New Tasker Discovery - Nexus 7 (2013) Themes and Apps

ok, so i created a task that can wake my Nexus 7 2nd gen, input my password (bcoz i don't know a better way to open it ), run a program and press buttons then put it back to sleep. What i realized is that this won't work if i have the Moko case (sold separately) that its in closed. The tablet wakes up, the password is typed in (still slow as hell, does anyone know how to make tasker tap quicker?), then as soon as it is unlocked it goes right back to sleep because the case is still closed. The Moko case for the Nexus tablet puts it to sleep when the case is shut... Any ideas for this? And plz let me know if you know anything about making tasker tap quicker. I've read another blog about this and they got it to tap quicker i guess but it was with a nexus phone?? Thanks for all your help and time!

Try something more like this...

A much better solution (with secure settings plugin for tasker) would look a lot different...
Think more along these lines.
1) Disable PIN/Lock (secure settings)
2) Unlock device
3) Perform all the things you want to do
4) Enable PIN/Lock (secure settings)
5) Lock device
Should run smoother. Don't fret about having another plug in. Secure settings is totally worth it if you don't already have it. There are a lot of additional add on features. Let me know if you can come up with something that works!
P.S. As far as speeding up the actual taps, I'm not personally aware of a way to do that. What I said earlier should speed up the overall task though.

I'll try it now
Sounds good, hope it works. I'll try it now

What is it exactly? I turned off options in the plugin that aren't available to me...

I can't remember without doing some testing. Try using both "Password/PIN" (under Dev Admin Actions) and "Keyguard" (under Actions). You may need one, the other or both. I just can't remember. If you use pattern lock, there is a tool for that under Root Actions as well.

works but...
the keygaurd works but bcoz its in the moko case with the cover closed, it still kicks it right back to sleep. what now?

Just an idea...
Have you considered turning off the magnet controls via kernel/GB? I haven't fooled with it but I imagine this would solve your problem. Use S2S or Knock instead.

Can you lock phone settings

This seems like a pretty obvious question but all the searches I do come up with unrelated stuff about the phone lock screen but.....
Can you set some sort of pin/pattern to access the settings menu of your phone? basically so anytime someone clicks on a settings shortcut they get a prompt asking for a code to access it.
Seems like a nice and simple security measure but I can't seem to find anyway to make it possible.
Maybe this is a more general Android question than one for the GN but a GN and ICS is what I have
Look for "app protector" in the market.
Thanks but the free lite version on the market has so pretty bad reviews for it that look nasty
Honest question, why would you want to do this?
Well to stop people like my kids wiping settings like market to buy in app purchase with no pin is one example

Can't you tell them not to do that? Otherwise they don't get to use your phone?
Seems more like a parenting issue all of the sudden..
Well that was just an example another would be to stop people resetting Google wallet if youloose your phone and have no lock screen on wake
i set a PIN password on mine (which requires you to enter a PIN every time the phone is rebooted, and i use the autolock toggle from Widgetsoid 2.x Donate to temporarily disable the PIN lock when i'm in a safe area like at home for instance (no kids here). the PIN is restored by the OS if the phone is rebooted.
i dunno about the GNex, but on my Moto phone, you can bypass apps like App Protector by rebooting the phone into safe mode. that's not a risk with my method, access is controlled by the OS as long as the PIN is not temporarily disabled.
You really should be setting up a phone lock AND minding who's using your phone.
For app purchases, you can setup a pin for the market if you're worried about your kids purchasing apps, but the system-wide restrictions settings are quite limited compared with the setting which iOs offers.

I kind of agree but some time its a pain to constantly have the screen lock on
As for app purchaces like I said above all you have to do is go into settings\apps
and clear market data and the pin code is gone and you can buy anything again
And your kids would know how to go into settings and clear cache for the market and then go buy a app?
It's simple. Don't let your kids use your phone, I don't understand why you would let them use it anyway. You give it the risk of having it being dropped / damaged / etc.

heh Most of the unlock apps in the market do let you lock the settings so that's that problem solved guess I just think it would be a nice default in a rom

Anyone else hating the new lock screen?

I just want the old way of swiping into camera, unlock and google now.

