revert to 4.1.2 via NAND backup? (Bootloader) - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I seriously consider to flash a 4.3 ROM (most likely Hurricane) even though I'm still happy with my 4.1.2 - however finally curiousness wins...
I have a simple question, just want a "yes or no". If the answer is no I will not ask for any further advice - will find it by myself.
Q: In case I do not want to stay with 4.3 can I simply go back to my previous 4.1.2 by just recovering a backup (NAND)?
My question is primarily related to the Bootloader since I'm wondering if a recover would restore previous BL as well. I don't want to go for the wifi-fix, therefore I will flash MJ5 BL prior to flashing 4.3 ROM.
Many thanks in advance!

I did something similar before and it didnĀ“t go well
I installed amnix rom because of the walkman player, but in the process that rom changed my modem so I was on G1 from thunderlite v7 and changed to L4.
there were some issues with the rom (mainly on walkman graphic glitches) and decided to go back to thunderlite v7 using a nandroid backup....
the thing is everything "seemed fine" but the modem was not restored ...
also my proximity sensor stopped working,
after a couple of days trying to fix it. I decided to install an old ROM from my carrier (telcel mexico) and lose the IMEI which I got back using an EFS back up I have (the first one I created)
then I updated again to 4.3 on hurricane everything seems to be working ok with the EFS folder and the sensor.,,
so I dont think your bootloader will get restored either.
be cautious.

I was asking myself the same question. I had a 4.1.2 backup of ARHD v19, and then i flashed the 4.3 ARHD v20.1, along with the MJ5 bootloader.
I was dissatisfied with the performance of 4.3, so i decided to revert through recovery. I made a 4.3 backup just in case i brick the phone.
Then i restored the 4.1.2 and everything went well, the 1st boot was about 10 seconds longer.
Now i am not sure did it restore the old bootloader or not, but the device is running pretty fast now on 4.1.2
So yes, it's possible

A nand backup does not contain the bootloader.
But to be sure you can install "android system info" from play store.
Then check buildinfos and the post boot loader version.

Why dont you go in download and see if the bootloader has the knox bit or not.

+1 would be interesting to know. If Knox is there it would mean that 4.1.2 runs on mj5 bootloader...

[Fix] 4.3 ROMs stuck on splash screen after first reboot

For those of you who keep getting stuck on the splash screen after trying to restart your phone after installing a 4.3 ROM.
My steps were (and I take no credit for this, I can't remember who had said to do this and I wasn't logged in so I couldn't click the thank you button):
*Note* If you were already on the Stock 4.3 ROM you do not want to flash the 4.0.4, 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 Stock ROM since you will brick your phone. The Stock ROM contains the Bootloader which should never be downgraded. Fyi: the Bootloader is not the Baseband, the Baseband is just what Modem you're using.
1. Use Odin to flash the latest stock ROM
2. Enter the stock recovery and do a factory reset and clear the cache (I did both twice just to make sure)
3. Use Odin to flash the stock rooted ROM.
4. Enter the stock recovery and do a factory reset and clear the cache. (This might not be necessary but I did anyways just to make sure)
5. Use Odin to flash a custom recovery (TWRP 2.6.0.0 was the newest recovery when I did this last week)
6. Enter the custom recovery and wipe everything, then flash whatever 4.3 based ROM and then flash GApps if you want.
*Note* It seemed like the phone was hanging on the splash screen after either the initial boot or the first restart (I can't remember which, it's been a week) but it did boot and reboot fine.
I hope this helps out some people since I found it to be quite irritating that I could install a 4.3 ROM and set everything up but when I went to restart it would hang at the splash screen (going into the recovery and clearing the cache/dalvik cache wasn't helping).
Are you basically saying to revert back to stock settings and redo the entire root process again?

