64 million dollar question, should I custom ROM?

Hi
As title says I am toying with the idea of updating my ROM from stock 4.1.1
Although I am happy with its overall performance I would like to know from other people what they felt were the main difference when they changed ROMs
I would love to get rid of all the bloatware and have the new camera app with 4.2
also...read somewhere that 4.2 will be available OTA in the new year but what the hell, people root out of the box so it can't be all that bad

If all you want to do is remove bloatware, all you need to do is root. You can install some of the 4.2 apps without rooting either.

You don't need to use a Custom rom really.
I got my Note 2 since yesterday and I'm really happy with stock performance (and I was coming from a SGS3).
I just powered it with root and XposedFramework with call recording and multiwindow modules.
I don't know only few devs are doing their mods with xposedframework...

If you want to tweak and customise it then go for a custom ROM.
Otherwise, if you just want to remove pre-installed apps then just root it and stay on stock as D3 suggested.

Ok so rooting is a must, would I still get updates OTA if I am rooted? maybe for now I can just uninstall bloatware and install the camera app until 4.2 is released

I went that way with my Note I, and was so addicted to it that I didn't rest until I bricked it, of course it was entirely my fault alone but will never take that root again.
So my 64 million dollar advice is no, I will most patiently wait for the stock ROM.

I dunno about OTA. I rooted and flashed custom within about 2hrs of getting my Note 2
Put it this way though...any updates, fixes or features included in new official firmware will always be included in the latest stock ROMs, often even before the official stock appears as many XDA devs have industry insiders who often leak f/w early.

All soft-bricks are fixable... don't let it put you off enjoying the vast array of awesome custom ROMs available for Note 2. Just be sure to always have a back-up handy, and to always read the instructions as many times as it takes for them to be clear in your mind :good:

You must be flashing the wrong ROMs
I've been doing this a long time too, on lots of different phones and rarely have any bugs or frustrations, certaininly nothing that isn't usually A/ apparent on stock f/w too or B/ fixed within hours/days by the ROM devs. I wouldn't say I'm a flashaholic though, I tend to find a ROM that works well then use it for a few weeks with the odd kernel swap until the next major release, usually a new base, then I'll monitor the threads for a few days to see what issues others are having and see if it's worth my while updating. I guess that's half the fun for me though and I understand some people simplay can't be bothered with it. Each to their own :good:
The good thing about Note 2 is it has good stock and cutom ROMs so you're going to have a good experience either way

I'd echo citizenlees comments. The stock rom is pretty good.
I'm a relative new comer, and I'm in the process of mixing up ROMS And kernels. And I have to say it's been fun trying new things and seeing how they work for you. My battery life now is mega! And that's only from tinkering.
Make sure your back up is solid depending on which recovery version you use.
I've had to use the recovery method when things have gone pear shaped, but all good now.
Have fun and explore in small steps.

you need to have root to enjoy your android phone to full...for ex: to include all apps in multiview, etc..........but when you have rooted the note2, there is no way you get OTA updates...they are also far and few..you need to update by flashing the official new firmware using odin, when it is made available, usually 2-3 months later than the leak....and you would again lose root...so you again have to root......(unlike my asus tablet, where i can restore root without problem and i get OTA updates despite being rooted..and i am using stock rom on it...asus is fast on updates and fixes)
so think about it, ...you may as well flash custom roms (most are close to stock on the note2 ...just debloated, rooted with all tweaks and mods pre-installed) and enjoy all tweaks and updates earlier.
just read instructions carefully, no problems

The stock firmware is wonderful. I myself got my note yesterday and I am planning to just root and debloat it. I would advise the same.

just playing with kernels

Im using it stock (4.1.2 official) + root + cwm (to flash some mods for odex roms...) .. And i enjoy it.. THe only thing i miss are those mods for notification toggles, as i cant get them to work on odexed 4.1.2...
Rest is totally fine...
And for the OTA. you dont need to wait for ota.. Just follow xda and, when next official version comes out (4.2) just flash it via odin

If quality don't matter, 4.2 camera isn't close to Samsung's firmware camera. Just something to consider.

