Hello all,
I am looking for some advice on the SPIGEN Screen Protector Steinheil (Ultra Fine or SQ Crystal Clear). My main concern is too keep the spen as precise as possible, as if im using it bareback. I have seen the Zagg Invis on some of my friends and tried it and I just dont like the drag, rubbery feeling and scratch like marks it leaves.
If it helps I do alot of art work and sketches, i just can't drag a Cintiq around.
Any thoughts would be great.

I have the Spigen SPG Ultra Fine. The install was easy. I do screen installs in my bathroom with the shower on hot so that the humidity is up. It prevents dust from floating in the air.
The screen went on easily, smoothed out easily, and looks great. The smudge / finger print resistance is great so far and the pen works with no issue aside from the traces of what you wrote being left on the shield. It wipes off though.
But you can definitely see what I'd call a chalk-like outline on the screen after using the pen so regularly cleaning will be necessary with this shield.
I have a ultra fine on my n7k and its nice. Held up good so far 8 months down the road. .

it's definitely less rubbery than Zagg, if you don't like any drag, change your wacom pen nib to the pure white one. It's dam smooth with it.
The ultra fine isnt even close to zagg in the way it feels....

As meticulous as I am, I made all precautions for adhering the Spigen Clear protector. Cleaned my surroundings in the bathroom, washed my hands, Steamed the room with fogged mirrors, and closed door and STILL static and dust particles!! The more I tried, the more dust there was! I gave up about a half hour later with about 30 dust particles under the protector. Plus, those small adhesive strips they provide to a terrible job in removing dust from the back side of the protector. Years ago, I bought a Boxwave protector for my GF's Sony Clie TH55. Obviously a smaller screen, but no problem what so ever and NO precautions necessary. $22 down the drain which is too much for a piece acetate with adhesive. Probably cost pennies to make. The printing and assembly of the product box probably cost more.
For big screens like this one, you guys should get wet apply protectors.
I got Xtremeguardz, and they're amazing. No dust, and I switched the pen tip to one of the plastic one so there's no residue and it flows smoothly.

Thanks, if Spigen sends out an other one free of charge, then I'll take further precautions like wearing a hazmat suite IN the shower.
Just an update:
I went ahead and purchased the Ultra Crystal and the Ultra Fine. Both were very easy to apply I just followed this video on youtube. Since I cant post links just search this in youtube "Installation And Review Of Steinheil Screen Protector Galaxy Tab 10.1".
I applied the Ultra Fine on a Galaxy Tab and the Ultra Crystal on my Galaxy Note 10.1 both with ease.
To follow up the results of my original question about possible spen scratch marks.
Ultra Crystal: The black nib left no signs of scratch marks, though there was slight resistance.
Ultra Crystal: The white nib felt smooth and similar to bareback. But when I turned off the Note, I noticed marks everywhere. I tried to wipe it off and had no luck. Dissapointed at this point I tried to do more research on my desktop to find another screen protector. Approximately 30 minutes later I come back to my Note and lo' and behold the spen scratch marks were gone. I don't know if the protector has some self healing property but it is certainly different from the Zagg I have seen on my friends were the marks stayed.
As for fingerprints, the Ultra Crystal does pick up prints, were the Ultra Fine does not.
Codeflight, what's the quality of the ultra fine one like? I believe it is anti-glare or matte, so does it pixellate the screen or make it harder to read in any way? Must you turn up the brightness to compensate?
I got the ultra-fine (matte) a couple days ago and I'm pretty happy with it. I found the solid white plastic s-pen tip works much better than the black tip, and I've yet to notice any marks or scratches after a couple days of solid note taking. Like any matte screen protector, it diminishes the sharpness of the screen somewhat and requires a slight bump in brightness to compensate, but I read a lot of pdfs and the reduction in glare is worth it to me. I haven't noticed any pixelation or grain effect.

Beetmonger has already posted, I have had similar experiences with the Ultra Fine, so in addition to your question about brightness, Yes I do have to turn up brightness a couple of notches.

