I use att for my data provider. When roaming other carriers are labeled as AT&T. How can I get my device to show the correct carrier names? Screen shot is of the results I get when searching for a network.

We all know that there's a setting called "data roaming" or "use mobile data while roaming". I'm wondering what is considered "roaming" to the phone? And how does the phone know it's currently "roaming"?
My guess is, the phone considers itself being roaming when the network it picks up is not the default network specified by the SIM card. For example, if I have a Rogers SIM and I travel to US where Rogers network is not available but only AT&T network is available, the phone will pick up AT&T signal, and thus the phone considers itself as "roaming"?
Is my understanding correct?
it's defined by your SIM card not the phone
once you jump carrier you are roaming
Is there a way I can see what carrier I am currently running? I'm on TMOUS but in my area there is partner carrier that my phone switches to automatically when I'm out of TMOUS service area. Basically, where I live there has never been 4G until recently and i'm not sure if its TMO or another partner carrier and I would like to know who it is. I've called both carriers and they both say its not them. Any way that I can see who it is when I'm connected to it?
settings > About phone > Status > Network
But if you're running on a roaming partner of T-Mo, its unlikely the phone will ever show that its on the other named network. It'll all identify as T-Mo because you're using a T-Mo SIM/service/etc.
Back in the day, I used to be able to see a list on my AT&T Motorola Razr of all the cell provider signals in my area. For instance, if I were in Pittsburgh, I could see the list of available networks compatible with my phone (the phone would apparently create the list from actually getting signal from those cell towers) and if I felt like it, I could switch to a different provider that had a stronger signal.
Now that my gs3 is unlocked I'm hoping I can find a way to see that same information. For example, the AT&T signal in an area might be terrible, but there could be another provider that will give me "roaming" coverage with a better signal. I would then switch to that roaming coverage voluntarily on the fly.
Anyone know of a way to do this? Under settings / more settings / wireless and networks / mobile networks I find "network operators". Currently only "default setup" is listed there. But this is where I'd expect to see other network signals that my phone is getting.
I have seen a few postings mention this.
Dial *#197328640#
This brings up the debug screen (service mode)
I unlocked my T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 and I am trying to use it on an AT&T mnvo but I do not get any data service. So I am wondering if the bands need to be changed in this menu or some other menu on the phone?
Does anyone now this information? I am trying to determine the cause of no data on my Red Pocket sim card. I have the APN Settings correct and registered on the Network but still no data connection.
I unlocked my VZW g6 play by entering code in settings section to unlock phone (did not insert AT&T sim and wait for code request). It said code accepted but when I put in my AT&T sim I can't connect to their LTE network. It reads the sim, switches to global (gsm), and my network says AT&T with the proper phone number for that sim... But no 4g. I tried inputting the APN settings I found on several sites.. No luck. Same when I copied the APN settings from another AT&T prepaid phone I had available. No go. I called and asked for the APN settings from AT&T and they said I need to change the IMEI number on my sim to that of my g6. They said they did that for me. After power cycling the phone as instructed I still have no data service. Anybody have an idea what settings I need to use in order to use my AT&T sim? Or is that even my problem?
