[Q] i747 Root or not

Hi guys,
My beloved S3 is is > 1 year old now.
I was always afraid\skeptical of rooting it as it lead to void warranty
Since it is already > 1 year old and warranty does not come into picture now, I thought why not give it a try now..
I see many S3 users are more than efficient after root.
Should I go for it ?

Rooting is a must. I went for root the day i got the phone and went reading up on rooting the S3, roms, etc. before i even got the phone.

first thing i did when i got my s3 in april was root it. and my dad has the same phone i have, and i have to say having mine rooted vs his stock, mine gets so much better battery life. and is just one of the perks of rooting other than overclock and underclock and custom roms and stuff.

...and Sammy phones are fairly fool proof when it comes to rooting and flashing

Yes, it seems like we have many 1 click tools to do this.
I just want to go slow, I want to unlock the boot loader first & then uninstall all the att crap..
that should free up some space n RAM..
Later on I can install custom ROM's and Kernels if need be..
This can be done right...

First thing you should do is make a backup of your stock unmodified system before you remove or erase anything or install roms. And also make a copy of the backup to a second location like a computer.

S3 doesn't have a locked bootloader. Reality just have to flash a rooted stock firmware in Odin and you are good to go.

4) if required i will flash custom rom and kernel else i will stick with everything stock..
The reason I want to stop at unlocked boot loader is that as of now I already have 4.1.1, and I have read everywhere that 4.1.2 isn't much of a revolution so why flash a custom ROM. People might not agree with this but I tend to think so...

Don't even think about touching anything dealing with bootloaders.
The i747 comes with an unlocked boot loader, the only one that is locked is the Verizon S3.
There have been various bricked S3 by trying to "unlock" something that isnt locked.
Read read read and search and research.
Before you wind up with a paperweight

No I am not talking about just backing everything up with titanium backup. I am talking about backing up your stock untouched system with a custom recovery like twrp or clockwork recovery. After root you will most likely have a custom recovery installed like twrp. You can boot into this custom recovery and backup the entire system in its current state, because sometimes when certain system apps are removed you will get force closes and bootloops and the only way to restore your phone is by restoring a backup, flashing a rom or pushing a system to your phone via odin.
Removing stock apps that came with your phone can be risky at times because they are often tied to other systems. Search to see what apps are safe to remove and a system backup is probably good.

Do not attempt to unlock the bootloader! It is unlocked already. Your proper plan of action should be:
Backup everything possible (MyBackup is what I used)
Root phone (several methods available, choose one)
Install custom recovery. Rom Manager can install CWM for you, while goo manager can install TWRP (I prefer twrp)
Follow instructions for installation off any Rom you download (found in the first post of that Roms thread, usually before you get to the dl link)
Before flashing or attempting any mod, make a back up of everything. And read the directions

The cool thing for you will be all the awesome tweaks and mods that have out in the last few months because you device is a little elderly. Check out the definitive mod thread in the T-Mobile S3 forum. I forget which thread its in. You can atleast double battery and speed and 20x the customization options. Once you flash a new rom it becomes a habit called flashaholism so be aware. My name is Bubba Fett and I'm a flasaholic.

Finally I did it,, My Galaxy S3 is rooted successfully..

There is no best ROM it all depends on the user. Feel free to try any of them. Just make a Nandroid backup each time before you flash a new one and follow the devs installation instructions. Good luck and have fun!

I've tried Cyanogenmod, PAC, and AOKP in the past week. All three are butter smooth and stable. You will have to cycle the battery a couple of times for it to fit in (I noticed upon initial flash, battery life was terrible).

