Anybody else getting this when trying to pull up the desktop version of a website? I called customer support and politely explained what I was experiencing and I was told (that she was posting this on the T-Mobile forum) she'd get back to me on Thursday.
Workaround, perhaps?

I've heard of others having this happen, but I haven't experienced this myself. What data plan are you on? I wonder if that is a factor? I'm on the $30 Walmart plan.

I wasn't even tethering! I was just trying to pull up desktop sites instead of mobile.

I've replied to every one of these threads it seems. Do just a little research here.
T-Mobile "catches tethering" by filtering UAstring (user agent strings). Problem is, people can have desktop UAstrings on the phone, because they request desktop sites or use 3rd party browsers that only use desktop UAstrings.
Basically theres not much you can do (some things work for some people, no solution worked for me). You can call in and ***** about it but in my experience I wasn't able to get anyone to tell me anything they either literally had no idea what I was talking about, or refused to tell me anything.
In 14 months of T-Mobile service I've only had this happen 1 time, and it was for about 2 weeks then it stopped.

It literally has nothing to do with you tethering. You can never turn on tethering and still get that message. They are only filtering UAstrings.

I just started having this problem today, and I spoke at length with a tmo tech who really couldn't help me much, said I needed to talk to Samsung (lol!) And unfortunately the cache/cookie clearing didn't help me at all. I think I'm going to call TMo back again...
UPDATE: Ticket has been submitted to the TMo engineers, so hopefully this will get fixed permanently at their end. This tech was much more helpful and actually listened when I told him was was obviously going on with the UA string filtering, etc. This sucks though...

I know this has nothing to do with tethering but it first showed up after I downloaded a massive file from tethering.

Good luck. My ticket got "submitted to engineers" with an assurance that I'd hear back in 3-5 days and I never got a call back.

I actually talked to someone in customer support and they seemed to understand that I was not tethering, just trying to access a desktop site. She got back to me with sorry don't know what I can but give me a couple days .
She actually got me on the phone with an engineer who kept asking me about the UAstring. Finally, I had to get into an in depth conversation about ICS and why the UAString is irrelevant. I think it hit home with him and he said they're working on a solution. He promised to keep me in the loop, let's see how that goes.

Hey thanks for posting your update. I also feel fairly confident that I conveyed the idea that TMo is erroneously using the detection of a desktop UA string as a means of detecting tethering users, and that users of all the best new phones (like the GNex) only ever use the desktop UA as these phones with their big displays and Flash capabilities have rendered the mobile site versions useless. So clearly its on them to sort it out ASAP, otherwise they are going to have thousands and thousands of really pissed off smartphone users.
BTW I'm giving them til Monday afternoon to return my call at which point I'm going to start calling tech support every day and really be up their butt about it. Plus it just so happens that I'm now no longer under contract with them, so I'll let them know if they can't sort it out quickly I'll take my business elsewhere.

By the way to the OP, might we be able to change the title of the thread to something like "Tmobile using desktop UA to detect tethering, block full websites?" just hoping that anyone and everyone who might be experiencing this to be able to easily spot this thread and know exactly what it is about so that they can chime in with their info or experience.
And actually it would be nice if Android Police or Droid Life picked up on this and posted a story.... perhaps a couple of emails might be in order this evening

Well I just sent email tips to both AP and DL, and linked to this thread so that they can see the screengrabs, etc.
As for the *****ing, I may not be the first to call them about it, but I promise you I can be a bigger pain in the ass about it than pretty much anyone. I'll call and have a ticket processed every day if I have to! The other odd thing that I can't figure out is, I'd been running my Nexus One for over 2 years and now my GN for the last 3 months (on desktop UA for every day of it) and only this morning did I encounter this for the first time. I just wonder, why now all of a sudden? Makes no sense.

[Q] Is there a way to Force Roaming on the Samsung Epic?

