[Q] Recover deleted photos - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi All,
Phone Model - Galaxy Nexus i9250
Android Version - 4.3
Build Number - JWR66Y
I accidentally deleted few of the photographs from the gallery day before yesterday, I wanted to restore the photos and I googled around and found some some softwares which are capable of doing that
My phone is not rooted so I don't have SuperUser permissions
Wondershare Dr. Fone for android - It is able to detect my phone but it says "SU" permissions needs to be granted
I have a file recovery software installed on PC so I can use it get the data recovered from phone, but my Galaxy Nexus is being detected by the PC as "Portable Media Player" instead of a USB storage device. So any way I can make my phone be detected as USB storage device by my PC

Any help ?

I do not believe you can connect Gnex as mass storage device, I believe some have tried but I recall it always ending in failure (search xda for galaxy nexus mass storage, or tuna mass storage or something like that for more details or to see if anyone was ever able to get that working)
rooting is fairly easy though if you need su(superuser aka root permission) and I believe there are ways to do that without having to wipe the device fully.
I will try to help you find that method of rooting if you need it and would like to try so that you can attempt using an application that requires su(but even then it might not be able to fully recover everything you hope for. But could for sure be worth the try )
Let me know if you need help finding the info

I did just find something else on this.
Someone mentioned that they used nexus root toolkit to make a full backup of device(which can also be done using adb I believe) and you don't need root perms to do that.
They then scanned that with recovery program and got back most of what they had deleted.
Problem arises if you have been using device a LOT since deleting the files and the deleted blocks have started to get overwritten. (I might suggest making the full backup, placing that onto a USB drive or sdcard, that way you can just scan that drive with program and hopefully get results you are looking for since THAT can be mounted as mass storage device)

[Q] Desperate newbie with deleted files problem….help please!!

I have a real cry for help!
Somehow all my pictures disappeared from my Galaxy Nexus. My only possible explanation (since it could not have decided to delete them itself!) is that I must have been a complete idiot and last night when I thought I was deleting a video I had just taken I must deleted the camera directory itself. This is supported by the fact that there was no ‘camera’ directory when I looked this morning. I then took a new photo and the directory reappeared. I have plenty of experience with PC’s but I’m a newbie with smartphones. I figured if I don’t write any more files to the phone then most of the actual data should still be there so I hoped to do some kind of undelete.
I’ve done some research and it looks like the ‘feature’ of only connecting as an MTP device (rather than USB mass storage) is potentially a killer blow. Without an assigned drive letter it seems that none of the usual recovery programmes will recognise the phone.
In theory an alternative might be to take a complete image of the phone contents and somehow recover the data from here?
I am pretty desperate as I have five months of pictures/videos of my kids etc, and most of that data must still be on the phone – but how to get to it?
Finally – yes I am a complete plonker, I shouldn’t have made such a stupid mistake and I should have backed up the phone or the pictures. I have learned my lesson. But given that, is there anything I can do?
BTW - the phone came from 3 network (via a reseller) and I have not touched it with respect to unlocking/rooting etc. It is in the state I received it.
HELP please!
Thanks very much...........
I believe the MTP vs. USB Mass storage would be a driver thing. There are many different versions of drivers so its possible there are ones that will mount the phone with a drive letter. I can think of some other things to try (Boot into fastboot mode by turning phone off then powering on by holding power, volume up and volume down at the same time and holding till it vibrates). You could also try Disk Management under windows to see if you can assign a letter
In the future I highly recommend setting up a google account and using Google Photo/Instant Upload to keep a backup of your photos. You dont even have to sync anything else
Thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated.
I’ve now tried going into fastboot mode and connecting to PC but no joy – Windows recognises there is a device connected (usually ID’d as an OMAP4440) but can’t find a driver.
Disk Management also doesn’t show the Nexus as a drive and therefore won’t allow a Drive letter to be assigned.
Try these (obviously no guarantees and I havent used any personally)

EDIT: Found another:
http://www.wondershare.com/disk-utility/recover-deleted-photos-from-nexus-s-and-galaxy-nexus.html
Thanks again, I appreciate all suggestions. Yes I have come across these and unfortunately they don’t solve my issue. The last two are amongst those I’d seen reported as not working as they need a drive letter. I had installed both anyway but found that to be true (
The first requires root access which I don’t have. If I understand correctly, to root I’ll need to unlock the bootloader first, and unlocking will erase all the data anyway??
Unfortunately, you are out of luck. You cannot mount the storage on a GNex in USB Mass Storage mode, and I am pretty sure that none of the "undelete" programs that run in Android support ext4 (which is what our GNex internal storage is formatted).
If you are running 4.0.1 or 4.0.2, you can still get root access without losing your data (but not on 4.0.4), but I can't see how it will help you given what I mentioned above.
I am on 4.04 so sounds like I can't get root access without overwriting, can I roll back to 4.01/2 without overwriting the data? (sounds unlikely but I have to ask - I upgraded from 4.02 without losing data....).
If not, is there a way to get a data image without rooting? That way at least I have the data preserved if at some future point it becomes possible to do an undelete on Ext4 data??

