Had the same problem a few days ago, at first I thought it was faulty hardware or a bug with the stock firmware.
But it was working perfectly fine the minute before, so I suspected it may be related to something I was doing with the phone at the time.
After some experimenting, I have come to the conclusion that it's somehow affected by (multiple) Google Play apps downloading/installing. During this state, if the system idles and automatically turns off the display, there's a great chance that I can not wake up the phone. I did not try manually turning off the screen.
After the apps have all finished installing completely, I can't repro the problem. (Might have rebooted once, can't remember)
Maybe it's the same situation as yours or your friend's, hope this helps.

Yes, I have a feeling that this is the case.
My Z1C is fine, but I have experienced something similar with my Z Ultra.
It is hard to pinpoint exactly what the cause is, but multiple download and screen turning off reminds me of the situation when I run my U-torrent app on my ZU. At first I thought it was screen of death that was affecting some of the device back then on the older firmwares, but came to understand that it is the torrent app causing the probs.
So multiple play store apps download can possibly have similar issues!
Hmmm, no apps downloading at the time, just killed all of the background apps and seems to have worked
Cheers guys

It's a common issue I've found with pretty much any Android device (experience of it on Samsung Galaxy S, HTC One X, and now Sony Xperia Z1 Compact).
It's rare, but whenever I notice it, it's always linked to the phone doing a complication of heavy task processing (such as installing apps) at the same time as heavy downloads (such as downloading apps).
If I've left my apps for a while, and then update say 30 all together, you'll get this issue on pretty much any android phone while it's trying to hammer away at the other tasks it's doing.
Have the same issue here, without any Google Play downloading going on. I didn't have that on my previous Android phone (Motorola Droid RAZR).
I noticed that rebooting the phone cures the problem for a while, but I would like to solve the problem once and for all.

I just had to deal with this. Power button gets progressively worse til it never responds again. You can remap other buttons but you're stuck once it powers off!
The cause is that the ribbon cable connector for the power & volume buttons worked itself loose. It can be fixed by putting a little foam pad on it to discourage it from coming loose again. I think it's amanufacturing fault - there should have been one put on at the factory. The connector is under the screen; you don't need to disassemble anything else, but the screen is very, VERY easy to break when removing - heroic patience required

I don't got problems with listening to music, maybe some app is messing your phone. if you can't find the problem do a "Factory data reset", if this doesn't help you can bring the phone back and get a new one. It can always be a faulty phone.
My Arc sometimes reboots on me too but not randomly. It's always when it's doing something that maxes the CPU and I switch between apps simultaneously. It's quite annoying, no doubt. My old Desire never did this.
Hoping for a future fw update!

I'm pretty confident its caused by buggy software and not broken hardware.
Looking forward to flashing some custom roms and kernels to get around this and up the perfomance
15 times
my arc have randomly rebooted at least 15 times in the past 3 days. it's so annoying. what's that thing with stuffing tissue paper on the back does it work?
i've reflashed mines twice now, and done reset to factory default on top of that after the second flash for good measure, and it's still rebooting when it feels like it. i uninstalled a weather widget, and i got almost 5 hours of constant uptime. i'm about to reflash it again and not install anything, maybe just battery monitor so i can tell how many hours/minutes i can get before it reboots again.
i read about the battery fit, and i have tried various things to try and see if that was the issue, but nothing physical seems to make it reboot, and like some others, i have seen it reboot when the lcd is off and the phone isn't doing anything.
i'd really like to be able to use this arc!
mine just had the first random reboot...first I thought that the battery was all drained out but then realised after switching it back on that it was at 20%...
the phone was on idle, locked...weird!!!
Just had my first random reboot after a months use, was using google nav while charging from the cigarette lighter. Quite annoying as i was trying to find my way somewhere and suddenly realised i hadnt had any instructions for a while. The phone had gotten quite hot - i think google nav must work it pretty hard.