Yes...I honestly dont like 4.2 at all. Kinda sux really. I dont like the quicksettings and I think the lockscreen is a step backwards...if I wanted lockscreen widgets Id buy widgetlocker.
Im still using 4.1.2 because of the sdcard crap that is going on with 4.2. I have no idea why google named the sdcard 0. Thats pretty stupid when it comes to compatibility and upgrading software. Something so simple causes so much probs. Ive had all my current sdcard stuff moved to /data/media...which it cannot be read from there (ie like gallery, etc). So...I manually move it back to sdcard...and it ruins all my pictures..0 byte jpgs...gray images...thanks google.
That and I couldnt tell you how many duplicate places there is for the sdcard. /storage/emulated0..../storage/legacy.../sdcard/0.../data/media...and having duplicate gobledy gook everywhere.
So...Im with you on the lockscreen...but not just that...its much worse.
edit: while Im at it I may as well just gripe about the kernels lately. All of them have jacked up wifi for me. I have no idea why...my wifi stalls all the time since the 3.0.49 branch. No dev has worked them out yet. I get dropped connections all the time....I get stalls (which I have blue connectivity (full bars)...and pages wont load...its just kinda stuck there in lingo with the incoming/outgoing arrows toggling back and forth....then sometimes it will load after 30 seconds...sometimes a minute or more. Ive had to disconnect wifi...turn it back on. Ive tried every kernel...every new release...everything from tons of different devs...they all do it. The only one that doesnt do it is tiny's. But...tiny kernel doesnt multitask for me well. I get major lag backing out of apps...if I have mulitiple processes going on...its stalling too (UI at least). Honestly its gotten so annoying that It makes me want to throw my phone against the wall.

Yeah, they just didn't speed anything up for me. It was like when Microsoft puts yet another meaningless dialog between you and the setting you want to change.
The lock screen is baffling. The whole point of a lock screen is to lock the phone. Not provide another launcher. That, and it just behaves strangely.

About the SD card rant: done for multi user compatibility and you wont have an issue if you didn't wipe out the special file with your old recovery

actually i DID have an issue. I didnt wipe specific files with my old recovery. I did like I always do...wiped cache...factory reset..format system...flash new rom. 4.2 MOVES your current sdcard contents to /data/media on the rom I flashed....and not only did it move them there...it "blanked" them. All of my apks were not parsed properly...and all my jpgs were 0 byte files that were empty. Nandroid restore did not restore my pictures because it doesnt effect /data/media.....which is where the 4.2 flash moved my stuff in the first place. It turned my pics in to 0 byte files which were all still present...only they were empty files. Restore didnt fix it...twrp latest. Moving them back to /sdcard didnt fix it either.

I like it but opening the camera is kinda laggy and too slow for me. And also the messaging widget should be able to send the texts straight from the lockscreen instead of going into the messaging app first! But the idea of widgets on lock screen is pretty cool!

You've hit on the exact reason why the new lock screen is an improvement. Apparently you don't use any security on your lockscreen, but for those who do there was no way to get to your camera before. The new lockscreen may not be perfect, but it's a huge improvement.
Yep and I made a poll about this. Most people want to be able to disable it natively.

I never said it was recovery related. I'm stating what happened when I went to 4.2. How could you prove anything or what caused it. You weren't there. You haven't seen any data or logs. Yet you state your opinion as fact.
I'm stating my opinion of 4.2.+ is don't like the new features... at least not all. Multiple users is cool. Lock screen and quick settings sucks. I'm entitled to my opinion just as others who like it.
Anyone remember one of the original reasons for "locking" phones? To prevent accidental activation. This new lock screen bypass really opens up a hole there. It's not improbable that someone can start the camera and burn down their battery really fast.

I think the original reason was to prevent butt dialing. Nowadays with so much personal information on phones security is a major reason too. Accidentally running down the battery in the rare situation where your junk accidentally slides open the camera is not a serious concern in my book.

That's why there's new forms to lock your phone(pin, passwords, etc). You still can't get into the phone if you have it pin/password protected.
For the haters of the new lockscreen-
To clarify a bit with an example: I have my phone pin protected with the messaging widget. I can still see the texts I have in the messaging widget, but when I click to view one, it asks for my pin. Now, if I go to the camera app, if I swipe towards the right, I get a lock icon. If I click on Home, I get asked for my pin.
Now, what's the issue? Aside from just not liking a different implementation.
As for swiping up to get to Now, you still do that. The anchor is just a bit lower now.

