Hi,
I'm currently using ICS 4.0.3 on my Arc S. This kind of sucks for gaming (loads of lag in games like Temple Run)...
I've been waiting for the 4.0.4 update but my SI number still hasn't appeared on the list :crying:
So I was basically wondering... Does the ICS update offer a better performance for gaming? Or do you think I should downgrade to GB?
Thanks for your help
In my opinion GB is better for gaming.
Prince
I also found gb better for games. There just seems to be a little bit of lag in big games after ics.
Okay thanks guys I guess I'll downgrade to GB then...
Will this void my warranty? :S
No, that wouldn't void your warranty at all.
Just be sure you flash 2.3.4 and not the previous versions as you might get the 0% battery issue.
Swyped from my SE Xperia arc (LT15i) using Tapatalk 2
Ok thanks I'll flash 2.3.4 and hopefully the lag will stop
small games like temple run and fruit ninja may have a little lag on 4.0.3 but hd games run really good, btw before anyhting i recommend you try arconium rom 4.0.4, the 4.0.3 build was in beta stage and besides arconiums rom has software rendering enaled, wich means it will run smoother, however in whatever ics rom you are, the xperia launcher always seems to lag, what i did was to flash arconium 4.0.4, and replaced the xperia launcher and music with apex launcher and google play music from the system/app folder, now my arc works like a charm, of course if your looking for gaming with 20mb games then i guess gb would be best, iif thats the case try arconium gb 8.0 or cyanogenmod 7.2.
Tried most of the ICS ROMs, AOKP had been best for gaming while on ICS. Now I've came back to GB 2.3.4, and it feels a lot more smoother now! :O If you're into gaming, then go for GB (preferably Arconium 8.2).

What would be the difference between this and the stock GB rom?
I owned a Sony Xperia S lt26i.
it will lags constantly while playing some games, i think it is because of its high screen resolution. (correct me if i'm wrong)
If i want to change whole device screen resolution from 1280x720 to 960x540
I just need to change the lcd density/screen resolution at build.prop and change all apps to 960x540 compatible (included launcher/dialer) , then change the details of my model to Xperia P (which is a 960x540 resolution)
Is it this way will work?
any help is appreciate
seems not easy to get an answer ~.~

You cant change the resolution of the screen. The density is another story though.

No need to be an asshole, you know what he means.

If you have CWM installed then make a backup. Then apply the changes you think will work. If it works then good if not restore the backup.

Q1:
CWM with locked bl will work as well? (i mean backup)
Q2:
changing density = changing resolution?
if 1280x720 change to 960x540, then
341.54 PPI (my PPI i think 340 if didn't rmb wrong) need to change to what value?
Edit: Checked, LCD density is 320, so what value i gonna to change to suit the 960x540?
Q3:
i tried to change before, but seems Launcher is not suitable for this resolution and those apps like subway surfers still is 1280x720 (define by the watching the FPS (2x~4x) ), so means i need details of my XS to XP then the apps need to re-download?
Thanks for reply
For unlocked bootloader, CWM backup works on latest version. I think version 4 is newest
I have no knowledge about resolution. Maybe check white paper, on Sony site, for the P for its specs.
After build.prop changes reinstall apps. Market should see changes.
Good luck

Extra:
LCD density increase = Screen resolution decrease = Performance increase = Visual quality decrease?
is it this statement correct?
You can't decrease or increase screen resolution. The number of pixels are a hardware thing. You can change DPI, but that won't have an effect on the performance, but on how big or small everything will be rendered on the screen.

Oh ya.. This is the answer i want :crying:
It won't increase performance then no point to change it
that means we can't play subway surfers with full fps.. (even lose a samsung galaxy s)
Question Solved.

I hope you weren't using subway surfers as your lag test. I just went to the store to download it and every comment about it said that the app made the phone lag/laggy.
My kids play temple run, looks similar, and no lagging here
Edit: I just played both and I have no lag. Game played smoothly. Only played a couple minutes though

Hi folks, after searching a little bit about the available ROMs and trying out the emulators (N64oid and FPSE), I decided to create this topic. But this time instead of I think/in my opinions, let's post about our gaming experience with different ROMs. And much better, let's post our in-game FPS (if show FPS option is available)! Here's my results:
Xperia NXT Light Edition 2.3.7 - Doomkernel v14
N64oid - Perfect Dark, Goldeneye 007 (45-50 FPS in outdoors and indoors, occasional frame drops in certain areas, show FPS option is not available, so these are may not be the exact values) (OC'd to 1.9 GHz)
FPSE- Tekken 3 - WITH OpenGL plug-in (39-45 FPS) (OC'd to 1.9 GHz)
Almost all of the fastest ICS, JB ROMs (Turbo UI, ICS++, IceCream pureness, Stock FWs, Express ROM, Xperia NXT2JB, XDark ICS etc.)
N64oid- Same games (30-35 FPS in outdoors and indoors, occasional frame drops in certain areas, again, show FPS option is not available, so these are may not be the exact values) (OC'd to 1.9 GHz)
FPSE- Tekken 3 - WITH OpenGL plug-in (27-32 FPS) (OC'd to 1.9 GHz)
That's all. Please follow the criterias I mentioned and post your overall experience about your Play's gaming performance!
PLEASE STATE YOUR ROM AND KERNEL
I was using that setting with stock. Now I'm using:
FXP CM9 rom
Lupus CM9 kernel
368/1200Mhz
governor: smoothass, scheduler: bfq
Its not as fast as stock, but faster than JB, so its the best compromise if you want features that GB lacks, and web performance is much better than GB.
It can handle almost all N64 games I guess, except slow down for few demanding ones. It can handle PSX games to at regular speed with software mode 50-60fps, but can't fast forward for most of them without feeling sluggish. Also the emulators are compatible with the touchpads.
Bottom line is if one wants best gaming performance with this device they'll have to stick with stock based roms.

