How to boot into recovery with remapped buttons? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

I have a friend that remapped his power button to the home button (his power button had become unresponsive due to heavy use). The thing is, a few days after that, his phone suddenly shut down and wouldn't turn on.
The question is, the usual way to reboot into recovery is volume up + power + home, but in this case there is no power button and the home button is acting as the power button, so essentially we only have two buttons to work with
I know its a long shot, but does anyone have any suggestions? Are there any alternative ways to get into recovery?
Thanks guys

I think you can by using adb reboot recovery. I can't remember the exact command. Google might be able to help more than I can in that regard.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

or you can download quick reboot or goomanager from the playstore and use the reboot recovery option

ROM Manager Hard Bricked My Phone?

I wanted to update my phone from CM9.1 to CM10 and wanted to back it up first. The first backup never went past "clearing space..." so I cleaned out all of my old ROMs and a couple of backups. Then I thought, maybe I don't have the latest version of recovery, so I reflashed Touch recovery. Then I hit the "reboot into recovery" in ROM manager. The phone vibrated and "Samsung" boot animation appeared very briefly....then nothing. I tried pulling the battery and then holding going directly into recovery with the volume buttons and power and it would just vibrate and show the opening samsung boot screen. After trying that a few times, now all I get is the vibration.
Today I tried the "soft brick" solution, but all it does is vibrate every alf second.
So am I bricked?
Your are soft bricked.
Take battery out for ten seconds
Insert back in hold volume keys press power
Let go while continuing holding volume key. Some people hold volume keys and power continuously but that doesn't always gets it.... g luck

To enter recovery, your timing during the phone vibration has to be somewhat perfectly timed.
Power up and keep one finger in the middle of the volume control so both volume controls are pressed simultaneously with one finger on the power button. When the phone vibrates one time, remove finger holding the power button while still holding the volume buttons until recovery appears.
Good luck OP.
When I do this, all I get is a black screen after the initial Samsung boot screen. Am I supposed to follow the instructions on the soft brick thread? Or just do this over and over until something else happens?
Good news guys. I used the soft brick instructions and loaded recovery through odin and it booted up into CM9 on its own! Thanks for the help!

Have you tried holding volume up and down at same time while holding in power button at the same time plugging in the power cord this will get you to download mode so you can use odin to flash new rom if possible. Or just turn power on while holding down volume button while it powers up this will get you to download mode without the power cord also.

Phone will not go into download mode [fixed] (now it won't power off)

hello,
i have a brand new Koodo T989D.
I have Kies, samsung drivers and odin installed. I have rooted phones in the past but something is up with this one. It will not go into download mode. volume up+down with power key won't work, powered off volume up+down then connect via USB doesn't work, tried all combinations for t989D.. it seems strange. Odin does recognize the phone (it says connected), but the phone is ON and running OS (with debugging mode)....
everything else works fine though through kies etc.
Isn't it hold volume down and home key and power?

How to enter recovery/download with a Koodo T989D
I have the exact same phone as you from Koodo and have been able to access recovery/download mode on the phone via button combos straight out of the box.
For RECOVERY MODE the exact button combination for the Koodo T989D is:
Press and hold the "volume up + volume down" buttons, while holding the volume keys press and hold the "power button" until the phone vibrates/screen turns on to the Samsung logo and let go of 'only' the power button. The phone should then display the recovery system image and load to the recovery start up screen.
For DOWNLOAD MODE the exact button combination for the Koodo T989D is:
(As a precautionary, take out your battery and place it back in)
While phone is off, connect the USB to your phone making sure the USB cable is attached directly to a powered USB port (if on a desktop PC, the main USB ports on the motherboard I/O is the safest way to go). Now, press and hold 'only' the "volume down" button. While holding it, press the "power button" until you feel the phone vibrate/screen turn on and let go of 'only' the '"power button". Keep holding on to the "volume down" button until a "warning screen" appears. Once it displays, press the "volume up" button and you should now be in 'Download mode'
Hope that helps you are anyone else who was curious about getting in to recovery/download modes for our KOODO T989D. Good luck!
thank you all
interesting, got it to work after enabling debugging mode..
rooted and unlocked (thanks to owl74 method) but whenever I press power button and select reboot option, it freezes and the bottom buttons stay lighted.. i have to pull battery or long press power button.. it does shut down and power back on but reboot option makes it freeze:silly:
UPDATE: Phone won't turn off even when selecting power off option, it seems to say on with screen black and buttons lighted up.. have to resort to battery pulls

Is this happening with the stock Koodo ROM? Go in to your recovery and do a factoryreset/wipe data, also wipe your cache. Let us know if the issue still occurs.

