Verizon [SCH-I435] Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini recovery update? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am pretty good at searching the net, but for the life of me I can't find anything regarding a custom recovery or custom roms for this device.
I have seen justloves's recent post regarding knox, and I'm not worried about tripping mine, as I have never relied on warranties anyway. Assuming that voiding the warranty is the only issue.
Can anyone shed some light for me, and point me in the right direction? I like my device stock just fine, but I decided the other day that its time to root and customize. I did get it rooted via saferoot, but couldn't find anything in the way of custom recoveries/roms.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

There are a few people working on it atm, mostly lovejoy though I help when I can. Slow going for the most part. As of now there is no custom recovery available. I was talking to him the other day and on his last attempt he softbricked the phone. There are a few roms that have been made by various forum members but nothing "mainstream"... just debloated stock.

i need help on mines SCH-I435 need to sim unlock can't find nothing on this model wish i could do more like root & get cwm and unlock sim can someone help me thanks

Does this mean people with a rooted i435 will need to un- and then re-root to update (OTA) to Kitkat when Verizon/Samsung push it to the device? I don't want to be stuck on 4.2.2 forever because of lack of support for the Verizon model.

Return to Stock - Without USB?

Hi folks. First post here and a bit of a weird one, I’m hoping some of you with more experience in rooting etc can point me in the right direction. I’ve got a GSM Galaxy Nexus which I previously rooted to get updates as I was stuck with some horrible build that had to go through Samsung and my carrier to update.
Now my USB port is faulty and I want to get it serviced under warranty but I don’t want them blaming the root access and trying to squirm out of it. I’m actually running a stock ROM of ICS so I don't need to change that - but I still have CWM installed along with its custom recovery mode(?), Superuser and the bootloader is unlocked.
Can anybody give me some suggestions on how I could undo this, preferably limiting my use of USB or eschewing it all together? It’s so unstable I’m really afraid of bricking the device. I want to just make it look as stock as possible so things go smoothly with the service or replacement.
I found suggestions in some threads for using 'Mobile ODIN'. Can anyone tell me if this would help? Thanks!
I've read on here multiple times that they will repair it even if rooted...maybe someone can confirm.
I think there is a apps on the market called adb wireless... May be it can help you!

Just get a stock ROM zip and you can use glados app to lock the boot loader when rooted then flash the stock fw after wiping system the stock system will wipe the custom recovery on boot enjoy

about rooting. please help!

hi all I'm trying to root my phone but there is so many different ways to tour. I would like the simplest way to root but I want it to do everything that all rooting software would do. I've come across one click options and would like to do those since I don't have to use my computer. Please help! Thanks
you are so going to get bashed in here for asking that question. The expectation is that everybody reads everything they can and then if they are hung up on something they can post a question. I am a relative noob although I have lurked on this site for a few years. I don't bash anybody though.
I understand your frustration.
I simply flashed a single .tar file to my phone while my phone was in download mode. I felt it was very simple using windows on my Mac. There is the very simple Exynos exploit file somewhere here where you download it and basically install it. I thought that this Exynos installation did something to the camera app.
Hopefully, somebody here will help you determine what is best for you. I really haven't tried many methods of root. I like to stick with one I am familiar with since a lot things might go wrong if not done right.
I am not sure what you mean by having the root method do everything that all rooting software would do. When you root you are just gaining access to portions of your phones files that are locked when you buy it. If you want more 'stuff' then you would flash a custom rom after rooting
Thanks for not bashing me. I'm def a noob and I'm new to the android community. I moved from an iPhone to galaxy n2 so I'm learning as I go. Thanks for your help!

Check out Chainfire's method for rooting. It's very simple, there is even a video instruction going step by step. It took me 5 minutes and I came from an Iphone. Head on over to the Original android development subforum, you'll see it there. Good luck!
Google "exynos abuse" if you have not already taken the ota update.

I used the exynos abuse because I didn't need to use my computer to do it and it worked fine. But once I did the latest OTA update from AT&T, I lost root. So I did the Chainfire method. (See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980644 )
t's really easy and took about 5 min.