Hey there all, I just got my Samsung Epic set up on Sprint again the other day and came back to the reality that Sprint's network does have holes in it in places. I downloaded a PRL that allows roaming on Verizon with EvDo data, but I'd like to be able to force roaming on demand when needed without using that other Verizon only PRL (I don't carry a computer and USB cable around everywhere in my pocket anyway). I've also tried version 1.6 and 2 of "RoamControl" and it is not working, for me anyway on any PRL I've tried so far, Legendary ROM version 2.1 or 2.2, or the latest version of the Samurai Kernel.
I saw somewhere there was a really complicated tweak you could do with the Evo that would just put the "roam only" option back in the regular network selection menu where it's supposed to be, but I haven't heard or seen of that working on a Samsung.
Any ideas?

Calm down there dude, it was just a joke. It was a joke because in my opening post, I already stated that roam control doesn't work, and your post was a hasty reply that consisted of a lonely link to a thread promoting roam control.

I'd really like to avoid paying for functionality that should be present in the software. I'll just stick with the free working version, but since that apparently does not work, we need to find an ALTERNATIVE to Roam control beside putting a different PRL on (I don't know about you, but I don't carry a computer or even a USB cable in my pocket that much).

Support the hard work of the devs, it's not their fault manufactures don't know how to make a phone to everyone's personal preference. Because of some awesome developer there is usually a app that'll fix things. Case in point I payed for roam control and use it w/ no problems.

I was very calm when typing my response. I simply stated my issue with your response to my suggested link.
I read your OP and saw what you quoted from it. I figured you were pirating Roam Control when you said it didn't work. If you don't wish to purchase the application, then that is fine. The link was provided because it is the easiest solution to your question.
The link I shared wasn't a promotional thread for Roam Control. It was an information thread at the time when Roam Control was in limbo on the Market. (As you can see/read in that thread's OP with the update edits)
At the moment it looks as if you have 4 choices remaining:
1. Buy a license for Roam Control.
2. Use CM or AOKP (assuming they offer forced roaming options in their vast array of settings)
3. Keep searching.
4. Give up.

Love having the ability to force roam when I'm at work in a dead spot for sprint. Also the roam control widget works great as well.

I'm pretty sure the developers got it figured out. From what I've been reading, version 1.4 works for most people. Do you have a copy of it? Why would the free version not work?

Isn't option 2 a set of ROMs though? I already have what is possibly the best available ROM for the Epic - Legendary.
I've actually been doing a lot of searching too. Somebody found a complicated mod of a certain file on the Evo, but I'd like confirmation that it works on the Epic before I go in there and wreck something (I'm really leary of the whole process altogether).
Apart from those, I need the help of the community.
Any ideas?

There fixed your statement. Short answer You must pay to play or develop you own app. At least until a rom has this capability that works. I know CM7 and CM9 have the options but they currently don't work . Who knows when or if they ever will.
As far as you question "why won't the free one work" ... well there is no free one. The download is free but you have to purchase the license a one time $3.99.

Most of the replies here work it out, some with the dreaded roamcontrol app, some within the custom rom itself if you go that route. Good luck!

I was hoping for a fee solution, so in reality, I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know aside from the fact that people have had limited success with the free version of Roam control.

Well, that's not entirely true. There was a free version on Mobilism for a while, but they stopped developing it. I'll try the paid version though.

Dude. Roam Control is cheap. Are you really complaining that an app that you pirated does not work... I purchased it and it fully works. There is no free version as it is a payed app. The developer of the app has spent more than $4 of his time to make the app. You do not just say "I have an idea for this app" and have it just appear. It takes alot of hard work and time to make an app... buy it or do not complain.

Roam Control doesn't always work
Hey all.
Just a heads up, but roam control doesn't always work... even if you buy it. I have an Epic 4G and bought the app with no luck. Yes the app does what it's supposed to do, it puts the phone in roam only mode. That's great, but here's the catch, for samsung phones, they only roam in 800mhz mode. Some parts of the US are 1900mhz only. This leaves the phone with no signal at all. Happened to me with the full paid app v 2.2.0.
Read the FAQ at roamctrl.com if you don't believe me.
Also found this blog where someone found a way to force roaming without changing PRL. Looks like you still need a pc and usb cable though.