Thanks for the info guys. Some say that updated Adreno drivers with the ICS/JB ROMs dramatically increase the gaming performance. I tried with JB Adreno Libs v3, ROMs with pre-installed Adreno drivers (ie TurboUI), but so far I've got the highest results with NXT Light. I haven't tried with high-end games like TKDR, NOVA 3, however. Now trying Extreme ROM. Will post the results.

Just tried ExtremeROM beta2a. Looks like our current champion is Xperia NXT Light, because the rest are identical in terms of gaming performance.
If only we could use the Adreno drivers on Xperia NXT Light without problems...
If that happens somehow, all hail the Ultimate Gaming ROM for Xperia Play.
SlimBean ported by cj360 is now my favorite rom for this device. I haven't managed to get it working right with this phone till the recent 2/2/2013 release. I'm getting better overall OS performance than both FXP CM9/CM10. On the graphic performance, its not as fast as stock sometimes, but its faster than FXP CM9. Also unlike CM and FXP roms, the dev remapped the Play buttons correctly to work with Market games so you don't have to manually do it. There are a few optimization one have to do to get the emulators working and running fast on JB though.
A small guide on how I set it up incase anyone else interested. Download:
SlimBean port for Xperia Play
Lupus JB multiboot kernel (you don't need the wifi module)
Gapps version 4.1 (do not use version 4.2)
Flash them using TWRP recovery that come with the Lupus kernel.
Change DPI: Change the DPI from 182 to 240. This ensure Google PlayStore will work correctly.
Turn on MTP mode: I found that with this rom and/or the Lupus JB kernel the USB mass storage driver seems to be messed up. When correcting to the computer via USB MSC mode, files get corrupted after transferred and I had to take out the microSD and connect to the PC to do a diskcheck. It also have issues with transferring files between the phone and microSD.
To fix this issue, go into Settings -> Storage -> press 'MENU' button -> select 'USB computer connection' -> select MTP mode.
Getting Robert Broglia emulators to work correctly: Two things:
-First, go to Settings -> Developers options -> Enable 'Force GPU rendering'. This really make a difference in performance. (While you're there, also disable the system animation.)
-Then in his emulators, go to Options -> Video -> turn off 'Fast CPU->GPU Copy'. Otherwise you will see a blank screen when you load the roms.
-Also use the Snes9x emulator from his website, don't use the Snes9x Ex+ from the Playstore, it perform poorer.
PSX: FPSE have the best performance. Leave it on software mode and each time you start the game, go to Setting -> System -> Enable 'Boost mode'.

Tried the SlimBean but I can't say I'm impressed by how it performs. So far NXT Gaming and AuroraPlay are also very good alternatives for the NXT Light Edition.
UPDATE: JokaWildv3 is a little faster than the NXT. WITHOUT overclock, it managed to show 28-34 FPS in Tekken 3. NXT scores approximately 5-7 frames less.
Looks like we have a new champion.

JokaWildv3 has better memory management than nxt. I easily achieve 57-60 fps easily with overclock see my signature below for my settings.
gbxplay v3 is my daily rom for couple of mounths and I think its one of the best.try it.

I don't think there's a faster ROM than JokaWild because it offers the maximum performance and really pushes Play's limits. I can't imagine how further a ROM can be improved by tweaks, memory optimizations and so on.
All we need is a way to install the updated Adreno drivers to GB. With OC I guess we can play all N64 and PSX (With OpenGL) near full speed.
Any volunteer developers?
If someone can reupload TrueAncestor ROM it would be wonderful. It looks promising and definitely I'd like to to give it a shot.
Also, I'm really wondering why JB and ICS ROMs perform so bad while GB ROMs make wonders. A technical explanation is much appreciated.

