More information added in my 3rd post below...
I've searched the forums, googled and tried praying to the smartphone gods and I can't find an answer. Maybe you guys can help.
I downloaded a ruu that got half way through the process when it said I was using the wrong ruu and to instigate the recovery procedure - which I did. Unfortunately the phone didn't go into the white startup screen (the one you get if you hold the return key while turning on) with the recovery option, when rebooted, therefore preventing it's recovery.
The phone has the green charging light when pluged into usb but there is no 'HTC' screen or anything when trying to boot it. Just a black screen. I removed the battery and all I get is a vibration when turning it on and that's it, although on a few occasions the buttons on the bottom of the unit have lit up but to no avail.
Forgive me if the details are vague but it's all I have. I hope someone can help...

Do you have slcd desire and did you use the correct ruu?
Do you have custom recovery ?

I think I used the incorrect ruu; that's why it sent me to recovery mode. I think it's AMOLED which is why I picked the ruu I did but it is a 2.1 phone and I was trying to get to 2.2. I think I used the wrong ruu...
No, I don't have custom recovery.
Thankyou for helping so quickly.

Anyone have any idea? I get the feeling this phone is truely bricked...
Which ruu did you use to begin with? Was it previously branded?
A generally safe way to recover any phone is to flash the froyo ruu, but you may need a goldcard for that. Start the phone in fastboot mode to get the ruu to work.

The issue is it won't go into fastboot. Just a black screen when I try to turn on the power. The ruu failed and said it couldn't see the phone and to remove the battery and then power on to recover the original rom - that's when it started not working.
I know how to get the fastboot screen but with this phone the screen will not come on.
The ruu i used was: RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
It was branded to t-mobile and was trying to debrand it. I created a goldcard as well. I have all the drivers needed on my PC but my PC can't see the Desire via USB. USB bricked solutions won't work because I can't get the phone to power up - well the buttons on the bottom light up and the phone vibrates but that's it.
Perhaps my first bricked phone?
Al
don't worry. because of the feedback you are getting (buttons lighting up, green charge light and vibrate on startup), it is not a true brick. it should be recoverable.
edit: try this (edited from here)
(Remember to remove PB99IMG.zip from your GoldCard before copying update.zip)
1. Make sure the update.zip (NOT update.zip.zip!) file is on your goldcard and correctly named.
2. Take the battery out first to ensure the phone is powered off. Then hold vol down and press the power button, and hold vol down for about 5 seconds. That will get you into the bootloader even though you can't see it.
3. Press vol down once. This will select recovery.fastboot is already selected
4. Press the power button once. This will start the recovery.this will start fastboot The phone will vibrate briefly.
4a. plug in your desire into your computer. there should be a *ding* sound from the computer recognising it.
4b. Run the .exe you have downloaded. wait for it to finish. TBH I havent installed an ruu from an .exe before. I presume it is pretty straightforward. after this installs you should be able to reboot your device and be away.
5. Wait 20 seconds or so. Then press vol up and the power button and wait a few seconds. You'll now be in system recovery.
6. Press vol down once to select 'apply sdcard:update.zip'.
7. Press the power button once to start the recovery.
8. After a few seconds press the power button once again.

if you don't trust the ruu you have got, I recommend you download a fresh one that suits the screen you have (whether it be slcd or amoled).
Yeah I have tried that but I am downloading another ruu as I type.
The hboot on this phone was 0.75. Can you (or anyone else) recommend a ruu to suit?
Thanks for the input. I'll keep plugging away...

Just make sure you know which screen version you have and find a ruu file that has a higher build number then the one that you have installed, if its lower you will get a bootloader error
Hope this help!

Ok. The phone isn't bricked but I still have the black screen.
The update.zip didn't work as per here but I have successfully installed ruu:
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed
I still get the BSOD (Black Screen Of Death), though.
Anyone have any thoughts on a ruu I should install or do I need to try a different process? Also, how do I find my screen version? I can't see the screen - is there a prog I can use???
Thanks for the help.

