Hey guys, I'm brand new to xda and I recently rooted my phone. I'm considering flashing the AOKP ROM, and I've got two questions at the moment.
1.) I see that it is very strongly suggested to do a nandroid backup of your current rom, and download a "custom recovery" app. I created a backup using the "Rom Manager" app by clockworkmod. My question is, is the Rom Manager considered a custom recovery, or is that something I need to download in addition? The backup I created is already on my phone, and a copy of it is on a spare micro sd card.
2.) Now that I'm rooted, should I still install the software updates from T-mobile? Or is that unnecessary?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
Btw I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S III
1. If u use rom manager to flash CWR then that is it. U can check it by click on recovery in rom manger
2. No u dont have to updated anything unless the Op stated.
3. I would suggest you to back up yoir imei. Just in case u lose it during flash. Most ppl recommed using Twrp instead of CWR . Becuse ppl report of losing imei usinh cwr. But am not sure. Hope that help

ROM Manager is used to flash a custom recovery. Hit the "download Clockworkmod" button in the Rom Manager app. That's your custom recovery.
Now that you have a custom recovery, updates from T-Mobile will NOT install. You don't need them anyways.

This.
Ignore what the other guy said.
Once you boot into your recovery with some key combo (I don't know what it is for your device) you go into 'backup and restore' I believe its called in clockworkmod and perform a nandroid.

Twrp (team win recovery project) is just another recovery, it takes the place of clockworkmod (CWM/CWR)
Not an app at all... however you can get it through goo manager

Mike, the link I provided was to back up your IMEI and nothing else. It is totally independent of backing up your ROM.

I would definitely back up your IMEI just in case. There have been a lot of users that have randomly lost it and they lost data connection because of it. If you have a back up of your IMEI you can easily restore it and get your data back.
Hi,
I'm experiencing some issues with cwm recovery. When I try to do anything in rom manager it says that I must have cwm recovery installed but when I try to flash cwm recovery via rom manager my phone isn't listed (sg3 att) I have the latest version straight from Google play.
I would greatly appreciate some assistance with this very annoying problem.
Thnk you!
Steve.

Get twrp does the same exact thing but a better ui and everything!!! Install goo manager and just choose a random rom to flash (you dont really have to flash the rom) its just so it prompts you to ask if you have a custom recovery say no and it will install twrp! Trust me on this one TWRP is one flawless custom recovery and always seems to work with me
Hey thanks for that reply. Just a couple of questions. I went ahead and installed twrp recovery and you're right its very easy to use. I tried flashing cm10 stable (at&t) on Rogers sg3 and I keep getting error 7. I factory reset the phone just like I would have with cwm.
Also, while in twrp when I select browse all compatible rims nothing comes up.
Any ideas?
Thanks again.

Wierd. CM10 always says Cwm is the only one that works to flash its rom .. but its wierd cuz i flashed cm10 perfectly with twrp many times before
Heres a thread to fix your error 7 though.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1932975
Did you install ROM Manager from the market (Play Store)? EDIT: Just re-read your OP stating that you did a fresh install. At any rate, it should work fine, there is an option to select the AT&T version of the S3 (see attached screen shot).
TWRP is good too, I'm just more accustomed to cwm so I tend to stick with it.

I had the same issue as you. I'm on a Rogers GS3 and the S3 ATT wasn't showing up in the Rom Manager menu.
I installed CWM using this toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
I then had to update CWM to a more current version using these instructions: http://andr0idtech.blogspot.ca/2012/09/how-to-install-latest-clockworkmod.html
Once I updated CWM I was able to flash CM10 with no problems.

That is weird!
The "S3 (AT&T)" shows up in your screenshot but it is nowhere in sight on my copy of CWM... (Bell S3)
I am running ROM Manager Premium v5.0.2.4 (current version, no?) and yet, the phone model list skips from the "Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G", to the "Samsung Galaxy S3 (MetroPCS)" and then on to the "Samsung Skyrocket"...
Could this be a regional lock sort of thing? or maybe CWM differentiates between the i747 and the i747m ? Either way, it is NOT showing up in the list...
Any thoughts??

Sorry, I should have been more clear. When "pushing" the recovery image to the phone you open terminal and do dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img(whatever the filename is of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 using root.
See my post above about the IMEI backup.
Rom manager is not good for flashing ROMs. I used it to get recovery updated ( from free version ) and flash rom manually.

Hey there, I am totally new to flashing ROMs and have been exclusively using ROM Manager to flash several new ROMs as I try them out to see what I like.
My experience has been very good. I did have a problem trying to flash LiquidSmooth ROM onto my TMO, ended up having to Odin back to stock and then reroot...but I chalked that up to my own stupidity at having not flashed the Gapps, and thereby locking myself out of Google Play Store and other needed stuff.
Whatever you do, just make sure you backup. I even have made and then flashed backups from ROM Manager...so my experience has been good.
Good luck whatever you decide to do
I've been using Rom Manager (across several phones) since it came out, and never had a problem with it. I personally prefer CWM Touch over TWRP, maybe just since I've been using CWM for so long. As far as GooManager.... that thing annoys me to no end. If you're worried about the app causing problems though, I would just download the updates then reboot into recovery and flash from there.

Exactly what I do. Only flash the recovery through rom manager but reboot into recovery yourself if your flashing a rom. If the developer says to wipe, well please do yourself a favor and wipe. Titanium backup will make your life simple as well.

As you can see you can see some conflicting information... all shots were taken in sequence. I'm thinking the fail in twrp is coming from the system not having root but the info is telling me otherwise....

Do you have the latest SuperSU version?
I'm a little lost at what you are saying.
You flashed a rom, and it said fail, and you think it has to do with Root?
If you have TWRP installed it doesn't matter if you are rooted or not. It's going to over right the system partition regardless if you have root or not.
So it's either a bad download or bad transfer for it to fail.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 4
I do have the latest SU version by chain fire. And maybe I'm doing something wrong the because I am running the virgin gpe ROM now and that flashed in twrp with no issues. Now when I go to install (after wiping) and select the 9.12 update that I downloaded it hangs on trying to open the zip and fails... I haven't changed any twrp settings but in the write options of twrp what boxes should be checked because system is not by default... Thanks for the replies!

If all else fails, just start from scratch, get stock UVUAMDL tar, flash it with Odin, make sure to do a factory wipe after you flash it, sometimes bootloops occur if you don't. You don't even have to go past the first screen where you pick the language. Just shut it down from there and boot into download mode and root with Chainfire with Odin, then shut down and boot up again into download mode again and flash custom recovery tar of ur choice with Odin. Then download whatever custom rom zip and install it via custom recovery.

heyyy saw your reply in my thread.
just as @byron1985 suggested there, it sounds like you got a bad download. the flashing scripts are essentially exactly the same from previous version. the flashing process has absolutely zero to do with SuperSU.
edit: re-read. so you've verified the download. if you had success with CWM previously, i would go back to that. i do not use TWRP.
