[Q] Flashing ROM with Mobile Odin Pro - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello, so here's my situation
I want to flash a ROM. For all intents and purposes, we'll say I want to flash FreeGS3. I went and downloaded FreeGS3 and the Kernel they recommend you use with it. My problem is, custom recovery simply DOES NOT WORK FOR ME. I don't know why, it just never has. I have done everything I could find on making CWM or other recoveries work. Nada. I currently have TWRP recovery which I installed through the app on Play Store, GooManager. Flashing .zip with recovery, I always get an error, usually status 7 report.
So I eventually gave up on that, and I want to flash FreeGS3 through either Heimdall or Mobile Odin Pro (I don't have a Windows comp). My problem is how do I repackage the .zip do be a flash-able .tar file? I've looked on other threads that said it was either impossible or too dangerous to be practical. Here's what I've done so far (before realizing that you can't just flash any .tar file)
1. unzipped both freegs3 and the kernel.
2. copied files over from the kernel, only the files that didn't already exist in freegs3
3. repackaged the modified freegs3-kernel mix as .tar file (named it rom.tar)
4. copied it onto my phone /sdcard/Movies/
5. tried (failed) to flash using Mobile Odin Pro
I also have stock firmware for my phone on both my phone and on my computer as a .tar.md5 file that IS flash-able, incase I need to do any fixing.
Soooo what do?
How do I repackage this stuff into a flashable .tar or .tar.md5? If I can't, any alternative ideas?

Mobile Odin Pro now supports flashing zips as well! Just put it in the OTA / Update zip area and flash away!
Chainfire is AWESOME!!!

How to flash roms with Mobile Odin Pro

I have read that some people prefer to use Mobile Odin Pro to flash roms, kernels and such in place of CWM. I know how to use it when the files are in the tar format but I am wondering if there is a way to flash roms that are in the zip format and made for CWM? Am I missing something or did I misunderstand what I read?
Thanks in advance.

unfortunately if its in zip I believe its only through cwm. just like regular odin.
OK, so the roms have to be in the tar format. Is there a way to repack the zip into a tar that can be flashed via Mobile Odin Pro?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Not really sure about this but if you use root explorer and press and hold on a file it will give you an option to convert to tar file or something like that. Idk if that would work or not but just happened to notice it last night.

although rootexplorer does format it into tar it won't flash via odin or mobile odin. the only way I know of is to have a linux partition on your computer. other than having linux it won't work. it may be in tar format but it needs to know where to put those file in which place. and just converting it to tar doesn't work. I have even tried putting a pit file in with the files in a tar and it didn't work.
OK, that's what I thought but I figured I'd ask. Thanks for your answers.

lol thats not true.. yes .zips are made for cwm, but if you notice in mobile odin pro it can actually open certain types of files and extract the different parts of it to flash such as kernel, modem, etc. etc. this is how i flashed a zip through mobile odin pro, however for whatever reason gave me issues with the modem.. on ICS, I had to flash rogue fb17 kernel to get cwm back, then flashed the fb21 modem through cwm. either way, there is a way to extract the files from the .zip to be flashed in mobile odin.. there is a setting in the app that says open and extract the files.. have a look see! besides all that, I love mobile odin and prefer to use it when possible over using cwm anyday..
well I do not doubt that you used it. however I have many roms in. zip format. when I try to use the extract feature the only ones I can extract from are the. tar and tar.md5 files. maybe I'm messing up or something.
I have tried to open zip files using the method you suggested and it's like it doesn't see the zip file in the directory I put it in.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
when I do it I look in the directory and it only sees the tar files I have of the stock tars I have in the same directory. I have looked into it on chainfires thread and it makes no mention from what I have seen of flashing rom zips.

ya it is a full rom. but its in tar format. I was under the impression from the other poster in here zip were flashable too. I realize that what cwm is for. I have used mobile odin many times. and I'm almost positive it does not flash zips. just figured if he did it he might want to share.
hmmm
My plan was to only use m.o. to flash, (after root via 2c) so I'll have to figure this out...