I dont think there is a program to identify them, I read elsewhere that even HTC doesn't have systems to show which IMEIs were shipped with SLCD or AMOLED displays at this time.
ala the SLCD Brick page, have you tried the ruu they provide? http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...1.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe
the login and p/w are shipped

You, Sir, are my new idol. That ruu did the trick. The desire is now running super fast and is everything I ever hoped for.
A big thankyou to you and to everyone else who helped guide me through this process.
Cheers!!!

Now you've got that ROM the next step is to go to 2.2 (which you can do now or wait for the OTA updates to start again). Just make sure you leave your gold card in (if you had to use one in the first place)

I have saved the gold card for just this thing - the phone had a 4Gb card (my gold card) but I use a 32Gb for my music. <n00b>How do I get the phone to 2.2 (do I use another ruu?) and is it worth it?</n00b>
Al
Click on the version number in my signature (it's a link to the full RUU)
Yay!
Nevermind. The phone is updating automatically. How cool is that?
Thanks Eddy.
I have been having 'successful phone upgrading celebratory' drinks so bear with me...
Is it worth going 2.1 -> 2.2?? I seem to recall reading some where that 2.2 ain't all that it's cracked up to be - or am I mistaken?
Cheers,
Al
It's better than 2.1 IMO

Hi everyone,
I can't post in the developers section cos I'm a new user so I hope you guys can point me in the right direction.
Okay to give you a brief summary:
My phone was rooted by using the latest Unrevoked 3.32
Then I did a NADROID Backup of my files.
Then I took S-Off With AlphaRev 1.8 Custom HBOOT.
Everything was successful and it said S-OFF.
Now when I boot up my phone normally all I get is the "Why So Serious?" image by unrevoked.
I restored my backup but still get the same image.
I'm guessing it's to do with the HBOOT version and my Radio version?
Please check attached images.
You do have to change the splash if you want to, thats why the image is how it is because it has changed from the HTC one, to AlphaRev's. Your radio is so old, really old. Try and install a newer one (been tested) or the newest one (get the second radio). See if that does anything for you. Just let things load up, they can take a while to do.
Thanks for the reply.
The thing is, i don't mind the splash, it's kinda cool.
The problem is the fact it just hangs, just stays on the splash screen.
I'll try what you suggested, unless others have another suggestion?
If you wanted S-Off badly, you could just download the correct RUU and then freshly install the stock ROM. It would wipe everything and you would need to run Unrevoked and AlphaRev again. But nontheless, you would have S-Off. Or you could download the stock rooted ROM and then S-Off from that.
Just an update.
The problem has been solved thanks to GoogleJelly's steps in pm.
Why did you sort that out by pm?
Maybe there are other people experiencing the same problem and are interested in the solution too...
just sayin...
lol yeah true, let me ask his permission if I can post the pm
Okay here are the steps I got:
If your able to get into the recovery then you're ok. You can try to install a stock Froyo ROM if you like, pre-rooted. See how that turns out.
If not, then I guess all you can do is install the RUU. You need the correct on that represents your installed radio so you can update. It will reset everything and I mean everything so you will need to root and S-Off again. Hopefully that will of fixed everything. But I don't recommend restoring. I have had some weird stuff happen to me through restoring before but your welcome to try it again.
To Get Into Recovery
1) Turn off your phone
2) Hold down volume down and press the power button
3) Wait for it to check your SD Card then press vol down to highlight recovery and press power button to select it
4) Should take up to 30 seconds to boot into recovery
Whilst in the recovery, you're able to mount USB to transfer the pre-rooted stock ROM across and then you can install it that way.
I hope this helps you out. If you need anymore help, just ask.

