I purchased my Excaliber/Dash SmartPhone thinking the only major difference from PPC was touchscreen support and Office applications but now I'm having difficulty finding information on how to access network resources from a SmartPhone. My next phone will be a Windows Mobile Professional device.
The environment is a Windows 2003 Small Business Server Professional network. I can access the web server but cannot figure out how to browse the network or join the domain. I had to disable certificate checking in the Dash registry to connect via WIFI through the Radius Server. ActiveSync 4.5 works just fine with Exchange and Outlook.
I'm thinking maybe some third party software might help but I have no idea where to begin. Can someone point me in the right direction?
No RDP or network share support in non-touchscreen (standard) mobiles. Closest you can get is some kind of FTP app.
Why would you want to join your phone to a domain? I mean I know the option is there in professional devices, but what does it actually do for you?
Thanks for the information. Microsoft Active Sync allows you to browse the device from a computer (limited) so it doesn't appear that it would be that difficult to have the device at least browse the computer and possibly browse the network.
I dislike devices that have limited functionality built into them. For example. My Samsung T409 has WIFI and Bluetooth and GPRS/EDGE but the WIFI can only be used for T-Mobile [email protected] and Bluetooth can only connect to headsets. I understand that there are many reasons for this from economical to technical.
Similarly, restricting networking capabilities in mobile devices just doesn't make much sense to me but I suppose the typical Smartphone user would not care. I mean that's supposed to be the nature of mobile devices - seamless connectivity. When my T409 switches from a WIFI hotspot to a cell tower it's seamless. I don't even know that has occured until I look at the display.
And as for joining domains, that is like so many other things techheads do like overclocking, running multiple monitors, using KVMs and multiple computers, running Exchange and Internet Security and Acceleration Server and Windows Server Update Services and other stuff. Most people wont need to do this but it's a must for a Techy. Using domains for security and group policy is just a great way to manage computers and devices. And also the option is in my version of the WM6.1 cooked ROM.
In my never ending quest I found a decent application called MyMobiler which will allow you to view your Smartphone on a PC and to some extent control it. http://www.smartphone-freeware.com/download-my-mobiler-v1-0.html
Anyone have any experience with a working VPN client freeware or not on the TP2?

Google is your friend..
http://www.google.com/search?client...reeware+windows+mobile+vpn&btnG=Google+Search
Google is indeed one's friend, and I expect the OP has done many searches exactly like the one above, as I have.
However if you go beyond looking at the google headlines you soon discover that none of these solutions is in fact freeware, as he had requested.
So far I've spent many many hours trying to find a decent winmo IPSec client, free or reasonably priced, and my conclusion so far is that there isn't one. None I can find are free, and the ones that don't cost ridiculous money all have serious functional issues and/or stupid design decisions like requiring you to run their PC version to be able to create security profiles for the mobile one.
Dennis
Actually I see the OP in fact asked for free or otherwise, but they also asked if people had experience with such things, not just were they around.
What about
http://www.zeroshell.net/eng/openvpn-client/#OpenVPN-Windows-Mobile
OpenVPN is extremely nice, but it only works against OpenVPN servers. If you're trying to do IPsec VPN, OpenVPN won't help.
I have done a google search but the results are so generic. I figured people using some of the best WinMo phones would have tried some of these.
I tried searching XDA but did not really come up with anything.
Open VPN probably will not work for me unfortunately.
I need something compatible with cisco.
There are numerous kinds of ipsec, you'd need to tell us which ones your cisco device supports. I've used the openvpn client on the tp2 to some success.
This page has always had the most info in ipsec, I recommend checking some of the various guides on it.
http://www.jacco2.dds.nl/networking/openswan-l2tp.html#No_MSCHAP
Here's a quote from it:
Windows Mobile and Pocket PC 2003 ship with a built-in L2TP/IPsec client. Requires MS-CHAP support in pppd.

I think it's relatively easy to connect to Windows based VPN servers running MS software but I'm not so sure how well it fares with Cisco kit. I'd be surprised if the cisco box didn't support the l2tp protocol, I think it's very common. I believe the incompatibilities come about from the authentication part, which is what the MS-CHAP support mentioned above refers to. Further down the linked page it mentions Cisco kit.
I use the Bluefire Security Technologies Mobile Security VPN 2.7.5.706 .
However it seems Bluefire is out of business...
But it works perfectly for establishing VPN connections to Cisco routers and PIX/ASA's, even with token authentication.
Previously I used the Bluefire client for a few years and it was the only reliable one for Cisco concentrators, but as you said they have gone out of business now.
Also recently I've found I can't get the Bluefire client to work with some of the newer roms I've flashed (NRG etc.), perhaps changes in the newer winmo network stack or something.
I have tried the others and they are expensive and to be honest too much hassle to set up and have lousy error reporting to work out what you did wrong, I've wasted days, literally.
If you have the newer Cisco VPN kit they have dropped IPSec and gone for SSL VPN instead and do their own client for Windows Mobile which is OK.
rdleeuw what rom are you using, stock?
G
I'm using the stock ROM 1.19.401.0 (51489) WWE with Radi0 3.44.25.27 .
I have the latest Froyo6 build on my Froyo TP2 Rhod_100 UK
I have been trying to set up the VPN, but I can not get it working. Does anyone know why and how I can sort this out please?
PS. I also tried to run a VoIP (SIP) client (3CX) on the machine, but that too does not work.
My airtime provider is Vodafone UK and they have assured me that both are enabled on my account at a princely sum of £15 per month! Needless to say at that cost I am dead keen to make this work.

