Questions about throttling - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hello, I have a question for all the tmobile users here.
I am currently on Sprint with a note 3, everything was going great with Sprint until I moved out into the county. I have been here for a year now, no cable, dsl, 4G lte on Sprint's spectrum, Wimax, fiber obviously, and no other reliable sources. Sprint is available here and all I have been getting is 3g until recently...now I'm stuck with 1xRTT. My only other option is satellite and I just can't bring myself to do that and I'm done waiting for Sprint's "Spark" since it will take years for them to actually update the towers and roll out any kind of improved network in my area. Sprint is upgrading towers now hence the drop in signal but this has been going on for months now. Lte is in the area maybe 5 minutes out but not on my property at all. They want to combine their three bands into one, providi g 40-50% more data coverage but we all know thats a big dream to come...if ever. Verizon LTE works here along with at&t's LTE (I understand Verizon sold them their lte spectrum on lower blocks and now tmobile), and T-mobile works with hspa+ but I have not tested lte yet, either way hspa+ would be amazing for me compared to 1xRTT.
My question for you is this, if I make the switch to Tmobile and bring over my domestic unlocked note 3 with the sim kit and start fresh as a new customer on the unlimited data plan and I reach my soft cap of 3gigs, how bad do they really throttle you? I guess I want to ask if they really check up on you and if the throttle speeds are equivalent to 1xRTT or faster? I'm just trying to figure out if it'd be worth the switch, I could handle the throttle if edge is a better punishment than 1xRTT. A good friend of mine works for tmobile and says the throttle is very real and that tmobile will know exactly when I reach my soft cap or if my phone is even rooted (doubtfull) and if I try to use a hot spot mod. I have been with Sprint for 8 years (too long) but it was nice to always have unlimited data with no cap or throttle if and when you actually had service, so my knowledge and experience is only with Sprint.
Can someone please help with some of your personal experiences?
Thank you!

Edge is .08 mbps download not really usable. I've used hot spot hacks for a year with no problem .
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Thanks Mike, are you on the newer $20 unlimited 4G, or are you grandfathered on the older unlimited data plan? Also when you used the hot spot hack are you throttled still or is it just when you use it normally?
Sent from my SM-N900P using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I've never been throttled. I'm on the unlimited $20 that does not include tether . When I'm in a 2g area it's basically unusable data

Okay awesome, thanks for the feedback and help
Sent from my SM-N900P using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

If you get the unlimited data plan you won't be throttled and if you root your phone you'll be able to bypass throttling limits. The only way for T-Mobile to know you're rooted is if you have the T-Mobile app installed. It can tell if you allow it to run a diagnostic on your phone.

Ah I see, so does any particular rom help in that aspect or just simply need to be rooted with SU and use a wifi tether mod/app?
I'm already rooted and am running a rom on my Sprint note 3 and I'll be using a T-Mobile sim so it sounds like I'll be good to go.
The T-Mobile app makes sense to why they would even know in the first place, maybe running AOSP would be safest?

Okay sounds good and thank you. Looks like I'll be making the switch then.

Most roms do at this point. I recommend tweaked nf1,, doesn't get any better than it.

You shouldn't need an unlock code for the T-Mobile GS2..

Yeah I figured I guess my Sim went bad :/

Did ever get your sgs2 to work on simple mobile? I'm really hating Tmobile right now, cos they keep changing my payment due dates. Before it was the 30th, then 29th, then 25th, then 21st, and now they changed it again to 19th....
Because of this, i'm really planning on switching to simple Mobile. But, how is it working for you? HSPA+ Data speeds ok? is it capped?
Well simple mobile uses tmo as a network backbone.. Just an fyi.