I could flash my kernel using 'zImage' file using Mobile ODIN.
TLR Version. Don't. If it was meant for CWM use it in CWM.
I don't think you guys are going to have any luck with that. When (Mobile) odin flashes a tar file it is flashing a factoryfs.img. When CWM flashes a zip it copies the files over.
You could, in theory*, convert the flash-able zip into a flash-able tar by moving the files in the zip into a proper factoryfs.img or a system.img... but its not really an easy task and you're VERY likely to end up with a (almost**) permanent brick and or paperweight.
So just don't. You can flash Kernels and full system restores tars with it, but other than that, I wouldn't play with it.
* I say in theory because I'm not gonna test it. I don't see why I wouldn't, but there is no reason to risk anything.
**You could probably unbrick it with a JTAG, but that is a whole different mess.
Clearing cache before flashing
I'm a beginner. My last cell phone was very old and could only make calls, and I jumped into the s3 because I heard it's a good phone.
I've figured out how to root it and unlock it, and I have installed mobile odin pro. I copy the zipped rom directly to my phone and start mobile odin pro, which asks me if I want to unzip the rom and install it. Well, yes, I do. So it goes about doing its thing, reboots, and fails. I have tried installing three different roms with the same result each time.
My question is this: will mobile odin pro automatically clear the cache, the darvik cache and so on? Or should I do this manually from within the mobile odin pro app before flashing the rom?
Any help will be much appreciated
If you have an s2 this is not the forum for you. Just a heads up. Anything flashable from this s2 forum will wreck your phone

[Q] How to update.zip HELP! E: can't mount /SDcard (no such directory or file)

Can someone PLEASE provide step by step directions for flashing update.zip's for ICS ROMS.
My understanding is, and please correct me if I am wrong, that if you are running ICS ROM you can't access CWM due to compatibility issues and potential of bricking. However, you can access (e3) android recovery.
Here is the usual update process (correct please if something is wrong):
- Download a particular update.zip to SD Card (place in /SD directory, folder important? root folder?)
- May need to rename to update.zip (making sure you don't rename it to update.zip.zip)
- Restart phone
- Hole vol up and power to access (e3) recovery
- Wipe cache
- Use vol bttns to select update from SD card
I am running currently the Frankenstein Ego 4.5 ROM (amazing, make sure to check it out; TEAM Era did and continues to do an excellent job). They are pushing some update.zip thru. including S voice fix.
My problem: when I try to flash any update, including the S voice V4 patch, I get the following during (e3) recovery: E: can't mount /SDcard (no such directory or file)
Things tried: I have tried reformatting the usb storage and remounting. I do not have a external SD card, just the usbstorage that came with the phone. I have tried changing mount as: either as R/O or R/W via Root Explorer. SD card permissions are all selected.
Please if you have any advice or recommendations enlighten "us". I realize this seems to be a common issue, but have yet to find constructive instructions to a solution.
TIA
Maybe unlocked recovery can only flash from an sd card? IDK havent used an unlocked recovery so that may be it.

Also, what is the purpose of the update.zip? You can still flash with EL26 stock CWM. A standard flashable zip used to push an app like TeamEra's Svoice is not going to alter partition information. Someone jump in and correct me if I'm off base with that.

I think youre correct about not altering partition information but I think its purpose is so it can be flashed through the stock unlocked recovery w/o having to go back to el26 etc.

It is signed. The issue is that it won't even mount the sdcard during (e3) recovery for me to be able to select the update.zip. The purpose was to update my s voice, but more importantly be able to update the ROM and be able to flash custom apps in the future..
I'm on stock El29 and rather not have to go back to El26 since it has works flawlessly. I really don't think that's the problem anyways.

The apk for Svoice that Teamera released may be signed but did you resign the entire zip file as well or are you just renaming his release to update.zip? I just would like to know what's been done to the file to create a flashable update.zip for use in recovery so there is no confusion.

I have the whole zip file (Has the META, the app etc). Again, when I go into recovery and select update from SD, shouldn't I be able to browse/select for update files? Instead I get the can't mount SD error.
I have not resigned it. Just renamed it.
Thanks!

Ok, most devs wouldn't have bothered signing their flashable zip (given it new certicates) so that it would be verified by the kernel so it will flash. I think that is how it works.
I want to learn how it works too. I just remember reading that for update.zip to work, it has to be signed. I think v4 svoice is the one you're trying to do correct? Let me see if I can remember how to sign a zip and maybe you can look around too.

Don't forget to rename it. I have no idea if it worked but the new certificates were created. If it works, I'll just send over the auto sign app too.