Can you get either to work on wifi?
I know there were some Chinese users trying to get the VPN to work, and couldn't.
I haven't tried, as I have no use for a VPN on my phone lol.
Also, I have known people to get SIP working, but it wasn't so great from what I heard...
Sorry I was not getting alerts and the thread was not showing up in my subs....
If I use WiFi then I am at home and do not need the VPN, but the SIP Phone DOES work and very well.
If I use the WM as a gateway for my laptop, then the laptop can run a VPN and SIP Phone via the phone. If that makes sense to you. Thus the Router running the VPN is working and the config works, and the mobile operator has set up the service. So this is just the phone settings - I believe.

If I had a VPN I could connect to I would test it out...
Maybe its a misconfiguration in Android? broken driver or config?
I do not know. It tells me nothing. The settings are as per the router config. How do I find out what is incorrect/broken etc...?
Can you give as many details as possible on the type of VPN I'm trying to connect to?
It's probably not working because none of the devs use that function - and can't debug it without trying to reproduce your setup.
I might play with it a little as it would potentially let me remotely schedule MythTV recordings safely, but it would be pretty low-pri for me.
I am using at this stage a simple PPTP setup for now. The Android settings are minimal - username and PW, and that is it.
But my laptop, which works has more settings o configure. I.e. MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2
Point to point MPPE
Security 128b and/or 40b
Allow BSD
Allow Deflate data comp
Allow TCP header comp
Does this help
OK, sometime in the next week or two I'll try to get PPTP up and running using similar parameters. I've been meaning to do it in general (not phone-related) for other reasons anyway - but it's been a low priority for a long time.

Why not OpenVPN? Seems like it would be easier/more standards-compliant that a craptacular PPTP VPN .

I'll look into what VPN options Android supports - although for the OP, he may have specific reasons forcing PPTP.

Because I am working with Draytek, my router. Vendor to set up the VPN and this was the. First config as it was the simplest. Seems everything else works, just. Not the. Phone. The phone too has PPTP as a standard setting.
Eh, I prefer to avoid PPTP like the plague if I have any choice. Most companies don't provide a choice, so I figured that's why you were locked in.
If you do have a choice, I would try something different. That's just me tho, I'd prefer open to closed any day if I had the choice .
Just a side note - the built-in Android VPN support uses pppd. The ril currently uses "killall pppd" to disable mobile data. If you're using both at once, then this will kill the VPN too. This is a stupid flaw in the current ril code, which is fixed in the "initpppd" branch of my ril repo. (But the initpppd branch depends on a number of rootfs fixes before it is usable, and stinebd has not merged any of it yet.)

Thanks for the reminder of that, I remember the discussions on the dev list.
I'm going to shelve poking at the VPN stuff until the RIL overhaul stabilizes and gets mainlined in this case.

OK, please excuse slowness of response. As arrghh knows from another thread I am in transit across Europe. I reached my destination, Italy and have spent the past few days getting internet access *broadband virtually does not exist here unless you are in a City, so I have to use a very slow mobile broadband).
I am not a techie, but I am a willing player with some knowledge - dangerous, I know. I have been assisted by the manufacturer of my Router, a Draytek 2820 to set up a VPN. We may make it a more sophisticated VPN later, but pptp is the easiest. I have it working on all laptops and PCs, including this old banger here in Italy. What I can NOT do, is get it working on the phone. I think it is communicating with the router, but it is not getting through.
PS the PCs and Laptops are all Linux - Ubuntu 10.10
Hope this helps
I'm one of those Chinese who tried using VPNs on my Raphael, but failed of course. Actually, neither on WM, nor on Android, neither via pptp, nor via l2tp over ipsec. What I wanna remind is VPN on most Android roms on hd2 works fine, but some roms also cannot support vpn.
If you have enough time, I don't know how to pray for, would you please explore l2tp over ipsec? Because in many cities in China, pptp is also blocked by ISP. And I can provide a test account if anyone needs it.
Btw, I believe vpn is necessary when connecting a public wifi
Sent from my MSM using XDA Premium App
One more report, vpn in pptp could not work..
At this point - I'm going to hold off on poking at this until highlandsun's new RIL settles out and is officially committed. Some of the dev traffic correspondence indicates that the way we currently handle PPP is incompatible with VPNs. His new ril + rootfs combo that changes the pppd control architecture MIGHT solve some of the PPTP issues, I haven't tried them yet.
See it.
May your works come out soon~
I know how to do this in Windows and Linux, but not really sure how to go about it on Android...4.0.4 to be exact.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to have both active, with the 3G/4G handling internet-based activities and the Wifi handling local network access.
Why? Basically my home internet is horrible however I have some services/shares on my LAN that I want to access on my phone. And I can't switch between them, not an option. Because many times I'm wanting to take a picture from my file server (Accessed over Wifi) and then upload it to Flickr (Accessed over 3G/4G).
In Windows it's setting the gateway metric, and I would set the connection with the internet with the lower metric while the LAN-only connection gets a higher one.
I'm not aware of any way to do this on any Android - I would imagine it requires a heavily modded ROM.
You could of course tether a Windows or Linux computer on your network to the Android and implement gateway metrics from that end, in order to copy photos from the LAN server to the Internet via cellular.

Ask Cyanogen, if he could do such a thing, afterall, he has been hacking/modding Android since it's inital release. If anyone can help you, it's him... Sorry dude.
While I've never tried it, you might want to try setting up a DHCP reservation on your LAN that DOES NOT provide a gateway. This should allow Internet access using your egress connection while still allowing local LAN access-at least this is how it works for most computers that are multihomed.
Hi,
i'm gonna be on holidays and for some services i need a German IP address. I have a Surface RT. Do you have any ideas how to get that??
I'm happy with every solution that is free and stable and allows streaming. I have an VPN access from my university, but i need cisco anyconnect. So if there is a hack how to run anyconnect on the surface, it should be the easiest way.