Update....
hence forth with cm10.1 and gapps-jb was a pleasant experience I have to say.
on boot chose not to do a full synch with gmail, sweet that it re-downloads all ur apps but on this occasion thought best not to
camera didnt have sphere!! so i flash it with 4camnex2 so now I have 2 camera icons in my app draw one that has no sphere and one that fails to load!! hmm
also keyboard doesnt have any number across the top, I was sooo used to this previous now its just a bind having to press 123 button
on the whole I am still glad I upgraded to 4.2
am I right that I could re-flash with an official ROM and revert back to OTA updates?
Any advice on tweaks wit this would be most welcome

Not everyone is looking at YOUR question. Have some respect/patience. There are threads guiding how to flash a different firmware version all over the net using Odin, in the hour you waited for a response, you could have easily used Google to find your solution.
Now you may have an issue about Knox, but since you are going from 4.4 to 4.3 (both a knox bootloader) i don't think there will be any issues.
If you have a custom recovery, just flash a 4.3 ROM
If not, use Odin to flash the 4.3 official firmware package.
With the information i provided you, you should easily be able to achieve what you need to do via Google search.

Are you sure the 4.4 to 4.3 thing works? I've been using 4.2 on my S4 (I9500) all along, and recently upgraded to 4.4. I strongly dislike KitKat and would ideally like to go back to 4.2, but if there's no way of doing so, 4.3 would be fine.

I have not tried it myself. It was just speculation since they are both knox bootloaders. The worst that will happen is Odin will say it failed OR your Knox will be tripped (which i see highly unlikely as knox detects changes from what "should" be there)

Just for info you cant go to 4.2.2 from 4.4.2 am trying right now and i get error every single time (5 times), 4.3 could work fine but.... If you have prblems with 4.4.2 like others and me too with screen goes black, lock screen is retarded and many other f****** **** i find stable firmware Blck edition and here is link so good luck man. i9505 Black Edition only one withouth all known problems http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=28511

Thanks for the help. There were some people who said that it's impossible to go back to 4.2.2 from 4.4.2 and some that said you can't even go back to 4.3, but then others that said it is possible. I tried a number of different ROMs and they didn't boot at all. Then I tried Omega ROM v14.1 (Android 4.2.2), and that works brilliantly now.
Here's the thread for it from this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232887. Only seems to be for Samsung Galaxy devices at this point.
It is an unbloated TW ROM (actually allows you to choose which Google and Samsung apps to install during a custom install process that begins when you flash it). It's faster than all my previous versions of Android, and obviously takes up less space.
Annoying that not everything works and that it took such a long time to get a successful installation, but at least I've found a ROM that has what I was looking for.

Yup but that is a custom ROM and with proper recovery you can go down to 4.2.2 but when we speak of Stock Samy Firmware and Odin it is imposible i have tested it. And Omega is great but still Custom hehehehe

Oh yeah, I became aware of that very early on during my search. All the ROMs I've been trying to get working have been custom and Omega is the only one that's actually booted.
I'm just glad I found something that looks like my old TW 4.2.2. Don't really mind whether or not it's custom. It is a shame that you can't go back to older official Samsung firmware once you've updated though. What do you think the reason for that is?

I'm curious which ROM for the Sprint Galaxy Note 4 is currently best for day to day use?
I would love to use a clean CM ROM, but the CM ROMs I've tried seem to have random little bugs, which after weeks of use become very annoying. I haven't tested many TouchWiz ROMs for the Note 4, which is why I'm making this post.
Question 1:Simply, which ROM(s) are most stable currently? I would just test them myself but the last few weeks I've become extremely busy and I just don't have the time to test many different ROMs.
Questions 2: Are you using a custom ROM? If so, which, and how long have you been using it?

You're not providing enough information to answer the question. Custom ROMs based on OB7 or lower are not compatible with OE1 and OF5 builds. Nor can those be downgraded without great consequence. For reference, OB7 is the initial Lollipop build.
What's your build number by last 3 digits? Be careful if on those or taking OTA to those if custom is your primary interest. Xposed it's another similar issue but limited to deodexed ROMs if you're talking about TW Lollipop.
Custom ROMs will come for OF5. Patience.

