[Q] Galaxy 3 SGH-I747M Telus - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a Canadian Telus provided GalaxyIII SGH-I747M, it is rooted, twrp recovery installed and I am confused when it comes looking for compatible roms. I get conflicting information everywhere but have narrowed it down to I can use ATT roms on my Telus phone, please confirm this. My question is, my twrp recovery downloaded the d2can build but ATT is d2att, do I need to change this in my recovery (if possible), or just leave it at d2can to install ATT roms. If my terminology is off I apologize (noob).
Thanks for your time.

Look at the bootloaders in the updater-script of the custom ROM you want to install. If you see your bootloader, you should be fine.
The latest version of TWRP for your phone can flash a ROM designed for the d2att.
I had problems with TWRP so I switched to the latest version of Philz Touch which can be flashed via Odin or from TWRP.

Whats the latest recovery I can flash to my rooted phone so I can install custom roms

Hi,
I have a Bell Samsung Galaxy S3 rooted as per the thread instructions, and a copy of CWN 5.5.0.4 (All Variants) installed as well. I want to start trying out the JB Roms (Namely, the JellyBro one available for the phone) and I read in the thread that I needed the latest version of CWM Installed. I'm not sure which one will work if I flashed it to my phone correctly, so I need to know which one I can flash for my phone. Can I get it rom the CWM site (Says AT&T S3 is up to 6.0.1.2) but is the AT&T version the one I need for sure? I also tried via ROM Manager, it doesn't list my model phone for some reason.
Thanks in advance.

I used something like 5.8 and then tried TWRP. I only use TWRP, now. I got the info from TonyStark's att directory thread or maybe the ATT Ultimatum rom thread. Either will work. I've got an ATT but everything I've read says the Bell and ATT model are the same.

Thanks for the help. I used CWM 6.0.1.2 for ATT and it flashed perfectly! Now, i'm just trying to choose what ROM to go with, and if I have to install a KERNEL for it or not.
Thanks again.

How to flash custom rom on Canadian variants ( i747m ) or att roms

For All of the people who are getting status 7 error while flashing a custom rom on att based rom on their canadian variants i747m...there is a simpler way to do things.
First let me tell you that hardware wise both are same phone but ATT has implemented radio software differently than candian versions. So never flash att radio on candian phones. This may or may not break your phone.
So, if you are getting status 7 while flashing the rom through CWM, read the error. Usuallly when u flash a rom through CWM, there is a check based on RIL( based of build, prop) to make sure you are flashing right rom to right device. Now ATT has device model name of d2att while canadian variants have d2can and this is the reason why cwm is preventing the flashing of rom.
You can successfully flash the rom by editing build.prop two ways, either on rom file or on device itself. just go to /system folder and change the d2att to d2can and it would flash the rom successfully.
Or if you have already rooted the phone you could easialy download app for editing build.prop and make changes. That way you dont have to modify file everytime you flash a another rom.
This is what I do.
Grab Total Commander from the market (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=total+commander). This lets you edit files within a zip. Next use Total Commander and go to the ROM flashable, \META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script. Long press it and choose edit. Then erase the first line that refers to d2att, save and exit.
Flash ROM. After backing up / wiping / etc.
Does this only need to be on the first flash and its good after that?
Aka...Stock to CM change ur stocks build.prop to d2att...and if you ever wanna use a canadian rom do the reverse?
The only time I got error 7 was when I first started flashing roms for this device. Updated to the latest cwm and haven't had an issue since.

This worked for me too. However, now my Samsung update says it can't update as my device is modified. I wonder how to correct that...
WHOOOOOAAAA YEAHHHHH THANNNKSSSSSSSSSS WORK GREATTT , rigth now have flash CM10.1 stable for d2att in a SGH-I747M and work genial, doing this step, just remove the step 1 and flash perfect,
flashing 4.4Kitkat on SGH-I747
I have an S3 SGH-I747 with Fido. I was able to flash successfully the AOKP ROM : aokp_d2att_kitkat_nightly_2014-03-27.
At first, I had the ERROR status 7. Then I updated to the new CWM Recovery 6.0.4.3 touch d2att through Odin 3.09
Then I flashed the aokp_d2att
with the gapps: aokp-full_gapps-kk-20140211.zip
and it all worked fine.
hope it helps

Builds for d2att and d2can were unified under d2lte a long time ago. The d2lte builds will require the most up-to-date modems and bootloaders to work properly.
Hmm... So this means I can flash CyanogenMod 13 for [email protected] Galaxy S3 devices (My S3 is Telus and XDA doesn't have a Telus section)?
Yes, you can flash cm13 to i747m. If you get an error, you may have to edit the rom's updater script.

