[Q] i747 question in regards to switching carriers - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all,
Just had a quick question, as I am thinking about swapping carriers from AT&T (horrible customer service and technical support). I currently have the AT&T i747, but I am thinking about switching from AT&T to T-Mobile as they are now providing Unlimited Everything for $70 per month. My question is, if I unlock my i747 for T-Mobile, which section in XDA would I go for custom ROMS, Kernels, tools and utilities and such? Would I stay here since the hardware is AT&T or would I need to migrate to the T-Mobile forums? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

In order to enable high speed data on you i747, you'll need to enable AWS frequencies on your s3 and unlock it. You could continue to use d2att ROMs if the model # on your phone does not get changed by using the T-Mobile mod.

You can use either sections, but you need to stick with i747 modems and firmwares.. And if you want to take advantage of T-Mobile's WiFi calling then you need a T-Mobile ROM.. You may or may not have to do the AWS mod. if you live in a refarmed T-Mobile area, then you'll get 4g and 4g lte fine, if not, then you may only get lte with edge being a fall back if you don't do the mod.. I used an i747 with T-Mobile and luckily my area is refarmed so I had 4g and 4g lte with no mods needed

OK, so I switched to T-Mobile today and my Mobile data and WiFi are picking up only one bar. Do I need to flash or change a modem setting or something?

The modem should not affect the wi-fi performance but it will affect data performance.

Alot of people overlook the fact that T-Mobile uses which frequencies? Ones that are higher 1700+ mhz and someone like at&t uses 850+ the lower frequencies travel farther and penetrate walls and buildings. In my area if you get T-Mobile it os because you dont want to talk on the phone ever again...
Good luck

Unlocking Q

If I unlocked my Hercules and used at&t prepaid and flashed a skyrocket radio would I be able to use their data? And also would the data be just as fast?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yes I think so might just have to change APN settings
How do you do that?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I'm not for sure you may not have to. I only know how to change APN on a iPhone. You should be OK with just an unlocked t989 and radio change
I believe you could use it, but it would only be 2g because at&t uses LTE for their high speed networks. The physical radio itself in our Hercules just doesn't support it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
But a att radio should fix that
No, not the software radio. That will give you the 2G signal, but we don't have the actual physical hardware to run full speed on at&t's network. That's part of why the Hercules has a different processor, the one in the international/att sII wouldn't work with tmo's hspa network.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
You would be able to use your Hercules on AT&T but if the fast data you're referring to is 4G LTE, then no, you won't get that because the Hercules doesn't have the hardware needed to support it. You would get HSPA+ though.

Couldn't you turn off 4g and just pull 3g and it work that way?

No. You could turn off 4G and get EDGE/2G though.
On Verizon phones you can turn off 4g to only use 3g why would it not be the same

T-Mobile's 3G/4G networks run on the same bands so you can't block something on one band and only let the other thing work. I guess Verizon has different bands for 3G/4G.

I see got cha.. I didn't know
I hope i'm not hijacking here but I have a similar question. I'm in an at&t lte market and was considering using my t989 with at&t via straightalk. Would I be better off to sell my phone and get a "true" at&t phone that does LTE?

If you use Straight Talk, then no matter what phone you use, you won't get LTE so it doesn't matter if you use a T989 or an AT&T phone.

[Q] Enabling T-mobile LTE on an AT&T Note 2

Have an AT&T i317 unlocked with a T-mobile data sim.
I've done the tweak to enable the 3G/4G bands, a la http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2068041
But now T-mobile added LTE in a few markets. I drove through one and suddenly got no data access. This is with "preferred network mode" set to LTE/WCDMA. If I switch to GSM/WCDMA, all is well (it sticks to the HSUPA and H+). So clearly it thinks it's on LTE but the phone can't access the T-mobile LTE.
I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.1, android 4.2.2, which also makes the model number show GT-N7105 instead of i317.
any tweaks to add the LTE? do i need to dump CM and use a diff ROM? do i need to go back to stock first to do any of this? (Right now, I can no longer dial *#7284#)
Thanks!
I am having a similar issue, I have a sgh-i317 with aws mod and the phone is not picking up t mobile lte even when placed next to a sgh-t889 that is getting it. Lte works with att sim but not working with tmobile sim. Any help would be great. I have tried many roms and modems and reflashing aws mod. Roms inculde jedimaster13/14 jedi x13/14 both att and tmobile versions and clean rom and stock 411 and stock 412
I figured it out see

