[Q] Ext4 Memory Card 64 GB cannot be formatted - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear Brainaics
I've got an issue,
My sd card is 64 gb sandisk class 10
I was using Pro Bam android 4.4.1 on my n7100
So I formatted my memory card within the rom.. It was fat 32 or ntfs
Later I got some issues with the rom, So I installed the stock rooted rom.
Ever since that I've been getting an unsupported file system.
Format Card - It shows formatting - then unsupported file system error - This goes on and on.
So i tried mounting it in Linux Ubuntu & try to format using gparted & terminal.
My data is there.. The card reads & all.
But I can't format it.
These are all the steps i've taken, I even tried sd formatter I got somewhere from xda!
Any useful info would be greatly appreciated by me offcourse mentally.
I mean i crave for knowing the reason behind this anomaly!
Have a good day...
Cheers

Can you delete any files on the card? I had a 64gb SanDisk card that had all my data but I couldn't format it, copy files or delete files from it, either on my phone or laptop.
SanDisk replaced it for me as it had developed a fault.

[Q] Change new memory card

i want to ask if i change a new memory card , after i format it to fat32 wat should i do next ? my friend done this but the phone still cant detect the sd card .. any solution ?
The phone should detect it after it has been formatted. If it's not detecting it, then something has gone wrong with the card or the phone. I suspect a dodgy card.
Really, all you have to do is this:
Backup your old card
Format your new card
copy the backup onto new card
That's all it should be, unless you're using A2SD or soemthing.
If you have multiple partitions, if you are using A2SD, then you might need something epic like Clonezilla to literally mirror the structure of the old SD card onto the new card. If after a format of FAT32 and the card isn't detected at all, then as the previous post said, the card is probably dud.
i going to buy class 10 8 gb memory card .. does it make the phone load the file faster ? or i juz get class 4 16g better

A2SD transfer the easy way for users
1 - create a nandroid backup of everything (this includes the A2SD ext partition)
2 - backup EVERYTHING from the mem card to your pc!
3 - insert new mem card
4 - run rom manager (download it from the market if you have to!)
5 - partition the new card with rom manager (creating an ext partition as well)
6 - Copy everything from the pc BACK to the NEW card!!!!
7 - Restore the nandroid backup!!!!!!!!!
You now have the phone back to the exact state you started with but with a different memory card installed!
buffer size 8kb
Data size 10mb
Write : 5.27mb
read 12.72
this is kingmax class 10 8gb memory card ..izit good ?

SD card damaged after install pacman rom

Ive installed pacman rom on my note 2 but the sd status appeared as damaged and required a format .
I didn't format and went to recovery and restored the stock rooted rom 4.1.2 that I have backed up and it backed up successfully.
But the sd card appeard as damaged also in the stick rom .
I have backed up the backup files that were in the card , I can add photos and videos later .
Is there a way to fix the card without formating it?

Try a card reader.

I believe your sd card is 64gb and formatted in exFAT.
Pacman ROM is based on AOSP/CM (CMIIMW) therefore exFAT is not supported. Try to reformat you sdcard in FAT32 format (you will loss capability to store >4gb file in your sdcard) but it works.
same problem
I had just the same situation with Paranoid Android and 64Gb exFAT formatted card several days ago. I knew that PA (like any AOSP ROM) can't see exFAT filesystem. But I only wanted to test PA for a few days so I decided not to format card or remove it from the phone. I did nothing with the card in the PA ROM. Nevertheless I found my card damaged after returning to stock 4.1.2 ROM (just like ahmedss79 did). Neither Android nor windows could read my card.
But AROMA Filemanager saw the card and could read and write it. I used PhilZ Touch CWM with Aroma Filemanager and copied all important files from sd card to internal storage.
And when I opened my "damaged" sd card in partition manager (in Windows, using a card reader) I noticed that it has two partitions: small 12Mb FAT before big 59 Gb unknown partition. I guess this FAT partition was automatically created by PA after its fist boot and exactly this FAT partition made the card damaged as it wiped all file tables, located in the first couple of Mb of the original exFAT partition.
Is there any way to format to FAT32 using any application on an Android device?
I'm running PACMan at the moment, which seems to have the most features.
I have no hardware that can read my SD card on a PC at the moment.
I'm currently at work and don't feel like waiting 8 hours to do it at home, plus, there some compatibility issues formatting FAT32 on Windows 8

