NEED HELP - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have an issue here.
I rooted my wifes phone awhile ago, and recently she has been complaining that she has bad battery life, phone freezing, etc , eyc.
So I figured I would change roms and update CWM.
I relashed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967
and everything went fine.
Phone rebooted as if it was back at a default rom, but still rooted.
So I went through the phone setup and got it up and running.
I then put the updated ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1 PURPLE UPGRADE RFS/EXT4 file on my sd card and turned the phone off.
I tried booting the phone into recovery by using the 3 button method and now I am stuck on the black Samsung screen.
I pulled the battery numerous times and I cant get this thing to boot at all.
Someone please help as I am lost here.
Thank you.

Just odin back to stock ec05 and start fresh with one click root + cwm3.1.0.1......
Edit: unless you haven't made a band backup yet then you should try your best to boot up regularly and make a titanium backup

Thanks....... Found a thread about using odin, and now have the phone back to default.
I guess I will go ahead and try this all over again.
Thanks for your help.

So, I ran the one click root method found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076967
Everything went smooth.
Did all system updates, etc.
Phone was running just fine.
Now when I go to use the 3 button recovery method the phone stays put on the black samsung screen once again!
Cant even boot the phone normally now.
Why is the phone doing this?
This makes no sense at all.

Hmm..... try to flash a pre-rooted rom (like chris41g's ec05 plus rom) and then try to use the 3button method...... if this persists then you should probably stick to using quickboot to get into the recovery.....
Here's the link to the rom ---- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061912
qbking77 knows what he's talking about..... check out his awesome vids on youtube if you ever need a visual aid when flashing =D

Yep happens to me as well..... Odin back to stock EC05 again and try a different cable.

If after Odin to stock and rooting you still have problems maybe it is the order you are pushing the buttons. Press and hold camera button first, then add pressing and holding volume down, then add pressing and holding power button, holding all three until the recovery menu comes up.

Is quickboot the answer though.
Because if the phones battery dies, then I might be stuck again seeing it wont boot at all after I power it down.
I did odin it back to default as of now.

I thought maybe that was the issue as well, but I tried that over and over again with no luck at all.
Do you guys think maybe its related to the latest one click cwm method?

I'll do it....did you fully wipe first? Also some more information would be nice. Like..unlocked bootloader, custom recovery, etc. What you're running directly affect the steps taken to do anything.
i sent my tablet off to acer to get serviced because it would not boot up. when i got it back it had honeycomb. i got the ota upgrade to ics but it had "1.0014_cus" on the end of the ics version. im all stock, stock locked bootloader. i didnt want to go through all the rooting because this is my wife's tablet. i knew that it was a new update and the stock rom i had did not update. i just download the 1.0014_gen1 and renamed it update.zip and did the stock recovery update. thanks for replaying.

Ok, have you done a reset on it yet?
Power off tablet
Hold volume UP (furthest from lock switch)
Press and hold Power
Once it gets to the acer screen let go of power and toggle the lock switch a few times while holding Volume UP
should do a reset
reboot and report back.
Theres videos on youtube if you need a visual aid.

Thanks it worked. I did notice some sluggishness when doing somethings. but the sound works. i also noticed that when you are runing a app sometimes it jumps back to the home screen when just holding it. but thanks for the help.

The jumping to home happens to my wife almost constantly, but never to me. I think it's part of the hyper sensitive issue these have, combined with how it's being held at the time. I guess the way I hold it doesn't trigger it, but my wife does somewhow.
The sluggishness thing happens on occasion anyways, I've seen it alot on Acer and Acer based ROMs, but I don't seem to run into it on CM9 or Jellytime. Occasional reboots will also help with that.

S3 won't boot, load CWM, go into download mode...

Alright, so I have an i-747 (AT&T GS3) running AOKP Jellybean (8.28 build) with the KT747 kernel. I just tried to install Chainfire 3D using the automated installer, and when the phone rebooted, it stuck at the Samsung Galaxy S3 logo until I pulled battery. So I tried rebooting into CWM - same problem. And again with download mode. Even after pulling the battery for a good 5 minutes, nothing works. Am I bricked, or is there some fix for this?
If you can get into CWM your not bricked. If you haven't backed up your phone there is a good chance you will have to start fresh. Its always a wise decision to do a nandroid backup via cwm before doing anything major. Including installing chainfire.
Have you tried wipe/factory reset in CWM?

Yeah, I made a nandroid just this afternoon, but I can't actually boot into CWM at all. As in, I turn on the phone (power+home+volume up), it gets to the Galaxy S3 logo and just hangs there. If I could get into CWM (or download mode) this would be about a 10 minute fix, but I'm kind of out of luck here.
Huh. After another battery pull, it let me boot into download mode. I'm gonna try to reflash to stock and hope for the best.

I doubt it's bricked if he got it into download mode. I'm sure he's flashed it and even got his wallpaper back up by now. Please let us know of you've managed to solve this or not MrPhantom.