Yes. I can confirm that.
Using ultra crystal. Slightly more rubbery but love it after i change to the white pen nib.

Does the ultra fine affects the sensor, since there is no hole for it?
Sigh. I think I'm just too sensitive. I found the Ultra Fine unbearably scratchy. I just installed the Crystal and it still feels pretty different from the bare screen. It's definitely rubbery, and whenever my stylus catches any dust particle it feels like I'm scratching sand onto the screen. Plus sometimes it even squeaks! Maybe I just can't have a protector if I'm using a stylus. I'm waiting for a Just Like Glass protector for my new Nexus 7, and if the stylus works on it I might just try one for the Note.

Been using this for 3 days and I'm very satisfied with it:
How it feels - It feels like touching a regular paper but smoother.
Spen tip - White tip
Big improvement: I can put my palm on the screen without zooming in on the note, I guess my palm slides a little on the glass surface causing it to zoom.
Screen doesn't look as dirty because of the finger prints.
Can read longer because the screen isn't too bright and glare is greatly reduced.
Overall I like it because it feels like writing on a paper rather than glass. I'm not really a fan of writing on glass and since I was little I've been writing on paper ^_^v

Well I finally got my Ultra Fine and all I can say is wow. I had moko screen protector before and I've felt it restrict my fingers from doing swipes and forget about the spen. I took that moko screen off my note after 30 minutes from installation. The end result with any screen protector is subjective, but I do urge you guys to try Ultra Fine.
Install: Easy if you follow the directions. Orient your note "portrait" so the camera/sensor would be on your left side and the charging port will be on your right. clean with provided solution and towel. Peel off about 1~2 inches. Align it close to the edge from top and peel halfway let the screen protector adhere it self. double check for any dust particle then proceed installing to the rest of the tablet. Squeeze out the bubbles and check for dust particles. I had 1 dust particle and used the supplied tape to lift the edge and another tape to get the dust. So let me say it again. only peel off the backing halfway to reduce dust particle from getting between the screen and protector.
Spen - use the white tip and don't need to press to hard to write ^_^ it feels good writing.
Brightness compensation - Very Subjective. I like mine with cool feeling so that means dimmer.
Fingerprints - Reduced greatly.
I'll update with images.
The Ultra Fine sound amazing for stylus/art use; But how lacking is the visual quality of watching movies on netflix and such? I heard the brightness/sharpness is slightly degraded. I was wondering if you'd even notice after maxing out the the brightness? I don't normally do screens but this tablet is so awesome. Want to keep it that way.
So... screen protectors... are they actually any use?
Do they protect from scratches? Or do they just make your device harder to use because the screen loses sensitivity?

I recommend using screen protectors because
- they prevent the glass from getting scratches. Sand scratches glass easily. Screen protector helps.
- they can reduce glare from screen. Glare is the reflection you see on the screen that makes it much harder to see what's on screen.
- they can be cleaned with lesser care... any slight wet cloth can clean screen
- they don't cause any loss of sensitivity
- you can start using the plastic nib for the spen as it lasts much longer than rubber nibs. And having a screen protector gives a much better experience with plastic tips for spen.
- they are damn cheap. Don't like them... no problem.. throw them

I went all out & picked up an Invisishield at BB. Yes, it was about $30.00 (-minus 20% for Rewards club event) but is was worth it in my mind & I will be doind the same with my Nexus 10. I really like the frogz type protectors, but the Invishield is really starting to grow on me as they are nearly impossible to damage. I have had it gouged to hell & in a warm environment after a few hours it always "heals itself". It is a bit tacky feeling (tacky sticky, not tacky cheap), so it is a bit hard or weird to get used to at first, but then you learn to touch lightly & all is well. Like stated above, the plastic S-Pen tip is MUCH better for use with screen savers, especially this type, but the device works just as well with the S-Pen without any loss of sensitivity.