[Q] Formatting Fat32 64gb microSDHC card to exFAT Inquiry

I have a SanDisk 64gb card which is formatted Fat32.
I've been running it without issue for a few months.
45gb is being used.
I wanted to transfer the files to my pc, and have a few questions/comments:
- after transferring my files I want to format to exFAT
- will my files that were on my Fat32 card be able to be transferred to my exFAT card, as there are a couple of Nandroid, ROM downloads, pics, etc. that I want to transfer back.
- after transferring files to my pc, I was going to place the card back into my S4 and format card from the device. From what I've read, the device will format the card to exFAT. Would this be correct?
There are a couple of reasons I'd like to format the card:
- I want to transfer files to pc, and have some more space on the card, and figured I'd format to exFAT so as not to have file size limitations, although I've yet to dl any 4gb files.
- I'm taking a preemptive strike to avoid possible card issues which may arise in the future. I thought transferring many of the 45gb of files on the card, and re-formatting the card may assist with this, or is this not necessarily true?
If formatting the card and emptying files doesn't reduce the possibility of borking the card in the future, I want to transfer files anyway, in addition to having the card in exFAT unless there is a downside to this format.
Tia......
I recommend keeping it at Fat32. The phone won't read ExFat.

Shouldn't be a problems with what you're wanting to do.
-Copy sd card contents to PC
-Reformat and copy content back
-Make sure the recovery you're using can read exFAT (both TWRP and Philz CWM can read exFAT)
-Also be sure the kernel support exFAT or your phone might not boot up.
-There's pros and cons to each format but for regular user like myself it's not something I really worry about

The phone out of the box should read exFAT. It's when using different kernels that does not support exFAT it will not read.

Last night, I:
- copied 45gb data from card to pc - 50 minutes
- I've read about the kernels and the format to be used
- decided to keep card @ Fat32 : "If it Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It" applies here
- I haven't deleted files yet, or formatted
I formatted the card once before using my pc and www.easeus.com
I found this also:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735&page=2
But most likely will use the easeus method, which is also in that thread.
I'll take another look, but does formatting the card using the S4 format to exFAT or Fat32?
I thought it was exFAT, buy info or mis info is all over the place.
I've not used the on phone format feature yet.
To go from exFat to FAT32 I use Minitool partition
http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html
To go from FAT32 to exFat I just used the Windows PC formatting feature.

I'm on Fat32 already.
Is re-formatting an exercise in futility?
I was thinking to re-format because:
- after months of making Nandroids without issue, I had trouble recently Booting after backing up to extSdCard. I'd freeze on Samsung splash after multiple backup attempts.
I backed up to internal and booted fine. I dont know if this was coincidence, but figured I'd format for good measure. Otherwise, the extSdCard is running without issue.
Not sure there even is an issue.
I actually had a successful Nandroid to extSdCard card afterwards.
Just thinking out loud.
I'll probably just empty the card of some gb, and not format.

Formatting is a breeze. I've gone from exFAT to FAT32 and vice versa without a problems. Both was achieved in minutes, only time consuming is copying contents to and from sd card.
I was also having troubles with TWRP not booting past Samsung splash screen and I was on exFAT at the time.
Like you have mentioned I only got that problems since flashing with Aroma and never before that.
I've since switch over to Philz CWM and everything is OK (except nandroid backup take ages:laugh

I'm sorry but this is an incorrect statement. Samsung has supported exFat on 64GB cards only on both the Galaxy S3 and S4. Their initial implementation was buggy but they did work the kinks out.
Here are the disadvantages to using FAT32 on 64GB cards:
Fat32 only supports files up to 4GB - 1 (technically 4,294,967,295 bytes) in length. A high definition video today takes up to 4GB per hour of video (even more sometimes). This limits the size of movies you can store.
The maximum size of a directory (actual number of bytes of the directory itself, not number of files) is limited to 65,5355 bytes. Considering that each directory entry takes up 32 bytes that limits the number of files in a single directory to 2047 entries if long file names are not used. With files names longer than 8 characters that number gets reduced significantly. That is a problem for apps like Titanium backup that use lots of files or if you have a lot of MP3s.
I have been using exFat on my 64GTB SDXC memory cards on both my S3 and my s4 without any problems after Samsung fixed the initial bugs.
You should not encounter any problems copying files from your FAT32 card to your PC and then copying them back to an exFat card. I have done that several times.
@ChitownWingMan
Some good info there re capacities and such.
Earlier I decided to keep the format at Fat32, and didn't re format
If it ain't broke, don't fix it, as they say.
I also understand that exFat is Kernel sensitive, so I'd be limited to wha I can flash
Owe ya a Thanks. My daily 8 limit ran out

Your welcome. I was one of the first people to report the exFat bug in the original release of the S3 and I worked with Sandisk and Samsung to identify it as a bug.
I actually tried to run NTFS for a while but I couldn't find a decent implementation for Android and EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 have little or no support on Windows.

Ahh, this again. Since Ubuntu doesn't read exFat, you'll understand my reluctance to reformat.

