[Q] Wifi problems after modem update - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

During a recent update, I noticed that I've never updated my modem on my GS3. So I went on over to this thread and grabbed I747UCUEMJB to install it.
After installing it, though, I can't connect to 802.11n at home on 2.4 GHz. I can connect to the 5 GHz antenna just fine, but not the 2.4 GHz one (It's a single, dual-network router/AP). At work, I can connect to 2.4 GHz just fine (I don't know what flavor of 802.11 they're using here).
What happens is, I'll tap the network I want to connect to, enter my key, and then it just says "Saved and secured" or whatever the message is when it has saved the network, but it isn't connected to it. If I tap on my 5 GHZ network, it connects just fine. But tap on my 2.4 and it never connects (and never gives me an error, either).
The reason I want to use the 2.4 GHz network is that, for whatever reason, I get better signal from it, especially in the basement of my house.
So, can I just flash a different modem? Maybe try the next-most-recent one (I747UCDMG2)? I ask because I thought I remembered seeing some thread talking about downgrading from I747UCUEMJB that warned that you could brick your device by doing that...

You can flash an older modem but not an older bootloader.

Won't connect to Cisco E4200 router with N only G!

Hi,
Just received my Galaxy Nexus earlier today and have been battling to have it attempt a connection to my WiFi router at home, it'll have a go at the neighbours routers but just says 'saved' on mine and never connects or fails regardless of password given or settings used.
Well - I just found the issue, if I set the E4200 to 'G' mode the phone connects perfectly, but it WILL NOT connect to the router set to 'N' speeds on 2.4 or 5GHz using 20 or 40 MHz channel width.
Anyone found there are potential issues with this phone and 'N' routers? I should mention I've tried 3 different kernels (stock, modaco and franco) and 3 different ROM's (4.0.1 stock, 4.0.2 Revolution HD and 4.0.3 build in the dev section) and all exhibit the same issue. Have not changed baseband as I'm using a 'T' model and want to keep my I9250TDVKK6 modem - this is probably where the problem is anyway.
Anyone else having similar or found a workaround or solution? Thanks!
Hi,
have you tried settings the MHZ band on auto or anything besides just 20mhz band? not many devices like this channel, I'm not having any trouble on the Aerohive system at work or other Netgear at home.
Thanks for the thought! 20 is standard but I've tried every setting - it will connect on 2.4GHz using 'G' fixed speed/protocol or 5GHz only using 'A', neither works at all on 'N' on any channel, width or security
It is bizarre, it's like the phone decides it won't try and says "saved" on the profile once the password is put in when its on "N" there is no connecting, authenticating or getting an IP feedback at all, it does nothing really. If I choose another working AP after trying an "N" one the "N" one says 'disabled'.
My SGS2 worked flawlessly and without complaint previously on any "N" or otherwise setting.
I have the same model router, and it is working for me. I have both the 2.4 and 5 ghz set to mixed network mode. Channel width set to auto, and security/encryption matching on both frequencies. On the Nexus, I have the 5 ghz specified in Wifi settings.

I have this model and connect via the 5ghz connection with no problems.
Same with E3000 with DD-WRT and Virginmedia Superhub
I've been suffering with this problem for a while now. I bought mine on the 19th Nov and tried it out in pure 5 Ghz mode almost straight away and was very impressed with the throughput from my 50Mb Virginmedia cable connection (40+Mb/s with Speedtest.net app).
All was well until I suddenly couldn't connect. It said the SSID was saved and the signal was excellent but tapping "connect" did nothing. I presumed my phone was acting a little screwy so did a had reset (stock unrooted 4.01F YAKU) and tried again but still suffered the same problem.
I started to suspect it could be a channel issue as the GN only supports a handful of 5Ghz channels, so set them accordingly in DD-WRT on my E3000...same result.
To rule out the router, I activated the 5Ghz wireless on my Virginmedia Superhub and what do you think happened?? Exactly the same as before. Everytime I tapped connect, there was no evidence of and attempt to connect to the network. I then tried the 5Ghz SSID on the E3000 and got the same result with the Superhub one dropping back to "disabled" as the OP noticed.
I'm trying to recall if the problem occured before or after the volume fix OTA but I can't really remember to be honest. I'm sterting to think that the handset is faulty as only a couple of people seem to be suffering with this issue...
---------- Post added at 09:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 PM ----------
I Googled the issue again and discovered a post on Androids bug posting forum which seems to indicate it's a hardware fault:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23296
I think a trip back to Phones4U is in order for an exchange.
It's happened again!!
I have the same problem with the replacement handset as before. I had just been using 5Ghz, disconnected and when I tried to reconnect, it just sat there as if I hadn't selected "Connect". I've been looking around on various forums and I'm inclined to think that they just die after a while as there arer many other posts similar to this with lots of people trying saying the same as I (and the OP did). Mine has been fine for over 2 months and suddenly has ceased to work...Looks like a warranty replacement this time as P4U were kind enough to replace the handset in-store even though I was out of the 30 day exchange period as I had shown them this forum post indicating it was a known problem that other users were suffering...Technology always fails me in the end
..
Wi-Fi on the GN is horribly broken—you just need to accept it until the Android developers get their heads out their *sses and fix it. Using our Cisco enterprise-class access points, the GN cannot connect at 5GHz—though every other Wi-Fi device that supports 5GHz can. That said though, the GN CAN do 11n over 2.4GHz. Go into Settings, Wireless and Networks, Wi-Fi and tap on your SSID. This should show you your link speed and 72Mbps is as good as you’re going to get with a 20MHz channel and the GN hardware—mine shows 65Mbps and this is an 11n speed, albeit a slower one. From the configuration of our enterprise-class access points, 11g covers “6.0, 9.0, 12.0, 18.0, 24.0, 36.0, 48.0 and 54.0”—whereas 11n covers “m0-m15” (MCS index). The GN only supports m0-m7 and, currently, my GN is connecting at m6.
Hope this helps! At least a little.