I don't use a screen protector and frankly I don't see the need to.
The only advantage I see is the reduction in glare and even that depends on which screen protector you bought.
They DO cause a reduction in sensitivity, I have used a couple before on other devices (like my Note Phablet) and have thrown them all away.
A microfiber cloth cleans easily, and I use the plastic nib SPen HEAVILY and there are no scratches.
If you are paranoid though, then by all means. There are pretty cheap ones available
I always install a screen protector because it cuts down on finger prints. Last 3 have been Ghost Armour. They don't drag on your finger/S-Pen like the invisible shield or feel spongy. Also, clear like glass. And lifetime warranty.
All my gadgets have screen protectors. Better safe than sorry. Have protector on my note as well and no difference on using stylus at all. Smooth and write the same as without screen protector. I have anti glare kind and so easy to take care of finger prints as well. Overall I would highly recommend to get one.

It's good to see that lots of you find that they don't cause problems in using them; the last time I bought one I found that it did cause a loss of accuracy on the device I was using - but that was a few years ago and I am sure that the technology will have moved on.

Hi, I am getting a note 10.1 and want a carbon fibre blue ghost armour for it, would it affect the accuracy or will it scrape of what , thanks in advance!!!

I recently applied the MinGuard Anti-Glare screen protector and my default stylus is acting strange. Don't know if it's the protector or the stylus. After installing the protector, I immediately changed to the white nib which glides better than the one.
But when clicking on buttons(not swiping) using the stylus, the tablet does not react sometimes. Takes several tries to successfully click on a button. It doesn't matter how hard I press, the angle in which I press, or how long I press. Now, when I use my finger to click on a button, it works as it should.
For instance, when I bring up the Task Manager and click with the stylus between Ram Manager and Active Appllications" the tablet does not react many times. Or even if I try to click the "X" to close the Task Manager, it takes many times to close. Or if I click the buttons in Snote to change my pen tip, it takes many times to bring it up. This issue doesn't occur all buttons.... I can click on the system buttons in the lower left no problem or app buttons.
Do you guys think the screen protector is the culprit? Or bad stylus? Thanks so much.
I THINK I found the issue. It was the magnets in my book cover. When I position the flap(which contains the magnets) out of the way, it works much better...but not perfect. so I think the protector takes away from stylus sensitivity a bit. Magnets effecting the stylus was discussed in this thread: S-Pen Inaccurate
I recieved this one yesterday that I got from Amazon:

It took me both supplied protectors to really apply what I consider almost perfect. I believe there are like 2-3 really small dust particles near the camera but I didn't want to risk ruining my 2nd attempt. I applied it last night. No issues at all with my pen or screen. Mine has the white tip on. I decided on this particular product because it's clear and had great reviews. Glad I chose this one and better safe than sorry for my screen, but to each their own.

Hi cama-cama. Read my post above yours. I pasted the one I ordered off Amazon. It was easy to apply. I have had NO issues with my pen. I wrote this reply with my pen.
There really is no point in using a screen protector for this tablet. Just get a flip case, don't be stupid with your tablet, and bam, no scratches, ever.

You can be guaranteed to see micro scratches after a couple months without a screen protector. Your choice.
For those who have one installed or have tried them, which would be better? And which would work better with the pen input?
I moved from a clear screen to matte protector.
Both work with spen input. No difference for me... maybe an artist can tell u any finer differences.
Picking between matte and clear is your choice... google for pros/cons of each and see which works in your usage scenario.

Oh ok, that is good, no difference then. I went with clear, it has always been what I have used, no distortion in picture, it may have a bit more glare but much easier for me and cheaper. I will just change to a plastic tip then.
Im probably posting this too late.. But when you buy a screen protector for the note.. GET A PLASTIC ONE. not the vinyl self healing type . They do cause drag with the S pen .The cheaper ones work best.... I also use matte finish some of the anti fingerprint ones have a bit of a surface thats not perfect slick feels a bit more like paper. Kinda like the surface area of my Wacom Tablet...

I agree, the plastic Screen protector have most accurately with spen touchs.

Yea I got cheap ones, 3 for $5 or so. I would never spend more than that on screen protectors.

