[How to] Make your own animated battery [TW] [mod] [beginner] - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

How to make your own animated battery
A Beginner's Guide You can do this for MK3 stock-based builds ~ i.e. the MK3 builds of MOAR or Wicked Sensations
News! This guide was featured on the news portal!
For example, this animated gif shows the battery charging animation from the one I made for myself. It uses my own app icon plus a google-like cube I drew. The animation I made looks like this (view in browser or click image). Fun for me...

This is actually very easy once you see what you have to do. The time-consuming part is editing 203 tiny images. Okay? Check it out.
Update: You can also make a huge animated battery - more space for more detail. Be creative! You could make all sorts of different animations with more space. I have ideas. I'm sure you can be creative. I made one with my google-ish theme. It looks like what you see here. If you want to make a gigantic animated battery, follow these same steps in this OP and just use the correct template file below. See also here for more info on the gigantic animated battery.
First get these things:
1a. Download this file Template_Animated_Batt.zip. for regular sized animated battery: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407569005
1b. Download this file BIG_Goog_Anim_Batt.zip if you want to make a gigantic animated battery: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407576520
2. Get 7-zip if you don’t have it. Free here: http://www.7-zip.org
3. Get Paint.net if you don’t have an image editor that can work with transparency/alpha layers and png files. Free here: http://www.getpaint.net/
4. Find or create two different images to use as a base. This is the reason you’re doing this, because you want a certain thing. Find or create two images that you want to use for this. You’ll use one image to make the 101 images for unplugged percentages. You’ll use the other image to make the 102 images for the animation when plugged in. They need to be 45 px X 45 px, transparent png files, or you can make them into that. For gigantic animated battery they need to be 42 px X 84 px wide, or you can make them into that.
Once you have your two base images at the correct size for your desired animated battery sequence, let’s get you started on the little bit tedious part…
Do these things:
1. Do not unzip, just navigate into your template zip to this folder:
Vrtheme/system/app/SystemUI.apk/res/drawable-xhdpi
2. TAKE THAT FOLDER OUT to your desktop or something (drawable-xhdpi)
3. Look inside that folder. Replace all of those images with whatever you are creating for your own animated battery image set. (That part can take a while.) You must use the exact file names for every one, and use the same image size as what I have in there. Just “save as” and double click on each one to replace, so you’re certain to not change any of the file names by mistake.
4. After you’ve done all your images, drag that shiny new drawable-xhdpi folder back into the zip file. Close the zip file. Rename the zip file so you know it’s the one you just made.
5. Make a backup then flash that zip to check out your work.
Or if you are a visual person, I recorded making one that I wanted to make for myself. Not my best video, don’t judge, but a quick thing if you need to see it happen. I had a robot voice do the talking in the video too, for no particular reason other than it’s funny to me. The video refers to the regular sized animated battery. Making the gigantic animated battery is the same process. Just use bigger images.

I see some downloads and video views. Anyone have a screenshot to show off your creations for animated batteries?
New Question...
Any interest in a tutorial for how to create your own custom toggles? Not talking about just replacing the image behind them but actually drawing the individual toggles out how you want? Let me know. Lots of creativity around here and I'm glad to support that. And newbies don't need to sit back and not take part in things like this kind of basic theming. I'll set ya' up.
Such as this example.

Okay, right on. I'll put it together in a few days. I think I don't need to start a new thread for a new tutorial of this nature. I will just keep it in this thread and change the title when I add the tutorial on drawing and replacing toggle images. I hope people will notice it's here!
I'll use the same format - explaining in steps plus making up a video demo with the robot-voice, same as what I put in the OP here. I'll do that unless someone has a suggestion for a different format. No need to reply unless you have a request or suggestion for how to make the toggles tutorial better than like what you see in the OP for the animated battery tutorial...
Otherwise, stay tuned.