[Q] Galaxy S3 i747 AT&T ROM Install Info

Hi all, I hope this is the correct Forum for this thread. I did search for a clear thread on how to do this, but I couldn't find one with all the info I needed, so I apologize in advance if this has been asked 1000 times.
I'm relatively new to Flashing ROM's.
I would like to install a ROM I found here (ATT_UCUEMJB_I747S3Rx_3.0_AROMA_4-13-14.zip)
The instructions clearly state that I need the d2att_I747_MJ2-bootloader_MJB-modem.zip
I have read several threads that say this bootloader is bricking phones, and much more info that makes me want to be sure I have my ducks in line before proceeding.
Can someone please explain as detailed as possible the tools and steps I need to take to install this ROM onto my phone?
Galaxy S3 i747 ATT - SIM Unlocked, Safely Rooted and on Straight Talk currently. Before Rooting this phone received the OTA 4.3 Update as well, so it is up to date.
My weakest area so far is with the bootloader. I don't quite understand the process and would really appreciate all the info I can get.

If you took the 4.3 OTA AT&T ROM update, your phone has the 4.3 mjb bootloader.
To confirm which bootloader is on your phone, boot into download mode and let us know what it says on your screen.

When I do Volume down + Home + Power it displays a screen that Cautions you about installing a Custom ROM, and then says "Press Volume down to exit or Volume up to Install custom software.

Boot into download mode by pressing the up key. That screen won't tell you if you have Knox installed or the 4.3 bootloader.

I Pressed Volume up key and this was displayed in the upper left corner on that screen with the large Android Image. It also said "Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!"

You have the 4.3 4.3 bootloader on your phone. Do not attempt to flash any lower stock ROMs via Odin as this may brick your phone. You can no longer downgrade your bootloader too.
In order for the phone to work with the mjb bootloader, you would also be running the latest modem which means you have the right items to install the SRX ROM.
You need to install a custom recovery before attempting to install a custom ROM.

Do you recommend a particular one?

I looked into that one as well. Not sure about the blacked out theme though. Is it okay in all light sources, etc?
Now I looked around into Custom Recovery install and found Clockworkmod.
I even found an app from Playstore (on this site) that is supposed to find and flash the correct one for your device in just a few moments (Rashr)
but it doesn't recognize my I747 I guess. Plus, I don't want to do anything in case I brick this phone. Forgive me for being noobish here but I'm just concerned and like to measure three times, cut once.
Any chance you could clarify this procedure for me?
I have backed up my current ROM and apps, everything using Titanium Backup and believe I'm ready to do this today.

So, after finding a noob tutorial on installing Clockworkmod, I gave it a shot.
I renamed the file to recovery.img and placed it in the root of my sdcard.
Using the terminal emulator I used the command line in the instructions and it gives me an error that says the file or directory does not exsist
Any Ideas?
EDIT: Installed Rom manager and CWM is installed.
I downloaded the SRX ROM, placed it in the root of the SDcard. I believe I must do a full Wipe (Cache and Factory Reset) and then I can install Zip file, correct?

Yes, it's your first install if that Rom. Full wipe.

Just to update the thread -
I installed the Rom and on first boot it didn't get past the Samsung Boot screen, even after waiting 10+ minutes.
2nd try was succesful and the ROM seems stable but I havent had much time to play around with it yet.

[GUIDE] how to root Sph-L710/L710T S3 4.4.2 (updated as of 8/19/2015)