Does the AT&T version have LTE? If it doesn't have the capability, but he modem is telling it to access it when it sees it, that might be why it dropped out completely. I'm mostly curious to see if AT&T LTE devices can use t-mobile's LTE network because I want to get an s4 active and I don't want to lose LTE by making that switch.
Try this for me, instead of that model number you have. Change it to the T-Mobile model#. Which is going to have to b done thru the build prop. Then reboot. Then go try and c if you pick up lte.
Because I just flashed a AT&T Rom on a T-Mobile GN2. And I pick up lte just fine with my AT&T SIM in there! And no AWS MOD what so ever. But the MODEM is still TMO, it'll always b TMO. Flash a att modem on a TMO GN2. Brick city.
Let me know what happens just curious!!
Edit: the Rom I flashed was SKY NOTE 9. No modem included!!!

WELL, here's your answer.
Maybe they getting the device at a cheaper price. Which would make someone but it. Instead of spending a lot more to have have the carrier brand you need. FYI
Both the phones are exactly the same. Besides the model# and done bloat. Like I said above, if it's unlocked it'll work, with both carrier's. So why not have that option to switch... and one more thing being able to take the phone internationally, and pop a SIM inside and ya have service. No roaming !!!
Just my 2¢® 2 you're question...
Att now has prepaid lte plan almost same as tmobile only .5 gb less of data everything else the same at 60 dollars . Plus att has better coverage well at least in the areas I frequent .

When a t-mobile version is available, I do buy it, but with ATT exclusives, that's not an option. For instance, I want the s4 active for its water resistance. T-mobile will soon offer the xperia Z, but when you compare the features and perormance, the s4 active is better, so for the money i'm willing to spend on a smartphone, i'd rather have the s4 active.. the hardware is capable of t-mobile LTE, but it still has to be configured properly with firmware and software to use the radios correctly. Since radios are some of the hardest pieces of firmware to alter, it's worth doing this investigation / collaborating to find work-arounds.
I didn't get tmobile lte on my at&t note 2 until I flashed the new at&t radio. That's all that had to be done. I'm using Skynote9 too. I did the aws mod again so I could get h+ 4g speed enabled and now is a flawless tmobile phone. Let me know if it works for you.

[Q] Flashing SPH-L900 from Sprint to MetroPCS?

Hello all. I'm currently attempting to flash my SPH-L900 (Samsung Note 2) from Sprint to MetroPCS. I've been looking 'round the net for information on doing this and I'm kinda spinning my wheels. I'm getting info that the MEID need to be changed to ESN, I need to obtain the SPC (and the MSL would be nice to have as well), Does anyone have any links to a good tutorial or information they could share on this? I've gotten quite a bit of information already, but I want to be sure I don't brick this phone, and I want to keep full functionality (4G data, text, ect.). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@fhaq While this is not exactly for metropcs it will cover the basics. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35753067 I used it as a guide to flash my sprint note 2 to cricket. You just have to use metro's info in place of the other.

That info was right on point. Now I have a solid base knowledge to work off of. Thanks jlmancuso!
4G speeds?
Anyone know if I'll keep the 4GLTE on the Metro network? I think that it would now that they do 4GLTE.
Doubt it. Most providers use different frequencies for LTE. If they are the same the next issue is our LTE/gsm card is integrated into the board. Not completely sure but think only sprint companies can use the LTE (virgin, ting, etc..).

Well looks like I wont be flashing to Metro then. I didn't even think about different frequencies for LTE.
If the ESPN's are good then you could use one of sprints sister companies. I use cricket and 3g is not bad get between 800k and 1.5 mb. Yes a long way from 4g but if you have WiFi you won't notice the lack of 4g most times.

TMO rom /w LTE support

I'm in a real pickle. I have a AT&T (I747) S3 that's capable of LTE. I've flashed several T-mobile rom's on it and everything seems to work except I don't get an option to choose LTE in the Mobile Networks. I assume this is because T999 did not have LTE but T999L did.
Are there any roms that are touchwiz (I need wifi calling) and also support LTE?
Thanks folks!
Um... Why haven't you tried at&t ROMs if you don't have a t999* device anyway?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Because AT&T roms don't have Wifi-Calling feature. I should have clarified T-Mobile is my carrier.
I was able to figure this out. I downloaded this 4.3 Stock deoxed ROM for T999L and I was able to get everything working. Now onto theming it like an S5. Unfortunately majority of the custom roms out are for the T999 and don't support LTE. http://click.xda-developers.com/api/click?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_14033932361886&key=f0a7f91912ae2b52e0700f73990eb321&libId=e2cc1c90-f9dd-49fc-b098-d6b1401acb32&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D2561670%26page%3D7&v=1&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.androidfilehost.com%2F%3Ffid%3D23252070760975307&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D2561670%26page%3D8&title=4.3%20Update%20for%20T999L%20now%20live%20-%20Page%207%20-%20xda-developers&txt=%3Cfont%20color%3D%22Blue%22%3ET999L_4.3_UVUBMK4_deodexed_KnoxFREE.zip%3C%2Ffont%3E

