the case overall is great but my biggest problem with it is how it feels when your using it when you aren't making use of the cover.
so basically unless you're using the cover to prop it up somehow, it seems like a chore to use it in either portrait or horizontal mode with the cover just behind the tablet.
anyone else feel this way?

I have the Moku Ultra-Slim case, and don't find this to be an issue. I'm not how much thinner it is than the "slim" case.

Nope. I just use the elastic band to secure the cover and really don't even notice it.

the cases with the stands arent available yet.
but the next best thing is the samsung flip cover. it replaces the back cover of the galaxy but adds a leather cover for the screen.

I got one of those it came free with my phone. It does look very good but i gotta say it offers no real protection. It doesnt cover the metal sides and the fact that it cant be 'locked' onto the screen means theres a good chance it will flip open if you drop ur phone and the screen can still be damaged. It makes taking photos extremely inconvenient too.
I now have 2 of those flip covers sitting on my desk gathering dust, the other one came free with my gf's white note.
This is sort of like an ipad cover/stand thingy

really expensive
That wouldn't even work. The magnets and sensors in the iPad are what lets the awesomeness happen. The Note doesn't have either

Well, neither would an iPad2-style smart cover, which is what the OP was asking about!
For me, the flip case is perfect because what I want a case for is simple to protect the screen when I put the phone in my pocket. Impact protection is doesn't figure into my personal requirements because I consider the additional bulk to be an unacceptable trade off for the protection that it would offer in the very rare event that I drop the device. YMMV of course!
The thing I like about the flip cover, other than the fact that it adds almost no bulk to the device, is that I find myself holding the Note one handed much like I would a paper back book, with my thumb on the inside of the cover, 3 fingers behind the device and cover, and my little finger resting on the edge of the bottom of the note.
I also find the cover a great stabiliser when taking photos in landscape as I flip the cover down and use it as part of my "grip". It works to a lesser degree in portrait too, though to start with it does feel a little more cumbersome.
Regards,
Dave
Absolutely, I love how the flip actually makes the Note a lot easier to hold safely. I'm actually happy to have it out while walking around, whereas I've been afraid I'd drop it on the pavement without the flip. I'd pay good money for an app that would switch it on and off when the proximity/light sensors see the case open or close, that would be great...

not true. i am sure its possible for developers to use the light/proximity sensor to lock/unlock the phone or maybe using some app.

This really works but specially the locking option. if i close the flip cover it actually turn off.
wish it would be the same on how unlocking it with just opening the flip cover.
very nice findings

Yes but what if your hand drifts over the prox sensor? sounds annoying...

I do use it the same way
any review or comment on book cover case by samsung....
Mine just came today, previously I used a cheap fake leather case that made the tablet big an bulky, and it didn't feel very nice (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Lea...ting_LaptopAccessories_RL&hash=item27c2fcc11c).
So I decided to buy the official book case from amazon, I didn't think it would be very nice, but it came today and I am very impressed. It looks very nice and expensive on the tablet. As in it looks premium, and not cheap like my fake leather case. It fits the tablet perfectly. It doesn't feel like a chore to have the case on, it actually makes the tablet very nice and very comfortable to hold. I would strongly recommend this case.
It feels nice, it's the thinnest book style case I have seen by a lot. It looks very nice & premium, and it will protect your precious tab. The only downside is that it is a bit expensive, and the weight with the case on is noticeably more + the cheap leather one is a lot more bulky and will provide slightly better protection at the expense of comfort and looks. I think it really is the best case by far for this tab, nothing come close in my opinion. I hope this helps you.
I was your 60th...
Had to thank you though because I'm looking for a great case.

Thank you very much
I've also got the Samsung Book Cover Case. I like it a lot except for one issue:
In typing angle, the tab is actually upside down. This causes 2 problems:
1. some apps that force landscape mode will default to the right-side-up landscape mode and therefore appear upside down. There doesn't seem to be any way to override this behavior on the tablet so you're force to physically rotate the tab and either lay it flat or use a steeper angle.
2. With the tab upside down, the ambient light sensor gets covered by the shadow of your hands while typing (or even swiping, tapping) so that the auto brightness feature keeps dimming and undimming the screen. It's pretty annoying. At least there's a workaround - you can disable the auto brightness.
Still, I'm thinking of trying one of the smartcover cases since those will let you set a shallow or steep angle with the tab right-side-up in either case.
Anyone compare the samsung case to a smart cover case. I'd be curious if they are any heavier or bulkier.
Oh, I'm also a little concerned the crease where the flap bends will eventually crack. Has this been an issue or is it pretty sturdy?
Thanks!
Does anyone who has owned this case for a bit have any opinion on it? How is the quality and such?

No protection for the bottom part of the tablet. Closing the case does not ensure the screen is actually protected as the part the screen is covered with can slide off of it. Dumped it quickly.

I do agree with some of the comments above however it is my case of choice. I sold a quality noreve leather case and stuck with the original Samsung book cover case as my daily driver with a solution to full protection using another protective case along with it.

You compromise portability by using two of those together. Check the one that was made by Samsung for Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a flap over the bottom part of the device and see how you could avoid using two cases instead of one.
Thank you for your feedback! Where do you get the fancy pen? I really like the thin form of the case. Can see it really well in your pictures.