I've been on simple 2 months now yeah I got it working my sim went bad I had it in my pocket and I guess I did something to it got replacement and everything works well all u have to.do is change the apn but speeds are the same as if.on T-Mobile that's on the 60 dollar plan not sure if 40 one willl work just as fast if it.does I'm paying 20 bucks more for nothing
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
Awesome...so whatever speeds i'm getting right now with tmobile i should be getting as well with Simple.
Another question, does Simple throttle you if you use too much data? I tried to find an answer to their website but couldn't find anything.
Simple is far more restrictive of their data usage and you get no roaming.
With Monthly4G you get voice/text roaming but no data roaming. higher data caps too. I would go with Monthly4G
Yeah they do but I'm not so.much of a data hog I use less than 2 gigs for a daily use phone its nice I use wifi when ever possible, they throttle after 2gigs , and for 2
Months I haven't had an issue for the price and no contract I like it

I think your right. Simple mobile is just reselling the T-Mobile $60 2gig plan by calling it an unlimited plan. This is technically true, as they don't ever cut off your data, they just throttle it.

Yup. I'm suprsied you have been throttled before. 5gig and your throttled.
So using your phone so much.
yes im aware that they throttle lte after 5 gigs,my area just got lte,ive been on hdspa until now,can i disable lte so i can just use 3g+?
Wouldn't matter. In the system it shows you with an LTE data plan. System automatically throttles at 5gb.

Ive always had an lte data plan on my skyrocket then my og note, was never throttled before lte was turned on
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
Weird. Ive always been throttled. Had those same three devices. Was able to get 8-10gb on skyrocket before throttle. Then ATT changed the policy to 5gb for lte and 3gb for 3g/hspa+ while I had my note. Since then I've been throttled every time.
Also just had lte turned on here a couple months ago.
There were a couple threads in the note(and I think skyrocket) threads that were showing how to bypass throttle. I never had any luck.
Found the thread if you want to try it.

The APN trick only worked when AT&T had a soft cap (top 5% of users in the area I think it was). When AT&T switched to a hard cap of 3GB/5GB, the APN swap trick stopped working.
Makes sense why it didn't work then. Only way to fix would be to change in the system then. But then the data wouldn't be provisioned correctly.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
To put it simple..... that's the way it is
not really, and for future reference, any old cingular business customers should look at their contracts, is it mentions untamed then they cant throttle your data

Wow

I bought a gn2 unlocked off craigslist for $450.00 cash.
Purchased a solavei wireless sim card.
60 bucks a month no throttle after any amount of data used.
Great coverage averaged 14 mbps down. Hmm with speeds like these hard to see how sprint stays with these guys.
For the first time in years I have been thinking of bouncing. From sprint to another Carrier . The blazing data speeds have me mezmerized. Solavei rides on tmobiles network. But at that price it may be worth a switch.
Bought the 2nd gn2 for a work phone. Gonna wait and see if sprint builds out the lte network in my area. But it's sad when I go back to my sprint gn2 and speeds won't pay 512 kbps on average.

I did the post just for you.
Honestly your best rebuttal would have been not to post.
Wasnt about how crappy sprints 3g is. But more about how fast tmobiles network is.
Been a sprint customer 15 years nothing new to me.
Hopefully the softbank acquisition helps Fix that.
And the post is phone related its a phone forum.

HSUPA+ compared to EVDO lol. If HDUPA+ on tmobile was always 14-15mbs download then they would have no need to roll out LTE. Thing is HSUPA+ cant maintain that speed.
Uh... nvm I am not going to explain... congrats on your unlimited highspeed data through tmobile.

HSPA+ ? Trust me even still in the dfw areas it's good averages 6 to 15Mbps. They don't need to roll out lte but normal consumers don't understand differences between 4g technology. And t mobile is truly using 3g but when pushed to its ultimate limits it hits 4g like speeds. But they don't people that obviously.but that's why gsm is so much better than cdma and other stuff too lol

I'm also wondering when tmo gets the iphone. How much the network will suffer.
Just like the other carriers I presume.