Hey OP, how do you edit the SystemUI to show the charging pngs sequentially? The thread I followed to get the charging animation to work on my ROM has it only switching back and forth between the tw_stat_sys_battery_charge_x and the tw_stat_sys_battery_x

Hi Chad, I'd have to look it up, but rompnit and dazed already have it in MOAR and Wicked. So this is just a newbie guide about image editing and morph zips to replace existing images in the ROMs that have these things already.
I made a Superbowl battery and shared it on both threads, and got inundated with emails from people asking me to make these for them for their own teams. Thought I'd show the few hours of work involved in what they were asking me to do for them, while showing them that it can be time consuming but it is actually simple. Dat's about it.

You'll need to edit the 'stat_sys_battery_charge.xml' in the drawable folder.

Now, if only we can get someone to port all of these cool "Samsung only" features to other devices (specifically the RAZR HD, cough cough)...

I made a new, oversized animated battery for my own phone. I'm into this google-ish theme I've been working on, so here is another fun animated battery if anyone wants it. It has a sort of flickering lightning bolt for under 30, and then four google-color cubes that fill in from left to right. Unplugged images are the same in this one but you can always make them different if you want for your own.
This is an animated gif. If viewing on mobile, click thru to view animation:
Download here: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407576520
This works on Wicked Sensations MK3 to add some goggley color variety to your theme.
My screenshot shows it on MOAR MK3. To use this oversized animated battery as your stock battery in MOAR:
Go into Settings -> My Device -> MOAR Mod control - Battery Settings -> change color to white and uncheck alpha.
Backup first in case you don't like it. I like it. :good:
If you want to make a huge animated battery image set for yourself, follow the steps in the OP. Instead of using the template ZIP in the OP, just use my flashable zip fle from this post. Replace all of my images with your own of the same size, one by one. The little video in the OP walks you through how to do that. Enjoy.

Won't let me thank you but this looks awesome! And I love the Google themed stuff BTW, if you've got anymore.

Good stuff! :good:

@erikalin -- awesome job! Keep it coming!

Dude, those are sweet looking icons. I'm fonder of the darker colors, so IMO they'd look better on something like the Gloss Suite bar rather than the standard.

Excellent! For the EDGE indicator, you could have the center light up the same green for 3G. This looks great! Keep it up.

Thats a great idea!! Wouldn't be hard to do and implement will post with what it looks like
I would definitely love to use this on my theme (personal theme) Im glad you liked the idea, just seemed the natural progression. Only thing that could be a little different, making the greens the same shade, either the android green or the neon green, but i would definitely stick with one shade.

Ok so here is the newest look to the batt icons as well as a link to download the .png files if u want to use it on your own g1 just remember where u got them from lol The biggest diff on this one is that the battery icons are a brighter green.
However the only files contained in the .zip file is what is shown in this pic if u want the wifi signal and the cellular signal icons let me know. Everything for the battery / wifi / edge in and out all go in the framework.apk file under drawable. I also included a link if you want to download the HTC icon for your slider bar. Those icons go into apps/launcher.apk under drawable-land and drawable-port you also need to rename the files to replace what is there.
This worked for JF1.42 rc33 update as well as JF1.42 1.5ADP

Thanx!! I will check them out!
Pardon me for a stupid question, as I've just started going crazy with the rooting, customization, etc.
Are you saying that these icons need to replace the applicable files prior to a flashed update(ie, alter the build prior to installation) or can these be just updated with the flash utility after you are already running cupcake, etc?
Sorry if it's a dumb question.
Thanks.
You have to edit the update first then sign then install.
@ androidd,
I threw these in my phone, and they are working great. Im gonna try to implement my idea with the same green for 3G, the standard grey for EDGE, and red for GPRS. Ill let you know how it goes thanx for the initial files.
EDIT: I have edited the files and sent you a PM. Lemme knoe what you think.

No worries you have to edit the update.zip >system>framework> unpack framework-res.apk extract the res folder outta the unzip program and then edit the files you want edited (Easiest to just name the file the same as the icon your replacing and then replace the file that is there.) every thing is a .png file and I think most is in a drawable / drawable-port / drawable-land... after your done with all that you have to repack the update.zip file, then you have to resign the update.zip and drop on your sd card... then do a system update to implement the new changes... i.e Home and power button... etc
whew... lol Hope that sheds some light on this, I know it's a lot lol one tip I would say is watch your res folders.. android uses that file for alllll the icons it seems lol This is really a nutshelled version of how to do all this so you may want to check some other threads to get detailed info
So are all these png's already named correctly? Or do we need to search through the framework-res.apk to rename them?
EDIT: Nevermind just downloaded the zip. Can you post the extra icons also?