I'm sorry i had the wrong links and because of this i had miss information. So i formally apologize by updating with the proper links.
this first method doesn't work with the Sph-L710T or the Sph-L710 on NJ2/NJ3
First method: You can root the stock 4.4.2 ND8/NDC:laugh:
1st. Make sure your on 4.4.2 ND8 or NDC
2nd. Download Towel Root
3rd. Place Towel Root in sdcard or internal storage
4th. With any file manager find and install Towel Root
5th. Open Towel Root and well root
6th. Go to play store and download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en and also https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en let super user update the binary
7th. Flash any recovery you want {personally i went with PhilZ Touch (this was before PhilZ had a root Option)}
8th. Enjoy your rooted stock 4.4.2 ND8/NDC
Down below is one more way too root Stock ND8/NDC/NJ2/NJ3 or NF4/OA3 (L710T) and basically any other update
(link to the almighty ODIN)
Second Method: mostly recommended
1st. Odin flash TWRP
2nd. In Odin choose PDA, PA or AP then select the TWRP Tar you just downloaded
3rd. Make sure Auto reboot is unchecked (also at this time your s3 should be in download mode)
4th. Hit start and let Odin let it finish!!
5th. Hold power button to turn off your S3, after it turns off about 10 seconds later it will turn back on to the battery charging screen so before that quickly hold Volume+ and Home, to boot into recovery
6th. now your in TWRP
7th. so to root your stock rom with TWRP flash the following file SuperSU.zip by Chain fire (pro tip. Install any other custom recovery the same way I did for TWRP above if it is in .tar format)
and here is Philz recovery for the D2Lte 6.48.4 ( which you must flash in TWRP)
and here is TWRP that was made specifically for the D2Rephersher/triband/L710T TWRP (which you must flash in a recovery)

Use the instructions to (use Odin to) update the recovery to TWRP first (in the second set of instructions). I had trouble trying to go right to PhilZ Recovery (which I believe is based off of ClockWorkMod). I Had to do the TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.0-d2spr.img.tar) first.
It was the only way to get it to actually accept the recovery, not sure why, maybe because the latest Samsung firmware fixed an exploit or two.
This is an older phone, but it is still a viable one.
I hope this helps someone out there.
It took me a while to figure this quandary out.
As always this WILL flag KNOX, but I'm sure this won't be an issue at this date and time (8/2016).

i want to say yes but towel root does come with a warning that it might brick your device.....but i want to say yes since most things that can be done to the ND8 can be done to the NDC and also in reverse order.....so try it and report back it will be good to know if it works on both bootloaders

Sprint S3 Android 4.4.2 ND8-It works!
I just used this method to root my Sprint S3 running Android 4.4.2 and ND8, since my USB port is on the fritz, and it worked successfully. I have root, and was able to do a full apps backup with Titanium Backup, and gained root access in ES File Explorer. Next, download and install a custom backup. Thanks, great job, and could not have been made easier to do!

Rooted the phone in one click. Unfortunately, I lost all data (no 3G or 4G connection). Did I goof? I'm looking in the stickies and can't seem to find an answer. I'd appreciate any help I can get.

Ya know. People keep talking about ND8 and ND___. I have no idea what that means. I know I should be embarrassed.
UPDATE: FIGURED IT OUT, BASEBAND VERSION. GOTCHA. IT IS NDC.
I was JUST coming back to update my post. I DID update the PRL and restarted my phone. That seems to have done the trick. Thank GOD I got my data connection back!! It worked. Even though I found the info somewhere else, thank you so much for the quick reply. PRL update fixes the problem. You're awesome.

I used it before i had a custom recovery. And on reboot i wouldnt have root. After i ran it root checker told me i was rooted then reboot killed. I installed philz and all was ok

many users of basically the same phone report different things with every root method out there. If it worked for you that's great tell other users what you did for it to work and if it didn't work, then ask for help and you will get help; some people don't have success with any method while others do with all of the methods.....my phone falls under every method.....

Straight forward, fast and easy. I did notice the following:
1) Updating binary reported it did not successfully install. I've seen this before on other devices, but everything worked well. Ext SD and Camera all OK. Everything works fine so far - Titanium, Nandroid, Root Browser, etc.
2) At one point, I was directed to install Busy Box. Having done this on other devices, I said "Yes" and installed it.
3) I see that my device now shows Device Status as Custom ( was Normal before, if I remember correctly). Is this due to Busy Box?
4) Is Device Status the only way to know the KNOX Status? I see no yellow triangle as I did on my Galaxy Reverb.
5) I got a Google warning to uninstall Towelroot since it is usafe and a security exploit. I understand that.
I would like to verify the KNOX status and if tripped in the Towelroot process, to let potential users know of that possibility.