If you use the home button to switch between recent apps a lot (i do) then it's pretty obvious if your phone's been rebooted as the recently used apps list is empty, so i'm fairly sure this is the first time my phone's rebooted on its own.
Random reboot here, too. ^^
I was typing an email with Google Mail app (with wifi and mobile data connection turned off, actually), when the screen became all coarse and broken (does anyone remember old DOS games crashes? ^^) and then it rebootet. Everything fine afterwards except for my email, which was gone.

Happened to me once... exactly as you described except I was retrieving email at that time, not typing or touching the screen at all.
Very strange thing happened to me today, went to wake my phone up from lock screen but I pressed the power button and nothing, no wake! I knew I had lots of battery left, but thought maybe it died for some reason, plugged in charger, no response still could not turn on, even holding the button down did no change, nor opening keyboard.
I then removed the battery and re-inserted, booted up and its working fine again
What happened?!
It just happens This happens to my Desire Z every month or so, no matter what rom I use. Recently I changed the radio the latest release, but it won't help I suppose... we'll see.
It seems nobody knows why this happens, many questions are scattered around the the forum about this hang and no answer
sorry for my english
gps make this problem (+ google maps + all google maps based programs)
just turn gps switch off
when you have to use gps, turn it on, use it, turn it off, reboot
and DZ should work fine
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=69305f1c1e5f8c31&hl=en
Not sure what causes this, but it happens occasionally to me too. Maybe once a month or so... Happened earlier today. Hadn't used Google Maps nor do I have any apps that use GPS to track my location.
Happens to me all the time, in average about once every 1-2 days. I put my phone on my desk with screen off, and an hour later it does not respond to the on/off button at all. Sometimes it will reboot when I press the button for over 15 seconds, but most of the time I have to pull the battery, which is a drag since I have a silicone phone protector. I have also noticed that every once in a while, the battery will be fully discharged when it does this. This morning my phone was at 80% battery power, I used it for a minute to check mail, then put it down. 15 Minutes later it was dead, and when I pulled the battery, all I got was a little screen saying 'Please connect charger immediately'. Kinda scary.
I've seen lots of posts about this too on androidforums.com and on MoDaCo. My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Ace on Android 2.2.4 and she has the exact same problem. I haven't found a solution yet, but it seems to be software-related (since it's not limited to Desire-Z), and more specifically Android-related (as it also happened on stock phones without any third-party apps installed). I upgraded to Android 2.3.3 last week and that did not solve it.
Other suspicions I found on other fora:
Correlation between 'phone sleep' and 'WiFi going to sleep' (some people report they benefit from keeping WiFi always off unless they really need it, some people report success keeping WiFi always on; for others - like me - it does nothing or made it worse)
Correlation between phone and SD card (phone does not work properly if the SD card is not the original one, or has not been formatted on the phone)
Correlation between WiFi and SD card (people report reformatting the SD card on their device helped, after they've turned WiFi off)
I have heard people that have had their phone replaced 7 times and all 8 phones did it, some others got the problem solved with one replacement, so it seems not all devices do it.
Check out this thread: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-ace/312084-randomly-turning-off.html
A personal observation of mine - and maybe hardware gurus can comment on it - involves the micro-USB connector. Not only is it a pain to connect (compared to mini-USB), but I have noticed that it very easily 'jitters' if there is a slight bend in the cable or if you move the phone while it's connected. The plug will then sit slightly crooked in the connector and the phone will stop charging. And actually, I'm pretty sure that the first time it 'died' on me was when this happened. Would it be possible that this triggers the event? And that the micro-USB is the common cause?
I wonder what radio all these dying phones were running? I had 12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26 , now I'm running latest radio, but only a few months will tell if that helped or not...
Update: it's been about a week now since I've disabled GPS and I haven't had a single SOD since! Seems that at least in my case GPS was the culprit, like others on here already suggested. Can anyone else confirm?

