I have an HTC One from the Verizon network (updated today to 4.2.2) and have been scouring Google and the rest of the internet for a way to root it. I mostly just come up with guides for other HTC One models or old tutorials that no longer work. here is what i have tried:
* I tried the HTCDEV website to try and unlock it, but constantly got error 160: MID Not Allowed.
* So, I tried making the CID 1111111, but that spat out error "INFO[JAVACARD_ERR] SD/USBDISK Init error"
* I have tried using rumrunner, but it spat out that i needed root (needing root to get root, makes sense)
* I also tried using firewater (the temproot method) but that just gave me error:
"error in setsockopt().
Failed to get prepare_kernel_cred address.
Failed to get commit_creds address.
Failed to get ptmx_fops address.
Failed to setup variables."
Is there any proven way to do it? I'm at the end of my rope.

Do you mean you upgraded to 4.4.2? If so, you're SOL for now. You don't need root with rumrunner, but it's for 4.2. Firewater is for 4.3.

No, unfortunately the only way to do that is if you're s-off. Beaups has done a great job and giving us the ability to achieve s-off so I'm sure he's probably working on a method already.

Correction:
I just received a replacement for a damaged HTC One. It was running 4.2.2. I can confirm that firewater does work on 4.2.2 (and is quite a bit faster and smoother than rumrunner was).

Can you update me when the new S-off tool comes out?
Unless you know a person with a java card then you might have awhile to wait. It took. Awhile for us to get rumrunner and before that you had to send your phone off to a guy with a java card to achieve s off. If you desperate enough might see if that guy still has his java card. He charged 20 bucks to unlock the phone.

vzw1files DOT dyndns DOT org go here and download the stock ruu for Android 4.2 and flash it through fastboot oem rebootRUU. This will effectively downgrade you to hboot 1.44 so you can use rumrummer to achieve s-off and unlock the bootloader. Then you run the OTA to get all the new firmware and hboot 1.56, THEN flash custom recovery if you decide to use other roms. Good luck

Possibly similar problem
I may have a similar problem, and for the sake of putting this all in one spot I'm going to respond here. If this would be better suited as a new thread let me know and I'll do that instead.
I have a Verizon HTC One that I had run RumRunner on to "root" it, but rumrunner got interrupted. When attempting to run the program again I get the error: 'you have stupid issues. you suck.. run rumrunner again'. I was told this error points to "non factory kernel/system". I am interested in reversing whatever happened during what I imagine to be the original failed rumrunner attempt.
Let me know what specific information you would need to help. And again, if I should just make my own thread let me know.

Was your phone 10000% stock before you ran it? Did you download the correct rumrunner for your phone aka, .2, .8, .10? Mabye try to run it again after a factory reset.

From what I gather the problem was the the partially run rumrunner managed to flash the kernel, if that makes sense. I have flashed it back and will be attempting to rerun it tonight. If that doesn't work I'll go the way of doing a factory reset to see if that helps.

There is an ruu method yes. But you have to be s-off and you have to relock your bootloader before flashing. I've done it a few times myself with the decrypted RUU Zarboz posted.

Greetings,
New owner of an HTC one and I've been searching for days on a way to get my phone in a state where I can flash ROMS.
From what I've read, if you have Android 4.3 you are out of luck. My phone has 4.2.2. and OS-1.10.605.15 HBOOT - 1.54 . It seems like every resource I've found requires either s-off , root, or unlocked bootloader . HTCDEV no longer an option? so where do I start?
I ran rumrunners tool thinking that was a good place to start and got "device not rooted OR insecure kernal".
Sorry if I'm blind and not searching enough but could someone point in the right direction?
Thanks,
Jen

So you were able to unlock the bootloader with HTCdev.com?
i used rumrunner
when the 4.3 update came out I went through the lock unlock bootloader tut on here because i thought bootloader had to be locked to get ota and locked my bootloader from what i was told it was a mistake
so what i did was changed my cid to the super one something like 111111 then went to htc dev and got a token then changed my cid back to verizons it was no biggie but it did work for me i think because i was s offed already
Here is with out htc dev

You do need to be s-off. It won't let you change it otherwise. From personal experience with s-on and confirmed with threads like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317536
Yeah I thought so myself although with the bootloader now locked for good because of vz you can't get soff that easily. This of course would work if you use the java card because that will give you soff and in turn you can change cid to go to the site and unlock the bootloader.

It's been awhile since I've messed around with Android bootloaders, but my buddy just came to me with a seemingly fried HTC One that has been stock since it was purchased. I'm trying to help him out.
We can get to the bootloader, but that is it. No OS will load, and the factory reset option does nothing. I read up on unlocking the bootloader via HTCDev, but as I'm sure you're all aware, that no longer works (MID Error 160) due to Verizon patching the exploit.
I discovered the following XDA development thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2473644 , but I am not allowed to post on that thread because I don't have enough posts!
It's a little bit over my head, as I'm not familiar with the rumrunner / s-off process. However, it seems that I will need to follow those steps if I want to unlock the bootloader with the hope of flashing a ROM and resurrecting the phone.
My question is this: with the current state of this phone not being able to load any OS / ROM, and having a locked bootloader, is there any possibility I can unlock the bootloader and get a ROM flashed? Is it possible I'm overthinking this? Is there a way to simply flash the stock ROM again since that is seemingly nowhere to be found? Or is this phone simply bricked? Since I can get to the bootloader, I would imagine there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks for any help you guys can give. If someone wants to offer their assistance to me directly and take the issue off the message boards, I'll gladly PayPal you 20 USD if you have a solution!
Hope everyone is having a Happy New Year.
Just to clarify, the bootloader is locked and I have S-ON.
It seems I am in a bind, because I cannot flash any stock ROM or recovery with a locked bootloader. And I cannot unlock my bootloader because Verizon has blocked the standard exploit using HTCDev.
Hey buddy, what you need is a signed ruu which is the factory version of the os that comes with the phone. The signed part means that you can flash it with locked bootloader. Here Ya go

Just ask me if you have any questions. You will need to have the htc drivers and fastboot and adb installed of course.