Knox only notifies Samsung that your device isn't stock anymore not necessarily rooted like with a custom recovery and then flashed mods and what not but if you Odin the stock rom it resets the counters so Samsung will never know....and that i have noticed TowelRoot doesn't trip that counter.....only the recoveries and when you update the binary (<---completely forgot to fix that) you must hit the option normal not TWRP/CWM

That's great news because same boat here. It worked on 4.3 as well.
I had the phone hacked before and something must not be fully stock so the Ota fails.
I downloaded a package and mobile odin should flash it properly and then I can root it with this again and install a nice modified TouchWiz rom.

Thanks for your response. I may be over thinking these indicators. All I did was Towelroot, successfully. On the phone, the "About Device, Status" now says CUSTOM (was "Official"). The Knox counter according to app "Phone Info" shows Knox Counter at 0x0. As you said, since the counter is not tripped, should be no problem on warranty. So then Device Status CUSTOM is not a problem? I'm not really worried about warranty at this point, but I think I'll hold off further mods for another 6 moths.

Thanks. I tried the md8 and mk3 "mk3 is what it's on". Both just restart and get stuck on splash screen :/.
I have to go to download mode and and restart it that way to boot system back up.
Do you have any other suggestion. I'm not sure what part of the system is altered. It seems like a stock recovery and it's stock firmware "now rooted". Maybe the kernel.
I can't use USB at all.
I'm guessing maybe I should install twrp. Then install a stock zip or try out a 4.3 rom that way. I would like to get to md8 one way or another. Most md8 Roms want you to odin or flash an md8 base.

cause they need the ND8 base to work as intended...my suggestion would be to get the usb port on your phone fixed but i don't know how expensive that will be

Holy crap. May I say, I am quite impressed. I never planned on rooting my S3 (I like it that much!) but this just looked so damn easy to do and it was!
For the curious! I have a Virgin Mobile S3, and I'm on Kitkat 4.4.2, baseband NDC. Verified root with Root Checker Basic. No problems with mobile data.

Trying to root, have no idea what I'm doing.

Alright so I was rooted, but now there's been at least one new version of Android, so I need to do it again and update. I am confused as to how this whole thing works. I used to have an iPod touch which I jailbroke, and you could update the firmware simply by jailbreaking with a jailbroken version of the newer OS. Does Android work in a similar fashion with rooting, in which when you flash the ROM (am I saying this right?), it is a different Android version? So can I just find a ROM that's 4.3 to update, or should I update to 4.3 over the air and then root again? I actually already did the OTA update because it was really bothering me and currently I don't even use root features frequently. Anyway, the no-flash trip link in the how to root section says 4.1.1, which I assume means Android 4.1.1, and I don't want this. What can I do?
If I get a current version of a custom ROM, LiquidSmooth or something, will that update my Android version?
I'm sorry if I'm making zero sense right now, or if this is in entirely the wrong section. I'm trying my best here.

I will help U but you take full responsibility for anything that may happen to your device in the process.
It seems like U are still rooted, but but just on MK3 still. This will upgrade U to ND8
Here goes:
#1 Install Odin on your PC, run the program. (Link to Odin 3.07. LINK for ODINClick link and it will automatically download to system) Extract from ZIP
#2 Load the ND8 tar in the PDA Slot, put your phone in Download Mode (power off, hold Vol Down, Home, and Power), and connect your phone to the PC. (leave check in the Auto-Reboot and F-Reset)
#3 Then after that is successful run CF Auto Root LINK CF-AUTO ROOT This down load must be extracted and U will see Odin application in there too along with CF-Auto tar
#3b (I didn't do this because I don't really care, but if U want) get ROM Toolbox or something of that nature and remove any app with Knox in the title or that has the Knox symbol.
#4 Load your phone into Download Mode one last time and then put whatever recovery you have (I use Philz, make sure you grab the .tar format instead of the zip) and put that in the Bootloader slot in Odin. U will then be rooted and custom recovery.. U can stay there and set up phone or flash a custom ROM. I would do a nandroid back-up in philz first before U flash a new ROM though.

