Since the back cover for the Atrix is one piece and actually covers the sides as well, i was wondering if these can be made out of carbonfiber. Anyone have the hookup on someone that can make custom CF parts?
Getting a case that snaps around this seems counter intuitive. You'd think the incipio and spek cases would just be replacement covers.

I was on some website, I cant remember and they had other backcovers on pre-order for $20.... They all looked like a rubberized material with a sort of carbon fiber design and each had a motorola symbol in the center. Either blue, green or pink.
I believe it was MobileCity Online or something like that. Definitely only preorder status right now.
I agree the back is waaaay too slippery. I feel like I am going to drop it while typing. I am holding out for Powermat to release a back to use with the charging pad. If not, I might opt for the soft rubber battery covers.
Interesting. I'd like to get an extra one to use as a template. I think i got someone lined up for carbon fiber but i'd need to give them a template that wouldnt survive. I also have to make a minimum order of like 50, which i'd toss up on Ebay.
i'd be down for a couple if you could post some shots of what it would look like...since it does wrap around the corners it would slim down the phone too (versus case)...

I would so buy one.
I have no idea how much these are going to cost me and i wont know until i can give them a battery cover to work with.
Honestly, if i have to get 50 made (they estimated 50-100), i wouldnt do it unless the price i could sell them for was about $40. Regular cases are around $30 so $40 would be a great price. Most CF cases are grossly overpriced and i'd like to avoid that.
Also, this would be a replacement for the battery cover. It wouldn't be a case so it would still work in the docking stations.
I seriously doubt you'll ever see a carbon or any other compost back. There is just no way to mold in the little clips that hold the back on. So plastic is your only bet. you can't even wrap in carbon because you need to fold the material over the edge for a good hold, and doing so would block the locking clips.
I'm trying my hand at covering the back in 3M DI-NOC (carbon fiber looking vinyl), which should give it some grip.
I have no experience with CF but those little tabs may be moldable (is that even a word??). Ill continue to investigate. If it doesnt work, i lost nothing.
If you get that Dinoc on post some pics up here. I'd be interested to see how it holds up around the corners since it cannot be folded back inside due to very small tolerances between the phone and the cover.
having a little experience with molding and CF, it will be so hard to get a good piece with the proper mounting tabs, you'll have more scrap than good pieces. Not to mention that when it's that thin, it will probably snap after a few uses (mounting clips, not cover). CF isn't some magical material you can will into any shape like you can melted plastic. To mold in the locking tabs means the piece would be "clipped" into the mold upon completion, not a desirable situation.
I will post if i get the DI-NOC to look presentable. I know a few places sell pre-cut DI-NOC protectors, but those don't cover 100% of the phone.
Your experience with CF is a lot more than mine, so ill take your word for it, but i will still investigate because it wont cost me anything. If it works, great.
The only thing i'll put on mine is a very thin "sticker" or nothing. A case isnt going to work for me as i will be using a dock. It seems stupid to think that companies made a case when all they had to do was replicate the battery cover and then market this as "Hey look, our solution works with your dock."

Hey, if you can get it done, then more power to you, just trying to make sure you have a realistic outlook going in.
I'm betting companies don't make just backs because the design is 'proprietary' to the manufacturer.

I didnt even think of that! Surely there is some Chinese company chomping at the bit to make some cash.
EDIT
A clear acrylic battery cover would look cool. Show the insides a bit. And that will SURELY be cheaper than CF.

I apparently fail at vinyl. I can't get it to wrap the corners nicely, the stuff is too thick.

That **** is ROUGH, let me tell you.... I have done rear view mirrors (not side view, the interior ones) and man I thought all 11 years experience I've had doing vinyl was a damn joke! I gave up on even starting the back panel, check out the thread I just created for the carbon fiber front and sides, not to mention the back panel with REMOVED AT&T logo, REMOVED "HD VIDEO" text, and the "blur" in Moto blur....

I'm in the process of creating a real carbon fiber (no decals!) replacement for the stock SGSIII battery cover. I've completed the first half of the mold so far (see attached photo). I'm waiting on materials to complete the second half, so it may be a while before I have an update.
If you'd like more details or to see how I got to this point, feel free to PM me and I will send you a link to my blog post with details and more photos (I can't post links here yet). I'll try to answer any questions here as well.

What exactly is the advantage of carbon fiber, I know its expensive so it has to have some reasoning behind it?

The REAL advantage is lightness compared to steel. But, when you are doing that, you don't get a pretty 4x4 twill, and it isn't really shiny.. it is flat, and dull looking.
the purpose for the back of a galaxy s3, will be that is looks awesome.

For this application, the only advantage is aesthetic. The carbon fiber cover will certainly be stronger (and possibly a bit stiffer) than the original, but that provides no real benefit here. It will likely be a bit heavier, but probably not a noticeable amount. Also, it's not more abrasion resistant until you reach the fibers.
Additionally, there is at least a nagging concern that it will affect signal strength which may lead me to using kevlar or fiberglass. Using fiberglass would give me the option to have it slightly translucent or any color that I would like.