I still can't seem to get LTE on this AT&T S3 (/w AWS enabled). In the same area I'm able to pickup LTE on another AT&T S4 (/w AWS enabled). I'm able to pick up Edge and HSPA+ on both.
UPDATE: I was able to connect to LTE but I had to force the phone to use LTE Band 4 using *#BAND#. I was not able to make any calls at this point since it was the modem was running LTE only.
I then moved the modem to Automatic and the LTE remained and I was able to make some calls but on ending them, it went straight to Edge instead of HSPA+ or LTE.
The switch over between Edge to HSPA+ / LTE doesn't seem as smooth as the S4 and sometimes it just doesn't switch and sticks to Edge.
Ideas?
People have been trying to do this for a while and it is something I believe just isnt going to work. The I747 was built to use a specific set of frequencies on AT&T networks. T-Mobile uses different frequencies/bands and the I747 simply cannot make proper use of them. There's threads in AT&T forums about this. You should check them out.
I used an I747 before with T999 ROMs and had no problems connecting to LTE once I used the correct APN, can you please state what APN you are using?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Ok, I have realized that this is an error caused by the AWS patch going away when I reboot. I thought this wasn't supposed to happen with I747 and only with i747M's but it seems like it's happening to my unit.
Once I have the AWS patch on, it goes quickly from E - > 4G (HSPA+ - > LTE (when available). When the HSPA+ is only available, it has a much harder time moving from E-> LTE directly.

Questions about throttling

Hello, I have a question for all the tmobile users here.
I am currently on Sprint with a note 3, everything was going great with Sprint until I moved out into the county. I have been here for a year now, no cable, dsl, 4G lte on Sprint's spectrum, Wimax, fiber obviously, and no other reliable sources. Sprint is available here and all I have been getting is 3g until recently...now I'm stuck with 1xRTT. My only other option is satellite and I just can't bring myself to do that and I'm done waiting for Sprint's "Spark" since it will take years for them to actually update the towers and roll out any kind of improved network in my area. Sprint is upgrading towers now hence the drop in signal but this has been going on for months now. Lte is in the area maybe 5 minutes out but not on my property at all. They want to combine their three bands into one, providi g 40-50% more data coverage but we all know thats a big dream to come...if ever. Verizon LTE works here along with at&t's LTE (I understand Verizon sold them their lte spectrum on lower blocks and now tmobile), and T-mobile works with hspa+ but I have not tested lte yet, either way hspa+ would be amazing for me compared to 1xRTT.
My question for you is this, if I make the switch to Tmobile and bring over my domestic unlocked note 3 with the sim kit and start fresh as a new customer on the unlimited data plan and I reach my soft cap of 3gigs, how bad do they really throttle you? I guess I want to ask if they really check up on you and if the throttle speeds are equivalent to 1xRTT or faster? I'm just trying to figure out if it'd be worth the switch, I could handle the throttle if edge is a better punishment than 1xRTT. A good friend of mine works for tmobile and says the throttle is very real and that tmobile will know exactly when I reach my soft cap or if my phone is even rooted (doubtfull) and if I try to use a hot spot mod. I have been with Sprint for 8 years (too long) but it was nice to always have unlimited data with no cap or throttle if and when you actually had service, so my knowledge and experience is only with Sprint.
Can someone please help with some of your personal experiences?
Thank you!

If you get the unlimited data plan you won't be throttled and if you root your phone you'll be able to bypass throttling limits. The only way for T-Mobile to know you're rooted is if you have the T-Mobile app installed. It can tell if you allow it to run a diagnostic on your phone.

Ah I see, so does any particular rom help in that aspect or just simply need to be rooted with SU and use a wifi tether mod/app?
I'm already rooted and am running a rom on my Sprint note 3 and I'll be using a T-Mobile sim so it sounds like I'll be good to go.
The T-Mobile app makes sense to why they would even know in the first place, maybe running AOSP would be safest?

Most roms do at this point. I recommend tweaked nf1,, doesn't get any better than it.