Here is how to gain a new battery using UOT kitchen:
Get your "framework-res.apk", there are many methods to do this, i'll let you pick one.
Go HERE and click the "file upload" tab, select "system files" and upload your framework-res.apk. To avoid problems please us a CLEAN framework-res.apk
Now click the "battery" tab, check "use this mod", click "Custom battery", any of these styles will modify your framework to give you 100 charging and 100 discharging images.
Scroll down to the bottom and select a charging animation style, I would reccomend hybrid.
Click the "summary" tab and "submit work to kitchen"
Wait for the kitchen to cook your files then flash your new framework from CWM
Once flashed you can then flash the Universal theme on top.

Cheers m8, I'm definitely up for a joint effort
Metamorph just changes the images you want instead of the whole apk, helps keep the file size down and can be applied across multiple platforms also.

Very nice theme!!!A battery %??
thank
Will this work for litening rom v1.5?
It should work on all ginger bread roms as its only images being changed so it shouldn't cause any conflicts, backup though just in case and please report back if it works.
I haven't changed the battery as I've noticed different roms are using different steps so some original images would show.
I'll have a look inside some roms and make a separate battery morph.
Hope this helps.
Thanks!! Works Perfectly for litening rom

% Battery, Blue Icons, No Carrier

*Note: this is for the Nitro from AT&T and apparently is not compatible with other versions of the p930*
*I made this before any of these new roms came out and as such it was meant for and has been tested on only the stock Gingerbread rom that comes with the phone. I doubt it will be compatible with the new roms.*
SEE Blue Icons and removed carrier logo! for instructions. Installing this SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk works exactly the same way as in that thread!
*SAME DISCLAIMER*
I AM NOT A DEV! I just like tinkering with how things look because I'm extremely picky. I am not smart enough to figure out how to save someone's phone if it gets bricked, I'm just sharing what I've played with since I want this forum to grow =). So everything I say, you are welcome to try, but keep in mind that it can always hit the fan, especially right now, while we still don't have a recovery mode yet. And since I lack the omniscience of the all-seeing all-knowing devs, I cannot be held responsible for what happens to your phone, if something undesirable (*ahem*, bricking) should happen! That said, everything I've done here I've done multiple times and tested, and it seems to work just fine in my hands so long as instructions are followed precisely. But regardless, try at your own risk! Until we have a nice recovery mode set up, you have to be willing to live on the wild side to mess with this phone, which apparently, a lot of us are...
This is a modification of my previous thread "Blue Icons and removed carrier logo!" Thanks to [email protected], I incorporated the individual percent onto the battery icon I previously used in this set. I didn't end up actually using the framework he posted since I wanted to include my other modifications, but since he was brave enough to try UOT kitchen modifications on his phone and it worked, I decided it'd be safe to use UOT to modify my own framework-res.apk to add the proper xml's for 100% battery (I tried doing it manually... possible, but oh my god, oh so painful). I then changed all the pngs for each battery to ones that I made (individually =P) from splicing the blue version of the stock icon battery with the percent value.

So attached are the SystemUI.apk and the Framework-res.apk for installing the blue icons with no carrier and now, with % on the battery. It will look like this on your phone:
***If you've already installed the blue icons with no carrier from my other thread, then to add the % battery, you ONLY NEED TO INSTALL THE FRAMEWORK-RES.APK. The SystemUI.apk is identical to the one used for "blue icons - no carrier". If you're starting from a stock phone, then install both.***
Instructions are the same as my previous thread.
**If someone wants a framework-res.apk that changes NOTHING in the phone, adding ONLY % to the stock green battery icon, let me know. I don't mind doing the work, but only if someone actually wants it =)**
Thanks again to [email protected] for showing me that the UOT % works for this phone and letting me tinker with his apks! =)
Just to add, this works just fine with the blue icons with carrier SystemUI.apk as well.
Thanks again for your hard work on this!