Just got my Note 2 about 3 weeks ago and haven't ventured into rooting it yet, BUT I did research here on XDA about rooting before doing it to my Galaxy S2 (AT&T) and the one thing I want to mention is to take your time are read to confirm whether or not the procedures you're looking at are for the Note 2 AND for the variant you have. Using the wrong process (rooting, kerneling, installing custom rom) can cause all sorts of problems, so don't be impatient if you don't know what you're doing. And by all means DO A COMPLETE BACKUP before you do any rooting.
That said, when I did root my S2, it was a very easy process...took all of about 15 minutes to backup, root, install custom rom, etc.
Good luck...and let us know how you do!

US Cellular GS3 (SCH-R530U) 4.1.2 Rooting??

Hey everyone,
I have rooted my GS3 prior to US Cellular's update to android 4.1.2, but after the update, every rooting method I have tried has failed. I almost bricked my phone the other day attempting to use a toolkit.... It tripped teh flash counter apparently and my device status was "Modified" instead of normal. I downloaded the Samsung update tool for the USCC GS3, and did a manual update after i discovered that my prior rooting attempt tripped the flash counter, disabled my Wifi, and caused me to be unable to download an OTA update.
The question is this...... what rooting method shoudl I be using for the USCC Galaxy S3, running 4.1.2? I'd love to be able to block ads again....... and I'd like to stay with the base OS if possible (not flashing it atm)'
Thanks in advance!

Using that method should would, oldest method and always proves true. Like always, you're responsible for everything.
Tripping the flash counter doesn't matter... I have never had USC reject warranty service, and I don't use any counter reset tools.
Unfortunately, XDA isn't the best place to find support for USC phones... Do a Google search for TeamUSCellular and go there for detailed step by step guides.
Then, look carefully at some of the ROMs here on XDA... Several of the ones that use Aroma support multiple carriers.

Root build 4.1.2?
Newb here,
Has anyone had any success in rooting the US Cellular SCH-R530 with build 4.1.2? I donated to the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit cause but after an auto update the most recent build listed for US Cellular is still 4.1.1.
Thanks!

No I didn't 'ready' it but I did read it and that post was from a week ago. So I am following up as a lot can happen in 1 week. Either way, TeamUSCellular does not have anything on it at all. But thanks for all your help. I am now regretting the fact that I donated to the development of the toolkit. I guess if this isn't a good place to find help on US Cellular phones then there shouldn't be any US Cellular phones in the toolkit, but yet there is....hmmmm.

I think you need to look a little closer.
Go to Forum, go to the SG3 Development forum, go to SG3 Guides & Tutorials, then the 5th topic down is what you want (How To Root Jelly Bean LK5 & MB1).
It takes you step by step and even provides links to the files you need.
I just used this last week on a friend phone and it worked fine.

New to Anything samsung

Hi, I'm getting a galaxy s3 tomorrow. I was just wondering if someone would give me a run down of anything I should know. My last phone was an inspire 4g. I don't know what a modem is. I was wondering what people are talking about "tripped flash counter" is it important? What is it? Any thing else like that, it would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the the dark side!!! Well the tripped flash counter is a Samsung can check to see how many times your flashed a non Samsung kernel on the phone using Odin or heimdall. Its important to have it at 0 if your sending your phone back to Samsung for repairs or if your exchanging for a new one with att.you can look up chainfire on xda. He has a app call triangle away which is can reset the flash counter.if you find his thread on xda he explains the flash counter a lot better. The only other important things I believe you should know is you can flash some T-Mobile galaxy s3 roms (search the thread to make sure tho), as you may know every phone is different so some kernels may work for you others may not and the root method is different from HTCs so read the stickes and theards or find a update to date video on how to root. I hope you enjoy this beast of a phone!!! Once again welcome

Thanks for the help, i just dont have much money and since im coming from an HTC phone i know its going to be different...dont want a very expensive paper weight do i??QUOTE=blackstar_329;39618110]Welcome to the the dark side!!! Since you'll be getting the att model look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2042775 ape made an excellent tutorial for beginners when it comes to rooting the s3. it has pictures and he even package a root kit follow the instructions and you should be fine. Before trying make sure you have a good understanding of it first. I believe it even helps you install cwm. Once your Rooted if you want twrp just download its either goo. Im or too manager I don't remember from the android market and install twrp from there. Once again if you run into a problem search the thread first because more then likely someone had that same problem or you can message me and I will try my best to help you and guide you through it. Unlike your HTC you have to try really hard to brick a Samsung phone...other than that make backups of your EFS, IMEI, and keep a nandroid of rooted stock ROM on hand and you are good to go. Like more Galaxy S phones its fairly fool proof and if something happens you can get out of it. Don't flash anything for the international version. I prefer TWRP for recovery because its user interface is a lot better but to each there own.

