than bluetooth and would probably have to plug in the phone each time you do this.
some great links though, now we need some bluetooth ones!!!
Is this what you need?

Let's see if I get that right:
You want to send BT stereo audio from your BT-enabled laptop to your phone, and plug your phone into speakers for audio output. Right?
Might be easier to get a bluetooth receiver for your speakers. There are some for your home audio system (e.g. at amazon).
What I did was get a stereo bluetooth headset receiver. You can use it as a bluetooth headset (in your car, on the bus, wherever) OR you can simply plug it into your speakers. Just be sure to find one with a 3,5mm plug (and not wired-on headphones) so that you can use your own headphones or plug in your speakers. There's a choice of fine receivers from
Nokia (BH-214, BH-500, ...)
SonyEricsson (HBH-DS205, HBH-DS980, ...)
Jabra (BT3030, ...)
or you can try and get a cheap but great one from the itech clip series.

no, I dont think so. thanks for the suggestion though!
we arnt trying to get sound from the phone to a bluetooth speaker but instead turn the phone itself into a speaker whcih can recieve audio from other bluetooth devices.
for example if watching a film on my laptop, i would like to plug my phone into my speakers, connect up the bluetooth, and watch rather than running a cable to the speakers which are a long way away.
Nik, you bet me by one...

to be honest ive actualy already ordered this:
http://shoponspot.com/bluetooth-20-a2dp-avrcp-stereo-music-receiver-and-handsfree-black/
I still would like to see this app developed as i can imagine future situations where this happens and i dont want to have to carry this around everywhere.
also people with bluetooth tvs im sure would prefure not to have to use another device all the time and occasionaly you get bluetooth headset transmitters in public places where this might be useful.
hope it is possible!
ooo wow! im a senior member now!!
well i received my bluetooth headset but unfortunatly it charges through the 3.5mm headphone jack so i am unable to leave it there to just work
Ive also tried plugging in a headphone splitter but it realy dosnt like that!! so that means every time i leave my room i will have to put the reciever on charge and every time i return i will have to turn it on and plug it in.
does anyone know if it would be possible to get the phone to work as a bluetooth audio reciever? seems like something it should be able to do
I'd like to bump this because I've been searching for ages for exactly this. I'd personally like to go one step further and have a client that would support A2DP and the handsfree protocol. The latter I would like to allow me to answer and initiate calls to my work mobile using my HD2 as though it was a bluetooth handsfree kit. Then I could use one phone for all my calls.
I can imagine a wide range of useful applications that other solutions like wifi audio streaming or a dedicated bluetooth audio receiver wouldn't match.
I wish I knew how to write software... Maybe if I ever have a few hundred hours of spare time on my hands I'll learn and write an app to do this.
i also want this.
please anyone help.
This would be great.. i currently have an nvidia shield tv and I can plug my normal wired headphones into the nvidia shield's bluetooth remote. The problem is the remote's battery life only lasts a few days when used like this. I would love to be able to use my mobile phone as a back up for when the nvidia remote battery dies. For some reason the nvidia remote won't charge unless my head phones are unplugged.
Hooroo
Has anyone figured out why high frequencies get garbled since the EG30 kernel? That's the last one I remember that did not garble. From what I've been told, the bluetooth stack is built into the kernel, not the ROM.
Could someone please clarify and perhaps offer a solution?
How about very low volume on the BT ? I paired my phone with the BT in my 2012 Ford (with SYNC) and the music plays perfectly, but I can't hear S#!T during a phone conversation...

I have a 2011 Explorer with SYNC and if memory serves, it considers the BT music volume and in-call volume 2 separate things. Once a call is made, you have to turn up the volume again to get that where you want it. Once it's turned up, it stays that way.

I'll try that but then I'll have to remember to turn it down when switching back to SiriusXM so that I dont blow my ears out.
I turned the media player volume down to 10 (as opposed to the normal 15) and it's still static on the high end.
Everything except cyanogen sucks as far as the bitpool goes and low bitpool makes bt sound like ****. I love android so much but I'm soooo disappointed in the amount of attention paid to Bluetooth sound. It's fine for audiobooks or podcasts but sucks for music.
Actually my son has a nexus s unrooted, maybe I should check that and see if music sounds OK. Maybe pure Android doesn't suck its just the touchwizs and senses of the world that make it terrible.

Wow... I was debating getting a Bluetooth speaker today. Didn't realize there was an issue like this with our phone.
Thanks for the insight. I wonder if any dev could do anything about this.

I have had a very different experience with in-car bluetooth audio. I just installed an iSimple expansion kit (uses the factory harness/plug and play) into my vehicle, and it sounds excellent! I have the phone volume turned all the way up, changing the level on the stereo instead. It seems to me that it isn't any quieter than XM, FM/AM, or CDs, and I like having all my music in Google Music and Pandora instead of the giant case of CDs I used to carry around. The call quality is average, better than OnStar if you've used it, worse than a call with good signal. The person on the other end sounds great, but I've heard that the driver always seems quieter than through the phone mic. My friends bluetooth audio in his Kia Soul does not sound as good as mine does, but the call quality is sometimes better.
Anyway, just my 2c. Cheers!
I have been using bluetooth audio and phone calls on stock rooted EL29 ROM with the Rogue Gunslinger kernel in both my car as well as a pair of headphones, and the audio comes through crystal clear. The car has a Kenwood KDC-BT945U head unit that supports A2DP and AVRCP, as well as hands-free calling, and I have no problems with either calls or music streaming. In the home, I have a Logitech bluetooth wireless speaker adapter plugged into my AVR, and it also sounds perfectly clear. There is never a hint of hissing, popping, dropouts, etc. I suggest that anyone who has bluetooth issues try my rom/kernel setup. If it does not work, you can blame the Ford or whatever bluetooth setup you have because the phone itself is perfectly good at bluetooth audio streaming. Maybe not out of the box, but with my setup I have no problems. For the record, I have high-end (near audiophile grade) audio equipment in both my car and home, so I know what good music sounds like. One caveat though, don't expect bluetooth streaming to sound as good as a wired connection. There is quite a bit of compression going on, but the difference is barely discernable in the car, probably due to the road noise. In the home though I have much higher quality speakers, and I can perceive a larger difference, but unless I'm listening to classical music in FLAC format, it's negligible.