Vano, can you kinda give a quick walkthrough as how to accomplish it? I dont wanna brick my phone from doing the wrong things.
also, to both u and itiskonrad, is it just me, or the phone kinda takes a bit longer to boot up ever since I replaced systemui.apk? I feel it takes a few seconds longer than wat it used to be. Not a problem at all, just wondering if it was just me.
Just use instructions from this post: Blue Icons and removed carrier logo!
And use my SystemUI.apk file instead.
My phone takes about 30 seconds after screen goes black and before animations shows up, then another 30 seconds goes through the animation. I do think it was booting much quicker the first time I started it, but since then I've installed bunch new apps.
I can't say I notice a difference. Mine was quick to boot when it was still pretty bare, but I didn't change the SystemUI.apk until after I'd put all my programs and everything onto it, which already slowed down startup. Maybe there is a difference and I just don't notice it...? Not sure
Cool beans Guys! Thank you.
Just did this to my phone the other day, its awesome! This is perfect for me since all i look for in a ROM is stock look with speed and a battery percentage mod.
Great! Glad you like! Let me know if there are other random mods you'd like. There's something addictive about fiddling with xmls =) I've also been removing the carrier from the lock screen, getting rid of buttons that bother me... I think I have too much free time
@itiskonrad:
Do you still copy modified .xml files after they were compiled into "original" .apk?
I could use my compiled version before I tried deoxed process, since then (even though nothing has been changed on the phone) it bricks my phone every times I recompile original SystemUI.apk, even if I don't change anything, just decompile and compile.
Can't figure out what's wrong...
Yeah, pretty much.
Long story short, I never use recompiled SystemUI.apk or framework-res.apk in the phone. I don't trust them to not brick my phone, and I don't want to have to go through the effort of unbricking it. I always decompile original apks, change the XMLs I want, recompile the apk JUST TO RE-ENCODE THE XML, not to use the actual whole apk, and drag and drop the modifications (any changed XMLs or swapped PNGs I want to keep) back into the original apk that was never decompiled to begin with, just to be safe =) This way, I've never had a bricking issue
I did this to my phone today with ZERO issues. Thanks! It's perfect! Exactly what I wanted when I bought this phone. I'm a total noob at this stuff, but if you know how to navigate a computer and have basic copy/pase/move skills, this isn't hard at all.
EXCELLENT write up OP!

I'm interested..!
After the change SystemUI.apk & Framework-res.apk, I noticed a small problem in ringtones setting - ringtones list has duplicate. I mean that is all the audio files in the phone (system/media/audio/) are also displayed in notification ringtones and phone ringtones (now notification ringtones and phone ringtones has the same audio files). Is there swapping the SystemUI.apk & Framework-res.apk could affect this?

Haha, okay, I'll get right on it. You know this will wipe the changes you did to your lock screen, right? You'll just have to re-swap the lock pattern png's and xml's and stuff again, to get the minimalist lock screen back, that's all. If you REALLY want, I can make one just for you with those changes included, I guess =P

This is exactly what I've been looking for. Is there not something in the marketplace?
There are apps that can add an additional battery icon with percentage, but replacing the stock one with percent is unfortunately not so easy. I'm almost done with it, I got distracted with stupid work =) I'll post it here later today- stock everything, even battery, just with an added percent value on the stock battery icon.

[MOD] Battery Mod Collection - 05/05/13

hello lads of xda
i've decided that it was necessary for a battery mod collection thread because quite a few are scattered throughout several different forums and threads. my hope is to make a one stop place for them all to be found and used. this will be a work in progress while i collect them.
*note
none of the zips contained within this thread are flashable. to install, you must pull your own SystemUI.apk from your current ROM and place the images within res\drawable-xhdpi\. if you are unable to do this, upon request, i may be willing to make a flashable for you specifically if you attach your current SystemUI.apk. your provided SystemUI.apk must already support battery percentage increments of 0-100. i am unable to decompile and add that in for you because i would have no way of testing to make sure it works correctly (i can't load everyone's different ROM just to test one apk, this would be too time consuming).
also, please keep in mind that all previews are at full res. in other words, images *should* appear sharper on your phone.
YOU CAN HELP, TOO!
you can help this thread grow and be more productive by pointing me to battery mods i may have missed. just PM me a link or post it here and i'll take care of the rest

haha not sure why that happened but possibly because the SystemUI.apk you're currently running doesn't support 0-100 battery images.
edit: doniqcc might make one for you if you ask nicely. i could make it, but i couldn't guarantee it would work, since i'm not running that ROM.
to other forum members, please make sure the ROM you are running supports battery percentage increments of 0-100.

It doesn't necessarily have to support 0-100 you just need to make sure the existing image names line up with the ones you're putting in there heh.

it does if you're wanting images 0-100 to show up. the SystemUI.apk calls these images in via xml. if the xml only supports 0,15,28,43,57,71,85,100 (a stock SystemUI.apk), and you throw images in that go from 0-100, that SystemUI.apk is still only going to call in those 8 numbers, skipping over the other images. for example, when your battery is at 50%, it's going to show an image in reference to 57. so a battery sitting at 50% but displaying an image that says it's at 57% is inaccurate haha. hope that makes sense.
alright, added a few more. there's still plenty for me to get to haha. expect another update tomorrow! thanks to those of you who have PM'd me with your own! i'll get them on here asap

Yes I know. But I've lived with 10% battery increments on the DX for ages so I know how it is. Odd that they went with 71, 57 etc =\ Stupid increments but thats a lot less to deal with instead of 200 images xD
I will send you a copy of my new battery mod when I finish it tomorrow evening.

Hi Everyone - After a little nagging from a few of them, I've finally been persuaded to put together a thread
to share some of the mods I've made with the help of my NeatROM family.
Without them and _Sale_ 's NeatROM, I'd still be staring at a stock Samsung Galaxy SII, which is a scary thought.
I'm partial to 'tarting' up my phone a bit so most of this stuff is sort of 'fancy'.
I mean, we have a HOT color screen, so why not enjoy it!
This thread will be a WIP (work in progress) lots of screenshots to make and Zips to prepare.
Be patient, be kind and I'll even accept requests, within reason and time permitting, of course.
I work all day, have a family and this is just a hobby!

Blue Glow Theme mods Menu POPUPS, Dialer, Contacts, Mms, Phone, Framework and Lidroid Toggle Background. Also adds all the S4 Faces.
Pics show my Bottom Toggles - will only change the background behind your Lidroid Toggles to Blue Glow
Notification Panel Backgrounds for 23 Bottom Toggles
(Mod based on churapa's guide) with Brightness slider.
These are based on the expectation that you have already flashed one of engloa's 23 Toggle Mods.
Picture has been sized and laid out so as not to be hidden by the toggles or slider. The png used REPLACES the
notification_panel.9.png with a std png file.
My '23 Bottom Toggle with Brightness Slider' mod is linked in Downloads. I've added a 'Recent Apps'
button to the Notification Bar Header. The mod comes with a plain black background.
You can then flash the Notification picture of your choice after this.
For our Top Toggle users.
S4 Contacts faces to replace the 'Mr Nobody' look we got on our S2's.
This mods SecPhone, SecContacts and SecMms.
Framework Mods to tart up the Menu Popups.
Dialer Mod to match Blue Glow Menu Popups also adds all the S4 Faces.
To all those who have helped and guided me, I hope I've remembered you all. Please let me know if I leave anyone out.

Changing PNGs inside your APKs - Guide
Simple Mods for Toggles and other Icons for NeatROM.
This is aimed at beginners who, like me, have a Chernobyl moment when faced with coding and modding for Android.
It’s simple, like me, and it’s how I started.
Tools:
7Zip - http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
Gimp - http://www.gimp.org/ or
Paint.Net http://www.getpaint.net/ or
Photoshop.
Some form of android decompiler/compiler – search xda or Google.
Toggles:
The toggle icons or XXXXXX.png files are in two places depending on whether you are modding the stock icons or engloa’s 23 toggle icons.
Stock will be in SystemUI.apk - res\drawable-hdpi
These toggle icons are called:
‘tw_quick_panel_icon_rotation_on.png’ & ‘tw_quick_panel_icon_rotation_off.png’ and so on all starting with ‘tw_quick_panel_icon_xxx_off’ or ‘tw_quick_panel_icon_xxx_on’
Engloa’s, Wanam's and Sale's 23 Toggle mods are in lidroid-res.apk - res\drawable-hdpi
These toggle icons are called:
‘stat_airplane_off.png’ & ‘stat_airplane_on.png’ and so on all starting with ‘stat_xxx_off’ and ‘stat_xxx_on’
We will be talking about modifying the 23 Toggle Mods engloa has made for us.
With his kind permission and giving him all due credit of course.
What I do is use 7Zip to open the mod zip…..
There will be other files in the zip that we are not interested in for this exercise, HOWEVER, leave them alone, don’t remove what you are not sure of. Open ‘system’ to see below.
Open ‘framework’ to see below
Open ‘lidroid-res.apk’ to see below. This opens the apk (like a zip file) within the open mod zip(I hope that makes sense – it is important for later so get it right now)
Open ‘res’ to see below the contents of the ‘res’ folder. Remember the ‘drawable-hdpi’ folder…
Open it up to see its contents like below. If 7Zip is behaving correctly, you will still not have ‘EXTRACTED’ anything from the zip files.
Now for ease of use and to be able to view things a lot better, go back one step so you are at the screen below, use the up arrow just below the big Add button.
Now open up a new folder, labelled of course, and drag ‘drawable-hdpi’ into it.
Open that up to see all the png files inside. You will see in this pic that the ones I’ve modded are VERY different to the others and easy to find. View them as ICONS of course, not the file names.
You can now create new toggle icons to your hearts content and replace the ones here with your own.
No I don’t know where all of the other png’s are used.
As future ‘Recognised Themers’ and ‘Recognized Contributors’ and ‘ROM cookers’, that’s your adventure.
You can create all your icons and store them in a separate folder or in here, overwriting the existing ones.
Where you store them will change the path we follow when we update the mod zip for testing.
Use the same sizes as what you found the originals to be, would be my recommendation.
Example: 60X60 for the ‘six on a screen’ toggles in the ‘23 Toggle Mods’.
NOW to see whether your creation works.
I don’t have an emulator or know of one so I test on my phone.
You are going to replace all the modified PNG files inside the ‘res\drawable-hdpi’ folder in lidroid-res.apk.
Use 7Zip and open the mod zip following the same path all the way down until you get to here:
Now we simply drag the ‘drawable-hdpi’ folder containing all the new icons and all the unmodified icons across and drop it into the zip. It will ask you if you’re sure and of course you will be so ‘YES’.
You will see that the ‘drawable-hdpi’ folder now has a date when you modified it.
Use the ‘back’ button again and again until you get this message. Answer ‘OK’ and the lidroid-res.apk will be updated inside the main mod zip file.
Use the back button again and again until here and then exit out of the mod zip.
Your MOD is now ready to be copied to your phone and flashed via CWM for testing and more testing!
If it doesn’t work, well I’m sure you made a NANDROID backup BEFORE you started messing around, so restore to a working phone and try again.
That’s it – if it works and you think others might like it SHARE IT! Fame and fortune awaits.(Well maybe!)
Yes, there are ways to update these files on the phone using apktool and other ‘strange’ methods, but they involve changing file permissions and such and then you don’t have a readymade MOD file that you can share with everyone on the NeatROM thread.
Obviously this is just the basics. Once you start exploring the Villain Rom Theming methods I've used for most of the mods above, things change slightly and you will only have the pngs you have changed in your zip files.
That is altogether another guide and I would point you to the Villain ROM thread for more info.
NB!!
This will not work with the 9 patch or xxx.9.png files. (unless you are simply swapping out pngs and not editing them)
They are a special case and require special handling. There are guides here on xda for them.
Let me be the first one to congratulate you!
