So I have noticed that my note 3 has been reporting high data usage than I normally do. my verizon nexus did an avg of 5gb while this thing has been known to register 10-20gb a month. With the same usage between the two phones and phone companies. (using data usage in settings)
T-mobile registered me using 12.6973 GB / Unlimited Non-Shared for one month. My phone says I used 13.67gb for the same time period. However, I actually added up all the data used by each app individually and got 4.08gb of usage. (and I counted 60 apps using less than 1mb as 1mb each)
I can't possibly be using 8+gb of data that the phone aint counting am I? Do you have similar results?
Here is my math proof
2 apps using more than a gb of data = 2.3gb data
all apps measured in mb = 1771.21 mb. Converted to gb = 1.729697266 gb data
60 apps using less than 1mb counted as 60mb data converted to gb = 0.0585938 gb data
added up == 4.088291066 gb data used
Can't help you with your missing data, but I just did rough estimate on mine and it adds up pretty well to the totals showed, but I'm nowhere near your totals. The discrepancy between bill and phone could be data used over wifi or slightly different cutoff time (phone could be running totals until midnight your local time and T-mo could be using pacific time).
If I had to make totally wild guess, I remember once somebody posted something about some program going wild on his phone and using gigabytes of data in a matter of days, don't remember the outcome, if it was virus or just crashed program in a loop accessing internet at random, but maybe you should start with some full reset or something. Also maybe look for a better program monitoring your data access and usage. I would be concerned and tried to figure it out, if it was my phone, especially that I have 2GB high speed limit, LOL. Is your phone set up as mobile hot spot? Could somebody else use data from your phone? Did you run virus check?

this has been going on since I got the phone brand new. I have unlimited so i wasn't too worried, but after months of repetition, i'm trying to get to the bottom of it. virus scan is good with two programs.

Went from a TP2 to the Evo 4g and saw a huge jump in data usage like going from 500mb to 1.4gb. When I went from the Evo to the SII my data went from 1.5gb to 2.1gb. No big changes in how the phone is used, no more email, no different apps. Also wondering if this large increase in data is contributing to the battery drain issues. Has anyone else noticed an increase in data usage with the SII?
Mine always goes up with a new phone cause I use it more. But that's the only reason. Yes it could be this device cause your sending larger picture files and such
mine has increased a lot as well but probably because its new and im using it constantly.
Is anyone else experiencing a higher data usage than they previously had?
On my Desire HD I was on Unlimited data and I used about 450mb a month. I had pretty much all syncing enabled.
On my gnex I only have Google syncing and I appear to have used 120mb already in 4 days...
I might have to cancel my contract and buy outright on giffgaff..

Have you not checked what's using the data, using the new data monitor in ICS? I had Google Books download 40mb without knowing!

Dont know if its just me but the data usage app is buggy. Still says 211kb for browser after 4 days so i wouldnt trust it.
Ymmm market backup? New phone everything is restoring?

Of course you get much higher usage the first weeks with a new phone. Just as you get "worse" battery time.
This is because all sane XDA enthusiasts uses a new phone much more than the old one the first weeks or so...

That is true, Hmm I ll have mine in a couple of days Ill look at this but for me I have unlimited data plan so doesn't matter really
The data usage app is a bit buggy, as is the battery one.
I set my phone up on Wifi etc. In the data usage for the my Wifi it shows as 900mb..
So effectively i've used almost 1GB in total over 4-5 days. I've only used the phone on data the same as I would use any other phone so I cannot understand why its so high.
It all seems to be random background stuff that isn't open in multitasking :s Think I might return it and buy outright with GiffGaff...
so i got the nexus couple days ago and i have been previously on at&t with galaxy s2 of course the internet was slower there so it was kind of harder to reach that 2gb limit.
Now i wanted to ask do you guys know any good software that will show me exactly how much each program is eating the bandwidth?
i know the built in ics meter usage but i dont really trust it.
So far i checked that the go weather widget was using 0.01 kb of data each few minutes so i turned off the auto update ( i did 300 megs somehow in 2days)
i know speedtests really take a lot so i dont do them anymore
i also listened to sirius xm for like 20 minutes but even on at&t it wouldnt eat as much data.
Thanks guys
Why don't you trust the built in data usage app? It's not perfect, but even if its within 50mb of the actual, that's an acceptable measure.

