[Q] Flash ROM using Odin vs. Recovery (convert zip to rar?) - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm flashing my first ROM today, and have settled on Wicked.
I found that flashing TWRP using Odin was super painless and smooth, and I've seen other ROMs that can be installed using Odin (and I don't have much storage space left)
The download for Wicked is a zip file, though (am I correct that Odin requires tar files only?)
Can I unzip the Wicked download, then put it into a tar file using Windows (WinRAR) (or I can also use Linux) for installation via Odin?
If it's possible to do this, is there any special way that these archives are built? Anything to pay attention to?

Just download the zip, flash in recovery. Can't get any easier than that. Plus Wicked has an aroma installer so you need to go recovery route. If you're worry about space, delete zip after you're done.

I agree use recovery. If you don't have space in your phone's sdcard just transfer your files to your PC then flash the ROM in recovery and then transfer your files back to your phone.

Thanks for the replies. That seems sensible, use the format that's given, especially for my first time.
That said, I *am* interested about the possibilities of converting from zip to tar and installing with Odin for future reference. I am comfortable with developer tools, just new to the Android environment. Should I ask this question in the developer sub-forum instead?

Actually it wouldn't be just converting from zip to tar. Tar files include the bootloader, modem and radio. Zip Roms do not include any of these items, just the kernel. It's by far much easier to flash via recovery. TWRP is a great recovery I've tried them all and it's compatible with most roms out there.

How to flash roms with Mobile Odin Pro

I have read that some people prefer to use Mobile Odin Pro to flash roms, kernels and such in place of CWM. I know how to use it when the files are in the tar format but I am wondering if there is a way to flash roms that are in the zip format and made for CWM? Am I missing something or did I misunderstand what I read?
Thanks in advance.

unfortunately if its in zip I believe its only through cwm. just like regular odin.
OK, so the roms have to be in the tar format. Is there a way to repack the zip into a tar that can be flashed via Mobile Odin Pro?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Not really sure about this but if you use root explorer and press and hold on a file it will give you an option to convert to tar file or something like that. Idk if that would work or not but just happened to notice it last night.

although rootexplorer does format it into tar it won't flash via odin or mobile odin. the only way I know of is to have a linux partition on your computer. other than having linux it won't work. it may be in tar format but it needs to know where to put those file in which place. and just converting it to tar doesn't work. I have even tried putting a pit file in with the files in a tar and it didn't work.
OK, that's what I thought but I figured I'd ask. Thanks for your answers.

lol thats not true.. yes .zips are made for cwm, but if you notice in mobile odin pro it can actually open certain types of files and extract the different parts of it to flash such as kernel, modem, etc. etc. this is how i flashed a zip through mobile odin pro, however for whatever reason gave me issues with the modem.. on ICS, I had to flash rogue fb17 kernel to get cwm back, then flashed the fb21 modem through cwm. either way, there is a way to extract the files from the .zip to be flashed in mobile odin.. there is a setting in the app that says open and extract the files.. have a look see! besides all that, I love mobile odin and prefer to use it when possible over using cwm anyday..
well I do not doubt that you used it. however I have many roms in. zip format. when I try to use the extract feature the only ones I can extract from are the. tar and tar.md5 files. maybe I'm messing up or something.
I have tried to open zip files using the method you suggested and it's like it doesn't see the zip file in the directory I put it in.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
when I do it I look in the directory and it only sees the tar files I have of the stock tars I have in the same directory. I have looked into it on chainfires thread and it makes no mention from what I have seen of flashing rom zips.

ya it is a full rom. but its in tar format. I was under the impression from the other poster in here zip were flashable too. I realize that what cwm is for. I have used mobile odin many times. and I'm almost positive it does not flash zips. just figured if he did it he might want to share.
hmmm
My plan was to only use m.o. to flash, (after root via 2c) so I'll have to figure this out...

I could flash my kernel using 'zImage' file using Mobile ODIN.
TLR Version. Don't. If it was meant for CWM use it in CWM.
I don't think you guys are going to have any luck with that. When (Mobile) odin flashes a tar file it is flashing a factoryfs.img. When CWM flashes a zip it copies the files over.
You could, in theory*, convert the flash-able zip into a flash-able tar by moving the files in the zip into a proper factoryfs.img or a system.img... but its not really an easy task and you're VERY likely to end up with a (almost**) permanent brick and or paperweight.
So just don't. You can flash Kernels and full system restores tars with it, but other than that, I wouldn't play with it.
* I say in theory because I'm not gonna test it. I don't see why I wouldn't, but there is no reason to risk anything.
**You could probably unbrick it with a JTAG, but that is a whole different mess.
Clearing cache before flashing
I'm a beginner. My last cell phone was very old and could only make calls, and I jumped into the s3 because I heard it's a good phone.
I've figured out how to root it and unlock it, and I have installed mobile odin pro. I copy the zipped rom directly to my phone and start mobile odin pro, which asks me if I want to unzip the rom and install it. Well, yes, I do. So it goes about doing its thing, reboots, and fails. I have tried installing three different roms with the same result each time.
My question is this: will mobile odin pro automatically clear the cache, the darvik cache and so on? Or should I do this manually from within the mobile odin pro app before flashing the rom?
Any help will be much appreciated
If you have an s2 this is not the forum for you. Just a heads up. Anything flashable from this s2 forum will wreck your phone

