My note 10.1 2014 seems to go to sleep randomly. I will be in the middle of doing something... typing, reading, etc... and suddenly it will just go black. It then Wales normally from the lockscreen. Has anyone encountered this before? Clean room with either bindroid or stock kernel does it. I am not sure whether the stock room did it. I think not but I can't say with total certainty.
You should try to find out if it is a software or hardware issue. It could be a power button with a loose contact or a damaged board. I for example had my 7.7 gtab turn of randomly, I opened it up and switched it on and disconnected the power button, it still rebooted randomly. Then i switched it on and disconnected the board with the powerbutton and camera while it was on and it stayed on. I knew it was hardware related because it got wet, replacing the damaged board fixed the issue. What I want to say is: By backtracing to the actual cause of the issue you will be able to narrow it down and we might be able to help.

Thanks. I have not been able to get the issue to repeat itself consistently at all yet so I have not narrowed it down. I thought there might be a known issue of some kind. Failing that I will have to keep fiddling with it until I get a sense of what if anything actually trips it.
Thanks for the reply.
Hmm, I am exploring the possibility that my case has some magnets in it that I didn't know about, and when folded over it's tripping the automatic sleep. This looks like a promising line of investigation... I know I previously saw an image showing where the magnet sensors are on this device. Can anyone point me to it? I can't feel any magnets in the case but if I know where to look I may get luckier.

Hi, I have a little concern about the galaxy nexus randomly shutting off, when the phone bumps a little it just shuts off, so minor drops just shuts off the phone anyone having this issue? and is this hardware or software issue?
Thanks in advance
I haven't had the issue. Have you taken the back of to see if the battery is seating properly?
It sounds hardware related.

I have the same problem. I initially had trouble turning on my phone. Then noticed the problem with battery isn't seated well or making contact well. I had to press the battery down using my fingers in order to turn it on. And once in a while I'll randomly shut off. I just got the phone two days ago. Will be sending it back to Google for replacement.

Had the same issue, did some digging around the net and found a thread on Android Central that covered this issue and found the problem. Take a look at this video:
I only watched the first few minutes until I replicated the issue a few times, and then found a simple fix: took a clean cloth and wiped the battery pins on the phone and the same on the battery itself. Tried the same tapping test, no problems whatsoever.
If you guys aren't as lucky, I'd definitely try to get it warrantied out.
Thanks

Thank you, I tried this and it works. After cleaning the pins using a cloth and a pin I no longer have the problem :good:
I tried folding some paper against my battery to press it against the contacts more but this did not work for me at all. What worked for me was spraying the insides of the contacts with some deoxidation spray. This completely fixed my problem. Even though the contacts are gold, it seems like they are not simple leaf springs but rather contain some other spring mechanism? I believe this is what corroded and was causing my problems. It's lame that Samsung didn't put enough power buffering capacitors into the phone's power supply to handle momentary power disconnects. My experience with samsung products is that even though no corners were cut in their construction, there are numerous little design mistakes and poor sourcing of parts.
A few weeks ago in las Vegas I noticed that my phones screen was not turning on after being out in the heat.
I rebooted etc etc but the real problem was just that the phone itself was awake and running, but pressing the power button would light up the capacitive buttons but no screen.
I could even swipe to open the phone and feel the vibration of it opening, answer calls by guessing and swiping etc.
The phone would be fine after it cooled down.
Now I'm back in a normal weather city and it's still happening.
Even just being in my pocket... It needs to be cooled down a little or no screen.
Doesn't seem like it matters but;
Cm7
No custom kernels at least not that I ever Installed
I only did the agps fix in terms of mods.
I guess I'm screwed since I'm over the year warranty. Any ideas?

I should point out that in use the extended battery.

Would really like some advice here. Moving to a new device is not ideal but if this is hardware what choice would I have as I'm out of warranty...

Try flashing a different ROM, see if it happens in the bootloader or recovery... I'm thinking hardware issue, if those don't fix it then it definitely is.

thanks, i will try it.
I had the kang versiion of CM9 but it was a giant fail on my device. Maybe because I did not flash a new kernel, but regardless it just did not work well.
I may try and go stock, just to see what happens, and if I can stomach sense anymore.
Hardware issue!
I had this happen to a different phone of mine. The heat actually started to make the glue holding the screen and connectors in melt away, so the screen kept going in and out. The screen and touch digitilizer are different. You may still feel feedback but the screen just isnt powering on! Try opening your phone and looking inside to see if the connections are still nice and tight. Usually its like a ribbon cable sort of thing holding everything in place.

Awesome! I installed paranoid android and aside from a few errors its been slightly better.
I think though that I will get a service manual somewhere online and take it apart and try and clean it out.
Most electronics I've owned in las Vegas have had overheating issues so I am not surpised this happened to the phone as well

I am facing an issue with the touch screeen on my one v.... scrolling on the touch screen causes inadvertent clicking of app shortcuts ... this happens only occasionally and most of the time the screen works fine.... sometimes the phone goes haywire and likes to start every app available on the screen at the time.... any guesses to what this could be... this problem started about a month after buying the phone
anyone?