It's not within 50MB lol. Last month I went through around 3GB and it said I used like 2.7GB. A difference of 10% is pretty big when you have a data limit...it could mean spending an extra $30 that month.
OP, check out 3G Watch Dog. Best data-monitoring solution on the market. Set how much data you get per month and when your billing period starts (just like the ICS built-in one) and it'll keep you updated with what you're doing. It's not perfect for monitoring specific apps either, but the overall total is usually exact (since it monitors at the last possible point before exiting/entering the phone).
I find Network Counter to be pretty effective...
So i was thinking on how i want this phone to be delivered, since i have to wait until monday... but then i was imagining those fast speeds that i was gona have, and the it hit me... faster means quicker.... so is it true that the probabilities of your data to reach your data allowance is quicker?? i need to know because i only bought 4gb of internet... and i use my phone's internet a lot
thanks
You use the same amount of data whether on LTE or 3G. It all depends on your usage. If you decide to use more because its faster, then yeah...you will hit your cap faster.
If you drive a mile at 20mph, vs 120mph, it is still a mile. You went the same distance, just arrived at it quicker.
so it's not going to affect it at all?
It depends on your usage. People typically use more data when things are faster because it is more enjoyable, or it allows them to do things they could not before, such as HD video streaming.
In a controlled environment where habits do not change whatsoever, you use the same amount of data no matter your speed.
It will only affect the speed at which you consume the data. If you're requesting 1.5Mb on Facebook over 3G, or 1.5Mb on Facebook over 4G LTE, it's still 1.5Mb. What you may experience, though, is that since you view information so much quicker, your usage of 4G LTE may go up. Just remember to have WiFi on whenever you're in an accessible WiFi hotspot, and if you start using more data (viewing more sites, watching more YouTube videos, etc) because it's delivered faster, just keep tabs on it. If you're on Verizon, they have a data widget you can download from the market. If not, you can keep close-enough tabs on it by seeing your data usage in settings.

It'll probably effect you subconsciously as you'll more than likely be like "wow this is fast, I'll do more stuff!"
but if you do the exact same things, the faster speed doesn't use more data by default.
I'm still at the same usage as on 3G. As mentioned, if you stream video that's one of the few things where the same use can pull more data because you may be pulling better quality video. If you're really concerned, ICS has a lot of alerts to warn you when you're getting close to your cap, install the VZW data usage widget, and use WiFi at home and (if possible) work.
I spent more time doing speed tests once I started using LTE. It accounted for a lot of my bandwidth for the first week or so.

so no speed tests.... even though it was one of the things i wanted to do... i wanted to see how fast it was.... how much did it take? and how many tryouts did you do?
Sometime starting early on 2/27 until 4AM today (2/28) my Firecube 2nd Gen consumed 400GB of data. I have been using Gargoyle on my router to track data usage by device. By the time I knew there was a problem I was only able to look on the router in hourly buckets to 11AM on 2/27. The consumption varied from 20 to 26 GB per hour from 11AM 2/27 until 3AM 2/28 where it dropped to 17GB and then at 4AM when it dropped to virtually nothing.
I use the Firecube rarely, mostly as a backup to my Firestick. I have data monitoring setup, but I had the threshold set too high. I have the monitoring set up to reset on the 4th of each month to match my Cox cable service.
Looking at the top 11 apps I have installed the total is only 141 GB with remaining apps below 2 GB and dropping fast. And that is for the period starting February 4th. So, there is nothing in these logs to account for the data consumed yesterday and this AM.
It is a good thing that I look at my Cox data stats every day or I might have missed this. Another good thing is that I only have a 500MB connection. If I had Gigablast I might have used twice as much. As it stands, I only have about 40 GB of data left for the next 4 days.
Another interesting detail is my Installed Applications now show internal space of only 1.56 GB free out of the 12.86 available. The last time I checked I had about 8 GB free.
I have unplugged the cube and will do a factory refresh once I get some feedback on this thread.
Thanks!
