I have a VM gs2 and I was wondering how do I get a custom recovery without connecting to a pc (I'm already rooted) and also where can I find a guide to flash CM11 on my device? Or any other roms in general.

As for the recovery...you can find a kernel that is compatible with the ROM you are currently running. Get the tar version of the kernel. Now use mobile Odin to flash the kernel...as for the rest. I suggest reading up..before you try flashing any ROM. If you need a little guide on mobile Odin though. I made one I can link you too.

I've got a nice little step-by-step guide here.
Easily root and flash CM11 Kitkat without a PC.
I know it says Sprint only, however it should work with all carriers.

I'm rooted with a custom recovery running M919UVUAMDB.
So if i get it right. Only way to upgrade is to
Odin to stock.
Upgrade and break root.
Root with upgrade.
Re Flash upgraded stock.
Pretty much. Or you can use Skies to do recovery to the lastest firmware, then root again.

Been searching for last hour or two and this is only thread I've found this specific topic. Just got S4 today coming from a GNex so somethings are new to me.
Is there a detailed instructions somewhere on how to do this?
I'm also rooted on M919UVUAMDB and trying to figure out the best way to upgrade to MDL so that I can re-root again.
Install Kies. Under Tools setting, select recovery and put your phone to download mode. Let Kies do the rest.

Thanks for clarifying. Just to double check, would cwm recovery affect the kies firmware recovery process?
No. Kies would wipe it off during recovery process and install the latest firmware.

lol I've searched around too, but made my own conclusions. ahha
Not attempting to promote any particular roms but Wicked v2 is running mdl update with the mdb modem and radio and smoother than silk on s4, Revolt requires manualy updating with setuidremoval but has a great writeup how to do so as does Infamous S4, I personally can confirm Revolt and Wicked are working flawless as long as the minimal theming currently in both is fine with you.

Hey guys
I have spent the last couple of days looking for a way to make this work. I am running paranoid android 3.97 and can't find a 4.1.1 ROM to flash using cwm from my phone to use the free unlock method. Without a computer I am restricted to custom Roms. How should I go about getting my device unlocked?

I'm looking for a free method. All the links I can find to custom 4.1.1 Roms are dead. Anybody have a working one?
Downgrade for device unlock can be performed using just the modem...
Then once the unlock is complete you can replace the older modem with the latest and your unlock will remain. ..
Check the "everything" thread in the development section for modems in .zip form...g

...but im really confused by it all.
Im not new to rooting or flashing roms etc but im confused with all the different builds and my efs folder and what not.
I came from having a moto atrix and a htc desire before that.
My phone is currently on stock XXDME6 with baseband DMF1 and im in the UK.
Can someone point me in the right direction to be able to root, install TWRP recovery and flash miui v5 please?
Any help would be much appreciated.

For TWRP: HERE
MIUI thread: HERE
Once TWRP installed make sure to make a Nandroid Backup and check EFS partition.
Then you will be able to flash MIUI safely.
The easiest way to root is chainfires autoroot but that won't give you custom recovery you will have to flash separately. Dr ketan has published a gude that is stickied, you can't go wrong if you follow that and dr ketan is always helpful and friendly if your confused

Thanks for the replies.
If i root using CF auto root, how do i flash the twrp recovery?
Is it only roms built using a stock base that i have to worry about the build number then?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
You can flash any build number I think the issue is with the latest modem which once flashed can't be downgraded . There are a few threads on it. If you want to use auto root you can use something like rom toolbox pro or I used mobile odin to flash a custom recovery. Personally I recommend phils touch recovery. I think he has an all in one root and custom recovery package that you just flash with odin

If I remember correctly you can downgrade to an earlier rom as long as you reflash your modem

There are no root methods I know of that automagically install CWM or any other custom recovery. If all you do is root, all you'll have is root.
Also, in the future, if you post a topic in the Q&A forum and either don't get a response or don't get the response you want, you should refrain from reposting it in another forum.

This one does not involve flashing any custom recovery prior to rooting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611971
Some developers have also released some pre-rooted roms which do not need to modify the stock recovery..
You may spend some time searching for different methods.

Use the CWM method and after the phone is rooted, you can install back the stock recovery.
Attached. Unzip and flash in Odin as PDA/AP.
I just got a Rogers note 2. I'm a little lost on how to install a custom rom/recovery on this device. I only have experience with the nexus 4 and htc one x,s and evo 3D. So i know the basic adb commands and such and have fastboot set up. Basically as an end result I want a custom rom, kernel and a working recovery. I was also wondering if a custom rom such as cm10 supports the s-pen? and can I flash a at&t rom on my Canadian phone?
Info:
Model: SGH-I317M
Android: 4.3
Baseband: I317MVLUCMK5

S Pen: you can get some spen feature with AOSP roms but most of em will not be like a touchwiz rom.
Yes you can use att rom on your note but you might need to manually input your APN. This is no big deal.

You can do it both way. If you have a costum recovery installed you can flash the zip file provided in the thread. If not you can flash it with Odin.

You first need to root, I think there are two ways of doing it, I usually do it with odin and cf-autoroot. I'm not familiar with other ways.
Then you can install recovery trough odin OR using goo manager from playstore and press menu, install open recovey script
Once you have done all this, you will be ready to install a new rom.
Take a look at the cf-autoroot thread and the twrp thread in the development section.
Read a lot before attempting stuff, you need to prepare yourself and understabd how it works or your risk ending up with an expensive paperweight.

OK sounds good. I just thought some firmware you couldn't root. Am I good to install kernels like that too? Most phones I have owned need an unlocked boot loader to flash kernels. Are Samsung phone pre unlocked.
