"phone is not responding" error... - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Just today I am suddenly unable to transfer files from my laptop to my phone. I can pull files off the phone onto the laptop, and I can see both the internal and external cards on the phone but when I try to copy a file over the laptop gives an error and says the card is no responding. I tried to copy to both internal and external and its the same error. Any ideas why it suddenly flipped out?

Are you using a USB cable or a card reader

I'm using the official samsung cable. I haven't changed anything other than the kernel for my ROM, could that affect it in any way? I could understand better if my PC just couldn't see my phone or if it was just the external card or if it would let me access the cards but I can pull things off both cards, just can't copy into either.

You new kernel may not be allowing Remount to RW for USB Debug.

[Q] USB and SD not recognized

Need a way to access internal memory so I can fix my usb or sd card see following for information:
Short Version:
USB wont work and SD card wont work so I cannot use the following method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
Long Version:
So right after i had backed up my rom i did a wipe, then the phone stopped recognizing my sd card. I took it to Sprint they couldn't figure it out, so i was stuck in Bootloader. yesterday i did a hard reset and wa-la i can now use my phone ...sorta. It will turn on I can access everything, but it freezes up and shuts off after 40 seconds (i got it to stay for 2mins one time) also it still will not recognize my sd card. I tried other cards still no luck and I know my card works because I can use it in my laptop. So i did a little searching on xda and found a fix, but i cant do the fix unless i plug my phone into the laptop and run a cmd prompt well now here is the other problem my computer sees the phone (listed as My HTC) but my phone wont recognize that it is plugged in. It will charge when it is shut off thats about it. Well back to xda and there is a fix for the usb, but.... I need my phone to recognize my sd card because the files will be on it. In short to fix my sd card i need usb and to fix the usb i need my card I am stuck in a horrible loop, so what I need is a way to access my phones internal memory so I can install the usb files on it so that i can fix usb then my card, then recover my rom.
Thanks to wall who help or at least try
Im not totally sure if this will help, but i know you can mount the sd card as usb storage in Amon_Ra and also in settings under "storage" or so i believe there are settings for mounting and unmounting the Micro Sdcard check those, it should be mounted in the settings for your phone to see it. hope i helped
I just had this exact same problem. Nandroid, wipe, flash, then stuck in bootloader spent two days trying fixes, unroot, root, and,had to turn it in. Luckily best buy has an awesome warranty.

thanks all... ended up replacing my phone, but if anyone ever finds a way to fix it let me know! Thanks again
I was really hoping that this thread would not dead-end. I've got what sounds like a similar issue...in addition to not being able to reformat my SD card (in Windows or in Android) due to it being detected as write-protected, but it's not write protected.
I'm really anxious to try the aforementioned thread to fix USB and SD, but I can't detect, mount, or format my SD card. Am I screwed?
*EDIT* Fixed the write-protection issue...working on the rest now.
*EDIT* Still can't format card through Android. Is there an ADB or fastboot command to format the SD card?

[Q] SD card no longer recognised in windows

I can no longer access my SD card from my windows pc when connected by USB. This occurred on the same day that i unlocked my bootloader, installed the java sdk and android sdk.
I have the phone set MSC (mass storage mode) and connect it by USB as I always did in the past.
Windows recognises that something is connected and a new removable drive is created.
In the past my phone would give me the option to connect the memory card, however this no longer happens.
Clicking on the new drive in Windows causes a message box to pop up saying "Please insert a disk in drive..."
No amount of fiddling with usb settings (debugging, MTP, etc) plugging / unplugging or rebooting has made any difference. I've tried reinstalling USB drivers and removing & reinstalling Sony PC companion. I've also tried accessing the sd card from ubuntu in a virtual machine, but that also doesn't work.
I can view the SD cards contents from my phone and through an adb link.
Does anyone have a solution? From extensive googling, the only things i can see that i haven't tried is:
- trying a different cable (which has been suggested but sounds pretty daft to me)
- reformatting the sd card
Any other suggestions? If i do have to format the sd card, are there any good guides or is there anything i need to avoid doing???
Can you read the card from a card reader.
if you can it is then either drivers or the cable

unfortunately i don't have a card reader. I'll give it a try tonight in my girlfriend's phone and with a usb cable and see how that works out.
it will definitely work with a card reader...this problem occurs when usb storage suddenly stops working as soon as usb is connected..i guess best way is to reinstall ROM if the problem persist.
Flashing firmware (global v62) got it working again )