Interesting. I was always under the impression that Sprint was exclusively 1900Mhz and that Verizon was almost all in that 800whatever Mhz band.
The post is very interesting though, I wonder if there is a way to do that right on the device itself.

Chrome beta on T-mobile question

After reading around a little there is a known issue with t-mobile mistaking chrome beta's user agent as a desktop browser and redirecting you to their tethering plan signup page after you hit a certain data limit (200 MBs?).
I plan on using chrome as my primary mobile browser because of the syncing features, but it would be pretty terrible if I can't use it because t-mobile blocks it.
Does t-mobile mistake chrome's user agent even when you are not requesting desktop mode? Also, apparently t-mobile fixed it according to this link (support. t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4309 without the space), although I'm kinda of skeptical due to others on this site saying they are still experiencing these issue just a couple days ago.

Still happening to me as of last week. They're completely aware of the problem and are working to fix it. My understanding is that T-Mobile is going to start re-thinking how they "catch" people tethering.
Reading that support article, it seems that pertained to the stock Browser as well. I never experienced it there, although I'm not a heavy Browser user and have disabled it since Chrome Beta came out. I'm sure it'll take some time but if that support article is correct they've implemented a "fix".
Just decided to open up Chrome Beta and load some pages. Not getting redirected, as I was last week (~130mb of Chrome usage at that point).

I was getting it regardless of whether or not I had "request desktop site" checked.
Now it seems that w/o "request desktop site" I can browse fine (even to sites w/o mobile versions), but as soon as I check the box, I get redirected. Also, if I go to a website (www.theverge.com for example) and am taken to the mobile site (as I should be), and choose "full site" at the bottom of the page, I can load and navigate it no problem. But using the forced "request desktop site" is a no-go. Kinda crazy.
This definitely isn't a fix. And telling people to download another browser as a form of a fix is pretty insulting, actually.
Another funny thing I find about the support article is that it's supposed to be about fixing the redirect problem in the stock Browser, and they recommend a fix as downloading another browser, such as Chrome... which has the exact same option of "request desktop site" and the exact same problem!

This happened to me once last week, everything's been fine since then though.

I have yet to see this happen to me. Never seen this happen, even when I tether and I don't have a tethering plan. Haven't used that much data for tethering recently but several months ago I was using many (3GB+, for online games and similar) with no problems at all.
Curious to know if this is related to my plan - I'm on a grandfathered postpaid plan but soon switching to the $30 Monthly4G plan. Guess I'll know soon ._.

Well it's not necessarily how much data you've used overall or used tethering, but how much data you've used in Chrome (desktop or phone). Once you hit a certain level (~200mb, although I'm seeing it sooner) of Chrome data usage w/ a desktop UAstring they flag your account for the redirect.
Even when you're getting the redirect, you can use a UAstring switcher on Chrome or use Firefox/Safari and it'll work just fine. You can play games or tether to an XBOX or whatever and use all the data you want. This just redirects webpage requests on certain desktop UAstrings. It doesn't block other traffic.

For $5 more, we get unlimited calling. And Mexican providers are slow, and your GNex probably costed around $700-900 USD, atleast 8000 pesos, ours was $400, so we win. Gtfo if you're not going to help or add to issue at hand.

This is a general statement, besides sprint we dont have any truely unlimited plans, why do they care if you use the limited data you have why not just allow teathering and add data refill options

Tmobile tether block on galaxy nexus?