I believe there are utilities to "do an undelete" on ext4. The problem is how to get access to the data image. I don't really know of any way to pull off the data partition of a GNex to your computer, but it may be possible.
Have a look at this thread. I think shaaXo managed to find a way for your computer to see the memory on the GNex and likely dump it (although it is not very user-friendly).
That sucks. If it's deleted, it's gone for good. Sorry, buddy.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Thanks very much I will go through that post and see where I get to!
Edit! - uh-oh, taking a quick look it seems you need to use CWM, which I take to be ClockworkMod, which I thought required the phone to be rooted to install it? And if I understand correctly, rooting requires an unlocked bootloader, which wipes your data??
I will take a deeper look in case I've misunderstood (very likely), but am I thinking clearly here?

[Q]How to recover deleted video. Not rooted S3.

Hey guys,
A friend of mine got a video on his phone deleted by another friend and was just wondering what options are there to recover it. I did a bit of research and found out that the new OS 4.0+ changed the USB mass storage system and is not letting windows manage it anymore. I've looked at multiple data recovery softwares already but I don't think its the software that I need help with, more like I need help with certain configurations or work arounds to be able to mount the phone's internal memory. Thanks ahead of time.
It's gone yo. You cant recover it.

Try using this, no guarantee it will recover your file but worth a try. :good:
No way to recover unless you are rooted.
I recovered some pictures but never tried videos
dang.. i'll do some more research and give that app a try. thanks for your input guys and if i find a solution.
Have you ever heard about sgh i747 unlock? My friend can not use at&t i747 unless removing network lock from AT&T?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Sorry I have no idea what that is. I've tried my other option with trying to run the software on a mac instead but no luck. If anyone finds anything please feel free to drop a message here. Thanks!!
I am afraid i don't remember where i saw the thread but i have seen where some dev's have managed to create methods to mount the internal flash memory through the external flash bus and also mount them as mass storage devices in windows, i'm pretty sure they were in the development sub-forum. As far as the actual recovery if you can get the internal memory mounted in such a way that data recovery software is able to see it (MTP or Mass Storage) from windows you are still looking at a crap shoot. Given the fact that people have been able to recover deleted software tells us pretty conclusively that when a file is deleted in android it is simply allocated as free, the same as a conventional hard drive. As long as all the sectors the file(s) in question occupy have not been over written then a recovery is possible (still not guaranteed).
EDIT - Here is the thread i was talking about regarding mass storage.
You can recover deleted videos from non rooted S3 with android data recovery software, see this solution: non rooted android phone data recovery
It helped me before. hope this helps you too.

[Q] [HELP] Some photos/videos deleted

Hey guys!
I was at a concert last night and took some photos/videos with my ZL. But when I tried to transfer them to my computer, I got some problems. All I did was:
> Connected my ZL to PC via usb in MTP mode
> Created a new folder in my computer
> Opened the desired folder (in this case, Internal Strorage > DCIM > 100ANDRO)
> Then, I simply dragged the 100ANDRO folder to the new one I created
But after doing this, some trouble: the 100ANDRO disappeared from my phone internal storage and appeared EMPTY inside the folder I created before. Result: I've lost all the photos and videos.
I don't even know if I'm posting on the right area, but all I want is to recover the disappeared files. Tried to google a solution. I even found it, but for that I have to root my phone, and I don't want to do this 'cause it's in warranty period yet.
Questions: Can I have my photos/videos back without rooting my phone? If I really have to root it to have my photos/videos back, what I have to do? Do someone knows what happened? PLEASE HELP MEEEE :crying:
@EDIT
Okay, I realized that the only way is rooting my phone. Can anyone explain step-to-step or indicate a thread that a noob can understand?

I'm using 4.4, with 10.5.A.0.230.
you removed device without close usb conection.
It's normal lose data when do this way.
that things were on SD, i think you'll see nomore. Or, use another ZL and copy the original files.