I also have the same question but do not know what an OTA, OE1, OF5, OB7 are. I am rooted but never flashed a rom before I am on the galaxy note 4 910P 6.0.1 PD1 build. I want a stable rom for everyday use.

OTA is short for Over The Air. It's typically referred to as an update build which is what the others are.
Builds or updates increase numerically. To shorten the update in full, the last three digits are typically accepted here as a quick reference to save time.
For example, so far, the Sprint Note 4 has had 3 official updates including the first which was PC1. Then there was PD1 and just this week, PE1 became available. Typically OTA update is available first, followed by a full tar at some point.
OTA updates, if taken, are taken incrementally one after the other without skipping because they patch the previous update. It's the system update method found in Settings menu that you're most likely familiar with.
The tar updates are full updates and can be flashed (Odin is the application for that) out of sequence, if bootloader allows the flash. The bootloader may block install if reactivation lock (aka factory reset protection) is set or tripped or if a lesser security bootloader of a lower build is attempted. For example, you cannot go back to Android 5.0 or 4.4 using Odin to flash the tar; the bootloader would prevent downgrade to lower security bootloader. Rooted users may flash full tars to update or revert to stock to take the next OTA update but modified partitions can and most often will prohibit OTA update. There's also a baseband and bootloader thread in development for those that know what to do with them to assist in compatibility of current build in TWRP backup.
As for custom stock ROMs, I can say they're in development but one mostly stock PD1 ROM exists. Developer tools have slowed the advance of touchwiz stock developed Marshmallow ROMs so it's hard to predict their availability.
Since we just got an update, it may be longer now than thought possible for a custom ROM on PE1 update. CM ROMs are available but they may lack S-Pen and touchwiz features found in stock. You can find released ROMs in the development forum. If interested, follow the OP (original post or post # 1) for install directions and known issues. Search the thread for resolution and known issues before asking questions. Development forums have different rules and practices; you should stay on topic of development, failure resolution and help and search before asking the same question and avoid quoting long OP posts to ask a question. You may read the sticky threads in forums for more information.

New owner seeking advice

Hello everyone:
I am a new (used) Galaxy Note 3 owner. I bought an LG G2 3 weeks or so ago, spent that 3 weeks studying, rooting, installing recovery and finally installing and tweaking Cloudy G2 ROM. Just as I got my G2 running flawlessly it slipped from my shirt pocket as I was grilling, bounced off the grill and landed face down on the car port thus smashing the screen to pieces. :crying: What a waste of time installing that cheap screen protector the previous evening.
Anyway, I found a great deal on a used Note 3 so I went ahead and bought that rather than another G2. So now, I need to update my Note 3 just like I did the G2. Since I am running short on time at the moment I just want to get some ideas on where to start. I do intend to read everything I can on XDA but some helpful tips would really assist me with getting this finished sooner rather than later.
So....Right now the phone has stock 4.4.2 loaded and the knox counter is not tripped.
Baseband version is:N900TUVUCNB4
Security Software Version is:MDF v1.0 Release 2.
I am not at all familiar with this security stuff so any tips here on what exactly this is would be most appreciated.
My goal is:
1. root the device
2. install recovery prefer twrp but cwm will do if necessary
3. install a good ROM (Preferably Lollipop based ROM)
4. I would like to have xPosed Framework support too if possible. Of course this depends on the ROM I presume.
I have heard that Samsung Note 3 is a real bear to root. Also that the Odin software can be dangerous. I have no idea if this is true or not so please help me here.
I was also wondering whether it would be best to root the phone while on KitKat, or upgrade to stock lollipop first and then start the root/recovery process.
I'd really really appreciate all the help I can get from anyone that has owned a note 3 and has already been all through this process.

Oh well, no replies? Man this Samsung device is rather overwhelming what with all the various scenarios. I am thinking of going with temasek's Unofficial CM12.1, or DOMPOP, or maybe Darklord. But I am still completely unsure whether to upgrade to stock Lollipop before I start on the root/recovery/ROM project. I also need to read everything I can find on these 3 roms.
But please, if you have any comments on which of these 3 ROMS is the best for the note 3 and/or comments on the best root/recovery method then by all means point me in the right direction.