Yeah, from what I had read that seemed to be necessary since I had used Odin to update the bootloader (MF1 since my phone is the M variant) by itself when the newest Stock ROM had come out a while ago. I still flashed the newest Stock ROM (same MF1 bootloader for the M variant) but the first time I did it I forgot to enter the Stock Recovery to do a Factory Reset and Clear the Cache and ended up stuck on the splash screen of a 4.3 ROM after flashing a custom recovery. So I needed to reflash back to stock and start over.
Going into the Stock Recovery and doing a Factory Reset and Clearing Cache is necessary and doesn't take much time at all so you may as well do it just to be sure. I also recommend backing up your IMEI if you haven't done it yet.

This seems to have done the job. Running PAC 4.3 right now. I've rebooted successfully once so far.

Exactly what I ended up doing after nothing else was working. After getting it hanging the first time, even flashing 4.2 roms was giving me boot issues. After reverting back to stock and reflashing I'm now running the 9/1 Pac nightly and the 8/31 kt747 kernel.
I'm probably 10+ reboots in without issue and I flashed the kernel separately!

I'm glad to hear that this seems to be the proper fix. That's odd that you were having trouble with 4.2 ROMs, but then again I'd been running 4.2 ROMs on my phone since they first started rolling out. It's kind of annoying that everyone's S3 seems to be slightly different then the next.
Yeah this was a weird one all right. Just glad this post had a solution

glad i found this otherwise my first noob post would have truly been a noob move. Thanks wouldn't have guessed that fix for a few days at least.
verified it works. but it did require some weird time dealing with a bootloop issue on stock recoveries. had to find a .tar version of CWM to flash via odin for the final result.
Still Stuck at Splash Screen after trying to upgrade to 4.3
Background:
I had been running task's rom since 4.1.x. Upgraded to 4.2 with not problems and I kept the rom current. Tried to upgrade to 4.3 and that is where the problems started. It appeared to work, saw that Google was updating a number of apps but then then I kept getting error messages regarding various about various processes stopping unexpectedly. Rebooted the phone and it came up with Task's kernel splash screen where it remains frozen.
I can get into TWRP (v2.3.3.1) recovery and into Download mode.
I have tried wiping Cache and Dalvik Cache
I have wiped System
I have done a Factory Reset
I have Formatted Data
I have used Odin twice to get back to stock (I747UCDLK3) and both times it says "passed."
When I try to reboot it, however, it comes back to Task's Kernel splash screen (I do not see the Samsung screen)
Any help or suggestions would be great.
UPDATED: Found an older update from April and was able to restore it. Still wondering why 4.3 wouldn't take.
This Works
I was skeptical, but this actually works! Now running Task's 4.3 on my bell i747m without any problems!
Thanks for the tip OP :good:

If this works you're a life saver! I've been posting around 4.3 threads about this for weeks and no one came up with a decent answer....
Tried reflashing stock with root but didn't work... i'll try your way, see if that works
Gonna try this tonight!!!
Thanks!
I posted in the CM thread about this, but thought I would pass it along.. I didn't have to go back to stock non-rooted. What I did:
I odin'd Mr. Robinson's LK3 rooted
Factory reset from the 3e recovery
Rebooted
Odin'd twrp
Restored nandroid of CM
Good to go.
Solved
Thanks, also works for i727 skyrocket

If you were already on the Stock 4.3 ROM you do not want to flash the 4.0.4, 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 Stock ROM since you will brick your phone.
I'll add a note to the OP about not attempting to downgrade to an older Stock ROM though.

When I had done this back in August, I flashed the Rogers 4.1.2 Stock ROM since that was the latest stock firmware at the time and I have a Canadian S3.
If you had already flashed or been on the Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM, I'd recommend reflashing the latest Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM and following the instructions in the OP. Just make sure that you don't attempt to flash an older version of the Stock ROM that you were already on since you will brick your phone. The Stock ROM contains the bootloader and that cannot be downgraded. I don't have an American S3 since I'm Canadian so I don't know which 4.3 bootloader is the newest although I'm sure a quick search would answer that for you.