But you can activate the phone. And you can bypass security.
Okay, there are two reasons to have a locking mechanism:
1) accidental activation
2) security
The rationale for #1 was largely "butt dialing". Today, instead of burning cell minutes and battery now you can just find yourself with a flat battery. You can now activate the phone without entering in a proper lock code. You can't bypass the security aspect of it but you can now burn down your battery rapidly by accidentally turning on the camera.
The rationale for #2 is to keep prying eyes away from your device and/or attempt to stop someone else from putting cell charges on your bill. But you can put widgets on the screen that display MMS and email.
It's like having two layers of locking. That in itself isn't terrible but what kills the idea is #1 above.

Home Screen / KFTVLauncher WAY too busy-looking now?!

after the latest update it feels like there is way too much stuff
nice that they added Music.
FreeTime, at first I got foolishly excited thinking: "even though this is for kids, it says 'you can add Your Apps' !!!" but then quickly realized the obvious: amazon's apps, not your own apps. duh.
but now it feels like there's just way too much junk sitting there.
it would be nice to be able to choose the order of the categories, and which categories to display (or not-display)
I don't think this will happen, because then the user won't constantly scroll past all those things to buy!
I've been happy with stock everything for a while - all I ever use is Plex and whatever free videos I've loaded. So basically I only ever use: Home, Watchlist, and Settings.
didn't want to bother with rooting or with llama / launcher.
hmmmm... actually... with rooting, there might be a way to change some of the KFTVLauncher display settings... if I get annoyed enough maybe I'll look at that.
Maybe someone can make an xposed mod for editing the selection menus so we can add,hide/remove,or reposition selections.
Of course the settings page will need to be made unable to hide or delete.
I want to at least hide all but home and settings so I can quickly access my apps by going down only once and without using as much memory since the other options would not take up extra RAM space.
Random question for anyone:Can I set up a SWAP file on my 32GB USB Mass Storage connected via Stickmount to gain serious performance?

I'm not sure what kind of boost you think you are going to get from swap. For one, USB storage is slower than molasses and for two, that's a great way to kill said usb storage device.

The problem with that is that it shows full screen ads without the notification there and you can't clear those.. So I have to keep the Macrodroid notification consistent

Oh ya, you're correct. I forgot about that because I've had my Weather app always have a notification on the lock screen.
Update: When messing around the Macros I found a way that you can hide the persistent Macrodroid notification along with Amazon Ads.
Videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCUhxGFJ8g0
So basically I added another 'Clear Notification' to MacroDroid in Macro 1,
and in Macro 2, I checked the override Macro creation box.
After that I went to MacroDroid Notification settings and checked to Force Hide the notification.
So basically now when I turn off the phone screen, I wait a few seconds and if I peek at the current running notifications using the Moto "Glance screen", you will see the MacroDroid notification, but as soon as I power on the screen, the MacroDroid notification as well as the Amazon AD dissapears and I am left with my background.
Anyone can explain why do I have such a lag after switching the phone on? Seems like it leaves some locking screen/widget/program (you can see that it shows time if you scroll down notification bar) and disappears only in several settings
Anyone tried of these methods to boot into recovery without unlocking bootloader? like fastboot boot recovery.img?
Alternative solutions?

This guide does not need root and uses macrodroid to cover up ads with something more useful. Was made for the Moto G4 but I don't see why it won't work here also LINK TO GUIDE
Check it out if you have an amazon version and report back!

I used Tasker with Notification Listener and achieved the same result. Sometimes, there is a lag so the ad may appear but it's gone before unlocking. Also, the persistent notification from Tasker removes the need to create a fake notification to prevent full-screen ads.
On a related note, has anyone tried using ADB commands to disable/remove the Amazon Offers app? I want to try it but don't know the necessary commands.

No haven't tried ADB or recovery. But if someone wants to try it go for it and please come back with results.