Is Tmobile still "unlimited" - 5-10GBs then throttled to hell or is it like Sprint's unlimited?
I have tmobile and one of their major slogans sort of is "the only truly unlimited data plan". Ive used like 30 gigs of data the month I have owned my note 2 and have never been throttled. Usually get around 27mb 19 down. I notice no change in speed.

No they have a plan that's 5 and 10Gb with hotspot that's throttled but if you get the unlimited 4g plan it's cheaper and better setting how we can all get hotspot for free.

If Sprint were to release EvDo RevB or even RevC, it'd pull speeds of up to 30mbps, too. Problem is, lte becoming the new standard, it'll evolve the fastest and its cost efficient for Sprint in the long run (also cost efficient for any carrier.) This is why everyone's going to lte.

GSM certainly has its advantages, that's why I was with T-mobile previously. The HSPA is getting pretty fast at it's peak, but there are so many times when you don't get those numbers if you are in a heavily used area.
Having said that, I switched to Sprint because they are implementing the next wave of GSM (READ: LTE-A) before T-mobile will be finished with their GSM network (Read: HSPA+42)

Net10 now unlimited?

I just got wind of Net10 and apparently they're offering unlimited data with AT&T SIMs.
How's their service? Also I see in the details that no tethering is allowed. How do they know when you tether and what do they do?

Does it support AT&T LTE? If it does that would be awesome, if you're not throttled

It seems that there is no LTE with any MVNO but that doesn't matter much to me because AT&T's LTE coverage is spotty and the speeds I've experienced really disappoint me
Sent from my LG-E980 using Tapatalk 4
I have been on a straight talk sim for almost a year now. 45.00 a month unlimited!!! Im running both this device, and my butterfly s on it. I get the exact same service as if i were using att!! For less than half the price! Net 10 is the exact same service, hspa+ speeds, which is fast enough for me, i do all my downloading and youtubing off my wifi at home. One thing to note is that the data part is NOT truly unlimited. If u stream videos, and dl large files, they will throttle u until the next month. And if it happens to often, they will disconnect u for good. But for me.....i couldnt b happier, like i said im constantly on wifi for the data part of it.

Well no longer a rumor only drawback is 2G speeds Still better then $15/mb roaming data rates.
20 cents a min for international calls is pretty good though.

A T-Mobile executive was quoted as saying a merger with Sprint was the "logical ultimate combination" two weeks ago. Wouldn't be so bad to add Sprint's coverage (realestate) to Tmob's, as long as CDMA is killed off with fire ASAP.

I also wouldn't mind the extended coverage but I am afraid of Sprint's ethics and HORRIBLE customer service somehow leaking into T-Mobile's customer service. The only benefit I see is like you said the extra coverage but I am more afraid of Sprint's "bads" to creep in. And yes definitely no CDMA that would be horrible.
A T-Mobile Sprint merger would be good if CDMA, was killed off, T-Mobile had operational control, they sell the 2500mhz spectrum use the additional 1900 mhz for HSPA and use Sprints 800 mhz for LTE as well as the current 1700 mhz

You forgot one thing... Keep Sprint's unlimited data for life, cause unlimited 4G is nice. I said pretty much this same thing in some other thread. Same here. But I know exactly what you mean. If sprint and t mobile merged, they would have the ability to expand further than at&t and Verizon.
It actually makes a lot of sense. They just have to nit pick the good things from each carrier.
1. 4G from t mobile.
2. New and old spectrums from Sprint.
3. Unlimited high speed data from Sprint, without a price hike.
4. GSM from t-mobile.
5. The phone policies from t mobile.
6. John Legere.
With that all being said, maybe t mobile should buy sprint instead. Looks like they have more going for them.
I also wonder what the new logo would look like. SprinT-mobile maybe?
Edit: and the t-mobile girl. If they really feel like getting rid of her, they can send her my way.

I've done data roaming in a few different cities in mexico and although the speeds do get throttled I was able to do anything I needed to do within email and social media. I got a text from T-Mobile with the option to use 4g at an additional cost per day but didn't see the need. Throttled speeds should be around 128kbps