I didn't remove the device before I realized the trouble I was in. By the way, I've done this process so many times before and never had a problem like this, always safely removing my device.
The photos and videos were on Internal Storage. If them were on the SD card, I think I could recover the files; but since I can't connect my ZL in USB Mass Storage mode, pc applications can't scan it to try to recover the files.
I found some ways to try to recover the files w/ an application named DiskDigger, for Android. But in order to use it, I have to root my device first. Anyone ever used this app? Does it really works? What's the best, safely or simply way to root my device for a noob like me? I'm using a C6503 running 4.4 on 10.5.A.0.230 with unlocked bootloader.
why can't connect in MSC?

According to some information I found over the internet, Google disabled Mass Storage mode in newer Android versions.

Yep. But the Internal Storage isn't available in Mass Storage mode, only the SD card. Since the photos I want to recover were on the internal storage, it don't works for me.
Can you indicate me the best/easier way to root my phone?

I tried to follow the instructions in the link you posted, but I have problems with the second step. It redirects me to this thread, but since I don't have recovery and can't flash the kernel that is disponibilized, I got an error that says that it cant write the boot 'cause remote command is not allowed or something like this. So, I can't flash the kernel with recovery and can't root. Some tips about this?
you must have a unlocked bootloader.
i think your is locked.
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration". If there is:
Bootloader unlock allowed - Yes << this means that your Bootloader is Locked
Bootloader Unlocked - Yes << this means that your bootloader is unlocked

Ok, so my device allows me to unlock my bootloader... I read in somewhere here in xda that having my bootloader unlocked cause the loss of the Bravia Engine 2. Is it really true? Or it's a risk that may occur?

Recover deleted files

While updating to lollipop i accidentally relocked and unlocked the bootloader resulting in a full memory wipe but i had my college work on there so i really need to recover the data lost but upon connecting the phone to the pc it appears as "portable device" which is not detected by recovery tools as well as the android apps as the undeleter root couldn't recover the data i need so is there a way to
1- connect htc one m8 to the pc as usb storage (aka removable disk)
2- another way to recover files
Thanks in advance
The issue is that Android now mounts internal storage by MTP, as opposed to the old Mass USB storage format. So computer's can no longer read the memory like its a USB drive. I think at some point (probably not even for this phone) I saw a method to dump the files in order to perform a file recovery, but it was pretty complicated and looked like a PITA.
You can try some apps on the Play Store that claim to recover files (using the phone itself, not a computer). But I've never used any, can't vouch for them, and don't know if they really work. Also keep in mind, the more you use the phone, the higher the likelihood that the files you want will be overwritten by other data.
Good luck. But in the future you have to remember to backup important personal data before making any major changes or mods to the device. I never fail to be disappointed at how many folks never bother to backup their important data; than freak out about it once its lost. Most of the time, at that point its too late. You should have been backing it up all along. If its important to you, back it up.
Well sir thank ypu for your help i don't think ill be able not to use the phone all that long as well as im now facing that the wifi wont open which is really annoying

How to recover (undelete) deleted files from internal memory of SM-P605?

I have unfortunately lost more than 10 GB of data which was stored on internal memory of my Note 10.1 2014 LTE, deleted somehow, and I'm not sure what has caused that (I'm suspicious of Clean Master app though). Hopefully I have backup of most of that data, but desperately tried to recover the rest, to no avail. Searched for and tried some recovery tools and apps, but apparently all of them need root access to my device. My device is not rooted and I have not yet done so. Browsing this forum I learned some about rooting and other related things, thanks to all who share their valuable knowledge here, and below are a couple of questions:
(Considering all I need is recovering deleted files from internal memory) is there someway to perform a recovery on internal storage using Download or Recovery modes (those accessed by unlock+volume+home keys), by a recovery tool installed on a PC, without the need to root the device? Does those modes in anyway make it possible to have access to internal storage as a USB mass storage like old versions of android (perhaps using Odin or any other tool)?
If the only way is rooting the device, would you please introduce the safest way to do so, without losing the currently installed apps and their data and settings. I found many threads in this forum introducing different ways to root, but I'm a novice and can't choose the proper way, need more help. My device specs are as follows:
SM-P605
android 4.4.2
Build number: KOT49H.P605ZSUCOD1
Your early reply would by highly appreciated.
p.s. Does any one know if Clean Master app creates a log file of what it does? and its path?

Nope you need to root the device. Here is the info, pretty easy and you could go back to your none rooted without issue