Hello,
well, I think I did a mistake... Yeah, my Desire Z (Germany) does not turn on anymore. Everything that happens is if the USB cable is inserted and then I insert the battery, the red LED turns on.
I tried starting it with power button, holding Vol Down, etc. But: the device is dead. No vibrating, no screen, no light.
The procedure was the following: I had DoubleShot before, but because the keyboard is creaking, I wanted to let it be repaired, so I wanted to set it back to defaults for warranty.
The standard ROM didn't want to load as PC10IMG.zip and CWM said that this file would be bad. I tried several original ROM's.
I had the flashed hboot for DoubleShot, so i thought, this could be the reason and tried to set hboot back.
I followed this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=999796
I dunno, I used the tutorial for the Desire Z, not G2. I had ENG S-OFF before, 100% sure.
The thing worked, so I tried to reboot.
Shut it down. Power on. Nothing happens.
Nice... I think this is a hard brick, isn't it?
Does anyone has an idea how to fix it? Only possible per JTAG and losing warranty?
Greets and thanks,
Keynot
Well I found a very annoying new thing.
If I hold Vol up+down, then plug in the USB cable, the Vision vibrates 3 times and the GREEN LED has now turned on!
Ehm, I think this is called the "Download mode". Is this unknown till now? I only found one member who has written that, no tutorial or similar.
Using Zadig, attached for Heimdall, I can now see my Desire Z as USB Device!!
It's called "Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM".
But.. I have the problem, that I cannot flash the Desire Z using Heimdall, because it cannot find compatible devices (well... it was programmed for Samsungs, so no wonder about it). Do you know any other programs that could do the trick?
The RUU doesn't detect the device neither. But I expected that too.
Any possibility now to flash a new hboot on the device?
Would be sooo nice!
Greetings,
Keynot
You can try it via fastboot if you still have the eng hboot on it and then flash the boot again, but when you cannot acces the device via fastboot or adb, i think you have a problem...
The download mode is useless to us, you need to use a Qualcomm tool, with signed data, so we can't use that.
Sorry to say, but if you can't get to hboot anymore it seems you are fully bricked.
-Nipqer
Thank you for your answers.
I can't access HBoot or fastboot.
But isn't there any Qualcomm tool that lets me flash a new hboot on it?
And if not: I still have warranty, couldn't I send it back to HTC and let it be repaired? Can they see that it was my fault?
Thanks,
Keynot
There is a Qualcomm tool, but as I said its useless to us because we need certain keys.
Your best bet is to send it in to htc, it should still be covered.

Hi there,
I had a very nice trip with my rooted desire with a miui rom on it for now maybe, 1 year smthg.
Recently, i bought a new µSD and wanted to prepare it for my phone ; i downloaded rom manager, and tried the "partition SD" functionality, which told me that i would have to update my clockworkmod, which i tried with the "update recovery" in it, which failed.
After a while, i found that i forgot to S-OFF my phone, and that was the reason why i couldn't update the recovery. So i decided to S-OFF. Unfortunately, my phone didn't went to the last step, and stayed stuck at the boot screen until its battery died, maybe an hour after.
I began a long journey trying to figure out if my phone was bricked or not, since i wasn't able to boot it up ; only the hboot was responding. I tried MANY ways, MANY posts, i tried to flash with a nand backup without success ('access denied'), i tried to flash just the recovery (same or 'signature failed'). I tried to put a PB99IMG.zip file from alpharev into my phone without any success...
BUT. I succeed in recovering my phone with putting a stock PB99IMG.zip from shipped-roms and it boots up very well on a crappy sense rom.
From that, i tried hard to root it again since i want to try again to S-OFF it, and after that, return back to my beloved miui rom. I'm stuck because of a mysterious problem into my phone. It looks like it doesn't like the third step which (i guess) requires a boot script. So nothing happens to it, it freezes to the bootscreen, while unrevoked says "waiting for reboot..." endlessly.
I succeeded once (only) in passing this step, but then unrevoked said to me something like : "Internal error: failed to unlock NAND flash?" which seems crazy since i'm in a 0.93 HBOOT (since the RUU reset). I hadn't any Superuser app nor signs of rooting ("su" command failed in terminal).
For now, i'm trying to root it via the Visionary app, but i don't think it will work.
If anyone has any suggestion in making things better, i'll be pleased to hear !
PS : I'm writing this post because i feel it could be full of useful infos for anyone else stuck with a "bricked" phone.
use this guide to S-OFF, install custom recovery and root.
read all the instructions, several times.
oh and rom manager is often not recommended for this phone as it can often cause usb bricks. once s-off you can flash different recoveries via fastboot or android flasher.
use gparted or 4EXT recovery to partition your sd card.
Unfortunately, it seems like the time for me to change phone has come.
While i was doing an other time a RUU reset because of loopboot created by an unrevoked related bug, my phone decided to stop, and die. The battery is still charged — i can feel the fuzz with putting my tongue on it — but the phone just doesn't turn on ; it doesn't show the charging led when i put it on charge...
I'm currently looking for an other device, such as the Desire S (because of the size, mainly ; others blockbusters are too big)
If someone has an idea to make my Desire turn on again, anything i can do, i will do.
Thx for the answer, the guide link, and all !