Thanks so much for your reply. I've got the HTC drivers and the Android SDK loaded, and I used the fastboot tool when trying to unlock the boot loader using HTCDev.
Just to clarify, am I simply looking to download the signed RUU at the bottom of the second paper in that thread? Then flash it? Is that all? A lot of the other instructions in that thread seem irrelevant to my situation. If you could just point me in the right direction as to what I need to do with that RUU file, I'd appreciate it.

If you took the 4.3 update you will need the 4.3 ruu which I haven't seen yet....so if locked and s-on you are screwed. Now depending on how far they took the flashing and since you say its a sprint phone you might be able to HTC Dev unlock and at least get something booted until s-off is achieved on 4.3.

I currently hate myself for my silly failure. Oh jeez, its embarrassing to explain but I was in a rush and didn't realize I was in the HTC One international ROM section and downloaded and installed ARHD not knowing my Verizon HTC One wouldn't work. Sigh, big failure on my part, I was trying to go skate but looks like I'm spending my Friday fixing my issues :crying:
Well, when in bootloader it tells me that my phone is unlocked and currently S=OFF. I have CWM Recovery flashed on it at the moment. I tried sideloading CM11 on, but ADB doesn't detect my device. Yet the strange part is Fastboot does. I have work in a little and desperately need my phone up and running before hand. (as my job revolves around my phone.)
Please, anyone out there know my situation? I've spent all day trying to find my solutions so i decided to turn to the experts. :fingers-crossed:

I hate to be the n00b, but I already freaked up my phone once. (Thankfully its not really bricked) I can't lie, I'm pretty scared to fully mess it up haha. Is there anyone who can help me through it? I understand the steps on which through fastboot, but its the little things that I am not sure of.
Just do the ruu. No need to relock or s-on. What little things are you worried about? Ive seen threads that say you need to relock it too. But i knkw for a fact its not needed, as i did an ruu yesterday while s-off and unlocked in order to take the kk ota. Never lost s-off and never lost my unlocked status, despite hboot being downgraded and then upgraded.

Thank you for the lead. So any of these will work?
1.10.605.08 Decrypted RUU
1.10.605.10 Signed RUU
1.10.605.15 Decrypted RUU
1.10.605.15 Signed RUU
2.10.605.1 Decrypted RUU
2.10.605.1 Signed RUU
Decrypted if you are S Off?
Signed if you S on?
Is my understanding correct in that I would need to Re-Lock the bootloader as well?
Yes they will all work, it dosent matter if its signed or not since your unlocked and s-off. 2.10.605.1 is obviously the newst. And no you do not need to relock the bootloader, i dont know how that mith ever got started.
Hello all,
I am new to all this, techy stuff, and have recently bought a htc one m8. I had it rooted for me, but I didn't want to pay for GPE. I then found out Lollipop has been released, and tried to get it by going into software info on settings, but I couldn't get the lollipop update, as my phone says 'Your phone software is up to date with the latest version'. I realised that because of my root, my phone wasn't on the same channel as it was on before. I found another way to get lollipop, but that meant buying sunshine for $25. Is there another free alternative? I thought I could unroot my phone, then reroot it, but I do not know how to unroot, get update then reroot. Can I please get help?
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist, in order to help you effectively I need to know which variant of the M8 you have please.
I have the gsm version
Ok, so it's not carrier branded at all?
no its not.
Going back to my question, i have actually found out my fone is on s-off bcus i had to unlock bootloader to root, meanin my fone is rooted with s-off. However, i would like to get gpe on my fone so i can get lollipop. Only issue is, the other methods do it on a normal htc one m8, not on a rooted htc one m8. Are the nethods the same meaning i can use the normal gpe conversion methods on my prerooted htc one m8, or do i need another method?
Thanks for the extra information, I'm actually asking you these questions for a reason, XDA Assist isn't a general technical support section so I needed to know exactly which variant you have in order to have this thread redirected correctly for you.

Unlocking your bootloader doesn't make you S-Off. Boot into your bootloader to check.
To get into bootloader, turn off your phone. Then hold down the power button plus vol down till your phone boots back up. You'll get a readout there that will tell you if you are S-Off or S-On.
If you can confirm that you are S-Off, I will guide you to converting your phone to GPE.

You can't use moonshine. The ONLY way to get s-off on this device is sunshine.
Yes, Sunshine, V3. And you are better off without the 5.0, if you want to S-OFF. Sunshine will most likely work on 4.4.4, and issues will appear while trying to S-OFF the Lollipop.

I have got my phone on bootloader, and I have a custom recovery file. However, I cannot seem to enter recovery mode. As I go to 'HBOOT' then 'RECOVERY' it shows the htc screen, but then it loads back to the bootloader screen. I have tried getting Hasoon's Toolkit and going into bootloader from here, and I have also tried getting a bat file and running that on my pc with my phone connected to it, same result. However, before this problem occurred, I had a message pop up, but this happened only once. This is what the message said:

After this, when I tried to go into recovery, the issue had then first occurred. Any suggestions on what to do? I have tried using a toolkit, a bat file, doing it through bootloader, and getting an app. Also, how can I clear my cache through bootloader?