New to Rooting.

I've been rooting since OG Evo days, but only played with that, the s2, and s3. Rooting was easy as pie. But with all this knox stuff I'm wary.
I recently read reports of people sending in their phones to both Samsung and tmobile and getting it back with knox restored but still maintaining sim unlocks. So obviously it's a well kept firmware they flash or perhaps signatures.
This in mind I used kingoapp, and root was easy. Just decline the recovery install and you'll maintain 0x0. But after this new information I'm still worried to trip knox for fear those restores we're just a fluke.
Anybody have luck with safestrap? I heard/read it doesn't replace recovery so it also won't trip knox? Also, as long as I don't flash kernels or recovery I'll be good right? Like i can delete bloat or install at root level to /system and I'll be fine?

First off, the above poster is wrong... can't believe he asks for a thank. When you install a custom recovery, that is when you trip Knox. There a method to install a custom ROM w/o a recovery using Mobile Odin Pro. I know nothing about that but have read here that it works. You just can't flash custom kernel. I went ahead and flash a custom recovery because I don't care about Knox and will never send this phone to Samsung for warranty repair.

Just the fact most of us have insurance plans; if we discover a problem such as faulty gps or screen displacement, etc, tmobile fixes it for us anyway, right?
So it really doesn't matter if we trip knox, correct???

Either way it won't matter...until I do eventually get a new handset but even then I know enough about rooting I shouldn't need to repair this one once paid off and detached from my account.