I just googled "ubuntu exfat" and came up with more than a dozen websites with instructions on how to install and use exfat on Ubuntu.
Good luck...
I have done exactly what the OP mentioned - with 32 GB SD card. I copied all files to my computer, formatted the SD card from its original FAT-32 to exFAT, using an SD-card adapter. With quick format that only takes 2 seconds. Then copied all files back to the card, stuck it in my Galaxy S4 (Build VRUEMJ7, if that's important). And it works fine - all the files are readable on the phone - music, video, .doc, .xls, .ppt. , mp3 , No problems.
TWRP recovery has support for ExFAT since v2.4.0.0.

[Q] P601 64GB sdcard unwritable

Hi folks,
I recently got a 64 GB microsd card ( class 4) for my galaxy note 10.1 SM-P601 ( build:JSS15J.P601XXUBMJ9,Baseband601DDUBMJ1).
This card works fine when I use it on my laptop but I am unable to write it on the tablet.I am able to read the data though.
Below is the list of what I have already tried and failed.
1)I have tried rebooting,remounting reinserting
2) As the default format was exFAT I reformatted it into fat32 using fat32 formatter.
3) I tried partitioning the card on laptop into 2 32gb partitions and then using it on the tablet.
4) I have tried SD card accelerators from Play store.
Once I mount the sdcard it shows TOTAL SPACE: 62.5 GB in Settings->General->Storage.When ever I try to write the card it somewhat gets unmounted and shows TOTAL SPACE :0.0 bytes.
Please suggest a solution to make it work

Have you formated it in the GN 2014?
Also, I wouldn't use a Class 4.. Just my opinion.
Also, they have some bad 64gb cards out there.. I would get a name brand 64gb class 10 from BestBuy, Staples, etc.. Format it GN 2014. If everything works, then the problem was the sd card.
I have a Sandisk Ultra 64gb Class 10 in my GN 2014 and my Note 3.. both work perfectly.
Hi gurus,
The Idea is to make the the 64 gb card (that working fine on my laptop) work on my note 10.1.
Please help .
What could be the possible reason.

As you have tried several things, can you please tell us exactly what your situation is now so we can help you.
If the card is a used one, it may have been formatted as FAT32, to work in a non-Sdxc compatible device. The Sdxc capable note may boycott the card because of violation of the specs, so reformat it to exFat.
It was similar with 4GB SD cards, which shall not exist by spec, but worked fine in Sd devices, not in Sdhc ones.
Experiencing the same

Hi maainux, I'm experiencing the same problem here, have you found any solution?
Mine is a SM-P601 / Android 4.3 / Build: JSS15J.P601UBUBMJ4 / Baseband: P601UBUBMJ1 (Fully Stock)
I tried 3 64gb micro sd card: SanDisk Ultra, Samsung, and a generic one. For both 3 the same results, as following:
1 - If I let the tablet format the card (exFAT), it can be mounted but gets suddenly unmounted when I try to write on it and shows TOTAL SPACE :0.0 bytes just like yours. I installed BTSync, when I tried to configure the sync on the tabled by selecting the sd card as the destination folder for the files, the app give a message saying it don't have permission to access that folder and gets unmounted. Tried rebooting, remounting, reinserting, and nothing change.
2 - If I format to fat32 as a logical partition using Minitool Partition Wizard, I get the same behavior as above description.
3 - If I format to fat32 as a primary partition using Minitool Partition Wizard, I can create folders but can't delete them, when I try to delete via "My Files" it says "deletion failed". I tried ES File Explorer, get the same. I was able to configure BTSync, it can copy the files from my PC folder, but when I delete some file in the PC it can't be deleted on the tablet and the BTSync app shows a message stating it can't identify the destination folder on the tablet.
I have some micro sd cards laying around, tried SanDisk 32gb, 16gb and 8gb, both 3 worked flawlessly on the tablet. I noticed the tablet format any <32gb card as fat32, and the 64gb as exFat, this make me think that was related to file system format, but it's not. Seems something related to permissions, like the KitKat 4.4 guys are experiencing. The point is I'm completely newbie on Android and have ZERO knowledge on Linux/Unix, so I have no Idea on how to solve this.
Can you guys help me?
Thanks in advance.
Hi guys
have you found any solution?
Thanks

64 GB NTFS Card & TWRP Issue

Hi to all members and senior developers,
I have purchased a 64 GB Micro SD Card (Kingston - Class 10). It came pre-formatted in exFat format. I formatted it in NTFS. Now the issue is that my Samsung S4 recognizes card but TWRP (latest - 3.0.2.0) does not recognize it. It shows 0 MB when i try to mount the card. Also i am unable to mount the card. I know this thread have been answered with a solution that format it in FAT32 format but i don't want to do this because i have some movies and data larger than 4GB. I don't want to format it again so i have to move all my data again to my pc then to sd card.. it is a headache. Any solution will be appreciated. I wont go for FAT32 ! Never how is exFat ... i mean the read write speed is fine on this partition table or not ? Answer soon. Thanks to all