CM10.1 Game Q's & Choosing CWM

Hey guy
I was just wondering if people are having issues with running games such as The Simpsons: Tapped Out, and other apps like Vine while running the latest nightly builds for the S3 i747? I had an S2 that was running CM10.1 and none of those apps worked.
Secondly, I recently bricked my old S2 while flashing something on it so I'm a bit wary of doing it on my S3 so I just want to clarify some things.
1) After I root the phone, I can just download ROM Manager and use that to install CWM, correct?
2) Then all I do is download the latest CM10.1 nightly build w/ gApps and flash both of them through CWM? Can I backup the stock Samsung ROM that I have on it now and restore it if I ever need it?
3) Which CWM file do I download exactly? I have a Telus SGH-I747M, and there are no downloads listed for that carrier. Do I just choose the AT&T version (Samsung Galaxy S3 (AT&T))? Why are there different versions for Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc? What are the differences and what do I choose for a Canadian Telus S3?
4) I am on Bell in Canada...do I have to be careful about which baseband gets flashed? I heard Rogers and AT&T were different from reading the sticky at the top of this forum.
Thanks,
Elliott

I can not really help for games... because I do not use any games on my device.
1) yes
2) Yes for the installation and yes for the backup. Do a backup in CWM before installing everything. If you need to go back, the backup will be useful. But don't worry if you don't have it, stock rom files are still available elsewhere... but it's easier to work with a backup.
3) except for modems and bootloader file, always download for the d2att device (Galaxy SIII for AT&T). Even for the recovery. I'm using TWRP for the recovery... and they have a version for the d2can (what you have)... but this recovery does not work with most d2att roms. Go with d2att dans you will be fine.
4)see my previous message... and if you upgraded to the latest Samsung ROM available (android 4.1.2), you already have the latest baseband and bootloader... but if you want a more recent bootloader and/or modem, check this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898
Again, do not install a modem/bootloader for an AT&T device... it won't work... make sure you take one for the I747M.
with CM, or most custom rom, it does not include a baseband (modem) or bootloader... so you are fine flashing them even if they are made for the d2att. I747 and I747M are using the same hardware and software except for the modem and boodloader
Thanks for the help.
As for rooting, I noticed that using CF-Root, there are two possible download files:
SGH-I747: CF-Auto-Root-d2att-d2uc-samsungsghi747.zip
SGH-I747M: CF-Auto-Root-d2can-d2vl-sghi747m.zip
I'm guessing in this case it is RIGHT to choose the d2can version?
Anyone else have any response to this/regarding my games question?

yes chose the d2can version.
I do not remember exactly what I did to first root my device... it was a long time ago.
I remember that I used mobile odin to flash a new rom...
Thanks. What about this method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoEVDgjTTdg
Is a Telus SGS3 supported by that method?
And one of my friends who has done the same thing installing CM10.1 on his SGS3 told me that I need to modify the build prop after installing to say d2can instead of dtatt, is that still true now? I don't know how long ago he did it.

[Help] Am I okay to update to a new rom?