Hey Nature! just wanted to add my 0.02, ok theres a difference between rooting, and a difference between flashing recoveries, kernels, roms, and what have you.
ill give a brief explanation in the differences. The Colors of the titles indicate how safe/dangerous it is to modify one of these things and wether it will void your warranty, Green=Wont void your warranty, and easily reversible. Orange=Void Warranty, Reversible, But starting to get Dangerous, Red=Definitely VVoids Warranty, and if screwed up, could ruin/brick your devvice Definitely Voids Warranty, and if screwed up, could ruin/brick your devvice
Rooting: When you are rooting your device, you are basically forcing your stock version of android to allow you (the user) root access, therefore allowing you to bypass/allow signature verification for apps, now this could be anything from homebrew apps that you are making yourself...to the naughty pirated apps, and i dont encourage the latter. By giving yourself root access to your phone, your allowing the next to happen:
Flashing a Custom Recovery: Ok ill explain this as simple as i can...Mostly all if not ALL android phones have a stock recovery, this is a safeguard in case some kind of software fault happened in the phone(stock software fault or what have you). Flashing a custom recovery would be your next step after Rooting a device (IF) you want to go further than apps, meaning Kernels, Roms etc. Now the reason you must Root your device in order to install a custom recovery, is because like explained above signature verification....Now this is when you begin to tread in warranty territory, once flashing a custom recovery...your warranty has become VOID, however what the custom recovery allows you to do is a multitude of things, but the most major is Flashing .ZIP files, which most roms are in the form of, now not only Roms are in ZIP files, so are kernels, mods, baseband firmwares, etc, with that being said, different phones/devices use different methods of flashing roms, lets say for example you somehow screwed something up on a samsung really bad, and it wont boot, however, you can still get into download mode...then you're safe, because samsung uses Odin to flash the entire phone back to stock meaning Recovery/aBoot/Data/System and bring you right back, but if you hard brick it, theres only 3 ways out from that...and they all suck....number one, is call me and send it to me to Jtag it for you ..but it takes long and its not that cheap, #2, Desolder the chip (whichever it is on the device that has caused the problem) and replace it...and thats not an easy task at all, ive done it once to an S3 successfully, after that i never wanted to do it again, and this was back when they were really expensive, and lastly....#3.....and this one is the worse....go buy a new one SO BE CAREFUL!
ROMS: So now that we have a custom recovery, a rom is basically a heavily modified version of Android! and let me tell ya, i love them...i love so many of them, there are sooo many different things that you can do with roms, but the most desired from what ive gathered, is so people can remove the bloatware that comes with their phone when they buy it from the carrier/manufacturer. Thats not all tho, there is way too much to get into, but some roms allow you to Overclock your phones CPU/GPU, and change the Behaviors of the phones hardware, and the major component in roms that allows that is the Kernel.
Kernel: Now dont totally quote me here, im still learning kernels, but a kernel is basically the binary software in the phone, almost like a bios that when modified from stock, changes the behavior of the MOST of the hardware, not all. Now i could be wrong and anyone please feel free to correct me, now i do want to give you a shot of my own advice here...if you dont know what you are doing, kernels are dangerous to a noobie..before i started messing with roms and kernels, i tried to get the best understanding i could, and ill be honest with you, i blew up a couple S3's doing so. but im still learning. so if you're unweary or still not educated enough in the hobby to get too it, please read more up on it, because as none of these guys here that are devs nor people like myself that are trying to help intend to destroy your device on you, so please be careful for your own device's safety, and to save yourself money and a broken heart.
Knox: Ok now correct me if im wrong here, because im still learning as this is new to me, i only saw it on the MJA bootloader on the S4 on Jellybean from Sprint when they first OTA'd it, but knox looks to be Samsungs pathetic try of not lettings us Access the devices binary software, like an encryption, or to only let us access and modify certain things, also samsung has added a flash counter, which will tell them how many times you have flashed a new rom, however there are ways around these things, google and the search bar are you best friends to start, and we can help too.
I Hope this helped and shed some light on some information, and please if anyone has anything to add or to correct me if im wrong anywhere please do so ^_^
P.S. To be totally honest, theres always a way to restore your device and even get the flash counter back to 0 again and put everything back to normal, if an experienced tech looks at it and puts it in download mode unless all is restored, hell be able to see everything, but honestly, if you pay off the phone, you havve nothing to worry about, but then again, i dont care much for warranties, so it all depends on how savvy with fixing problems when they go wrong, but if you ever need i can help you, im pretty experienced when it comes to everything but developing atm, i was a microelectronics major in college, so my expertise is mainly in hardware i.e. if you hard/soft brick the devvice i can usually get it out of that.
please excuse my typing, i type extremely fast, and i have a mechanical keyboard and i think some lettings are startings to give way such as the V key.

Oh and please i Highly suggest using Philz Touch!
Code:
http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/hltetmo
Thats for the HLTETMO version, which is our versions in this forum, all credit to phil ofcourse, it is basically CWM, but so much more user friendly and advanced with much more options, there are two files there, you obviously want the latest version, and there are two ways to do it, if you download the tar.md5 you must use Odin, and put your phone in download/odin mode, very easily done (turn it off unplug usb and press Home+Vol Dwn+Pwr) then once the screen pops up press Vol Up and then plug the USB in, and follow the instructions of w/e tutorial you are ready, but be very careful in odin mode, if you disturb the phone while its flashing you will most likely brick it, and the .zip is considering you already have a custom recovery and you can just flash it through there.

Hey Nature! just wanted to add my 0.02, ok theres a difference between rooting, and a difference between flashing recoveries, kernels, roms, and what have you.
ill give a brief explanation in the differences.

Ty for the explanation. Unfortunately, that is if you took the time to write that or just copied, I knew most if not all of the risks. As I said earlier I've been rooting since gingerbread.
However, it's quite informative and anybody else who is new to rooting shall find it helpful.
Kernels are more or less a bios, if you will. But they are specific to builds. You can't use aosp on tw and vice versa. There are other key features but I can't remember off the top of my head. Basically no kernel =/= no phone or no features such as camera.
You're right about the s4, but if I'm not mistaken it was believed to be an eFuse, as was for the note 3 too. Although other members have said they got it back reset, 0x0, and sim unlocks intact to fix other issues like broken gps. Therefore it is believed to be software at a signature level.
And I'll look into philz, loved it on the s3. If you ever have q's about root feel free to pm me

He's not wrong. There are a couple different methods of rooting that don't require a custom recovery, therefore don't trip Knox.