I have read a lot of good things about the spigen protectors, I just wished they made the tempered glass protectors for the Note 10.1.
.
I am away from using screen protectors for some years now and I never had problems so far with any damages on my scrren with Galaxy S9000, SII, SIII and Tab7 and now NOte 10.1.
Is there any other reason than protecting against scratches ?

I got a matte one from eforcity on Ebay and was not impressed. It made the screen really distorted/blurry. I am going to try a clear one now.

I agree with Sean09.... any matte or anti glare screen protector I ever tried made the screen image less sharp.

I absolutely agree with that. Problem is that the GNote 10.1 has not the highest resolution and a matte protector will allways make the screen image less sharp. In the case of the GNote 10.1 it makes a huge difference for me. On my HoX with >300 ppi I can barely see the difference.
That is very unfortunate, cause I like the pros of matte screen protectors very much:
-Better touch/slide feeling
-More resistance for S-Pen -> feels more like paper
-Less fingerprints
-No reflections
But, you know, try it out, it's not like the protectors are very expensive...
I posted this on another forum I frequent, but feel its purpose could be better served in this thread.
Any screen protectors like this ArmorSuit MilitaryShield that feature a high gloss, spage-age alien technology with some crazy horse**** composite material that reforms and repairs itself: DO NOT EVER BUY THIS IF YOU WANT TO USE YOUR STYLUS!
The weird material this thing is made of has two properties which immediately prove about as negative as possible:
1. As soon as you put your stylus to the screen, it looks like you've stabbed a hole in the protector or screen itself. Writing just continues that streak and it honestly looks like you're scratching the **** out of your device.
2. If you're able to make it past that initial shock from thinking you've just destroyed your screen, you won't be able to write for long because this protector feels like it's made of super glue designed to bond stylus tips to its surface. Trying to write the title to a powerpoint slide I was transcribing in class ended up giving me about 1/3rd the first letter before jumping, completely skipping the next letter, and then just picking up / leaving off at random so it looked like I was trying to create some alien language.
Also, the ArmorSuit Military Shield shipped with a single screen protector and, not a joke or exaggeration, an instructional video (found on YouTube by the manufacturer) which literally instructs you to cover your hands and screen protector in this liquid found in the packaging; so much of it that you're dripping this **** all over the place while you try to slide the screen into place.
I don't know how the nub tipped styli work, as my stylus has a pen tip so your results could be wildly different.
However, for under $10 ($5 less than the ArmorSuit Shield above) I picked up a MiniGuard by MiniSuit and, silly naming aside, am extremely happy with the purchase.
Its matte finish isn't so apparent that it reduces the visual quality of the screen, yet it does help reduce glare and fingerprints/smudges. It provides a nice surface for the stylus to write without adding resistance while the stylus is pressed to the screen, or friction from a weird material hell-bent on keeping your stylus from writing for longer than .0000001th of a second without skipping.
The MiniGuard came with 3 screen protectors, a microfiber cloth, and a little cardboard card. This card is kind of small and feels like it could have easily been more useful had it been 1" wider. But, that's a non-issue because my earlier purchase did leave me with a way better air bubble pusher card.
I'm sure there are other protectors out there that do this job just as well if not better, but, from the two I've recently purchased and tried I figured sharing my experience on this front might help one of you avoid wasting money on something utterly useless.

Thanks for the advice. You convinced me and I just bought one here (more convenient for European customers).
I already have a matte screen protector (bought cheap) so I know what to expect. Anyway I hope the miniguard will be of better quality and that, with three chances, I'll be able to install it better than the one I already have (with a couple of dust grains I couldn't get rid of).
I have the Armoursuit that nick mentioned, and I agree. The stylus drags on it big time. I have half a mind to just take the damn thing off.

I've been using some cheap, glossy screen protectors from Amazon for a year now and they work great. $8.99 for a 3 pack. Used with the white stylus nib gives a feeling of near stock.

