well it isnt fooling exactly, the thing is if u are giving it to a service centre its most probably because of a hardware issue (softwares u can always correct urself)........so they do not check your software part too rigorously..all they look into is if your phone is not much modified..that you can simply correct by flashing the latest firmware

HAVe you tested to see if your ta is backed up correctly. I was a little too impatient and unlocked my bootloader before knowing anything about ta and drm. Luckily my device is 2 weeks away from being out of warranty, and its been issue free asside from dots in my pics (knock on wood)

So I have a T-Mobile Samsung gs2 that locked up on me. I took it to T-Mobile store and they refered me to a shops that ended up fixing it for me. I believe they changed the imei number. But when they did this it went back to GB when I originally had the 4.0.4. Now he said he could flash and install update but will charge. So my question is it a regular rooting and flashing which I know I can do myself or is it really something only he can do. I really don't feelfeel paying for something I know I can do myself. Thank you in advance
Gingerbread is what originally comes with the phone, there was an upgrade to ICS later on.
To your question, If its stock, you can just upgrade to ICS through kies (which he's gonna do). No rooting etc necessary, unless you want to later. Do it yourself, he's scamming you!

I thought the same thing but when I did the upgrade through Kies it ended up getting locked again so I had to take it back to the guy. That's when he mentioned rooting and flashing. I told him I could do it but he made it seem like it's something he should do.

Yea after finding out what he they did I looked up what it was to change the imei number, because I never had this problem before, I understand its a bad thing. But I wasn't the one who did it. I was actually surprised T-Mobile told me to take it in to have this done. But what I've learned is mobile can't tell when this is done. So I'm ok with it and besides soon as the note 2 comes out I'm selling the phone. It's unlocked as well so I'll prob sell it to an AT&T user. Thanks for heads up though bro

You could also use ODIN, instead of Kies, to flash the stock recoveries, you just need to look for the files on here!
Edit, found a guide that will help you get back to "fresh" stock, so that you can upgrade to ICS with Kies.

I assumed he was scamming because the OP mention the IMEI number was changed (fishy), and mostly likely flashed a custom or modified gingerbread ROM, that's why Kies won't read the phone. If the repair person brought the phone back to full stock, it should be able to connect no problem, which doesn't look like he did.

yea he did change the imei number. and kies updated just fine. it brough my phone back to 4.0.4 but the problem was that after the update the phone got locked again. im guessing the imei number went back to its original. so my thing is im wondering if i root and flash an updated zip will my phone lock again. from my understanding flashing shouldnt mess with the imei number but thats why i wanted advice from people on this site. im still a nood but was able to learn what i know from this site. thanks again bro
imei
I dont think the imei is a problem.
I had in the past the galaxy and glaxy 4g that had a changed imei (dou to unlocking)
it never gave me any problems.

So after changing imei number you rooted and were able to to flash without a prob? Now is this just a one time flash or multiple?
One can change the IMEI number? that is crazy, this is like changing the VIN number of the car, how is it even possible?

The phone is glitchy because of the crap apps preinstalled by Sony which are eating a lot of ram memory. You can root your device and then remove some useless stuff. Here is a list of removable apps preinstalled by Sony http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671314. Also, can i ask what fw version do you have installed?

It's not the phone fault it's the firmware/software,which update did you install ICS 4.0.4,ICS is very laggy on xperia arc, that's the way it is,it's not problem with the phone.
I have installed on my Xperia Arc fw:ICS 4.0.4 .587,a flashed Ultimate HD 2.0,It's pretty fast, and stable.Gaming runs grate, there are no bloatwares.

Since i updated to my wifes and eldest daughters Xperia S to the latest UK SIM free firmware (.200 i think it is) the phone refuses to stick with the keyboard you choose which is a bit annoying given they have both purchased Swype, any solutions on how to stop it reverting to the Xperia keyboard.
(they wont let me root them so thats not an option)

Did you try setting the default input method in "Languages and input" under settings? I've that option on my phone
yeah and before you know it both phones have reverted to the Xperia keyboard.
Unfortunately that was a known issue with the .200 firmware. I think paid widgets would also disappear from the home screen after a reboot in this firmware.
The latest firmware available for the Xperia S is 6.2.B.1.96. This update doesn't have those issues anymore. I am on O2 UK and the latest update shown for me was .200. I used flashtool to flash a ftf file of the latest. 96 update on to my phone. I do not have these issues with the keyboard or widgets disappearing.
Your best bet is to flash the .96 firmware on to these phones. It is like doing an official update and doesn't invalidate any warranties you may have on your devices.
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
Tar mate, i might have to go down that road (if i can persuade them) because its driving them a bit mental.
I noticed yesterday on my daughters Xperia S it refuses to let you use icon packs with Nova Launcher as well, well i lie, it will let you pick them and kid you in to thinking they are there and before you know it the phone has reverted back to stock.
Sony should have shot the Xperia S at birth, its not been right or perfectly usable in stock form since it was released.
just flash the latest firmware with flashtool, it's not unofficial or voids any warranty or anything like that. it's fine and good to use

LOL after 25 years of marriage i can tell you now it will result in my knackers being fed to the dog
I'm root and unlocked bootloader and I want to know if xperia ZL suffers from "Sleep of Death" issue like the Z...and does the fix applied to ZL as well..
Cause my zl kinda suffer from it...after a reboot the phone shut itself..it will stay longer if I connected to a charger but after a long period it will shut it self again...I think it's a software issue cause when in cwm, it doesn't shut down...but I have formatted to factory state and everything stock but the problem still persist...
I'm on latest 2.67 firmware and stock kernel but will relocking the bootloader will save my phone...if not, I'm gonna try to claim warranty and hopping they don't detect I'm already void the warranty even I'm relock again...

I think we are to premature to say about issues with root, modified or custom roms because the Zl, Z ,Z1 they are babys come out few mounts ago and all the developers are trying hard to make it fly. I remember my HD2, I get that phone after 2 years of his release and I was flashing tons of roms everyday and I find many powerful and stable roms. So be patient.

as far as i understand, its not because u rooted or unlocked but bcuz of a problem with the battery management syste(BMS).
there appears to be sum fault with battery or the bms, which causes the phone to shutdown.
unfortunately, the only solution is to change the battery. u will have to return ur phone to sony. but to claim warranty, u must unroot and relock the bootloader.
mind you, there is only a small number of phones with this problem.
this same issue happend with my ZL too. i returned and within one week, they returned a brand new phone to me.
mine was fully stock, locked bootloader and unrooted(the previous and the newer too)
new is working awesome.
hope this helps, if it does, u know where the thanks button is!

Odin won't unlock a phone if you mean carrier unlock.
Only the phones with the Exynos processors can be rooted.

I think he's referring to bootloader unlock, which is impossible on the U1.
Hmmm not impossible if you guys remember samfail but sammy been a bad boy the old n day will be missed
I am referring to bootloader unlock and root...There is a new Linux that I used that actually was able to get in this phone.. not root it but but pull slot of info .. all I have to do is just get to somehow verify the very last image which of course what counts.. I did soft brick so at least I pissed it off a lil bit...?
Not gonna get passed that verify part as it's looking for Samsung signature. This issue has been around for some generations now.
Yeah..... I know that is the sad truth about it. But I still try and hope. Maybe I'll slip up and somehow get lucky one day