I have noticed the crappy quality as well.... but here is some good news... they fixed it with ICS. I'm currently running the FB17 leaked build, and the quality is PERFECT. I'm an audiophile, so I pay close attention to the sound quality. and am very very happy the addressed this issue in ICS.

I have to agree, I have uConnect in my new Durango and was pissed when BT streaming did not work (it sounded like a constant pause/unpause and fastforward all at once). I just by happenstance tried it on FB17 and FB21 and it was perfect! Although the builds are not great yet so I went back to Calk 2.9 and itchin for a great ICS build to get that back!

The BT sounds very well for music but during a phone conversation, the volume of the other party is way too low. If you were to increase the car's volume to hear the other person, it will decrease your microphone's sensitivity to a point where the other person cannot understand what you're saying (to prevent feedback)... It may be my FORD SYNC, but it worked beautifully on my old Blackberry. I will wait for ICS update and hope they addressed this problem.
Thanks!

I sure hope you're right! It's so much nicer to use my steering wheel controls then to reach over to my windshield-mounted phone and push the tiny on-screen buttons with Google Music. I'm also an audiophile and couldn't take the low quality sound of BT-Audio. Thanks for the hope!
I was on Paranoid Android 2.16, I used the Bluetooth music and calls in my 2012 Civic Si and sound quality was perfect. I switched to FI27 to give it a try and the Bluetooth sound quality went to crap. Has anyone looked further into the kernel theory? Anybody know a good kernel to use with latest update? That can be pushed with Odin? Thanks for any updates or suggestions.
I'd like to keep bluetooth on in my car for taking calls, but the phone seems to automatically output audio through that as well, even if a 3.5mm cable is connected. I searched through the settings to no avail. Is it possible to use BT strictly for calls while still outputting music through aux? I mostly listen through Pandora, and I'm on CM7.
I forgot about this post, but it looks like it didn't get any replies. Bump!

Solution
Yes, it is possible, while connected to your car,
go to settings, Wireless & networks, Bluetooth settings,
search for your car's Bluetooth name and long press it, this should show you a "pop up" window,
click on "Options...", there you have something called Profiles which allow you to control the behavior of that particular Bluetooth device,
You should have 2 boxes ticked, Phone and Media,
tick media off and your device will only work for calls!
Hope it helps!
Best Regards,
P.S: If your phone connects via Bluetooth to your car and streams music, than I must assume your car supports A2DP, in which case, you will gain nothing of audio quality for using the aux input... just saying.

Oh man, thanks so much. I can't believe it took this long to get this straightforward of an answer. I'll have to try it out today.
As far as the audio quality goes, I feel like there's a subjective difference; some sort of flakiness or bits of static when going through BT. But maybe it's just a placebo effect; I'll do some more trials.

Well, it's not impossible.. You could have a low quality Bluetooth receiver but since it is built in with your car it seems unlikely.. either way, what matters is you get your solution and your peace of mind! (I know how I get when something like this happens and I can't figure out a solution! xD)
Don't forget to post back.
Best Regards,
Yep, works flawlessly. I haven't done enough testing to see whether my car sees audio differences between aux and BT, but I'm at least able to use aux separately if I find a difference.
Can the Bluetooth audio lag be fixed?
I guess not.
I think that too :-\ Every Android device I tested my Samsung HS 3000 with produced roughly the same amount of lag.
Seems odd to me that they can't fix this crap. I hate my iPad but at least the BT doesn't suck.

Bluetooth Lag
I had (and still have) the exact problem with my TF101. The only workaround I found was to use BSPlayer for video, which has an adjustable audio offset. +500ms was fine. An app that detects the type of BT headphone and automatically compensates for it would be good.

My problem is I use my tablet to pair with my hearing aids and rely on the device for multiple uses; I lost most of my hearing from an RPG blast. The aids I use are made by Siemens and their bluetooth interface app is only made for android. This allows me to stream audio directly to the hearing aids without blasting the audio output to everyone around me. Video calls are generally much easier since I can lip read and visualize expresssions to understand the context of spoken words. When the audio lags the video the whole thing goes bad really quick. I was hoping for some easy fix but it doesn't appear that's gonna happen.
Hey everyone, basically since the first day that i got this phone, the bluetooth been a pain for me, when any device is connected (car multimedia, speaker, headphones etc) to the phone and i will play music via the device thats connected, the audio will cut for a second every few minutes, tried looking for a fix without any luck, really considering switching the phone because of that, any possible fix ?

definitely only Bluetooth, i'm using wired headphones on a daily basis without any interference and i'm using Spotify and Youtube.
I am still trying to track down the problem I am having, but it definitely does it on wired headsets, too. It seems to get really bad for a while and then goes a while without doing it.