I'm launching this question mainly to those who use the Note for drawing with the S Pen.
Before the Note I had an Acer Iconia A500 and I chose a Matte screen protector and I think it was a good decision for that tablet. I used it a lot for watching movies while in the underground, bus or train and the antireflectiveness of the matt finish helped a lot with dark scenes. also, it was a good antifingerprints solution. The drawback was the clarity of the image suffered a little but not very much so it was ok.
Galaxy Note is a totally different matter. I will still be using it for watching videos, of course, but I bought it mainly for drawing and painting.
Being a Wacom Intuos user for more than 15 years, I've always loved the feel of the finish of Intuos surfaces trying to imitate the feel of paper. The finish is matt and it wears with the years so you have to replace it from time to time but you can perfectly live with a very scratched surface for a long time. Of course, over a screen, it is a different matter.
So, I would like to hear the impressions of artist who are using or have used their S-Pen over Matte and Clear screen protectors. Does the S-Pen leave marks on matte surfaces? Does it move more naturally?
I've been holding off on a screen protector for the same reason( but I do have a case with a cover already). I mainly use my Note 10.1 for sketching and drawing.
One thing I will tell you is that some screen protectors, such as the Zagg protectors have a sticky feel to them. I have one on my S3, and I tried using my stylus on it and it adds to much grip to the surface. I think any screen protector that has anti-glare properties but is not matte will have this problem.
Another thing to keep in mind is that even on a standard Wacom tablet the drawing surface gets worn but you just don't notice it because it doesn't have light coming through it.
Also a matte surface will not only show more wear quicker but will also wear down the nib in the stylus faster.
The areas where you draw the most will become shinny, compared to the rest of the surface, from the constant friction.
Matte screen protectors also lower the contrast ratio. It lightens the black areas to be more dark grey.And they slightly distort the picture.
I would think it would feel similar to a Intous. Right now the bare screen is too slippery for my tastes.
Would love to hear from someone who has a matte screen protector and uses their tablet for drawing or painting, but I think one day I'll just break down and try it myself.
P.S. you might want to check out another post I had about my modded S-pen. I bought one with an eraser and modded it to make it easier to hold the button down and bigger so it's easier to hold for extended periods.

I have been using the clear screen protector and so far I like it. At first it didn't feel as smooth as without the screen protector so then I put the white touch leads included with the s-pen and it now feels smooth. I think Samsung included the white s-pen leads to use specifically with screen protectors. I haven't tried it on the matte screen protector but I think it will work fine.

Do you mean the leads that are fully made of hard plastic, not the ones made of plastic and rubber?

Ok. I think the date says this hasn't been a priority, but finally getting around to getting one for my N8013. Mainly because I hope finger prints will not stick so much and when they do, they are easier to clean off.
Thing is there seem to be a lot of protectors on amazon.
My main thing concern is keeping tip sensitivity ( ohh that sounds so dirty ). Prefferably matte but not necessary. Also I would preffer one that does not leave a residue if removed. Cheap is not important, but expensive is. I don't want to pay $40 for one.
Suggestions?

personally, i have tried different brands. but i still think that it is best don't use it. what about finger print , i just use a clean damn glass cloth give it wipe when it appears.
We use the cheaper matte finish ones on amazon . I Cant remember the company. Its been awhile since we bought any. I think the pen feels better against it then the Slick glass. OHH Make sure you do NOT get the Soft flexible silicone Type. The s pen will dig into them .
We have two note 10.1 tablets and a Note 2 phone .
Ghost Armor... I put that sh*t on everything.. lol
I use MediaDevil's matte screen protectors for mine No problems with spen and fingerprints are a lot better but totally gone
This here is the screen protector I will be purchasing soon. I have one like it on my note 3, the full glass screen protector is just great. It is clear, keeps clean easily, and barely any finger prints!!

the one thing I don't like about screen protector on this note is the marks from using S pen with regular writing
I used a screen protector for about a month, and quickly got rid of it.
There's just too much friction when swiping and the protector gets scratched by the S-pen.
Now using my 10.1 for over a year without protection without a single scratch on the screen.
Every 2 or 3 days I wipe the screen with a flat screen cleaner gel, that's it.