Transfering Files Off Phone Problems

i downloaded a bunch of tv shows threw them on my SD card while it was in the note. i get home and go to transfer them from the phone to the computer and after a few seconds i get an error "A device attached to the system is not functioning" what the hell, ive never had this issue on any phone. ok so i thought it might have been my 16gb SD card doing this but it seems every SD card i try keeps giving this error and locking me out of the SD card unless i disconnect and reconnect. anyone else having this problem or know how i can fix it?
If you have an SD Card reader try with that. If not a different USB Cable or possibly a different computer. Did you just get that particular SD Card which fails to connect?
getting an SD card reader defeats the point, i dont want to constanly rip the back off my phone to take the SD card out, my issue is every time i plug the phone in it is recognized and i can see the SD card or the internal storage. ill go and try transfering a file from either storage areas and it gives me a transfer error mid way through, it has done this on 3 different computers with 5 different usb cables, its something to do with the dumb MTP storage crap, anyone know a way i can fix this problem? help please

The suggestion was you try with a card reader to make sure it's not the card itself that may be bad. Several machines ans cables and still no luck may just say "the card is bad".

Or try AirDroid from the Google Play Market. Uses wifi.
Also, some sd cards have poor factory formatting.
For each of my sd cards, I always do a full, non-quick, format, before I use it.
thanks but no its not memory card, or cable related, its poor drivers by samsung, the internet is full of people complaining about this issue with allot of the newer samsung phones. i finally got it to work after spending a few hours installing and uninstalling drivers and countless reboots

Please tell me how you got it right? Ive been struggling with this thing for so long and its such a hangup powering off the phone to take out the sd card!
No issues here, and I've been using the same drivers as my GS2 did. Did you try USB Mass Storage mode?
From my experience my computer will see my card on and off when it was formatted to xfat but after reformatting it to fat32 as soon as i plug my phone in it will automatically detect my card without installing or changing drivers.

Transferring files to SD Card (External) - error messages?

Hi,
For some reason I've been unable transfer files to my (external) SD Card while it's installed in my S3 and connected via USB. I always get an error message (on Windows).
I always have to pull the Micro-SD card out and connect it via a card reader on my PC.
Anyone else encounter the same issue.
I'm using Windows 7.
I could post screen-caps of the error messages later if needed.
Are you able to transfer files to and from the internal storage of the S3?

When you are attempting to transfer files are you dragging the file to the phone storage or external? When you drag the file over your phone it should auto open a dropdown that has phone and then SD card or external card. Also are you on a bootcamped Mac running Windows 7? Mac will throw those errors unless you copy the file from your Mac partition to your Windows partition.
Just to knock the easy ones out of the way... USB debugging enabled, drivers installed for MTP?
Can you post the error message please?
And no the irony isn't lost on me that I own a macbook pro and have a member ID poking fun at Apple. I'm a full Android convert. I love my macbook though...

Transferring Files from PC to Phone

Anyone else having the issue where they can't transfer files from their Win 10 PC to the phone? I have it set to File Transfer mode when I plug it in via USB into the computer. When I pull it up in File Explorer, it says "Phone". Double clicking it shows my MicroSD card and the internal storage. Then when I try to click and drag or Ctrl-C Ctrl-V a file into either spots, nothing happens. I did try enabling USB Debugging mode, but that's not required for a simple file transfer. This is honestly kinda ridiculous. Also, when I'd take my MicroSD and move files from windows to it by connecting it to a USB adapter, the files transfer onto the card, but as soon as I plug it into the phone, all those files disappear in the file explorer and are replaced with a file or folder called System Volume Information. Anyone else having issues??
Nope have copied files from what's app for printing and copied my music to phone storage and external memory card as well,

I had no issues using the steps you used. I just grabbed my USB-c to USB cable for charging my old oneplus, and it worked.
I used Bluetooth to transfer a few files from my PC to my phone. It worked great
Bluetooth works, plugging in phone (sd card formatted as internal storage), and Teamviewer works. I think I might use Teamviewer as it's similar to a ftp client program, makes it real easy.
What did you format the sd card as? Internal or external storage?

Same here.
For normal files and documents i just use Google Drive, i don't have huge important files i need to have when i am out and about so i am unable to test this as i haven't had a need to plug my phone into a pc for 2-3 years.
Bluetooth would work or an SD Card reader, as there are so many ways to get files between a pc and a phone without a cable its partly why ive not even bother to check the does my phone work with my pc step. Back in the days when you got Software and Drivers for your phone are a thing of the past.
I using wi-fi to transfer files you can easily find an app for that

Which app are you using?
Heya, chiming in here to suggest Airdroid...look it up, useful and needs no plugging in, just used your WiFi networks to do the transfer, very useful tool (I,d like to thank YouTubes Mr Mobile ((Michael Fisher)) for that)
No problem here also...I just use my GoPro5 Type-C Cable with my Razer, and Copy and Paste in Windows Explorer....easy. I recommend you try another cable
Using an anker "normal" usb to usb c cable works fine to transfer files. But I can only transfer files to the SD card, internal storage doesn't appear.
For transfer via WiFi I use es file explorer, it connects fine to windows shares even with needed auth