That's what happen with proprietary hardwares that is no longer supported by orig manufacturers.
Quick Update: Your ROM (N64) DO effect the overall performance. Not much, but gaining 5 or more frames isn't something you can ignore easily.
And I have an important request: Please, if you know any other ways to improve the performance by scripts, some tweaks, etc, share with me. I'm searching the whole internet for a week and didn't find anything useful so far. You may say "meh gaining two or three frames per second won't help ya much" but right now I need EVERY frame to reach at least 40 FPS when testing emus. If I succeed that means our Play can handle all the N64 and PSX games without problems and slowdown, thus being the ultimate portable device for emulation, including the GP devices (i.e. GP2X).
Oh, and are there any ICS/JB ROMs that offer identical or better (I doubt that) performance to GB? If so, please name it and I'll be happy to try.

extremerom developer claims that its kinda like GB.worth a test i think.:good:
Tried it already, unfortunately there's no difference.
The r800i enhanced v2 firmware also runs games very smooth with little lags. Try it out
You can find it in the dev section..
Will definitely try. Thanks for your suggestion.
And just noticed Doomkernel v14 is A LOT faster (like 50% more FPS in games) than LupusGB when it comes to gaming.
Edit: Tried that ROM (4.0.2.A.0.58) once, it's nowhere close to JokaWild. Thanks anyway.
Sorry for misleading, JokaWild is NOT the fastest ROM available, it's pre-overclocked to 1.4 GHz.
AuroraPlay v0.3 and NXT LE are the current champions.

Actually I doubt it will be possible playing Gangstar Vegas on medium settings with our Devices without any lag using any Rom.
Gangstar is damn big and got High Quality Graphics, but we must face the fact that the time will come where our phone will be pushed to the limits and simply has not enough power to run the game...
At least I´m sure that you won´t be able to play it on Good Quality Graphics and witout lag on our phones. :silly:
For best gaming performance I recommend the new Atomic GB 8.0.
Thank you all for your suggestions...But have you tested the game on JB or GB ? And why the "Low" quality graphics is not available for us? I mean everything goes black if low is selected...Only option "Very Low" or 'Medium" are available for us...!!

No, for heavy games and to run them lagfree, are the same settings but with the difference of 1.5 GHz.
edit the file profile.bin in the folder Android/obb/com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftGGHM
like this
5 0 5 3 21
then launch the game, you can get the medium quality
If you want to use your phone for heavy gaming, I recommend you to use a GB based ROM like Atomic GB (best for UI) or XGAMER (best for performance) with a custom kernel like LupusGB or DooMKerneL ! Don't install RAM consuming apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. and keep your phone light ! If it continues to lag, try to overclock your phone (but it can be dangerous !) ! That's all folks !

I don't get this,ok i get that lt18i is a bit faster than lt15i but with overclocking it can get there.
But i tried Ultimate HD and i tried Racing Bean 3.1 but non of these ROM's don't work with heavy games,GTA3 lags,Wild Blood multiplayer unplayable.gangsta rio lags like hell. And my RAM can't get higher than 200 mb and that's in his best days i mean if i have just maybe 10 apps installed. It's stupid to say that ICS/JB is better than GB in gaming, yes it's true ICS/JB looks so perfect and beautiful but now we have GB ROM's that looks like ICS or JB,here i'm using one it's called Atomic GB 8 and i can get 240mb Ram when i stop apps that are running, that's grate, and when i restart my phone and stop apps i can get up to 250-260 mb,and in combo with DooMKernel v22 ICS/JB don't stand a chance, the ROM doesn't look so much like ICS but it's getting there,if you want Jelly Bean look, there is Gin2JellyBean,but didn't try that ROM myself so i don't know what to tell about it.I didn't try this game yet on my Arc lt15i with Atomic GB 8 ROM but i will.I don't have very big hopes for it but hey...
Good day to all of you. I would like to tell you my vision for Arc S improvements. Firstly in Gaming. MUST support GB ROM PLEASE!
In-Gaming there should be at least:
- Screen Resolution adjuster: ARC S is way better in 640X480 Resolution (MUST SUPPORT FIT TO SCREEN SO NO BLACK AREAS). Most apps will run at 30FPS stable or more (Dead Trigger, Subway Surfers, etc)
- Screen Resolution for apps: This will set your selected games to run at most at least 640X480 instead of 854X480. (MUST SUPPORT FIT TO SCREEN SO NO BLACK AREAS)This app will set your games resolution to desired resolution when launch.
- More Kernels that you can made to make further improvements or ask DoomLord's or Wedgess permission to continue their GB kernels or ICS or JB.(If existing)
This is my vision. Thanks for taking time to read this. Good day. I don't mean any harm if you think that.
I see your point, however I seriously doubt changing resolution from 854x480 to 640x480 gives any major performance boost (I have no idea, where are you taking it from).
Secondly, fitting the image with size of 640x480 to 854x480 screen will just end up quite stretched.
Well if you have such a vision you can start by learning Android programming and development instead of sitting there and telling the whole world your vision.

I tried it. Since The time I used SJB rom Subway Surfers since it lags massively on JB. I had an 26 FPS on normal 20 on Heavy. But when I set res to 640X480 the FPS increase to 33-38 FPS which is great. So it worked that well. But the resolution won't fit the whole screen. It will be stretched but not much. In Emulators epsxe normally on Arc S Crash Team Racing has 54/60 on Selecting character on Adventure mode. While I gained more speed when reducing to 640X480. I can run it at 60/60 at 640X480. Thanks for noticing my idea since I don't have any money to go to oher devices. This Arc S was originally an Arc (secondhand) given to me by aunt. Then I swap to Arc S.