Please go to this link and download the files under "Koodo T989D TLLG2". Once you finish downloading the files, follow the instructions in the OP on how to re-flash the stock Koodo ROM. That will definitely help you with the issue you are experiencing. Good luck!

[Q] A bootloop without the possibility of getting to download mode?!?

I am not a total noob. I have always done my research and I am well versed with the procedures but this has me stumped. About six months before I had installed Omega ROM (told you i wasn't a noob) and things were fine and dandy. I was running today and bam! my phone just enters into a bootloop (lost my data on endomondo too). But hey! I am an expert right? or so i think to myself and I try getting into the recovery mode / download mode. I press the volume down, power and home button. The warning comes up and all that i have to do now is to press the volume up key right? wrong!! Inspite of pressing the volume up key the bootloop continues. I dont know what i am doing wrong. I am sure it is a really silly thing but i am not able to figure it out myself. I read the posts and all of them deal with other issues. Can someone help me?
Can someone check this up for me? Switch off your phone and try going into the recovery mode by pressing only the vol. down button and the home button pressed together. If it does not show the warning screen prior to the recovery mode then it would mean that my power button is malfunctioning. It would take just two minutes of your time. Please post your results here. Please.
If you press just the volume down and home button not a lot happens not the warning screen anyway. When I boot into recovery I have to wait for the Samsung logo to appear twice or it just reboots. Might be worth pressing all 3 buttons and wait for the 3rd restart before letting go
Edit
It's volume up home and power for recovery if you get download mode and volume up the phone just reboots hence why you go back to bootloop

The problem is solved. It turned out that it was not a boot loop after all. The power button got pressed and was stuck in that state thus causing repeated reboots. It was by pressing the volume down and home button without pressing the power button that i figured out that the power button was stuck. So i took out the screws and adjusted the band slightly and now alls well.

[Q] Please Help!

HI
my device is Xperia LT28h
when I install room (4.4.4) on it
after installing my phone don't power on.
Have you ever tried pressing power button and volume up button together?
Also I wanna remember you that after installing a new ROM the boot takes, at least I think so, hours. Press the two buttons so long til you get a vibration.

I don't mean that u should use the power button. Connect the phone to the pc and press the volume up button. (not the power button) if a blue light appears, then try to open a terminal and wipe your whole mobile phone. then try to flash the original android version.
I am not responsible for more damage. But i think this could work.
Wipe your complete mobile phone by tipping it in the terminal and install jelly bean.
Does your phone boot by pressing the power button and the volume up button?
Have you got locked or unlocked bootloader? If your ROM requires for example unlocked and you work with locked, than your phone is dead (sometimes ł

[Q] I am at the bootloader and my power button won't let me select

I took my phone in for a cracked screen and when I got it home I found out the volume up was not working. So I booted into recovery thinking I could check in recovery to see if it was a software or hardware issue, but the volume up did not work there. So I rebooted and now my GPE edition rom is stuck at the spinning dots. When I go back to the bootloader I cannot select recovery. My volume down button make the selection go up, my volume up button does not work and for some reason even though I can reboot with the power button, I cannot select with it. Is there any other tricks to wipe and reinstall?
ADB does not return a device list.

I had the exact same problem, but opposite. Vol down didn't work. Bootloader problems were the same.
Your issue is that you vol up is stuck.
The way i fixed it was to pull off the volume rocker and put it back on my own. I DO NOT suggest you do this.
When you took it for repairs, the reassembled it incorrectly. Take it back and have them fix it.
