After falling in love with my Nexus 5 y decided to buy a Nexus 7 2013 and I have to say stock ROM (KK) suck on the N7. I switched to Cyanogenmod 10.2.1 (4.3.1) and now it's incredibly fast en smooth. Based on your opinion and use, which is the best ROM for the N7?
Most people don't like "best rom posts", but I could recommend some.
Depending if you want speed or custom ability, there's a lot of different N7 Roms. Speed, I used cleanrom with elementalx kernel, works great. CM and PA and both good for customability.
You could also try out multirom to try out multiple Roms at once. I've never tried it, but heard its cool. Just make nandroid backups in cwm recovery so you can transfer data to each ROM.

You can try and decide which one fit your needs.

Just left my galaxy d2vzw and flashed an unofficial 10.1 it broke data to where I had 1x to nothing.. I flashed every ROM even Odin back stock root66 reprovision my sim. even got a new one and still no no more than 1xrtt to nothing..
Last time I was on my nexus I loved gummy and AOKP.
Any suggestions?
4.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.1
Which ROMs solid for each?
how broken is 4.2.1?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
its a nexus device, no need to hack anything to get 4.2.1 running, so 4.2.1 isnt broken at all. every rom listed in the development section is safe. you can even compile 4.2.1 from aosp yourself and run it if you wanted to. recommendations.. try out a bunch, find whats good for you. there are no bad roms.
Xenon HD is stable and fast..xylon is great as well..both 4.2.1

see, the problem with these kinds of threads start with this statement. best rom there is according to whom? i dont even think its close to the best rom. in fact, to me its rather bloated. best rom is subjective. every person has different needs, so every person has their own ideas to what best is. there is no best rom, theres only the best rom for you.
Stock ROM, most solid and safe, can't go wrong.
all the 4.2.1 roms i have tried are stable.. so try them and stick with the one YOU like
My girlfriend has been using a few custom roms that I've flashed for her on her nexus, but shes been having multiple SOD's and random restarts and other stability issues on 4.2.1 roms (tried a few). I would like to know the most stable rom/kernel combination that you have used in the past, 4.1.2 is preferable if the stability is better. Just basic rom features is all she needs, but stability and speed is most important, I feel pretty bad for giving her roms with some issues that I haven't experienced on my sgs3.
Thank you all for the help
If you are looking for stability and simplicity go with mmuzzy French vanilla rom. Its smooth and stable. If u want stable with mods go with carbon rom. Its fast smooth and good on battery life.

Thank you, I'm going to try flashing MMuzzy toro tonight and see how that works out
stock
yeah get her on 4.1.2 before she complains that you "broke" her phone lol. anyways i only use 4.1.2 roms right now, and i can tell you that jb sourcery 3.1 and liquid smooth 2.0 RC9 have both been straight shooters with great performance and not a single SOD in either of them
I just flashed MMuzzy's French Vanilla rom and my word is this thing awesome. Almost indistinuishable from stock. I wish I had a friend who had the GSM Gnex so we could compare features.
If you are looking for a few more features without losing stability I strongly recommend Nexus Evolution. The current version is from Jan 4 and a new version is likely to come out today or at least very soon

Thanks for all the responses I will be flashing a few of these tonight
If you want a daily driver, use stock (deodexed and rooted for customization)
Xenon is definitely my favorite.

I wouldn't recommend bugless. BuglessPete hasn't updated it since Nov, so it is still 4.1.1.
I would recommend stock, rooted, deodexed. If you want features, then MMuzzy has been quite stable for me.
I just flashed Carbon V1 over XenonHD and it's running pretty smoothly. A lot of the 4.2 and mostly all of the 4.1 ROMs are pretty stable overall.
Cyanogemod, Stock, AOSP, Pitchblack, Blackice, paranoid Android, or any other?
Long time reader, just got into flashing custom on my Galaxy Nexus, having fun so far. Though only tried bixie custom stock and cyanogemod 10.1 so far. Thanks to all the devs who create the roms and their work and added features.
aokp 4.1.2 milestone 1
no matter what rom/kernel mix i use, this one is always the best

I love AOKP for the sheer amount of things you can customize in that rom. I used it solely because of the ability to make the nav bar smaller.
I have been a fan of CM since 2009, and have always appreciated their abilities. A lot of roms use them as a base, so they must be doing something right.
I used ParanoidAndroid recently, and while I liked it, and it shows promise, it ran like crap on my phone.
I just use a stock rooted rom (verizon 4.2.2), as it runs the best on my phone. CM, AOKP, and PA were all laggy compared to stock for me.
Stock, because everything else starts acting up sooner or later and I hate restoring my data over and over again.