Did you follow the instructions? It's not safe to flash in your recovery, looks like you are trying to run update.zip from stock ICS android recovery
Instructions from your rom thread :
New version 4 "S Voice" update.zip patch v4/w support files (you will need to odin/mobie odin EL26 recovery/kernel then flash update.zip, then flash the FE16 kernel, then reboot and enjoy!
Only safe recovery to flash and the instructions states it so I think we should follow it.

Phone not booting after Odin Flash. Help?

So heres the back story:
The phone had CWM Recovery and had CM 10.1 nightly but I was unhappy with it.
I tried to flash from odin using the root66 pre rooted UVDJA rom
Didn't boot. It got to the Samsung bootanimation and just keeps glowing.
Tried root66 UVALJ4 same thing no dice
What can I do?
I assume I'm missing something and I still have Odin so I know I'm pretty sure I'm not totally boned.
In Odin I am clicking PDA and loading the .tar.md5 from the root66 .7z and clicking start.
Thanks
Fun story. I went into recovery and wiped and it works... Meh.
Thanks guys
BEST BET YOUTUBE OR GOOGLE QBKING77 ROOT S3 HE HAS EVERY CORRECT METHOD
I posted a response how to fix this
In another thread
Just download the stock jellybean tar file for t999 S3 QBKING77 VID SHOULD LEAD U TO FILES U NEED
Make sure to Uncheck all 3 boxes In Odin and rename the file delete the. Md5 it should be just
. Tar
Once odin says pass pull battery and reboot
Don't mess with flashing a custom odin rom just find a stock 4.1.1 with or without root
The best root method is using root from recovery zip when rooting I don't use the tool kit crap.
And ditch cwm that why it's jacked
Use twrp recovery download goo manager from market
Initially u have to flash cwm to root after u flash cwm. tar Then you download Goo manager and hit menu and install open recovery script then u have twrp recovery
Start fresh is your best bet

always flash roms with just zips

Or try to download a rom zip on pc
Transfer it via usb to the s3 internal memory
First reboot Into cwm mount usb and transfer the rom of choice u download on the pc
If u have cwm still u may be good just be sure to wipe data, dalvic and cache first.
Choose install

[Q]Updating to CWM Recovery 6.0.3.6?

I remember updating my phone to CWM Recovery 6.0.3.1 awhile back but I haven't a clue what I did to achieve the update. I downloaded the newest version but I can't remember what I do with the .IMG file..

Odin is preferred to push .img or .tar files. ..
They don't call it rom "mangler" for nothing. ..
And users, especially new ones, or those new to Samsung. ...should learn to use Odin and understand it's benefits. ..
Rom manager is a poor interface for sending files to a device, especially at the recovery level. ..as it leaves no recourse to correct its own errors. ...g

Umm.. no? It was CWM 6.0.3.6 at the time I made this post, the current CWM is 6.0.4.3 so there wasn't much of an update from there. I found a way to do this using terminal emulator so I got it figured out.

[Q] Flash ROM using Odin vs. Recovery (convert zip to rar?)

I'm flashing my first ROM today, and have settled on Wicked.
I found that flashing TWRP using Odin was super painless and smooth, and I've seen other ROMs that can be installed using Odin (and I don't have much storage space left)
The download for Wicked is a zip file, though (am I correct that Odin requires tar files only?)
Can I unzip the Wicked download, then put it into a tar file using Windows (WinRAR) (or I can also use Linux) for installation via Odin?
If it's possible to do this, is there any special way that these archives are built? Anything to pay attention to?
Just download the zip, flash in recovery. Can't get any easier than that. Plus Wicked has an aroma installer so you need to go recovery route. If you're worry about space, delete zip after you're done.
☞ Sent from here ☜
I agree use recovery. If you don't have space in your phone's sdcard just transfer your files to your PC then flash the ROM in recovery and then transfer your files back to your phone.

Thanks for the replies. That seems sensible, use the format that's given, especially for my first time.
That said, I *am* interested about the possibilities of converting from zip to tar and installing with Odin for future reference. I am comfortable with developer tools, just new to the Android environment. Should I ask this question in the developer sub-forum instead?

Actually it wouldn't be just converting from zip to tar. Tar files include the bootloader, modem and radio. Zip Roms do not include any of these items, just the kernel. It's by far much easier to flash via recovery. TWRP is a great recovery I've tried them all and it's compatible with most roms out there.