Curious?
I know its technically "Solved" but does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I have a Verizon GS3 and it's happening to me. I try to boot and it vibrates once and doesn't turn on. Recovery does the same thing. But going into Download mode works. Odin back to stock as we speak but I'm just curious what went wrong. I just did a clean install of a rom, set it all up (working at the time), set it down for the night and woke up to it like this.

Same thing happned to me but your not bricked. You can get into bolth download and boot mode easy
Here is how you do it.
RECOVERY MODE
Unplug the USB cable.
Shut down the phone.
Hold down the 'HOME' + 'VOLUME UP' buttons and press the 'POWER' button for about 5 seconds to enter Recovery Mode.
[edit]Download Mode
Save that somewhere. Make sure do it right. I got stuck also and thought I couldn't get into recovery but I had to do it right (it hit recovery mode first try) I have learned that most people do it slightly wrong. Make sure follow directions
Download mode
Unplug the USB cable.
Shut down the phone.
Hold down the 'HOME' + 'VOLUME DOWN' buttons and press the 'POWER' button for about 2 seconds until a WARNING! Screen appears. Press the 'VOLUME UP' button to enter Download Mode.
To get out of Download Mode, simply press and hold the power button until the phone restarts
if helps hit thanks.
Just save that to a text file somewhere
I have also soft bricked when I deleted my rom once on accident. I dunno how I did it but I would get stuck at the TWRP screen. It wouldn't go to download or anything however when I plugged it into odin it saw it .... I even had a soft brick when screen went black from a bad boot animation and same thing.. and I had one bad soft brick where it took about 100 trys to get it into download mode (black screen) but odin detected it. I spent like 4 hours working on it.
I think
1. People don't follow directions correct (they do it a little wrong) which is enough if your phones messed up for it not to work.
when your phones normal it can get into recovery or download easy but when its sick you got to do it perfect.
2. I think something wrong with the phones (my s2 never had any issues in 2 years of owning it) S3 has tons of issues from usb, to bluetooth, to these soft bricks I have had)
3. Roms play a big part
4. I also think the way storage works in this new phone causes lots issues I dunno why just what I think
anyway Like I said now when I have a isssue I open text and read it and make sure I do it right and 95 percent of the time it was my fault I wasn't doing it right. K just my thoughts
when i try this on my verzion s3 it wont load back into the CWM after installed to finish rooting. it just goes back into the android system recovery. tried it about 10 times and nothing different

Need help!! s3 wont go into recovery/download mode.

Hello! So I'm very new to rooting and roms but I'm very tech savvy.
So here's the situation... I buy a 1 month old s3 from someone and he had a AOKB ROM installed on it. It worked perfectly when I got it but then I decided to revert it to stock and factory settings. I don't know much about aokb ROM but I guess it wouldn't matter since I was just gonna flash the stock ROM on it with Odin. So I turned off the phone and try the recovery boot button combination and it didn't work, it just started normally, I did it several times and suddenly it wouldn't boot anymore. I then try to go into download mode but it wouldn't either, it would just restart and freeze in booting splash screen.
I'm panicking and don't know what to do. How can it possibly brick from resetting and why wouldn't it let me access the recovery/download menu I thought that was standard on all androids no matter what ROM you have installed in it.

Is it dead? No you can't brick from button combo. I'm guessing the battery died. When you charge it you can then try the button combo or boot it up and go into adb and type adb reboot download

The button combo is holding volume down and the home button while powering on for recovery, or Volume up and home for download.
hey im in panic mode guys, i just got my brand new phone, instaleld the OTA update to JB, then i odin the preroot version everythign worked perfectly.
Then i tried a custom rom with CWM, the marshmellow perfection one. It flashed and worked, but I wanted to go back to stock
So I odin flashed back to the preroot JB rom i had used before, and now it it hangs at the Samsung boot logo after reboot.
Odin says Pass and everything.
I also cannot get into any sort of recovery other than download mode.
What can i do to fix this???
Try this....plug charger in....when it completely shutdown you'll see battery charging icon on screen.....press volume up, home and power.....release power when you feel it viberate..... release everything else right after you notice blue text in upper left corner...

Got AllShare Cast dongle today and got it working with Stock rom, as I understood that it doesnt work with custom rom - I went ahead and tried with - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575 and expected, it didnt work so this involved triangle away etc
Phone had no issue, went to TWRP recovery
So now, I though I will try something else like - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984546&highlight=allshare
But I got stuck, it wouldn't go to recovery mode, it was stuck on SAMSUNG
So I ODIN'ed it and put stock back - I317MVLALJ2_I317MOYAALJ2_I317MVLALJ2_HOME.tar.md5
It went successfully, and then it rebooted but its stuck at SAMSUNG which is flashing with colorrs
I have seen this happen before with my Galaxy and S3 and the fix was to goto Recovery ( Stock ) and factory reset and it fixed it
BUT I just can't get into recovery mode
I then ODIN'ed TWRP but again, can't get into recovery mode
VOL UP + HOME + POWER
I am stuck big time, what else can I do?

When you Up/Home/Power do you get download mode? I had a similar issue and had to flash back to stock. If you can get download mode then not all is lost.
I will see if I can find the post I used.