There is no latest Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM right now to reflash if you're already on the Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM. We cannot keep telling people this. If so, tell us how, because no one has, as of yet.
I've seen entirely too many posts telling people who are having trouble or phone is soft bricked on the Stock AT&T 4.3 ROM to flash or Odin back to stock. Then when asked how, the discussion ends.
That's also one of the reasons why I refuse to upgrade to 4.3 right now. At least I can still Odin back to stock as an option if something does goes wrong, but who am I to tell anyone to stay away from the latest toy, I mean update?

I'm sorry that I'm unable to help. As I had mentioned I have a Canadian Rogers phone (since I'm in Canada) so I don't know what's going on with the AT&T Stock 4.3 ROMs other then the fact that lots of people are having problems.
If you never flashed or did an OTA update to 4.3 then I'd suggest flashing the Stock 4.1.2 ROM. That or try what Ozark_8125 did since it saves you a couple steps (just make sure that LK3 isn't an older ROM than the one you were on).
If you're unsure what bootloader is currently on your phone and your phone is rooted I'd highly recommend downloading one of the many Root Check apps from the Play Store to verify which bootloader you're currently on.
*Note* I don't know which bootloader is for the 4.1.2 AT&T ROM nor do I know which bootloader came with the 4.3 ROMs. I'm sure a simple search would answer that for you.

[Q] Can I downgrade to 4.1.x stock through odin from TW 4.3

I flashed this TW 4.3 last night
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48048833#post48048833
And I already miss AOSP smoothness/faster feel. What's the easier way for me to get to any AOSP 4.3
Going thru other threads. It seems, If I try odin back to 4.1.x stock, it may not work/i may brick the phone.
Advise plz
P.S: Currently on I747UCUEMJB MODEM as part of this TW 4.3

Did you flash the mjb (4.3) bootloaders? If you did, you will brick by flashing backwards. If not from what I have read it is relatively safe. There is always a risk of bricking even with the simplest of tasks involving flashing.

NO I did not flash the bootloader. I was on Quantum 4.4 for quite some time.
I am planning to travel abroad in couple months. So, to unlock wanted to try TW ROM. hence picked this one (it didnt work though)
This is what I did from 4.4 quantum
Nandroid backup.
flashed the I747UCUEMJB Modem
wiped everything
flashed the ROM
flashed dkp test kernel for TW 4.3
Reboot.
As i took nandroid backup of 4.4 quantum. Now I wiped everything from this TW 4.3 and restored that backup.
So, currently i am on 4.4 quantum (through nand restore)
But phone baseband version says I747UCUEMJB. that's why i am asking the question here.

For a 4.3 ROM, you need to install 4.3 bootloaders. Are there any drawbacks?

I'm considering upgrading to a 4.3 rom from 4.1.2 and I've learned that a stock image of 4.3 must be flashed first (thorugh Odin?) to update the bootloader to 4.3.
Is there any drawback to upgrading? Will I still be able to flash 4.1.2 roms using the 4.3 bootloader? Will I be able to downgrade to the 4.1.2 bootloader (should the need arise)?
Side question: is Odin the only way to update the bootloader? Can it be flashed through TWRP?

You'll have Knox. (Stock) which locks u down cause u can't downgrade and by rooting, you're going for a un-reset-able Knox Warranty Void trigger. Downgrading bootloader is impossible as of now, but flashing ROMs should be possible. (Should, not damn sure)
Side Answer: don't think so. Just flash stock 4.3 through TWRP and u should be good to go.

There is a 4.3 bootloader that would be installed if you ran an OTA update to 4.3 or you manually installed the 4.3 bootloader.
Did you make your backup using Philz? If not, make the backup using Philz, then wipe and install.

You can't restore to a completely stock ROM not that you have a 4.3 bootloader. AT&T never released a full 4.3 stock ROM, only an update to 4.3 from an earlier stock ROM.
If you did not have a 4.3 bootloader, you could install any stock AT&T ROM such as 4.1.1. Being able to restore to stock 4.1.1 would also allow you to sim unlock your phone for free, if necessary.