Anyone else getting this stupid WiFi bug?

It's on LG8, it doesn't happen to my home wifi, but ANY other WiFi, I have to do this process.
Slide down Notification bar, Toggle WiFi, hit settings, select WiFi to connect (always an open one that needs to be authenticated via website.), says connected, but instantly disconnects and I lose data for ~3-5 seconds and it disconnects the WiFi. Then I have to go back into WiFi and reconnect. The WiFi is just disconnected from always says "saved".
It happens on any LG8 rom I am on, including the 15 toggle mod roms. Not sure if it's my device or what.

I have the problem too. Stock or Blazer or Team Sonic. Happened on 2 phones so it doesn't seem HW related.
*#0011# then menu and wifi and turn off power save. Have to do this every time phone reboots but solves the problem.

What frequency is your WiFi access point or router using? There is a known bug introduced by the LG8 that borked your ability to select which frequency band to use or a hybrid setting, so the phone is stuck in whichever was selected before the LG8 update. So if your phone had been set for the 5 GHz band, then you applied the update, you could no longer connect to 2.4 GHz access points.
Interesting...have not tested but will look at this.
What a silly oversight on sumsungs part.

My router at home that doesn't have this issue is 2.4ghz. I'd assume the same at these WiFi hotspot points since some laptops still only support G freqs.

Hmm. I don't know what to make of that. I actually have never experienced this problem myself, and never changed my frequency setting under the old firmware. Can't even find a link right now to whatever forum post reported this problem in the first place.
I'm on LG8 stock and don't have wifi issues...weird

I have a dual band router and I know that mine will connect to either 2.4G or 5G, although it's usually on 2.4.

The way I understood the alleged bug, the problem only occurs if the user had changed the setting under the old firmware that included the Settings screen to do that. Then the Settings screen went away with the new firmware build.

[Q] Strange WiFi connection issue

This is a strange issue that I have not seen before. I was starting to have issues with my phone connecting to the wifi at the house. I decided to flash a clean rom today and hopefully that would fix the issue. I did a clean install and now my phone will only connect to the 5G band and not the 2.4GHz wifi band. I would like to connect to the 2.4ghz band but I get a message saying authentication error. I removed the connection and connected using the wps push button but when i do this it only sees the 5G. Any ideas what is going on and how I can correct it?
Do you see the same issue on the stock build ??
You are running what rom ??
Try the rooted stock build as a test. ..and if no change. ..reset the router and set up the connection on the device again. ..g
Have you tried turning off the power saver?
I suspect your router as the culprit but you can try going into the advance menu.
Hit *#0011#* hit menu then wifi menu.
I think you may even be able to choose the band? I think you can choose auto or manually pick 2.4 or 5ghz. Either way see if shutting off the power saver helps.