Good luck. Someone tried this in the Rezound forum..... Never got it to work properly. I'd love one if you can figure out how to do it properly.
Currently not being productive on my S3.
How are you going to clip it in?
Wow, this brings back memories when I used to "play around" with carbon fiber and epoxy, and the requisite vacuum pump. I remember getting an epoxy that took about 8 to 12 hours to set so I would have to leave the vacuum pump running over night.
I really love this phone and its aesthetics but a carbon fiber back would really look nice. I will definitely be following this thread. I would imagine you can skip the vacuum if you use sufficient weight while the epoxy is curing. My question is how to make a good mold to begin with. Good luck. I'm hoping my ex didn't throw all my carbon fiber away during one of her house cleanings. I had a couple of different weaves and weights.

I ordered one of those fake carbon fiber backs, but am definitely interested how this turns out. I just want something that's durable and looks good, but won't disrupt cell service, WiFi, GPS, or NFC.
Unless it's thick enough, real CF is also prone to breaking (or shearing). Probably even more than plastic.
I wouldn't want to drop a S3 with a real CF battery cover that's for sure. But I would agree that it would look sick.

When the mold is done, it will be 2 parts. One (pictured in original post) will be for the outer mold line (smooth outer surface of the phone), while the other will be the inner mold line (side with the plastic clips/tabs). The epoxy used in the molds should pick this detail up.
I'm not sure if raw epoxy will be as robust as the plastic for daily removal. However, if I use carbon fiber (or another opaque material) I can use additives to the epoxy on the inner mold line that will make it even stronger than the original without affecting aesthetics.

Yeah, the disruption of RF services is still a concern for me. Worst case, I can use black fiberglass to get the look carbon fiber without risking RF interference, but that seems a bit like cheating . I wish I could post a link for ease, but google "black fiberglass fibre glast" for a picture of this.

Making the mold is definitely requires the most patience and attention to detail, but the process is fairly basic. Once I can post links, I'll update the original post with a link to my blog that walks you through all the details of this particular project.
Although not strictly necessary with a 2 part mold (or almost any mold for that matter), I'll probably still pull vacuum on this to remove at much are from the final part as possible.

I assume you're referring to the fact that in thin layups you're unable to get fibers (the real structural part of carbon fiber) oriented in all directions?
While this is true (and often what makes carbon fiber weight beneficial to metal), fully cured epoxy tends to have very similar properties to generic plastic. So it shouldn't be much (if any) weaker than the original.
As far as dropping the phone, the original cover is so thin I don't think it provides any structure to the phone as is.

Thanks! I just skimmed the Rezound thread, and it looks like they did run into RF issues. I'm not sure if it is because the Rezound case is thicker (probably not), but this may be enough to make me skip straight to fiberglass. As noted in another post, there is black fiberglass which looks almost identical to carbon fiber (though this feels a little like cheating).

So today Ill be reviewing the Wheng Hook hard case (this is my very first review of anything so im sorry if it is a bit unprofessionally done.
So today I have finally received the Wheng Hook case from a seller on ebay and so far I have to say that it seems like a quality case. The packaging is some what mediocre yet nice at the same time. The seller adds a personal touch to the the packaging by adding a little sticky note saying thanks for purchasing the case (Its a little weird yet nice at the same time) The case consist of an outer bumper and a back plate that is to be positioned inside the case before putting in the phone itself. Something that sets this case aside from many is the fact that it is made for you to hold cards inside the case. This is a good addition for those who commute a lot and has things such as a smart trip card (a prepaid card for metro services for the train or buses). Instead of looking through your purse or wallet you can just place your phone on the pad as payment as you would the physical card. (Basically the metro bus and metro train station where I live does not support nfc so this addition in the case is amazing)
The phone fits very snug inside the case and it just simply feels very secure once placed inside. There are cut outs made for the volume rocker and power button so they are very easy to access. The cut outs for the camera, flash and speaker are also nice and fit leaving no gaps between them and the case itself. It also has a nice dip to it so there would be more difficulty for things smudging the camera. I have also noticed that there is just a small bit of weight added to the phone but this is great for those who things it is a bit too light.
The hook that is connecting the ends of the the bumper also seems very secure. It does not appear as if it will come apart so easily due to the fact it seems a bit awkward to take it out so it should resist falls just fine. The only real complaint I have about this case is the fact that the back plating seems to be a fingerprint magnet. Overall It was only $20 and I find it that you actually get MORE then what you pay for. It is an extremely solid case and I would highly recommend a purchase for those who are interested in it.
Link to the color I have purchased http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SAMSUNG...139051?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3cc8b1e36b
EDIT: I should also note that the picture of the bumper in the ebay link is WAAAAYY lighter then how it really appears in real life. The bumper is far darker.
Oh sorry here are just a few more pictures of the case that I forgot to add. As you can see its extremely thin,
Nice! Thanks for the review!