I did flash to stock and then get back to Recovery but all is fixed and here's the explanation
When I had TWRP - I press VOL UP + HOME + POWER in any order, and it went to recovery, my last try was CWM which ironically never installed the 1st time I installed recovery and read this post in some website that WAIT for Samsung and then release power, i was like - lets try
So VOL UP + HOME + POWER all the same time, only release power when Samsung logo came and voila, I was in CWM
Pheww.I was like, I am dead

I am currently on JEDI 6.1 on my Note2 I was looking for something more flashy so I tried CM10. I guess I got something wrong cause I got constant boot loop. I thought all was lost since this is my first droid. But, went to stock, then back to Jedi. Glad this forum is here to help. This is what ultimately saved my @$$ so I am glad I didn't brick my phone and I am awaiting the Paranoid Andorid port to get done. I did install the 7100 version. nothing worked but man it sure was pretty.

You wanna try the N7105 Rom, its superb but I can't use it as I just got the Allshare cast dongle and that only works with stock rom/rooted so waiting for fix, but if if u really want a good rom, I would use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575 type 3 - the blue theme is divine
I was on jedi b4
if you can get the phone to power up then you're not all lost.
I would do a md5 check of the .tar you flashed and see if it was a bad download...
even if you can't get to recovery via the button combo have you tried download mode? try to odin to something different - if you want stock rooted, try the "how to root without tripping the flash counter" thread and download that dude's root as it's an entire ROM essentially that is installed to your phone. The flash will take much longer than you are used to, so don't worry about it and resist the temptation to pull your phone or cancel the flash midway through.... it's almost 1 GB of info that is being rewritten so it'll take time.
if you can't get to DL mode you can use a jig to force the phone into it and odin from there.
hopefully that helps out.

SGH-I747 Won't Boot After 4.3 Update

I've been looking on multiple other threads for the last few days now but haven't found a fix. I updated my S3 from 4.1.2 to 4.3 through the phone(AT&T recommended update) and it worked for 4 days but was very glitchy. Then it shut off one day with 50% battery and wouldn't turn back on. I tried pulling the battery and turning it on but it would generally fail after it reached the galaxy s3 logo. Can't stay in download mode or recovery mode without it crashing. I sometimes I found that if I leave the battery out for an over 4-5 hours, it can get it to boot and reach my home screen but it soon crashes. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I have been without a phone for about a week. Thank you.
Can you do a factory reset in recovery mode? Not sure if you phone will stay on long enough.

Unfortunately no, the phone doesn't stay on long enough. And I've tried with and without the phone plugged into a charger or my computer but neither really help.
Any warranty left on your phone? If not, you could try flashing a custom recovery in Odin if the phone will stay in download mode, then wipe data, cache from the custom recovery.

No I'm pretty sure the warranty is ended since I've had the phone for about a year and 3 months and don't have any insurance through AT&T. How would I go about flashing a custom recovery? Is there a link to a tutorial you could refer me to? Just in case I could get the phone to stay in download mode long enough. Thanks for all your help by the way. I really appreciate it.
Okay. Download the tar version of Philz Touch Recovery from here: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att
Install it using Odin by selecting pda and browsing to where you saved the CWM file. Flash it, go into recovery, and wipe.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

The flash worked and now my phone is staying in recovery. It got into recovery mode and did a factory reset. Now I started up and I started setting up my phone (wifi, google account..) but it crashed multiple times during that setup time. I haven't reached the home screen yet. Occasionally it will boot loop once or twice before reaching the setup again......
So I finally got to the home screen and it crashed (after about 7-8 crashes and reboots). Could it be 4.3 or maybe a hardware problem?
Could be either but let's assume it is an OS issue. Did you flash a custom rom?

No I didn't, I don't know of one that I should flash? Recommendations?
Also, my phone was just on for about 8 minutes and was working. I noticed that my power/lock button was extremely touchy and i would barely have to touch(not press it) to lock it. If I press it (like I use to to lock it, it pulls up the power off/options and if I don't do anything about it, it will shut off and restart(boot loop) until i pull the battery and turn it on myself. So I think it might be a problem with the power button being too touchy that it just turns off. Do you know if there is a way to disable the power button?
I run Cyanfox on my brother's S3 and it's pretty stable: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480007
Yes, the power button could be causing the problem. Sounds like the power connection and/or board may be defective.

Alright I will try to see if I can get that to work. Now the phone is rarely making it to the home screen and if it does, it only stays for at most a minute. Generally it's back to it only getting to the initial Samsung logo.
Is this with the stock ROM?

Yeah it is. All stock. The only change that I made recently was the firmware update to 4.3.
Okay, definitely try Cyanfox to see what happens.

Okay, I'm reading instructions and it says the one of the prerequisites is to have the phone rooted. Is that really the case?
No need to be rooted. You can just flash it in recovery.

Alright well it worked right off the bat for about 15 minutes and then crashed. Now it is doing the same sort of thing it was before. It will rarely make it to the home screen but typically just crashes before it gets there. It will crash and then only sometimes turn on when I press the power button. Other times I have to pull the battery and occasionally it will boot loop once or twice.
I think the power button is now the issue.