For those of you who switched, why'd you do it? Any difference in performance between cyanogenmod and straight stock?

I haven't tried it myself, but you may do better to ask this in the thread specifically for CM, over in the Android Development forum.
I haven't tried it on my nexus 7, because I don't need to. The main reason I use CM on my other devices is to get the stock android experience. Which I obviously don't need to do on the nexus. There's a few cool tweaks on CM that I'd like to see ported over to stock android. But nothing I can't live without. I'd say if you're curious, give it a try. You can always go back to stock if you don't like it.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I run CM on my S3 and love the added features but I think I'll stick to stock.

You can always do a nandroid. In fact you SHOULD always do a nandroid. If you flash CM and don't like it, just restore your nandroid and you'll be back up and running.
That said, back in the day I used to flash a different ROM every week. You needed to in order to get the most out of your phone. Nowadays, hardware and software are plenty good as is so there really isn't any need for a custom ROM from the performance side of things. So it really comes down to what features you would want. For me, I keep everything stock and just use Xposed and a few modules and I have everything I need, and still have the benefit of being stock and not having to worry about any bugs or glitches. I have 3 Android devices- Nexus 5, Nexus 7, and Moto X. All run stock Android (the Moto X is stock with just a few awesome add ons from Motorola), and all are set up with Xposed. I will likely never flash a custom ROM again. I know a lot of people share the same sentiment.
Just curious.. I don't see an Official CM 11 Nightlies thread anywhere for flo, but they exist.

Just got my Nexus 7, something I should be aware of?
To the person who started this thread...
If you want to have the best of both worlds by having your stock rom and CyanogenMod on your tablet as well then install MultiRom. This can be done very easily as long as your tablet is rooted. If your tablet is rooted just open up Google Play Store and then download "MultiRom Manager". MultiRom Manager I believe was developed by the same guy who created MultiRom.
With MultiRom you are able to install multiple ROM's on your tablet and never damage or touch your stock ROM. Also MultiRom lets you choose at boot time which ROM you want to boot. Your stock ROM will be labeled "internal" and each rom you add/flash will have a unique name. One piece of advice though, anytime you install a new ROM make sure you let it boot up at least one time before going on and flashing another ROM. If you don't let it boot up you could damage the ROM installation.
MultiRom is truly amazing you would be crazy not to install it or try it out.
Hope it helps.

I switched because I needed support for a USB DAC and it does the trick. No other complaints.

Same, you get almost the same benchmarks ( my stock 4.4.2 with some optimizations get 29500 ), less bugs, and the few features missing in the stock ROM can be found in GravityBox ) ! And obviously the OTA !

Ahh the best rom question :crying:
Simple : Which ever rom works for you is the best
anyway see what rom is offering and which features you're looking in a rom
Kernel : Unless you need specific reason for a custom kernel ,you can stick with stock kernels .
PS : Use Search
Oh OK! If I need custom kernel for performance and extended battery life, what is the best kernel that you recommended for my Nexus 7 LTE Kit Kat 4.4.2?

I won't get into which ROM is better or which kernel is best because that just starts ROM wars and no one wants that...
Here on XDA its not considered "polite" to start threads asking which ROM is best but i understand that you are concerned about your tablet, you spend a lot of money on it and you want to put a ROM on your tablet that will maximize performance and be safe for your tablet at the same time.
If you are looking for a good rom you can't go wrong with CyanogenMod or OmniROM. OmniRom has been working great on both of my Nexus 7 2013 tablets, DEB (LTE) and FLO (wifi only)
If you are looking for a custom kernel with good battery life you want to look into the ElementalX kernel. This kernels is great and it supports things like "usb fast charge" so you can charge your tablet faster, "undervolting" so that your battery lasts longer, and it supports "usb + otg host charging" so if you have an OTG cable with a Y-SPLIT you can charge your cable and at the same time have a flash drive connected to your tablet for an extended hard drive!
Many kernels don't support USB + OTG Host charging and i really love that feature about ElementalX.
Make sure you get the right kernel for your tablet which is nicknamed DEB (nexus 7 2013 LTE). You don't want to accidentally flash a kernel for the original Nexus 7 2012 tablet on your tablet!
Good luck brother...