Yes indeed it was a compromise however the weight of the two together was roughly the same as the leather case I had so for me did not matter. This setup gives me reassuarnce that even after a hard drop, the tablet should be safe whilst transporting as it is whilst on the move, that I am more likely to drop it. Once it it is in the office or at home, it is kept on the desk or on my bed without much risk of dropping and then I have the lightest and practical cover for my specific needs.
I have also purchased another bag that has a secure slot for any 10" tablet with padding around it and is used when I need to carry more than just my tablet with me and similarly when I take the tablet out, it is usually at a desk, this also eliminates the need for me to carry the second housing.
At the time of me buying my case, the one with the securing flap was not available otherwise I probably would have purchased that one instead. Having said that, I still probably would have bought a secondary case for transporting as the Samsung ones are too thin for real protection but are the most practical in my opinion.
The moral here is, if you are considering buying one of these thin cases, it is advisable to consider a second protective case or buy a fully protective leather / pu case that is adequately padded with the downside of it making the tablet feel a lot heavier.

I currently have the White GALAXY Note 10.1, and I had a faux leather case (generic) from Amazon, and gave it about 2 months of use.
After that I decided to risk my money and bet on the official book cover (in white, as well).
I must say it is extremely durable and gorgeous. It has, somehow, a corporate look, it's extremely thin and the back is well protected.
The cover, on the insides, has a thin and soft veil-like texture, and it sort of acts as a screen cleaner, each time you lift up the front part of the cover. (only applies to naked screen).
All in all, it's durable, I have the white for 2 months now and it's still the same pristine white as it was when it came in the box.
It's resistant and the writing position just works (no Steve Jobs quote intended).
If you have doubts, well, I recommend it!
official Samsung case is good looking, nice design, ****y quality and protection - mine is getting bubless by time on margins - squeezing it does remove them but wtf?! I recommend looking for something else !
I have been using the case for abouta week. I also havea screen protector on the tablet.
pros:
Very light weight
Feels good
Offers several viewing angles, when it works. See cons
Cons:
Magnets are not very strong and don't always hold it in the more up upright position.
Does not positively close, so it can expose your screen in a bag or back pack..
That said, I've been trying other solutions and none seem quite right. I have a gel case thatI bought to bulk up the tab to fit in a cheap cardboard folio usb keyboard case I have left over from another tablet. Although not very elegant, I thinkI will use it for travel as I can use the keyboard on airplanes, it provides extra protection, andI can remove three tablet with the gel case for just walking around. Just need a sturdy OTG and this set up is still less expensive than the official Samsung cover, unless you snag one of the 34.00$ deals from Amazon.
I've also tried the BT keyboard cover. Someone just needs to make one, who had actually useda tablet. Put the same clips in both sides so you don't have one that interferes with the space bar, make the shift and cap keys smaller so the keys can geta bit bigger and fall under you fingers, providea deeper trough so the tab is steadier and the back rest can be redesigned to help with that. I'm sure ZAGG will figure it out.
Finally because of the cons of the Samsung, I am thinking of ordering one of the knock offs that has the flap that closes on the back like the one for the tab10. I think I've seen it where the while thing, flap included, rolls like the iPad cover.
Finally, Samsung needs to work out the magnet thing, offer a smart cover, which should at least be possible with the phone variants.
I guess the simple answer to you question is mixed feelings about the official cover.

I ordered two knockoffs for wife and I. When it gets in from China, official covers go back to Best Buy. They offer virtually no protection and are so not worth the $50 each I paid for two.
I have a question to book cover owners: is it possible to rest your wrist on the tablet while taking notes when book cover is in the position like on the attached screen shot? Or your hand is to heavy and you and the magnet will slip of the back?
I would say that that position is ideal for typing and not the best position for resting the palm on especially if you are heavy handed as it's not really designed for taking heavy loads.

That's not good to hear - that case was next on my shopping list :/
I'm looking for a case that could handle my wrist when taking notes in a position like on the previous screen shoot, probably I will take a look at this one: puro case unfortunately it looks like no one from xda forums is using this one :/
One thing I notice with this case is that it does not cover the camera. I really like that. If you pick it up please review it!

I can confirm that yes when the case is folded the back camera is covered. In order to take a picture with back camera you would need to hold up the flap while pushing the on screen capture. Not as difficult as it sounds but you look stupid doing it. I mean if your taking pictures in public with your tablet you look like a tool already so it shouldn't bother you to much. Ill get a picture on here soon.

I have one in dark blue, when I bought the phone it was pretty much this or an otterbox. Like the poster above said, it's nice flipping it open and the screen turning off and on, no need to use the power button except when booting into recovery.

That's exactly how it works, by magnet. It's also held closed by the same magnet.
As for the case it definitely gives a nice grippy/rubbery diamond texture and it being literally part of the phone gives the whole thing a nice look/feel. It's my wife's phone and i feel it'll aid in surviving the rigors of purse living. Depending on how the phone falls it should give passable drop protection with the front right edge bring the obvious weak point. She is quite happy with it and, despite initial sticker shock, hasn't regretted the purchase.
I do feel the hinge area could use some work as my wife's doesn't crease evenly along the length (not a big deal just cheapens the impression). Life span of the rubbery "hinge" is also a question. The way the edges of the flap come to a pointed crease rather than being more flush with the phone seems poorly executed to me. I've never had a case of the same style to compare it to unfortunately.
Hi, i use to buy kickstand case for my phones. The 2 feature i need for this kind of case are:
1) do not add too much size to the phone (integrating a stand is often implemented adding too much size): i want the most minimalistic one (no rugged).
2) the back cover must be flat, as of course i use to write a lot with the S pen and the phone leaning on the table.
I prefer TPU, or at least no hard plastic.
Oddly i haven't found anything yet online.
With note 4 i used the Urcover ultra slim, wich is perfect for me.
Thanks for any advice.
I like this one so far:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z4DS7KC
It stands up in portrait or landscape, and it also works as a loop to hold the phone while walking. The only negatives are that it is just a basic plastic case with leather/etc. on top so it adds some bulk, but not much more than other cases.

Looking the pics it doesn't inspire me so much (but maybe live is better). But the big problem is that with that case the back is not flat, so writing with spen will be less comfortable.
Thanks.