1. Can you share your details of how you set your Tasker to remove ads? I use Macrodorid but as i stated earlier sometimes it takes seconds to unlock that is totally inconvenient
2. do you mean this?
Code:
adb shell pm hide com.amazon.phoenix
Unfortunately this does not work ((
Code:
Error: java.lang.SecurityException: Neither user 2000 nor current process has android.permission.MANAGE_USERS.
but of course you can try it yourself...
BTW, there is one more solution for removing ads. If anyone can check - that would be good

1) To get Tasker to work correctly, I downloaded Notification Listener from here. Once both are installed, in Tasker under the Profile tab, I created an event that gets triggered when the display is on. The task that gets linked to this profile will launch the Notification Listener plugin. Then, I configured the listener to clear notifications based on the app name Amazon Offers (case sensitive).
2) Thanks for trying. It looks like we can't run this command without root.

1. Have you tried Macrodroid? Just wonder about comparison between Tasker and Macrodroid
2. Well if we have root, we would just delete Amazon Offers from the phone and that's it. This adb solution was meant to hide even without root, and id did work for G4 phones. Initially But then it seems to me they have closed this possibility with some update. And also for G5 phones from the very beginning
When I was thinking about possible solutions one idea came to my mind. What if we try to flash Amazon phones with stock Moto G5 firmware? Will it give any error (because of locked bootloader and probably different hashes of the Amazon and Stock Moto firmwares)? Any thoughts?

I mean if u go to best buy and show them the prime deal they'll match it. I just did it 2 days ago. I'd post the photo of receipt as proof, but XDA won't let me attach it. Then you'll have then ad free version for $239

We do not have such shops in my country
Best buy didn't let me price match the Amazon ad variant because they said that variant isn't eligible compared with their variant. And using NotiEDA combined with Macrodroid seemed to go the trick.
Sooooo theres a permanent way to get rid of them and not have to use an app for it. I just found it on the Moto G subreddit.
I literally just did it. It DID get rid of all the amazon ads, which is less running in the background too!!
I'm using the 64gb Moto G5 plus amazon variant. It also gets rid of the need for a second finger print for the lock screen. You don't need to do it twice to get to the home screen anymore, just once like a non ad version!!!!
It's the top post in the subreddit right now. I can't link it, some bot won't let me
EDIT: I will put the instructions
Moderator Edit:
The solution has already been covered here:

Edit2: the above is the one who found it but the one who posted it to the subreddit that this forum wouldn't let me link to are one in the same. I did mention the thread so sorry if anyone thinks I didn't give proper credit.
YOU MADE MY DAY!!!! AWESOME! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Tutorial: Workaround for Missing Notification LED by Always on Edge

Disclaimer: I am not Responsible for Burns on your gorgeous Amoled display or the Nuclear war triggered or your anything using by my guide.
As we have the Notification Led ditched by Sammy, we have a few alternatives. However, I have somewhat mimicked the missing features through Always On Edge.
Play Store Link: (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.used.aoe
I can understand that this has already been discussed, my purpose of this thread is to Guide you an effective configuration of the AOE app. Many people find the app difficult to configure as this is like a "One Page Website" containing almost all the options in the same place, therefore looking messy. Also, this app have several bugs yet I found this most reliable yet.
I don't claim any credit for the App.
Steps:
Please disable dear Samsung's Edge Light feature OFF.
Disable Window and Transition Animation off in Dev Settings if you don't like AOE flickering statusbar during notification reminder.
Install Always on Edge from the play store link above.
Go to AOE settings, Give the app necessary Permission.
Exclude the app from being battery optimized.
On How/When to Light section, select your preferences. In "When Notification Comes", select your apps to notify and set your preferred colour.
Turn Reminder on for 8 seconds in every 16 seconds.
On Edge Style, Select Stable (This helps reduce battery drain).
Check Adjust brightness, keep it at mid range or as you prefer.
On How to Close, select Double Tap to Close.
Now, on Enable Edge Lighting, keep it enabled, Select around Notch only. On the notch support settings, select Adjust manually and select the values 55,0,15,10, Right > 120 respectively.
This will make a smaller notification LED like light above the notch. We usually don't use that area so, it should be absolutely fine. With these settings, you get a working notification LED alternative.
I hope this helps a lot of us. These settings are my personal preference at this moment. I am also looking into Chainfire's Holey Light but that thing is a baby and drains battery plus does not notify when on battery and screen is off. So, I shall wait till other alternatives are available.