I have decided to stay with KitKat for now because of the fact you can't use the xPosed framework on Lollipop and the fact KitKat is just a more stable platform and has many more Roms available. I used this page:

to get my Note 3 on the newest stock KitKat rom, then root it, then install the latest TWRP recovery. I carefully followed the exact steps in this guide except that I did use a newer TWRP recovery I downloaded from: https://dl.twrp.me/hltetmo/twrp-2.8.7.0-hltetmo-4.4.img.tar
Other than using this newer TWRP I went step by step through this guide. I still plan on installing a custom KitKat rom but right now I am researching various roms to try and decide which one. But at least I have latest stock, root, and a good recovery right now.

I'd start with Tweaked. A flawless TW KK ROM. Only if unsatisfied would I bother with LP. Apparently the developer is working on an LP variant, but we'll see. He releases long after others, due to commitments, but well worth the wait. There is an xposed for LP available, but carefully research what modules work with it and compare to what you want.

Thanks a lot. You caught me just before I was about to install Hyperdrive N3 RLS7.1. I'd like to ask you what you think of this ROM?
And as for tweaked, I have come across two possible versions of a "tweaked" ROM. Tweaked ROM [Material L Theme] and TweakedN3 v3.x. Are these actually the same ROM? I'm looking around but still am not sure on this.

Well I "think" I have it figured out and I am in fact going to go with the Tweaked ROM, basic install procedure. Thanks so much for your advice ytj87 - I would have installed that other ROM if I had not seen your post. I may do that down the road anyway but I intend to give Tweaked a thorough test before I do. It looks great and based on forum info it seems less buggy than most of the other roms I researched.

Will probably come down to the experience you want. Tweaked is more stock with an emphasis on stability. I haven't used Hyperdrive, but when you see a ROM like that which integrates something other than the Note 3 TW UI, you're more likely to see glitches. It's the same NF9 base, though, and it has been around a while, and it looks interesting, so at some point give it a shot if curious. I personally prefer the Note 3 original UI to the S5's, so I probably won't try it.
TweakedN3 3.95. The LP themed one I haven't used.

NOOB to Note 4, on OF5 with starter questions

Hello everyone, just picked up a note 4 and was wondering if i could get guided into the right direction.
Am hoping to install a custom rom, seeing as how my about me says that I am on OF5 I can root and install TWRP through ODIn via the instructions posted on galaxynote4root.com ?
If I want to use features such as S Note, sign pdfs, and have the thimbprint reader I assume I need to run a touchwiz custom rom? It was like that for the Note 2. Any guidance towards slimmed out roms? On my old S3 I was on darkslim and would love to find something of a fast and stable rom that can be themed entirely black while using the extra features of the note that are actually useful.
If I want to use viper audio does that lock me into aosp or touchwiz specifically?
From the little I have browsed so far, the NOTERIZED rom looks to be the one?
Other things that slightly stood out would be Hybrid-x, obar,SOKP?
What is the deal with 5.1.1? Something about a locked bootloader that forces use to run a custom kernel?Do I not have to worry about that because of OF5? Am I slightly screwed because I'm not on OB7? There's issues such as no wifi calling? Would this affect sprint spark? I'm in an area where this is available. ..
Any other suggestions? Are my desires too contradictory? Btw is there anything that allows me to have my wallpapers change everyday? I'm currently using AllianceRom for my note 2 and there is a feature in which the colors of my theme change everyday...

You wouldn't have issues with Wi-Fi calling or V4A on either of those ROMs that I'm aware of. You didn't mention freeza's Note 4our ROM but I'd recommend that one too.
Regarding OF5, no real advantage to keep that or its bootloader due to similar issues- no Odin downgrade capability. Depending on how you look at it; slightly disadvantaged, no downgrade through Odin/user lockable reactivation lock that will give you fits if you enable it and try to flash over it.
TW will yield the most capabilities for Note devices. You'll need to upgrade to OG5 through Odin, Odin TWRP and flash the custom ROM of your choice. All OG5 custom should include a kernel exploited for root capability as well as SuperSU in the ROM flash.
Disclaimer: I only answered what I knew. Perhaps others have answers to what I neglected.