So can someone just clear up the whole version thing for me? I attempted to do the 4.4 OTA update that showed up, and it seems to have worked in the sense that the notification went away, but my version is the same (4.3) and I seem to still be rooted. I guess I really don't understand any of the rooting process. I know I've used Odin and stuff but I really don't know what any of it does. Is there already a thread somewhere that explains what all of this stuff actually does? I mean, updating and staying rooted can't be that hard to do.

[Solved] Need help with installing Cyanogenmod (Without a PC if possible)

Hi all, new to all of this. Please keep this in mind as you read this thread.
Well first of all I have been reading about Cyanogenmod and how it helps saves battery. I also wanted to use cputuner to overclock my phone a little. I have in the past rooted this phone and installed cputuner not knowing that it could damage your phone if you didn't have a custom kernel that supported overclocking. After I found that out I uninstalled it and unrooted in fear of damage to my phone. Anyways I have a few questions and was looking knowledge, resources, and help about a few things.
Questions:
Is installing a custom rom and things needed to install a custom rom possible with a PC?
Can I safely reroot my device since I unrooted through #SU?
What do I need to do besides reroot my device in order to install a custom rom? (Cyanogenmod)

My device is a Samsung Galaxy S3 I-747
Firmware 4.4.2 KitKat
Device was rooted before using towelroot but I unrooted using #SU.

Ok. To install cm with no computer use, I'd say the easiest way would be to get root again with towelroot. Then install flashify from the play store. use flashify to install a custom recovery. I prefer TWRP.
Next download cm rom and Gapps. Follow the installation instructions for the rom. Generally that's boot into recovery, wipe dalvik, cache, system, and data, flash rom, flash Gapps, then reboot. You can do this from the internal SD, it won't erase that when you wipe. However, an external SD can be really handy for getting out of a jam.
If you haven't done it, a little research on the forums here about backing up your efs might be in order before flashing roms. Hope you never need it, but it could make life easier someday.
Read, read, read the forum here. This was just a real brief overview. If you don't quite understand any part, it should at least help you with what to search to learn what you need to know.

Thanks friend will look into it a little more. So is there a major risk of getting bricked or are chances slim? Also do you have any links to the Cyanogenmod version I'm looking for? I would like it to be 4.4.2, not 5.X.X. And I also need the appropriate gapps file. If you don't know I still thank you for the info friend!

Chances of bricking should be slim as long as you follow the instructions closely.
CyanogenMod 11 is based on Android 4.4.X, Kitkat. Nightlies can be found here or here.
Snapshot releases, sometimes called monthlies, can be found here.

Thanks so much! Have been researching like crazy and odds seem pretty good. Problem is I've hit a ditch headfirst. I can't reboot using towering because I updated my kernel sometime through the period when my phone was unrooted (idk when or how this was done.) The date is apast june the 3rd and i read it won't work apast that date. Is there a workaround for this? I have no PC so I would like a non-PC method if possible. I just wanted to say I have tried all the modstrings for toweroot and still nothing.

The June 3rd date probably only counts if you took all of the OTA updates, okay rechecked your OP and I see that you are on NE4. I recall that either the NE4 or the NJ1 update patched the kernel to block TowelRoot. I take it when you say Firmware 4.4.2 KitKat you mean baseband, modem, and Samsung stock rom.
With SuperSu you can re-root using it, assuming you unrooted but did not remove the app. I don't know if the same applies to th SU app that comes with CWM. You could try. If you did go back to stock rom and properly formated you may no longer have su on your phone.

Thanks for the info, sadly I did uninstall #SU. Here is a ss of my modem info and such. I think it pretty much confirms I have the NJ1 version but I need you to confirm that.