Hello,
i have the same issue with my Desire Z. Many people say its GPS related, i think so, too.
I never hat issues with GPS while navigate. But because the issue is probably caused bei GPS, i have a idea.
I use the wipe efs-data using for GPS from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028405
I never had freezes since this. Maybe it helps everyone. Please try and give feedback. Thanks.
Yesterday my Desire Z did exactly that. For the first time. First I thought the battery would be dead, but connection it to the charger didn't even make the orange LED turn on. So only taking out the battery and re-inserting it brought my phone back to life.
I had WiFi turned ON and GPS NOT turned OFF (though no Maps or anything running, so there was no satellite icon in the status bar the last time I had used it).
I will keep watching it, if GPS OFF or an EFS-WIPE might help. But right now it has crashed the first time in about two weeks, so it will be hard for me to tell any improvement before at least a month has passed. ;-)
Tronar
Addendum: after finishing this post, I went downstairs to pick up my phone. And it was dead again! Seems to be happening more often at the moment, than I thought. So I'm going to do an EFS-WIPE now.

google maps is running still in background (also when You try to kill it with taskkiller it will stand up) and use (or try to use) gps for example for location for weather forecast. it can happen that the gps icon cam in notifications bar only a few seconds so You can't see it
it is possible that another apk use (or try to use) gps to get Your location, geotagging photos or so.
just have always gps off (when you haven't to use it and reboot after using) it helps
Bad News, wiping efs-data did not resolve the SOD . Yesterday it happens again.
My gf has the Desire Z and loves the phone - cept for this random issue of her phone freezing on standby. After a bit of screwing around I found out it is definitely related to the GPS module. Whether it's a hardware or memory leak it doesn't matter to her. You can crash her phone anytime by simply using the GPS and any software (she likes google maps / navigation) when she's done whether she turns off the gps or not, makes no difference - within a few hours at the most - it'll crash every time.
The short version, after using your GPS you'll have to restart your phone and you'll never have it crash again.

Hello,
I have an HTC Desire HD running Android 2.3.3. The device isn't rooted and I've never rooted it before.
I've checked on this site, and I've scoured Google all day but I haven't managed to find anything that matches my problem specifically, as explained below.
In the last couple of days I have been having a bizarre problem where after several minutes of normal use the phone becomes completely unresponsive or very laggy (to the point where it is unusable). This occurs whether I am using apps or simply looking at the home-screen.
The only thing that's responsive is the screen lock button, this works as normal. However when I then try to unlock the screen, the phone is still unresponsive and I'm unable to unlock it.
The only fix I've found (if you can call it a fix) is to leave the phone alone for a several minutes. If I do this I can once again unlock the screen as normal and continue using the phone, however after a few minutes of use it locks up again! This has been happening since last night now and I've found no way to break this cycle.
I did a hard reset to see if this solved the problem but it had no effect. The phone will boot as normal, and after a few minutes of normal use it will become unresponsive again.
I've also booted my phone without the SD card in just in case anything on this was causing the problem, still no improvement.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue who could provide some insight as to what might be causing this issue? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
At first I thought this might have been a software issue, but as it persisted after the reset I'm beginning to think this might not be the case.
Thanks,
KaRsKiN
The problem is coming from the magnetometer. I have the same issue, please check this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394264
The only workaround I found is to disable screen rotation and do a couple of restarts (not switch off). Of course, no compass in the end, but at least I can use the phone.

It is possible that your battery could be failing. See if att has one they will let you exchange.
If its not the battery then it could be a hardware issue. Just send it in for warranty if that is the case. You should still be covered as the phone is not yet a year old.

How should this be connected to the battery...?
Anyway, I think that it is a software issue rather than a hardware one. Maybe something is running in the background, using 100% of the cpu. You could try CPUNotify for realtime cpu monitoring.
If that doesn't work, you should try the magnetometer way. Maybe it's a new issue. Never heard about it though

I'm not going to explain in detail about the relationship of voltages and CPU usage. The battery being bad can and has caused these exact issues. Just like if a power supply is failing it can cause a blue screen in windows. In android the phone rebooting itself or freezing is the equivalent to a blue screen. Since they have never rooted and are on a stock rom there is nothing except a hardware problem that would cause this. If the battery is not the culprit then one of the many components in the phone can cause freezes and reboots if it is failing. Android os does not allow a single task to take over the CPU. This is not a windows os. So like I said, just use your warranty and get it fixed. Stock phones should not be presenting this behavior, you would have to root it to cause these kind of problems.