Hello all,
About a year ago I flashed v28 (4.4.2) of Omega ROM. I don't believe I flashed an sgh-m919 specific version, though I don't quite remember, and through a few searches I couldn't find the same older thread for the ROM. I also don't remember if I flashed anything else, bootloader, modem, kernel etc. I feel like I might have flashed a modem at the time. Possibly a kernel but I don't think I changed anything about my kernel.
My phone is getting slow and unstable and I'd like to update to v41 (latest, 5.0.1) of Omega ROM. The thread is over in the international i9505 development forum. I barely remember how any of this works anymore beyond simply putting the ROM on my sdcard, wiping everything, and flashing through recovery, and so the mention needing to flash XXUHOB8 bootloader and modem in the Omega ROM installation post made me question whether I could simply wipe and update, since the bootloader and modem are for international i9505 and I have the t-mobile phone.
Also, Im going to flash the latest version of TWRP. Initially I would think I would flash jfltetmo, as per the tmobile s4 TWRP on the TWRP website. But if I'm using an i9505 rom, do I need to flash the international version of TWRP (jfltexx)?
Basically, my question is, should I expect any problems if I just flash the i9505 bootloader and modem to my sgh-m919 and then flash the new Omega ROM? Do I need to do something with the bootloader and modem specific to the sgh-m919?
You don't need anything i9505. Just update to 4.4.4 NK2 firmware with odin and flash the latest twrp, followed by the rom

Can't find Bootloader & Modem

Hello,
Trying to install the custom ROM cyanogen mod 11.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2682905
First time I ever attempt to flash a custom rom.
In the guide it asks to DL Bootloader & Modem. My baseband is:
I747MVLUFOB3
I can't find any baseband corresponding to this one.
Here I found a firmware that correspond to my base band.
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I747M/
Not sure if it is useful...
Any way to install the custom room??
Cheers

Which variant of the galaxy s3 do you have? You should be able to flash any ROM compatible with your phone using TWRP or Phil touch recovery.
I have the i747m (rogers canada). I have TWRP 2.8.7.0 & rooted with Kingo root. Somehow it was the only way to root it. Tried Towel root & odin but both were doing nothing.
TWRP was installed a long time ago. I recently made an update on kies (what a mistake sign...). I was on 4.4.2 before and after the firmware update on kies.
I got a spare S3 motherboard (with cpu etc.) I might try on that one first but I need to disassemble & assemble everything... not very tempting.
I usually just use odin and http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ to start fresh and root again when I want to upgrade bootloader and modems.
As you saw at sammobile, OB3 is the latest official release for the i747. You do not need to do anything to your baseband (modem) to run CM11. You may want to verify that your bootloader (firmware) matches the modem. This can be done from within TWRP. Go to the advanced menu and in the terminal enter
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
You should get a return ending in OB3.
I suspect the CM 11 updater-script has not been updated to account for the just released OB3 firmware. If that is the case, you could always edit the script in the roms zip file.
@dawgdoc
When I entered the command, it returned me:
I747MVLUFOB3
Secondly, I have not tried to install CM11 (or the newer version CM12?). I do not know if it works. I just want to make sure I can flash and not brick my phone.
My phone is not the d2att (i747), it is d2can (i747m). I believe these two are very similar but enough different to cause problem.
So, can I install CM11 or 12?
You are talking about changing a zip file... The newb I am know how to do that, but what exactly - that he doesn't know. So I would rather not mess with that. I guess TWRP checks if the firmware of the bootloader / modem matches to those from a compatible list and simply updating that list would allow me to install the build?
I was thinking about this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/development/unofficial-cyanogenmod-12-t2968854
Don't know the exact difference with the CM12 but it says d2can.
However, the BaNkS GAPPS - GAPPS link does not work... I don't know what that is.

The unofficial CM12 -5.1.1 by @matrixzone is good for the i747M, aka d2can. If you have any doubts, ask on that thread if it is updated to run on OB3? Matrixzone is active on the forums and should respond to your question. Also I just checked the updater-script for the latest CM11 official nightly and it is set up to run on the i747M.
So, either should run with no problems for you.
What is the bootloader and modem version needed and how do I get them without getting a locked bootloader? I'm on i747M with 4.1.1 Stock rom with DLK4 modem and bootloader. There are newer bootloaders and modems that can be flashed through recovery but some people have been getting bricks when messing with bootloader.
THey say to use Official firmwares to have it update the bootloaders but which one is the proper firmware version to get the proper bootloader and modem version to allow DATA 4g LTE after flashing CM12.1 Lollipop rom?