It's fantastic, thanks man.
Got this case today, it's extremely nice. If you're looking for a hard thin case, this is what to get. It's a million times better than those thing cases that just snap on and don't protect the top and bottom. This case feels extremely nice on the phone and the quality is great. Highly recommended.
Only complaint is I got the black/gray version and the black plate scratches and shows fingerprints too easily. I wish I had gone with the white glossy plate instead.
Not much of a reviewer here, but I ordered this from eBay about 2 weeks ago and it arrived today from China. Packaging was a bit strange and is advertised as a Flip Cover i9300. It comes with 1 driver for the screws which can be put on your keychain. 6 screws ( 4 for the phone and 2 extra on the driver ). The overall feel is pretty smooth. The paint seems a bit cheap and might chip easily over time. The buttons are a bit difficult to access.. thats my main gripe, but not near as bad as pressing really hard on the otterbox commuter. No dramatic signal loss that I can tell .. I benchmarked at -87 and with the case -95. Pictures behind the link to show it off in action. If you have any questions please post them here!

Thanks for the pics, I ordered the same case and am waiting for it to arrive. Glad to see the signal loss isnt too bad.

1. The back bit of the phone is the bit i want to protect this doesn't keep it from getting scratched and stuff.
2. It's ugly lol..

The bumper alone drops reception about 5db, adding a metal backplate would encase the phone in a faraday cage, thus drooping reception to 0. making it no longer a phone, be glad no-one has offered that, because anyone that bought it, would be wasting money.
wow i really like the look and shape of that metal bumper, I think it looks really nice!
I wonder if they have a version with buttons instead of holes.
I have a "fake triobump" without buttons, and its easy enough to use once you get used to it, I'd still prefer to have buttons for the cleaner look and ease of use.
the hex screw bumper with buttons would be perfect!
btw my "fake triobump" was slightly loose fitting at first, but it was very snug once i put on my screen protector and fake carbon fiber backplate (which also slightly recesses the camera :good I LOVE the fit and feel of this combination.

LOL the GS3 back is simple to replace and only $7 to get a new OEM one. I don't see a reason to add the bulk of a full case when I can just add a bumper to the part that's harder to protect.
The dimensions of this phone are 6.26" x 2.6" x .66" closed. I've been looking for a nice pouch to put it in rather than a case. I didn't find much but came across the idea to adapt a case for a different purpose to housing this phone. With that in mind here is a link to a case for eyeglasses that I think might work, what do you folks think?
https://www.lucrin.com/accessories/...ard-size-glasses-tan-real-ostrich-leather.htm
i bought a pouch for the fold and thats what i expect to use rather than a case.
I have use a microfiber sunglass pouch for my phone even if it has a case and screen protector. Helps keep pocket dust and stuff out and also serves as a cleaning cloth if needed. Been doing it for 6+ years now.
So I'm not Bat feces crazy, or at least not the only one who is bat feces crazy. I'm still sorting stuff out but I expect to be buying a nice high end leather pouch of some kind for this thing, ostrich, croc, etc. When you've spent this much money on a phone why not throw good money after bad?
Problem being when you're putting in or taking out of the pouch; sooner or later you'll fumble and it will tumble.
It's size, frequency of use and lack of sure handgrips almost guarantees it to happen.
Putting a tether on it might help, but a good case is mandatory to protect it.
B&H carries many different pouches and bags, their customer service is second to none. I use cargo and tactical pants to stash my 10+, works pretty well most times but only it's case has saved it from concrete hell.

Too many learned the hard way with the heavy near no bevel Note's when they fall with no case.
One case the owner's dog's tail whacked it off the table to patio oblivion.
Two layered protection systems generally work best ie hard polycarbonate shell with a semi hard urethane liner. Sort of slim pickens but the last two on this list here look promising.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-samsung-galaxy-z-fold-2-cases/?amp
Eye ball them carefully. You want some screen protection that will also double as false touch guards but not too excessive or it will impede usage.
Be careful that mic and speaker ports aren't covered.
At this price point these phones should have a hard tether point just like a camera...
not everyone is clumsy with smartphones. back in the day i use to use pouches all the time with big ass phones like the hitachi G1000 (google it) , the IBM Simon, and newer phones like the htc one max, and never had issues dropping it. lots of OG fold owners did not use a case on those phones and many had no issues.
sure some people are all thumbs with gadgets and that's why cases were made , but lets not post up that everyone drops phones because everyone don't.
matter of fact, my old school nexus 6 - i used a pouch with it, and still looks great all these years later...

Lowepro makes good gear. For a bare phone this is probably big enough as their internal dim specs tend to be generous. Belt or holster style mount with double lock velcro tabs that don't fail.

Yes, I'm also using the Shocksock that I bought for my original Fold on the Fold 2 now.
Fitbag, a German pouch, is also very good, but exactly fits the device, so even a thin back cover will make the device circumference too large.