Your original post said you have an sgh-i747 which is an AT&T model. If you have a Rogers s3, it's an sgh-i747m.
Regardless of which model you have, you can't downgrade from any 4.3 bootloader which means you can't completely revert back to 4.1.1. The best you could do would be to run 4.1.1 on a 4.3 bootloader.

Your original post said you have an sgh-i747 which is an AT&T model. If you have a Rogers s3, it's an sgh-i747m.

sorry i should have included the m lol. i wont worry about going back to 4.1 until the galaxy s5 comes out and im ready to give it to my dad. but back to focusing on this. im about to attempt to flash a 4.4.2 rom. either liquidsmooth or carbon. what do you like?
I prefer Validus version 4.3 because it includes Nova Launcher and it has a dark UI theme.
but thats 4.3. i wanna be on 4.4 and im installing nova and making it the way i had it before.
wait a second is it a 4.4 rom?

It is a 4.4.2-based rom. The release is version 4.3.
hmm interesting...you do recommend it? what great features does it come with?
I like it because it's a very stripped-down ROM, has a dark UI, and is AOSP-based.
It's not radically different from other ROMs but has exactly what I want. I run the same ROM on a Nexus 4 and Motorola Atrix HD.

[Q] Just got stock Note 2 and I WANNA ROOT Without Changing to 4.3 Bootloader

Hey guys, I just joined the club. I have a stock, never been rooted Note 2 and I want all that 4.3 or 4.4 goodness with Air Command
I've read a little bit and it seems that I should never upgrade this OTA because if I did, It would install a new bootloader with KNOX.
Since I still have the 4.1.2 bootloader, any chance I can root without installing 4.3 bootloader so that I can go back to 4.1.2 stock when I want to sell the Note 2 when Note 4 comes in.
Can you guys recommend a 4.3 or 4.4 ROM that won't change my bootloader and will also give me the AirCommand function and apps (I really want Quickmemo). Oh and any ROMs that extend battery life and streamline BloatWiz is very welcome.
my battery is draining more than I like with Bloatwiz
Thanks in advance

Few options.
1) Flash Mrrobinsons stock 4,3 using mobile odin pro and then flash the wifi patch or devil kernel.
2) If you do not have mobile odin pro you can flash the stock Rooted odin image which is packed with 4.1.2 bootloader from here.
3) You can basically flash any 4,4 ROM just make sure it does not come with bootloader (Most custom roms dont include), make sure to read the compatibility notes.

Do any of those come with Air Command? Do they streamline Bloatwiz? and since I will flash with the 4.1.2 bootloader intact, does that mean I can go back to 4.1.2 stock when I'm about to sell my Note 2?

They are stock 4.3 images and they do not come with Air command, you may try DN3 ROM but again read the OP to ensure compatibility with 4.2.1 bootloader. Yes, you can go back to 4.1.2.

From my understanding only Kies, OTA, or Odin/Heimdall (PC version) will touch the bootloader. Flashing in recovery shouldn't mess with it.
4.3 roms on the 4.1.2 bootloader need either a custom kernel such as Devil Kernel or the bootloader patch flashed via PC Odin or Heimdall to allow wifi to work. The patch can be overwritten by odin flashing 4.1.2 roms etc. Once 4.3 had been kies, OTA, or Odined the 4.3 bootloader is set.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

Yeah I'm pretty confused lol. Can someone make sense of this for me. Are all 4.3 ROMs gonna knock out my wifi and require me to reinstall a patch?
Any recommendations on 4.3 or 4.4 patches that can elongate battery life without killing my 4.1.2 bootloader. I NEED to be able to sell this phone like I never rooted it

No I mean after I've rooted it. I figure whoever I might sell it would know how to access the bootloader and see that its got KNOX and has already gotten the counter
Need a little help if you don't mind every time I restore any of my roms I backed up I lose service and phone can't find Sim card. Any idea what to do about this?

Er.... you might want to place this as a separate question in the Help & Troubleshooting forum, instead of asking it inside of this question. More people will see it as your own question with a pertinent title, than inside this poster's question. Just a thought.... :good:
