About to make the jump to custom rom - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So got the gpad and have the urge to flash a custom rom, namely PA rom.
1. Will I be missing any good features from the stock rom? Only thing I can think of now is the remote but no much of a deal breaker.
2. And what is the best way to root?
3. When rooting, does it wipe the device?
Thanks

1 you ll be missing the lg apps, lg launcher and some widgets like accuweather's. There is a custom rom that is lg stock based named malladus but it is not updated often i think. Also there is a thread about the lg apps here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2594416, they re being taken from g2's forums and they say that they can be used in gpad but i havent tried them to see if they re working indeed.
2 there are 2 ways for root, kingo root app and dailingrin's method ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2553192 ), i strongly recommend you to use dailingrin's as kingoroot is suspected for stealing data from your tablet. Dailingrin's method is clean and uses adb commands.
3 no it doesnt wipe your device, neither installing a custom recovery does, unless you perform a factory reset

Thanks for the prompt reply. Are you using a custom rom?

I am, but I am using the LRS G Pad rom that is stock based. If you want to stay like stock then go with that one. If you want a Kit Kat rom there are plenty in the development section that work nicely.

Rooting doesn't wipe the device.
However if you are thinking of going to a non-stock based rom then you are best to full wipe the device.

i have cm 11, dont know if it's the best but it's the most popular rom. Gpad became faster in speed with more free ram available and less battery consumption than in stock. Although it is in nightly release state it is quite stable. Only issue that bothers me is that sometimes when i open my tablet it gets like frozen and i cant unlock it. The only way is to hard reset it by holding the power button down and then it boots normally after the reset.

I've flashed Mahdi, CM11, Paranoid Android, and Carbon so far. Of those only Mahdi and CM11 are what I would call fully functional. PA is just about there but it doesn't see the external SD card. All of them make the G Pad feel much faster and smoother than stock. You give up the LG Weather widget and the QSlide apps among other things, but almost everything you give up you can find replacements for in the app store.
I initially used dailingrin's script to root, and then a little later I installed TWRP according to the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551499 . After that I used TWRP to flash PhilZ Touch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588671) and started messing around with ROMs. As long as you use whichever recovery you install to make a Nandroid backup of the stock ROM before you start flashing new ROMs, you can always go back if you don't like your new ROM.
Its my impression after messing with it for several weeks now that the custom ROMs really unlock the potential of the G Pad's hardware and make using it a much better experience. And since you can always get back to stock with LG's recovery program, you really don't have anything to lose except maybe some time. Its worth the trouble, IMO.

to enter recovery this is the key combo:
- Press and hold Power Button + Volume Down
- When the LG logo shows up, release the power button only
- Now press and hold the Power and Volume Up button while keeping your hold on the Volume Down button
- When the factory reset screen appears, release your hold on all buttons
- And Select Up and Up Again

I've been doing exactly this, when I press up and up again, it still stays on the factory reset screen.
If I choose to do factory reset, will it wipe my nandroid and titanium backup files?

I dont think its working. On the factory reset screen I pressed power btn once then itasked to confirm and I pressed it again but Im still at that screen.
edit: working now with usb unplugged

You probably have tried this but if you do the key combo and you are at the factory reset screen you confirm by pressing the vol up button x 2. If you have the latest twrp it wont perform a factory reset but it will enter the recovery mode. If you cant enter its weird, with version 2.6.3.2 twrp it should had boot into the recovery.
IF everything else fails and you have to use lg's support tool to unbrick it you can enter in download mode and pull your titanium and nandroid backup with adb so that you dont lose them.

oh my bad, i forgot that you had to press the power button and not the vol up, glad you sorted this out. No i dont have the blue line issue but i have the light bleeding issue on certain backgrounds and brightness setting.

I think I will be returning mine because of the blue line problem and order from another retailer.
Whats the best way to go stock?

I have exactly the same question as i m thinking of returning to stock because of a bug in cm11 (everytime i power on the tab it freezes and i have to hard reset it to operate normally again, i ve tried flashing various nighlies and clearing cache and dalvic cache but it keeps doing that). Searchign at forums i found 4 posts of how to return to stock:
1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2622777
2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2543350
3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2590185
4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471370
Basically 1 and 2 are similar tutorials like 3 and 4, the originals are for g2 but it looks like the procedure works for gpad as well. In 2 and 3 people have reported that it worked for them.

NEED HELP

So, I have an issue here.
I rooted my wifes phone awhile ago, and recently she has been complaining that she has bad battery life, phone freezing, etc , eyc.
So I figured I would change roms and update CWM.
I relashed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967
and everything went fine.
Phone rebooted as if it was back at a default rom, but still rooted.
So I went through the phone setup and got it up and running.
I then put the updated ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1 PURPLE UPGRADE RFS/EXT4 file on my sd card and turned the phone off.
I tried booting the phone into recovery by using the 3 button method and now I am stuck on the black Samsung screen.
I pulled the battery numerous times and I cant get this thing to boot at all.
Someone please help as I am lost here.
Thank you.
Just odin back to stock ec05 and start fresh with one click root + cwm3.1.0.1......
Edit: unless you haven't made a band backup yet then you should try your best to boot up regularly and make a titanium backup

Thanks....... Found a thread about using odin, and now have the phone back to default.
I guess I will go ahead and try this all over again.
Thanks for your help.
So, I ran the one click root method found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967
Everything went smooth.
Did all system updates, etc.
Phone was running just fine.
Now when I go to use the 3 button recovery method the phone stays put on the black samsung screen once again!
Cant even boot the phone normally now.
Why is the phone doing this?
This makes no sense at all.
Hmm..... try to flash a pre-rooted rom (like chris41g's ec05 plus rom) and then try to use the 3button method...... if this persists then you should probably stick to using quickboot to get into the recovery.....
Here's the link to the rom ---- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061912

Yep happens to me as well..... Odin back to stock EC05 again and try a different cable.
If after Odin to stock and rooting you still have problems maybe it is the order you are pushing the buttons. Press and hold camera button first, then add pressing and holding volume down, then add pressing and holding power button, holding all three until the recovery menu comes up.

Is quickboot the answer though.
Because if the phones battery dies, then I might be stuck again seeing it wont boot at all after I power it down.

[Q] How to enter recovery mode using key combination?

I can use "adb reboot recovery" to enter TWRP 2.7 recovery mode, but I want to use key combination, please tell me how to that.
Hold Power + Vol Down > Wait until LG Logo pops up and release from both buttons > quickly hold Power + Vol Up + Vol Down again
It will pop up with some message about reset to factory settings, but it's all a bluff.
Hit Power x3 times to confirm and you'll get to TWRP recovery
Thanks, it works.
actually I enter this factory reset mode before, but i just don't know it a "fake".

That will depend on whether you've installed TWRP or not.
If you've still got the original recovery it will wipe it like it says it will, if you've got a custom recovery it will take you to it.
The standard recovery isn't a recovery like you're expecting it to be, if just has a way of resetting things to default without allowing you to do anything extra. OEM don't like giving people options but want a way to reset to defaults that the customer can use before needing to return a faulty unit which might not be faulty. If that makes sense.

From what I can tell, it's not a "bluff". It seems that the stock recovery partition would just automatically do a factory reset, so it warns you before booting the recovery partition. Seeing as you're non-stock, it just boots into TWRP/CWM. It's a valid warning that's simply set up in a weird way.

You don't.
We'll you might be able to but you're going about it the wrong way.
First you need to find the right forum for your device, then you read, followed by more reading.
At some point you've hopefully discovered that you should have done all this reading before you reset your device.
Also before pressing the post button on your next post, read it first to make sure it makes sense.
Thank you very much, I tried other combinations found on some web pages that failed. This one worked!
Issue remains.

Install LG software on your computer first. Then with the tablet completely off, hold VolUp and plug the tablet into the computer. That will enter LG download mode. Use the LG software on your PC to install the latest firmware available for your device. From there you can use the guides on this forum to go custom if you so desire.

[SOLVED] How do I boot into stock recovery?

From a full power off, how do I boot into stock recovery? I've tried multiple button configurations and none work.
EDIT:
I called T-Mobile and they said:
1. Power off
2. Press and hold the Vol - and Power button until the LG boot screen appears.
3. Release the Power button ONLY. Do not release the Vol - button.
4. After 1 second, press and hold the power button again. You should see the white recovery screen.
Use the Vol+/- to navigate and Power to select.
This brought up a Factory data reset menu on my H815.
Brings up factory reset on T-mo version H-811
That is the LG factory recovery.
thank you this worked
With a Verizon model, I had to keep holding both Power and Vol - until the recovery screen appeared. If I released and then re-held Power, as described above, it did not work.
When I hold down power and vol down, it boots to an IMEI display screen. It shows a long barcode. Can't get to recovery with the hold, release and hold down again the power and volume down buttons. Frustrating.

And I get a factory reset as well on my H811, even though TWRP was already installed and working on the recovery partition.
Something else funny going on, the OS seems to kill TWRP after the next one or two boots tho. Maybe I need to set the TWRP option to allow change of the system partition to read/write? (Since apparently it writes something there that prevents the OS from killing the custom recovery after it's been installed)

I've learned a lot with LG phones over the past few weeks.
The biggest thing is.. when you first flash over TWRP, you HAVE to reboot into recovery before you try rebooting the system, or else the bootloader will overwrite the TWRP install and replace it with the factory recovery.img. (You probably already know this.) To make sure it boots into TWRP first, since fastboot doesn't have a "reboot-recovery" command.. I just pull the battery then do the button combination to boot directly into TWRP. Doing this allowed me to say "YES" to the question "Do you want to factory reset the phone".
I don't know how many times I've wiped my phone because of this:
1. flash TWRP.
2. reboots (tries to hold the finger combo but failed - and didn't know it)
3. gets asked question - "do you want to factory reset the phone"
4. I hit YES expecting it to take me to TWRP - but instead it wipes the phone and puts stock recovery back on.
Just do this:
1. flash TWRP.
2. PULL THE BATTERY
3. Use finger combo to boot recovery.
4. When asked "do you want to factory reset the phone" - hit YES
5. TWRP boots in like 5 seconds.
This has worked now for my G4 and my V10 since they both have this issue. The V20 however does not (my current phone) - so hopefully LG is done with this crap!!
Good luck!

What was happening on my H811 was that it was either corrupting the recovery partition afterwards or just invalidating it or something because instead of getting back the stock recovery, I'd get the scary "broken robot" screen when trying to boot into recovery.

The technique I've learned to appreciate (which apparently is a new thing, and is now the suggested method for installing via fastboot according to the twrp.me website) is to load a copy of TWRP into RAM to do the flashing and rebooting. ("fastboot boot [TWRP_IMAGE_NAME]")
I try to avoid battery pulls as much as possible but I have never relied on them on a phone the way I have done over the last week (just had my G4 for about a week now) due to these funky mechanisms that LG has for getting into recovery/bootloader/download mode.

TBH I am fearful of even trying it now. (Especially since I just read about how a nandroid backup done from TWRP doesn't backup anything on the /data partition, either.. )
Which makes me even more appreciative of LineageOS's "advanced reboot" power button menu. :good:
One of the problems in my view with this LG system is that it can be very difficult to reliably press both the power and volume at the same time on this phone due to it's unusual placement of those buttons. Much harder than on a phone with those buttons on opposite sites of the device. Not to mention this silly "press both these, then release one, then 1s later press that one again" stuff.
And due to the way they designed these sequences, which among other things often have no way to easily escape them (can you imagine having this on a phone with a non-removable battery?? ), but worse, have defaults that progress to another state without any user interaction (because of the limitations of this control logic - eg, if you boot to bootloader but can't escape and don't do anything in 2 minutes, the device automatically reboots), I personally have to wonder if this doesn't make a significant contribution to the infamous bootloop issues that lots of people are having with recent LG's like the G4, G5, V20, etc.

Oh boy I need help

My wife's old S3 was given to me to use. I had originally flashed CM 11 on it and tried to upgrade to CM 12.1. In doing so I accidentally forgot to flash GAPPS.
I reverted to the stock ROM via Odin but now I'm stuck in a boot loop. The best part? The device's power button does not work and I cannot make any selections within the stock recovery to clear the cache and reset to factory settings.
Can anyone help me?
Pull the battery to turn off the phone and put it back in. If you feel the phone power up by vibrating upon putting the battery in and not touching the power button and go into loop then you have a bad power button. Do you have this problem? If so, then your only options are repair or remove the power button (there is an alternate way to power the phone up). Let us know if it is a bad power button or not so that hardware issues can be accounted for and go from there.
NOTE: The S3 has been known for some time now to have power buttons that fail. Mine did, and I opt to remove mine as I could not justify paying for a repair when the S3 is my backup phone and test platform and I have a method to power up. I use widgets for controlling power off, restarts, and recovery once powered up.
I no longer have a power button either and recently encountered this same issue after using Odin to flash a stock image.
My solution was to flash TWRP recovery using Odin, which allows one to perform operations using touch instead of the power button.

That works. Glad you found a way to get through it.

Bootloops have not been uncommon when reverting from LP to KK. Once you have flashed TWRP as others in the thread have suggested, you will probably need to wipe/ format the internal sdcard. The other remedy some have posted is to load a stock recovery and do a factory reset from within that stock recovery.
Not sure how to get into recovery without a power button.
Is the button loose or not functioning at all? You could try opening the phone and removing everything from the frame and see if the power button functions.
I haven't tried this with my SGS3, but on my Acer tablet I have booted into recovery using adb and fastboot. This requires connection to a computer, but not a power button. Unless you have a touch version of a custom recovery installed you still would not be able to select an item.
You may be able to flash a custom recovery using adb. I had broken my stock recovery on that tablet and used fastboot to reflash a working stock recovery.

Lg g pad v500 return to stock rom or root aosp

Hi guy, i have my LG gpad with aosp 5.1.1 (28/06/15 build) and i nave lost twrp and root...i try to flash twrp with adb but doesn't work ( problem with "waiting devices"). How can simply i return to stock ROM for restart rooting, flash twrp ecc ecc???
I have a mac but if is necessary i find a windows from someone of my friend
Which variant of G Pad 8.3? I assume not the VK810.4G, so is it the V500 or V510? Might want to change your thread title mentioning which variant and also something like "How to return to stock?".

To change the title of your thread, edit your first post, choose "Advanced" if it starts you off in Basic editing mode, then the thread title is in a field where you can edit it.
I don't know anything about the V500 although I would think TWRP would still be there somewhere, and have you checked in the Developer Options (tap build # 10 times in a row in Settings / About device / Software) to see if you can enable root there?

After flash the aosp rom i can't enter in twrp and i've lost root permission and in developer option there is nothing to solve this problem... the problem start because i've forgot to flash supersu zip for root access but seem strange have lost twrp too...
LG G Pad 8.3 Factory Reset Mode:
With Device Powered Off And Unplugged
Press and hold Power Button + Volume Down
When the LG logo shows up, release the power button only
Now press and hold the Power and Volume Up button while keeping your hold on the Volume Down button
When the factory reset screen appears, release your hold on all buttons
Follow On Screen Indications

Use this code to get to Factory Reset Mode. Attempt to do a factory reset. This will bring you to TWRP. Now flash SuperSU.

I have the problem of secure booting error....
That is no problem. It's normal when using a custom bootloader.

READ the OP.... says clearly, after flashing you need to reflash SuperSU to gain root again. To get back into recovery ... hold volume-down AND power, wait for LG logo to appear, release power without releasing volume-down, press volume-up and power without releasing volume-down... hold for a few seconds until screen dimms and release all. Wait for next screen, press power 2x and voila, you're back in business.
cheers