If you use a 3rd party cable and/or charger it can cause this error, when plugged in. Other that it is digitizer malfunction probably.

thanks for the reply ,
I dont use any 3rd party accessories..
would a digitizer malfuction cause this problem to appear only occasionally?
Try just touching your stove when phone is acting up with your free hand or the water faucet even.
I'm wondering if you're building up a load of static electricity and causing it yourself inadvertently.
Long shot, but worth knowing an ruling out.

Can static electricity really cause this? I tried what you suggested but it did not help when the phone was acting up.
Twas a long shot that it might be building a surface charge on the phone, sorry it didn't help.

It can, but really unlikeley. Stacic charge discharges quite quicly, so it will be a second for the phone to recover from it.
The most possible problem I think will be at the digitizer chip. It is earthed, an protected by a farraday-cage (i think at least), but if the galvan connection is out (means it is not soldered in place good), the phones electro-magnetic field can cause malfunction. I'm not in posession of a detailed blueprint so I don't know how it is earthed. If the phone is stock as it can be (so not unlocked) try the service.
I happened to have this error in my former Samsung Galaxy Spica, but it was a software error first, then the digitizer itself gave in, but changed it, it works even now.
Hi everyone,
My phone seems convinced that I'm pressing the volume down key occasionally, but I'm not.
I'll miss calls, the battery will be emptied faster as the screen keeps coming on, and it has prevented me from being able to boot the phone.
It's not physically stuck, and I've even now just replaced the main board flex cable part.
edit2: I think the power key is also being "pressed" since the screen is coming one, but the volume isn't being changed. So I'm now thinking I replaced the wrong part maybe. So confused.
There's a chance of some water damage, through rain and sweat (after using it to record my runs), but it's not been dunked in beer or any of the usual causes.
Is there anything else physical that I might be able to fix (or just wiggle)?
Is it possible this is a software issue somehow?
Any advice will be much appreciated, this is so far beyond any warranty I'll do anything.
(edit: I have seen the other similar questions, but none had an answer)
Are you sure this is a hardware problem? Have you tried factory reset? Install a new ROM may be..
Am certain.
Anyway, it's too late, now sold (as faulty) on ebay.

Same issue was with me when my desire fell in some water. Optical joy pad was broken..... I got it replaced and phone was normal again.......the faulty joy pad was sending unknown signals which were being interpreted as volume down.......and also, whenever I pressed power button once or twice, phone restarted...... It was all fixed after the repair....

So my galaxy nexus keeps waking up by itself. The times it does it varies. I've seen a lot of other people have had the problem but no fix.
Any help? It's driving me insane!
Is it plugged in when it does this?
No.
Do you have an app installed that wakes the phone with the proximity sensor? That happened to me before. lol
Again, no. A lot of people have had the problem but i haven't seen a fix yet.
Well its hard to pinpoint the problem obviously without experiencing it. Thats why I ask questions first. It could very well be the screen itself screwing up. I can't really say. Its hard to determine a hardware or software related problem over the internet. If nothing works, I'd say reset your phone to a brand new state and if it continues, you have a hardware issue.
EDIT: Another possibility, your power button.
I had this issue before. But it disappeared when i moved to 4.2.2 kernel. No idea what was causing it down to this very day. I had just given up completely. I tried everything, full wipe. Back to stock, installing with no apps. Couldn't solve it. Then all of the sudden with 4.2.2 it was gone.

Try disabling "wake up when in charge"
maybe could be a problem to usb port
Screen wakes up when not connected through USB
Hello,
I'll use this thread instead of starting a new one since I'm having the same issue.
My GSM Galaxy Nexus is running the stock Android 4.2.1 (JOP40D.I9250XWMA2).
Starting a few days ago, I noticed that the screen wakes itself when it's not connected to a power source through the USB port. Also, the battery icon often shows it's charging even when it's not connected to a power source.
I didn't install any new applications. Could it be some application update?
How can I investigate whether it's a software or hardware issue?
Thanks for any hint.

Sounds like a hardware problem. What you're describing is exactly what I experienced, had my USB port replaced under warranty to get rid of it (I believe it's fairly easy to do yourself as well).
Solution
I used to have the same problem, the solution is to flash another ROm, my phone used to think it's charging when it wasn't, it used to boot up automatically even though i switched it off, the solution which worked for me was to switch my ROM or Re-flash the current one.
I had the same issue when the USB-inlet was greasy, dirty and messed up.
Thanks guys for the tips.
It stopped doing this since last night when I tried backing up data and running the Cyanogenmod Installer for Windows that came out recently.
Now that the Nexus Root Toolkit successfully managed to have the phone recognized by Windows again, I'll give it another try.
I expected this to be a bit involved, but didn't know I'd still be at it two days later :-/
it is your usb port
To the OP and all gnex owners with similar problem, you don't need to install/reinstall roms or anything. it's most likely the pin in your usb port. make sure the port is clean and dry, because if it is wet the pin shorts to the inner side and turns the screen on as if your phone is charging. if it is dry and yet your screen keeps turning on, then most likely the pin has become bent and is touching/shorting to the inner side. Get a thin knife or flat screwdriver, and use the point to VERY GENTLY straighten it back to the middle. Read more on this: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39625
the solution is in post #161. (see how most later posts confirm the solution.) I had this too, and solved it with a point of small knife. hope this helps.
Agreed with the guy above, one of the possibilities is the charging port problem, some claimed that changing a new port doesn't not help. That made me moved to another phone.