So I usually tether my phone while I travel...I'm not a heavy user, I never get near my 5gb limit. Today while streaming big bang theory from xfinity site about 10 minutes into it the video stopped and when I tried to reload the page I was forwarded to tmobiles hot spot page. I've been able to stream before with no issue
I've always been under the impression that on a nexus they wouldn't be able to tell unless they started doing the at&t method and searched for user agent strings.
I do have the tmobile my account app installed and I thought perhaps maybe they did a recent update to the app that might flag tethering. What's odd is that only certain sites were forwarding me to tmobiles hotspot page ie xfinity and netflix. But Facebook and google searches still worked.
Anyway....with a chrome extension (on os x) I was able to change user string to android 2.3 and everything is unblocked again.
With all these recent talk about tmobile cracking down on free tethering. I am getting worried that they are catching onto us at the expense of risking breaking chrome on our phones or any desktop versions (if they are indeed blocking certain user strings)
Has anyone else had this issue lately? Also I've heard the 5gb plan with one s brings a tethering plan. I current have the 5gb value plan with nexus. Does anyone know if we're eligible for this as well?

I didn't think it would happen, but it just did. This is outrageous! I've never had TMobile block my tethering before.

Let's not get into the weeds here, this has been discussed SO many times before. Whether you pay for the hotspot upsell or not, if you're on a tiered (or throttled) data plan, you should be able to use the data any way you please.
OP, I really don't feel like posting a couple paragraphs about how this works, as I've done it so many times before. Basically, they detect you're on a "desktop" browser by looking at your UAstring and redirecting you. This is messing with people who use "request desktop site" on Chrome for Android, which is annoying, and they're actively working to figure out how to handle this situation.
To "fix" this: use a UAstring spoofer on your desktop browser to change it to Firefox or Safari, then reload. Done.
For more info, simply google "T-Mobile tethering redirect error" and start reading. This isn't anything specific to the Galaxy Nexus, and isn't anything new at all. It's been happening for years.

because it shouldn't matter how you are using the data they are providing, especially if they have a tiered data plan. He pays for 5 gigs a month he should be able to use it however he wants.

I am not advocating what they are doing. I am simply saying it is a service they charge for and they have a right to block it if it is being used and not paid for. It might not be fair or right to us, but that is how they run the company so that is how it is.

I was just taken a bit off guard because I've been tethering with tmobile since the nexus one. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one!
I didn't think it would become that big of a deal for tmobile since nexus/rooted users are a minority (I think). Maybe some users heavily abused tethering and racked up an insane amount of data.

T-mobile is doing a 'soft' crack down on tetherers. I tether regularly at work, but 95% of the time it is to tether my tablets (HP touchpad and galaxy tab). I have the 5GB data plan and I have never even used more than 1GB in a month.
I tethered my phone to my laptop all week last week and on Friday I was hit with a redirect that steered my web browser to a web page telling me that I could add tethering to my account. What is interesting is that the redirect page came in about 30 minutes after I had used bit torrent to download a 1.34 MB file. Loading up large web pages or videos on youtube the previous week occurred without issue. Even after getting the redirect on my laptop, tethering to my android tablet worked just fine.
My guess is that T-mobile is watching their traffic and flagging the types of traffic that cause high network usage (which bit torrent certainly does).
As for the ethics of tethering, the carriers don't really have a leg to stand on. They want to charge you more money without providing any additional services. After all, I went out and found the tethering program that *someone else* wrote and compiled for android and installed it on the phone that I own. What did the carrier do? They sold me 5GB of data and they should honor their end of the deal.
They can start complaining about tethering when they start refunding me money for voice minutes each month that I end up not using.

You pay for for data, why should you not be able to use it as you want. By doing this t-mobile broke many third party browsers and are now claiming that its not their fault and that they do not support third party apps. In reality the third party apps are working fine, just have a differ user agent string them t-mobile's. Even the full blown ICS browser its blocked in many cases.