don't just go flashing RUU's randomly, you may get amoled/slcd incompatibility for instance, which is what this might be.
try reading the troubleshooting guide, you can probably save your phone.
read carefully before you do anything in future...this situation could probably have been avoided
Thanks a lot again
I should be more patient when trying to do things, but it's kinda annoying not to have it working...
Btw, i wasn't acting *that* randomly (at least, for me) : since anytime i was using unrevoked was blocking the phone onto the boot screen, the only way i found to restore it was flashing it again. But yeah, maybe it was done too randomly though...
The guide you gave me is full of good advices, but the only thing that could be matching for my case is a bad RUU flashing ; this doesnt look to be my case, since even if i put my phone on charge, the charging led doesn't turn on. The phone doesn't warm after pressing the power button... It looks like there's something related to electricity inside that have been broken somewhere... Don't you think so ?
[EDIT] I found some guys having my (new) problem here : http://www.htcdesireforum.com/htc-d...h-on-or-respond-to-a-charger-what's-happened/ I'm quite relax since it's not a "0day" problem : lots of people are talking about it, so i have some solutions : wait and pray, if not, try another battery, or let it dead.

that problem sounds different as that was posted ages ago, and they weren't messing around with rooting and RUUs...
i don't think you should 'wait and pray, try another battery, or let it dead'
can you get to recovery/bootloader/fastboot at all? please post more details. if you can then it's probably not bricked.
i'm unsure of whether you've actually tried anything in the troubleshooting guide. try [2] advanced boot problems, S-ON. create a goldcard and try the WWE RUU
if none of it makes sense ask directly in that thread
and if you get the RUU to boot, don't use unrevoked...follow my 1st reply...
I stopped all the things i was doing when i had your reply, trust me !
As i said, i can't get the device to be powered on ; since, i'm not able to have any access to hboot, fastboot, nor adb. The phone does not charge when plugged to a charger neither to a computer. The led stays black, and the battery doesn't get warm (which normally does when charging).
Since the phone doesn't turn on, the guide you gave me is useless (but i learnt a lot from it, so thanks for that). The only section which *could* have been useful was the one talking about wrong RUU flashing with SLCD off ; but since my screen was working, and the symptoms are different (my phone is not recognized by the computer), this is not describing my problem definitly.
Be sure that if i can boot that phone once again, i'll follow your 1st reply and won't use unrevoked on it ever...
I'm trying now to find an other battery, to know which from the battery xor the mobo of the phone is dead. If battery, i'll just buy a new one ; if mobo, i'll buy a Desire S, since my phone reached the warranty limit, and i would have to pay to repair it...
Hello everyone.
Ich have a big problem with my HTC Desire. My device is dead. No Bootloader, no Recovery no Start, Display is dark - nothing. I maybe think bootloader is broken. Battery is full, LED is green. Desire will not detect from computer (WinXP, 7).
The Desire has been working perfect. I installed Rom Manager from the Google Market and installed Recovery. Now Desire is dead.
Anyone knows a piece of advice?
thx Peter
sorry for my bad english
The problem was ROM manager. It is bad (and unnecessary) for the Desire unfortunately. I also did this years ago...
It should not break the bootloader though. Pull out the battery to make sure phone is completely off. Hold volume down first, then hold power button. It should boot to bootloader. If not, try back button, then power button to get to fastboot.
Then only way to recover the phone is to use an RUU. I recommend the 2.3.3 WWE GB RUU.
Flash it using the PB99IMG.zip method. Details in bortak's troubleshooting sticky at top of Q&A. Find the RUU searching shippedROMs.com. You put the PB99IMG.zip on the root of the sdcard using a card reader, then boot into bootloader mode and flash it. This will wipe all your phone data unfortunately, but sdcard contents are safe.
Once you get it running again, use revolutionary to S-OFF the device. You can then change hboot / recovery easily using fastboot commands, recommend 4EXT recovery. DO NOT use ROM manager on the Desire.