Hi!
Have anyone notised this problem with Z1C?
I received my Z1C 4 days ago and this has happened once every day. It seems to appear when trying to unlock the phone and all of a sudden it goes mad and nothing seems to happen when touching the screen. Otherwise the device seems to work fine. But do you guys think this is a software issue that can be fixed at next update or do you think I need to RMA?
regards.
This looks like a software issue to me... Try to factory reset your device and if it still persist reflash it with PC Companion it should fix the issue. A hardware defect can't make a phone like that don't worry

I cannot se anykind of app that I installed that would mess up the device like that? Ive installed about 15 apps and mostly "stand alone" apps like skype, sofascore and MX player. The app that closest could affect the UI is then maybe Nova launcher (got the prime verision) but I dont think it would mess up the lockscreen like that? (Or atleast it havent on any of my other devices, always felt solid and worked perfect)
It's not always about apps you installed though... There could be data files from system apps that got corrupted and caused the issue.
Do you have glove mode on at all? The screen is very sensitive, it could be some conductive dirt on the screen. I tested my Z1C in the shower, a drop of water rolling down the screen is enough to open the notification area or scroll a website in chrome.
Did you see this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2643078
I think this is a hardware issue.
This happens more often if you use some sort of flip case (I had roxfit).
Now I have only a screen protector with hardcase i have still lockscreen ghost touches but less.
To fix it just clean the display with cloths or something you prefer.

Okay, this is starting to be interesting. I actually did a factory reset three days ago and now this phenomenon haven't happened since before the reset. Though I must admit that Im not sure if I noticed the problem before mounting the Muvit Easy Folio case since I got the case the day after I got the phone. Unfortunately I have not had time to reinstall all apps that I had before the factory reset so for now my phone is not really comparable with the device it was three days ago. After the weekend I will probably know more since I will have had more time testing and installing all the former apps (then I can uncheck that variable). I hope its not the case since I have not found any other case that's lime and also cover the screen, though It also looks like a possible troublemaker (according to delimanyak23 and the thread)
time will show, I'll be back when Ive done some more research
This happened to me but in homescreen. I just turned off the screen. Wipe the screen with my tshirt for 2-3 secs and viola problem gone. Weird but it works

Nb : glove mode is off, no screen-protection used, a protectiln case is used but i don't know what model it is. I'll you the update after trsting the new phone.

Hmm, I keep mine out of a case,.. Yeah I'm not sure what it is, it's a 50/50 between some say software and some say hardware. I would asume that software would of been fixed by now, either Samsung or 3rd party

So I found a solution for the issue in my case, it does seem to be software but it's really weird cause the issue continues in any firmware, it started when I was on 6.0.1 PI2, then I flashed Nougat and had the same problem (I hated it and battery drain was killing me) I went back to 6.0 and changed to the PK2 version and the issue continued, it was really weird cause it would cut out in audio messages, games but not music, I also tried every single suggestion on every forum and post I could find EXCEPT the Soundabout app, today I gave up, installed soundabout, selected media to speakers and bam, problem solved, I still need further testing, but it seems ok for now, keep in mind that I also have "prevent USB audio routing" on and "Easy Mute" off.

Im trying the soundabout app now, I orginally had it set to automatic and was still having the issue, now I set it to speaker and so far so good.
as this worked for me but idk about others... I was told to remove all paired bluetooth devices (on/off doesnt matter) then go to settings>connections>more connection settings>nearby device scanning then turn off... worked for me... (sorry for zombifying an old post but as this is still current with mine and many devices i decided to help)

Is anything still wrong? Or does the sound work both with and without headphones?