I'm stuck.
You can install a custom recovery without having root, if you have a PC. You would use either Odin, Heimdall, or maybe adb.
You can install a custom recovery without a PC if you have root. You would use an app Like Flashify, Rom Manager, or Goo Manager (if it still exists).
You can flash a rom without a PC if you have a custom recovery, root is not needed.
Some roms, usually stock, can be flashed without a custom recovery if you have a PC.
I don't know the solution until you have access to a PC. I could see it being possible using a live USB with persistence of a Linux distribution, but you still have need for a PC. It's been a while since I created a live USB. The method I used required a small installation on the PC. so I don't see this as an immediate solution for you.

Oh sorry. I don't think towelroot works once you're on nj1, unless it has been updated.
If you get access to a PC, rooting is still fairly easy. You can use download mode and odin or heimdall to flash a custom recovery (be sure to uncheck reboot if using odin, or be really ready to pull battery). Don't let your phone reboot normally, you'll have to pull battery once odin is done.
Reboot to custom recovery, then flash supersu and you'll be rooted again, and set up to do whatever you want with your phone.

Thanks all for your help. I have decided I'm gonna give C-F Root a try as it seems very easy, then use Flashify to get CWM. Correct me if I'm wrong but there's no boot loader for my model type right? Couldn't seem to find anything on the subject except the Verizon variant. I'm gonna still need help deciding which gapps to flash as I'm gonna flash the latest Cyanogenmod monthly build. Is there anything else to be aware of when using a new Rom?

excuse for butting in .... but if you dont know your bootloader/modem info. here is an app called 'samsung info' that should tell you.
your question "...... but theres no bootloader for my phone model right?" kinda worried me. its important to know because they should match AND trying to downgrade can brick your device. on the plus side ; i've never seen a custom ROM include bootloader/modem in it.

As mrrocketdog stated, the Samsung Info app will tell you your bootloader and modem. If what you previously stated is correct, they should both be NJ1. You can get the same info by issuing these commands in a terminal emulator on the phone:

Appreciate the butting in! You may have just saved me from bricking my phone lol. Maybe I need to do a lot more research because that just lost me. So how do I tell that my phone is equipped with a boot loader? And if it is how do I disable it? I read that in order to flash a new Rom the boot loader must be disabled. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I'm no where near the point of flashing a new Rom (Cyanogenmod) but this is a great furniture reference to me.

every phone has a bootloader , two if i'm not mistaken. the one you're concerned with comes already unlocked on the good 'ol S3. (i bricked my first s3 trying to 'unlock' the bootloader). just find out bootloader/modem version (see posts above) to make sure they match (to avoid issues later) and just dont ever try to downgrade.

You have lifted a burden off my shoulders friend! Ever since I wanted to flash a custom Rom I've been worried if my phones bootloader was locked! I can now be at ease now that I know its unlocked. Will check upon that info about bootloader/modem.

Is there a reason you can't use a PC to install a ROM?
I'm asking because I also do not know of a way to install a ROM without having root.
If you are able to root, you could try using the CM installer again.

Those are the latest versions of the bootloader and modem. You will be good for CM 12 or CM 11, and other custom ROMs based on CM. Older versions will work with them, but you probably need to edit the updater-script. (The older versions are not likely to include the NJ1 versions in the checks as they were not out when the ROMs were last updated.) NJ1 will also work with any of the ROMs based on the KitKat TouchWiz releases by Samsung.
As soon as you can find a PC to borrow you should be in business. Any chance of using one at a public library?

Appreciate all the help you gave me too friend, providing the links to cm and gapps, gonna borrow my friends laptop Sunday and try to root flash C-F Root through Odin. Thats the part that scares me but I should be good as people has confirmed it works for NJ1. Wish me luck friend. Would you recommend installing CM12? I personally like kit Kat and I know CM11 is based on that but is CM12 better? I guess its based on Lollipop