[Q] Flashing using Odin

OK. Love Odin and big thanks to all devs out here helping and answering questions.
Have flashed twice now with Odin . Once to root and the other to to flash to sfhub's fe21. Wow what a great developer. Big thanks.
My question comes from wanting to use sfhub's Odin data/wipe first then use Odin to flash a rom. Can I? How? I know you can use it to load kernels and modems. Same question of how.
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk 2
What do you mean exactly? Are you asking if there is a data wipe you can flash with Odin? Whenever something is flashed in Odin it automatically wipes everything it needs to. And to flash a ROM just stick the tar in the PDA slot, same as if you were flashing a kernel.
---------- Post added at 06:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:21 PM ----------
My mistake I see sf created a data/wipe tar. My bad! It looks like he has it in the one-click Odin style. It's even easier that way. Just download on your PC double click the file to launch and then hook up your phone when it's in download mode. After that click start and you should be good to go. I have to download that, it can definitely come in handy. With the one-click Odin you don't need to select which slot to put the tar in it's all ready to flash.
One I am asking exactly that about the kernel and rom in the PDA section. Got it thanks! Next, where does the modem programming go? Recoveries?
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Tapatalk 2
Modem goes in the Phone slot in Odin. If it was a zip file then you would use recovery to flash it. Stick to Odin though. It's way easier and tons safer than using Recovery. Check out the app Mobile Odin Pro you can put right on the phone. It automatically puts the rom/kernel/modem in the correct slot so you don't have to worry about putting it in the wrong one. The only thing is Mobile Odin can't flash modems for our phone. It doesn't like CDMA. So in regular Odin on your PC ROMS and kernels go into PDA and modems into the phone slot. Not too hard to remember but if you put it in the wrong one it isn't fun, lol.
Ok. sfhub made a data/wipe Odin tool that I plan into incorporating into my regime way of flashing.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, that's what I had just realized he posted tonight. I'm glad he did that, makes it a lot easier to do that now. Love Odin. Way faster than going into recovery and doing it in there.
Follow up: I booted to Odin and used the flash. Then what? I got a android figure with like an atom glowing on it after. I went back down to Odin 1.85 then couldn't figure how to load a rom zip. So I ended up using Odin one step to fe22. So how do you load roms then? thru the md5 file selection in pda? rom.zip files are usually loaded in recovery. But how do you load a rom into Odin? I know to use the pda selection. Think I will use winrar to change to a tar to use.

[Q] Flashing ROM with Mobile Odin Pro

Hello, so here's my situation
I want to flash a ROM. For all intents and purposes, we'll say I want to flash FreeGS3. I went and downloaded FreeGS3 and the Kernel they recommend you use with it. My problem is, custom recovery simply DOES NOT WORK FOR ME. I don't know why, it just never has. I have done everything I could find on making CWM or other recoveries work. Nada. I currently have TWRP recovery which I installed through the app on Play Store, GooManager. Flashing .zip with recovery, I always get an error, usually status 7 report.
So I eventually gave up on that, and I want to flash FreeGS3 through either Heimdall or Mobile Odin Pro (I don't have a Windows comp). My problem is how do I repackage the .zip do be a flash-able .tar file? I've looked on other threads that said it was either impossible or too dangerous to be practical. Here's what I've done so far (before realizing that you can't just flash any .tar file)
1. unzipped both freegs3 and the kernel.
2. copied files over from the kernel, only the files that didn't already exist in freegs3
3. repackaged the modified freegs3-kernel mix as .tar file (named it rom.tar)
4. copied it onto my phone /sdcard/Movies/
5. tried (failed) to flash using Mobile Odin Pro
I also have stock firmware for my phone on both my phone and on my computer as a .tar.md5 file that IS flash-able, incase I need to do any fixing.
Soooo what do?
How do I repackage this stuff into a flashable .tar or .tar.md5? If I can't, any alternative ideas?
Mobile Odin Pro now supports flashing zips as well! Just put it in the OTA / Update zip area and flash away!

how do i flash a zip file rom on download mode?? lost
Do you not have a cable to connect the phone to the computer ?
If not, perhaps you should buy one (they are cheap) before continuing on. I know you can transfer files without one, but it's really invaluable and I wouldn't start messing around in my phone without it in case something like this happened.
Do you have an SD card in the phone now ? Do you have an adapter or something ?

Yes just follow the directions step-by-step using the root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA.7z file for T-mobile. Do NOT SKIP any steps. Also to note, after you flash, you will be on a completely stock rom but WITH root (rooted).

Well, the fw is just short for firmware. Not part of the file name.
Basically you download the version you want, UVDLJA for jb, UVALJ4 is the latest ics.
If you want pure stock, get the regular firmware. If you want root, use the root66 version. (Root66 is identical to stock fw but is pre-rooted).
Flash whichever one you choose and you will be fully stock.
If you go to the firmware thread in my sig you will find all available firmwares, regular and root66 (ignore the ota files).
In post 2 of the thread you will find Odin, Drivers and instructions. Look for the Odin Instructions, not Mobile Odin.
If you alreadyhave kies or drivrrs installed, don't reinstall them unless you're having problems.
Good luck! Ill try to keep popping in to see if you have any more questions.

Or use mrRobonsons thread. Whichever is easier.
Some get confused, but use 7zip to extract the root66 firmware.
Tbe file you flash in odin will have the extension: .tar.md5

Maybe gove a little bit more info. We all know Panic Mode when we see it, so just try to be clear and concise as you can.

[Q] Latest CWM

I was wondering, does the latest CWM 6.0.4.3 have a tar.md5 version that I can use to flash the recovery via ODIN? I've digged through a few threads all over the place and tried Google searches but nothing comes up, either it's not available (only through ROM Manager) or I missed it somewhere.

Your othe option would be to use mobile odin from the play store, rename the .img to recovery.img and place in root of internal storage. then choose and flash with mobile odin.

That's true, but when wanting to switch from a stock non rooted rom to a custom rom, it makes it a lot easier and faster if I can simply get CWM and flash a rom instead of having to root the stock rom and then having to go through that process.
