if I then hit the power button to select the bootloader it goes away and if I go to recovery and hit the power buttone the PC sees the phone as "one" with no driver

Reboot your PC with the Advanced Boot Menu, and load Windows 8 with driver signing verification disabled. Then connect your phone 3 times, once in recovery, fastboot, and in the OS. The drivers will load correctly, and you can then reboot into normal Windows 8 and it will work fine.
Where is the advance boot menu?

Ok I tried this. No joy. The pc still says it cannot find a driver. Yes HTC sync and HTC manager are installed
Remove htc sync and manager, and then use these drivers http://vzw1files.dyndns.org/ADB/ADB_Drivers.zip You will have to manually install them thru device manager.
still says the htc driver is the best one device shows up as Android 1.0

This bother me a lot!
I've tried to install UnrEVOked on my Desire, but I can't install these lame drivers!
They keep on failing, either they tell me, that my drivers can't be updated to any better. Or that my install of the drivers were unsucessful.
Do any of you know what to do?
Windows XP, SP3.
I do have HTC Sync, I've tried several times, restartet my computer.
Any help would be appreciated.

You if have HTC sync installed on your computer, you need to uninstall this, doing this leaves the correct drivers.
Swyped from HTC desire
Follow this steps it should make you ready to go. Also check if you have PVT-4(boot into Hboot (from off, hold volume down and press power)), and if you have it then download Terminal emulator from the market and open it.
Type "cat /proc/mtd" and press enter. It will return results of either 20,000 or 40,000.
If you get 20,000 you must select AmonRa (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20471345/SUroot/Tools/Android/Recovery/recovery-RA_2.0.1.img) as custom recovery from UnrEVOked: File->CustomRecovery (or Ctrl+R) and select the img you just downloaded.
If you have 40,000 you don't need the modify anything, unless you want AmonRa instead of CWM.
Install HTC Sync
Remove HTC sync (application only) via Control panel (add remove programs / programs and features) - This should leave the drivers behind, which we need to keep.
Install the Hboot drivers (http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/lib/e...revoked.com/recovery/android-usb-driver.zip):
Extract your hboot driver files somewhere you will remember.
Boot into Hboot screen (from off, hold volume down and press power)
Connect Desire to PC (the screen will then show "HBOOT USB")
Right click "My computer" > Manage > Device Manager
Expand "Other Devices" in the right-hand pain and locate "Android 1.0 device"
Right click on Android 1.0 and click Update Driver Software
Click on Browse my computer for driver software.
Click on Browse and select the Android USB Driver folder you extracted earlier (press OK to any errors received and Close when complete)
Check Android Bootloader Interface is listed under Android Phone in device manager.
Credits for these steps goes to SUroot.
If you have 40,000 you don't need the modify anything, unless you want AmonRa instead of CWM.
If you have erase size 40000 you need to use amonra 2.01.
To install them, you must be in the bootlader (HBOOT).

Welcome to moonshine s-off for the HTC One VX -- Developed by beaups, Fuses and hyuh. Enjoy.
Supported firmwares:
2.21.502.1
Important windows notes:
1) make sure htc sync is uninstalled
2) make sure adb and fastboot drivers are working
3) make sure htc sync is uninstalled
4) if you are having problems with fastboot, try a usb 2.0 port.
5) make sure htc sync is uninstalled
6) make sure other programs that interfere with adb and fastboot are uninstalled (PDANet, Kies, etc.)
7) make sure htc sync is uninstalled
8) if you use a third party firewall, be sure to grant access to distiller.exe as it checks for updates
9) MAKE SURE HTC SYNC IS UNINSTALLED
10) YOU MUST UNZIP THE ARCHIVE BEFORE RUNNING DISTILLER. DO NOT JUST TRY TO RUN IT FROM THE ARCHIVE.
Downloads available at: http://moonshine.io
Two things to note.
1. This is specifically for JB firmware. So if you have flashed RUU or my firmware package and you are S-ON this is the only option available to you. If you are on ICS still use Facepalm S-OFF.
2. No need to run this at all unless you are S-ON. No need to do it after firmware upgrade as you keep S-OFF.
Copuld anybody share your ADB and fastboot drivers? I can't find anything on google for this damn phone. >_<

Yeah, no. It doesn't work. Neither that nor letting windows update look for the files nor letting the PC scan for files.
Try using Linux. For example an Ubuntu live CD. ADB and Fastboot are installed by default in most newer versions of Ubuntu.

So after flashing CM11 I can no longer transfer files to my HTC One X, I tried uninstalling all the old one and installing the latest HTC Sync Manager but when I connect my phone now it opens sync manager but then proceeds to say that no phone is connected. Neither can I find the device in windows explorer.
What now since the PC recognizes the device in Device Manager but wont let me manage it.

I have windows 8.1 and my pc does not recognize my m8. It is connected and charging though, and I am using a USB 2.0 port. USB debugging on. On the device managers, no device shows up. I uninstall all HTC Drivers aswell. Any help? I just need it to have a yellow explanation mark device on device managers, and I know what to do from there.
I tried download HTC drivers but the htcdriver.exe won't bring up an installation window. I'm running out of time as I need to return to stock quickly before Wednesday.

Try this solution.
[Q] Device not recognized by Windows 8.1
Have you tried different cables and usb ports? A different pc as a last resort?
Make sure you have no other phone drivers installed (Samsung, etc.) and make sure all HTC drivers are uninstalled. Make sure you don't accept the option to automatically install HTC Sync when you connect the phone. After that, you should get the yellow exclamation point in Device Manager. Select the option to manually select the drivers, and pick the generic Android MTP device (or some similar description).
After installing CM11, my computer doesn't recognise my One X. I also installed adb and fastboot again with the complete program but I doubt that affected it. how can I fix this as I need to put a rom on ym sd card! thanks!
Update : tried to install fresh drivers via htc sync but it said driver installer failed to install when installing htc sync. I uninstalled the previous adb and htc drivers and it still did not work. ARGH!

still says 'windows was unable to install your Android Phone' and that windowsd could not find the driver software. I set the location to each of the subfolders and the main folder itself of the drivers and still did not work
arghhhhh!!!!!!!!
It is no longer recognised as a HTC as it used to be too.
(what you said about developer options worked, but my main concern is fastboot now because I need to flash a boot.img asap! )