That is strange usally its the other way around...I have my dual band set up similar to yours..I named the 2.4 actually 2.4 and 5.0 same password..sometimes ill have to hit scan to show the 5ghz band...sounds stuiped..but make sure you click show password and make sure your entering rhe correct one..it may be so simple you may entered wrong password...or try changing the channel on the 2.4 ghz in rhe router setring to a different channel..mybe be a conflict..change it to channel 11..and reboot the router. ..
I have tried it on a stock rooted rom as well as CleanRom 3. Does the same. I have not tried a CM based rom to see if it only does it with the TW based rom's. I have checked the router and I don't see anything there that should cause the problem. I have 4 other android phones, and android tablet, and 1 iphone in the household and none of the others are having this issue. I have also noticed that it doesn't always say authentication error. Sometimes it says out of range even though I can be standing right beside the router. I am stumped.

Did you ever solve this? I'm having similar problem with my Note 2. I have a strong wifi signal incoming to the phone, but the transmission signal is very weak (verified using dd-wrt on the router and looking at client signal strength). My Note 2 has extremely poor strength.. ~10% where every other device on my network is ~50%. I've tried factory reset, turning off wifi power save mode.. not sure what else to try.
I am having a similar problem for the past couple months. My Note2 (ATT) with custom ROM won't connect to a 2.4 GHz wifi. No problem connecting to 5GHz wifi.
I saw an answer to this for a Sony Experia that the problem is with 802.11 mode and to change a file option gDotMode from 3 to either 1 or 2, but I haven't found a file with that option in it yet.
Same problem here, no 2.4 authentication unless the phone is very close to 2.4GHz AP.

I have noticed that in some public networks i can connect with no trouble, (I guess now that they're 5.8GHz)
but not at home
Any solution? I am using a note 2 i317m with stock rom 4.3 from TELCEL mexico carrier

[FIX] Wifi connection drops

I just discovered this with a little research with people having similar wifi problems. Simply change your router settings to 2.4 ghz band instead of 5 ghz band. For some reason the G4 is having problems with 5 ghz bands.
Or if you cant do that, just connect your phone to the 2.4 ghz band of your wifi if your router is dual broadcasting.

I'm trying it, not sure if it'll work. I've had 2.4 and 5 networks saved, i've just deleted the 5 network, we'll see if it's better.
Adding this line to my build.prop seems to have fixed this issue for me. I'm still testing but my phone isn't having any issues on the 5Ghz AC band.
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=180

Didn't work for me
not connecting to 5Ghz is NOT a fix at all..
i didn't tried the scan intervall, i'll test it.
but i can confirm that either the reception is low and that the phone love to loose the signal :/
It also sometimes says that it has bad internet conneciton, so it refuse to connect (didn't found the setting to disable this stupidity... I know that on stock android under wifi settings you can disable this behaviour)
Sometimes it is also refusing to connect to a wifi... it just say registering and stoped...
only way to force it : reboot the phone...
hope that a software update will fix these issues.

Slow Wi-Fi after WW_2.20.40.97_20150917 update?

I did a search and didn't find anything. I've been updating my ZE551ML and keeping it completely stock. I am on the latest update (WW_2.20.40.97_20150917) and did a Factory Reset for a clean start. I realized after setting up my Wi-Fi again that speeds are extremely slow; <20 Mbps. This is on both the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, and even if I put it in the Performance Battery mode.
Is anyone else seeing similar and if so, did it start with this update or something earlier?
Is it because of the location? For me, Wi-Fi working normally (at least didn't affect my daily use) except for in my room which is not very far from the router. I get 3 to 4 bars wifi, but it will stop working for sometime and speed is very slow I can't even watch a video without being interrupted. If I walk out of my room, speed is back normal. It's like my room is protected against wifi
Sent from my ASUS_Z00A using Tapatalk
It is definitely something up with my ZF2. I have plenty of other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network that get appropriate speeds. I'm pretty sure it also got great Wi-Fi speeds when I first got it, but this is the first time I re-checked the speeds after all of the various software updates since release, plus a Factory Reset.
FYI, after some additional testing as well as downgrading the firmware, this seems to be some sort of weird interaction between my router/access point and the ZF2.
I'm currently using the T-Mobile CellSpot (basically a ASUS RT-AC68 with T-Mobile custom firmware) in Access Point mode, and what I've been able to determine is that the ZF2 seems to be speed-limited when connected to the "normal" SSIDs (I have separate ones for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). I have configured guest SSIDs (which have Internet access but not local LAN access) and when connected to those the speeds are as expected.
Really doesn't make much sense to me since it is the same wireless radio on the router. But at least I can reproduce it definitely at this point.
Some time lag )

My ZE551 ML is also facing some issues after the final update WW_2.20.40.97_20150917. Cellular data is not working. All the buttons are working and on but arrows are not displayed and no data transfer and status says Cellular network status-Disconnected.
poor clarity in voice calls to the receiver and slow system respond with even phone book app.
Expecting a kind support ....