Why wouldn't you add this to the thread that already exists about this app?
I can understand that this app has been already talked about but why I made this thread is so that more people can get the guide easily and it does not get lost in the conversation. If moderators think it's duplicate and wish, they may merge it with the other thread.
Hi.
If I want to set it for missed calls and messages, what I have to select? Thanks
This is a proper location for this guide. It's where most users come to look for something like this. Look at the title of this section: "Guides, News, & Discussions"...
Leave it here, where it belongs.
And many thanks to the OP.

For missed calls select the Phone app.
For voice mail messages, select your visual voicemail app.
For SMS messages, select your Messages app.
This app doesnt work properly for me, it only shows notification around camera ring after i wake the screen, whats the point of it than?
Not to mention often there is like overlay over regular losckreen so i need to unlock twice, it comes over fingeprint area so i cant directly unlock phone from screen off.
Reinstalled it 3 times already just to see if im crazy or not and redid from scratch following 100% guide from youtube or net.
What im doing wrong here or it works like that for all?
@ivicask,
I can't tell you what you're doing wrong, but it's not supposed to work like that. On my phone it notifies me as soon as a new message notification arrives. Try experimenting with some of the options. And read all the notices that the developer put in the app.

Can you check if the "Screen is Off" is selected in the when a notification comes section. Also, did you disable Edge Lighting?
These are my settings and it works perfectly fine and the notification light stays on until I dismiss it. The red circled area is what needs to be changed to leave the notification light on until you dismiss it.
In the last screenshot, you scroll down through that list to select the apps you want a notification light for. Whenever you install a new app on your phone it gets automatically check off in that list. Just something to remember.
In addition whenever you make a change you have to hit save at the bottom.
This setup also works with Samsung stock AOD.

I wish people would stop recommending this app. I have had 0 success in using it and having it work as intended. I have tried your settings, and once again this does not work for me; When I get a notification, the screen lights up, shuts off, and there is no indication that a message has arrived. There are like 3 threads on this particular program that also offer suggestions on how to get the program to "work".
Yes, Edge lighting has been disabled. I even went a step further and rebooted the phone, then installed the app. Used your settings, as well as the other settings that have been suggested and I have the same outcome, I just don't get it. I am sure that atleast 100 of the reported downloads are form me trying to get this app to work LOL.
I appreciate your time to try to explain how you managed to get the app to work, but is not reliable imho, and I really wish it were
I just use the AOD, as much as I hate it, it's about the only reliable way to know that a notification has arrived.

I understand your frustration. But this app works as intended for some of us, and fills our needs. Those of us who are satisfied will continue to recommend it....
Look around. There are currently 4 devs with competing apps in the S10 forum. I'd suggest you try a couple of them and let us know if you find something that works better.

What are the other apps? I would love to try anything that would give me a working notification indicator.
You and I have a vastly different expectation when it comes to "working as intended". If it did work as intended, all of us would be able to have this app function correctly.
I also find it very convoluted and bloated. When creating a UI for any app, you should use the "user is drunk method". Meaning even if a person were intoxicated, they should be able to use the app. But that is neither here nor there.
I appreciate what the developer has done, I just haven't been able to accomplish the task at hand.

You will find threads for the other apps in the S10 (not here in S10+) "Themes, apps, and Mods" section.
FWIW, I agree with your comments about the UI.

I also have had the same problem. I normally used double tap to wake. It is however, present in this app.
Select double tap to close this app. And just use the fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. It works. I have been using this.
About the Bloated UI of the app, I also agree with all of you. I also contacted the developer on this. He said he will look into this once the app become more stable.
Those, who could not get this app working, I'm sure there is some settings of your phone that are contradicting. For examplen if a notification wakes up the screen, this app will not notifiy. Moreover, yes, I have been using this app as my daily driver now. It does not disappoint me. I have used all the other apps available, Holey Light, Arc Lighting. None works as it should. They works as mentioned by the dev but those features are not the feature an LED-holic person is looking for. Holey Light cannot notify when not being charged. Arc notification ridiculously asks me to watch ad for every hour I use the app.
I am not being paid by the app developer to spread the words. I am spreading the word because it works for me and it SHOULD work for you also as we share the same device. There must be some conflicting app or settings. If anyone needs help settings this up, I would love to help.