Been using Chrome (Version 20.0.1132.17 beta right now) with the Chrome UAstring switcher (which you link to as well) to "Windows Firefox 10" and its been working fine for months. When switching the UAstring to either Firefox or Safari, I've had some issues with pages (mainly Google+) not working 100%, but that's no big deal to me.
You can also just load up Safari/Firefox if you want (never had any redirects there), but I prefer to use Chrome + UAstring switcher, as I'm too much of a Chromepuff to switch. The most interesting thing about all of this is they only seem to be blocking Chrome's Desktop UAstring... and not the others.
As far as from a philosophical standpoint, I completely disagree with T-Mobile's practices.
But honestly if they're going to "block" tethering, I'd take this method over nasty tracking software on handsets or full-out blocking of specific sites (things I'd straight up leave T-Mo over). I'm a big advocate of the "it's your (capped) data, use it however you want" argument. I don't really see what the issue is if I'm paying for data and peg the 5GB cap every month streaming Netflix, whether it's on a phone (which btw can be MHL'd to a 60" plasma) or on a PC. Data is data is data. It's just a blatant money grab that T-Mobile is following in line behind Verizon, AT&T and Sprint who make amazing profit margins using these (and harsher) practices.

Finally got caught by t mobile...

So I had been tethering my ps3 on CM10 and Slim bean and didn't have any problems... I was playing yesterday morning and then left the house for like 30 minutes... when I got back, it would not connect anymore and would bring me to the buy tethering... idk what caused it to be detected... maybe they implemented a way to block it even on AOSP ROMs.... so here's the thing... VPNs work by establishing a secure connection... well why is it that I still get the dreaded buy tethering page... ? Are they unencrypting my VPN? What are some alternatives to get around this? I'm no noob to android... I don't see why I have to pay another fifteen bucks on Internet I already paid for... sadly tethering days on cm10 are over for me... is there any ROM you guys are on that still allow you to tether?

Liquid smooth with foxfi and foxfi key. Key cost $7 on market. You can find it for free if you look for it. You get unlimited tethering. Works for me so far.

reminds me of the "work around" when people would be throttled for using too much data....... hey i only pay for 200mb but i have downloaded 6 gigs and they caught me ...... more and more i feel like this.

There's a mod you can do to your framework files to bypass the tethering warning, and speed cap too! (Not sure if it's entirely legal, but no staff on XDA has taken it down yet..) It's on the T-Mobile Galaxy S III forums in Android Dev posted by Jovy23.

You guys are funny with the tos talk, if u cant offer unlimited than dont offer it. Devices are able to utilize internet by manufactuer feature...data is data especially if your trying to offer unlimited.....sneaking tos with intials boxes and when you try to read the tos it would require a contract expert that bargined for a clearer fairer contract....member the game lemmings?

If *you* read the contract they have every right to provide the tethering service to you for violating the terms of the agreement (which the unlimited Internet plan does NOT include).
Before you try to sound like you know what you are talking about, please do some research.

Last I checked, using a mobile/cellular network to play online with a ps3 is misuse or abnormal.
The terms are clearly laid out when you sign up. If you are that ignorant to really think unlimited means you can take absolutely unlimited data then I don't think you guys should be legally signing contracts due to lack of mental capacity.

im running the latest PAC-man rom. instead of using hotspot shield vpn, im using vpn1click n on the tethering app, i downloaded the one the one on dis link: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390208427046731813 .. now on the settings on the app, the only way i got it to work was putting on device-profile to "google nexus s 4g" hope it works for yall!

And people like this are part of the reason why it's almost impossible to find unlimited data plans anymore

Funny thing about using wifi tether to game is that watching netflix thru phone app will use 8 times more data in the same hour of usage......Ive used 50 gigs with just phone no tether, gigs is gigs. If the contract was fair and just i bet it wouldnt be hard to fit it on one page and in language understandable to their customer base....

Your thoughts are the exact reason verizon and att charge so much for so little data. Internet data is gouged worse than gas.
Unlimited is not giving an inch, that would be the 200mb carriers overcharge for.
