[Q] CM11 Wifi Direct cannot find device - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

I'm using a n5110 with CM11 nightly 20140127 and a HI763 WIFI Display Dongle Adapter. CM11 cannot find the device on "Wi-Fi Direct" or "Display -> Cast Screen". I don't have another WiDi device, so I'm not sure if it's my tablet or the display adapter problem.
Has anyone tested Wi-Fi Direct mirroring on Note 8 CM11 and has it working?

Probably bad WIFI Cast device. I had gone through 2 different models from china.
One would not connect to any wifi band G or N using open or secure network. The other would connect but would not connect to miracast, would say hardware error.
I found a good one simple and has the latest firmware. And no Lollipop sign in for DLNA. )
The only troubles are that in DLNA bridge mode, it limits you to 65mbps on the bridge mode. I think that is because I am on 5ghz N band. So I don't see any point to using DLNA if your going to use WIFI streaming with G band connections. I would try 2.4 bonded N but, don't like having our neighbors complain.
The only issues I have noted with these devices is they do not like hidden SID networks, and you may have issues with older N wireless routers. I had to mess with advanced settings to get smooth data streams from having the router 1 meter from the miracast dongle.
Since you pushed a developer rom, mostlikely you will need to remove screen mirroring within Titanium Backup, and push your factory backup of Samsung screen mirroring app. I had to do that when I was using a different developers ROM on 4.2.2.
Soon Samsung will release 4.4.3 to Note 8.0 and 10.1 when 2014 edition gets its update. That is why I went back to OEM ROM and realized that there is no significant gains using a developer's rom, unless you are willing to be their guinea pig. Done with it, and will not do it again... way too many troubles for little gain if any.

[Q] wifi help

My note wont connect to my wifi at home. It connects to work and my hotspot just fine. Also every other device including my nexus 7 connect just fine. What could be causing this?
Try a different access point manufacturer. My fried also has a Note 8 and he had the same issue. His router access point was from TimeWarner. He added a Linksys accesspoint and worked just fine.

Do a little more troubleshooting. If it connects to every network except yours, we can confidently say it's your router. Does it even show up on the list of available networks? Be more specific. What kind of router do you have? is it dual band?

I have the 105mbps internet through Comcast so we have their brand gateway (modem/router combined). Basically what happens is the tablet will connect to the network but has no internet access. It shows everything is OK but as soon as you try to load any website it says webpage not available, the play store won't load, etc. But its weird. All devices listed in my signature connect just fine, and so does my smart TV, ps3, and blue ray player, there is literally nothing else that won't connect.
And yes I've tried the basics of booting everything off the network, changing channels on the modem, changing encryption settings and factory resetting the gateway.

The issue of my Galaxy Note 8.0 (3G vesion) is WiFI unstable connectivity.
All of my devices (3 other tablets and 3 other notebooks ) work well with the access point.
but Note 8.0 is just unstable, taking a lot of time to load data for youtube media app, and webpage .
I had tried a different access point manufacturer, but the issue remains.
I had upload some YouTube video ( but voice is using Chinese/Mandarin lagauage)
youtu.be/xg7irxKNl9Y
youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=r3h4HU6HWmw
I've had the same issue with the same Comcast router. Every other device works except for the Note 8.
Just bought a note 8.. also have comcast modem router with phone combo.. same issue. Connects fine but internet wont work. Huge bummer which I think is going to make me return it and get an ipad mini instead.

Why would you gimp your self in to a less capable tablet because your ISP's god-awful router doesn't meet the standard? Seriously, you would be doing your self a HUGE favor by going and getting a real router and dropping that crappy gateway/access point off your monthly bill (you are likely renting that POS from comcast.)

Exactly, especially with APs being so cheap these days.

I'm having the same problem with my brand new Netgear router. I have a feeling this problem is similar to the issue the Note 2 wifi has. Unfortunately, on the Note 2 there's a code you can enter on the phone interface that allows you to turn of it's wifi power saver mode (that's what causes the problem on the Note 2). With no phone interface, I'm not sure how to get to that setting on the Note 8. Changing it on my Note 2 made a TON of difference though. On the Note 2 the code is *#0011# in the dialer. Anyone got any ideas?
Same problem here with one of my routers. It works for a second or two then disconnects. The only way to get the Note working was to disable wifi G and N modes on the router, and only use B mode.

I can use apps like netflix, but i have to be in a valid country to use it. Using vpn will break the connection. For mirroring only possible
If you are rooted. Mine is not (tab pro 8.4 ). In the following link read something about it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/hardware-hacking/chromecast/experimental-enable-mirroring-device-t2812193
I also have a nexus 4 wich works fine mirroring, but vpn breaks the connection again.
A other work arround would be a dwrt router where you change the dns server. Or you could use a pc as hotspot router where all clients
connect to. Maybe its better to use the dongle from samsung or a smart tv easier setup and works for me.

Actually instead of VPN I am using Unblock-us in a Linksys router which works fine with Roku and Apple tv or any other device conected to it, but not with Chromecast since they force the use of their own DNS. This is why I was looking at mirroring as an option , but I agree with you that a dongle might be the best option to avoid any lagging or interruptions.
Thanks

I ended up buying a Dongle on Amazon, which is much cheaper than the Samsung, and I dont have to worry about the compatibility with Chromecast. I suppose Sasmung will make Cast Mirroring available to all devices sometime soon

Unable to detect wifi network...!!!

I am using D-Link 2750U ADSL router, the issue I am facing is quite weird. My Phone, Laptop, Nexus 7 Tab can see Wi-Fi Network in range but Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (10.1) cannot see Wi-Fi network. I tried connecting it manually by providing SSID, it says Network not in range. Interestingly, Samsung tab connects to Wi-Fi network in my office without any issues. So I am clueless as to where the problem is – is it with Router or Tab? Can someone help please

crash your router, try again
access your router, check your settings, history
try unsecuring your wifi, seemif it picks up, then resecure
tab does 80211 abgn, check you're setmfor wpa2-passkey
in your tab if always scan is enabled, toggle it
check system/etc/wifi/nvram* - if present
it's most likely the router and the tab.
Issue resolved (hopefully) by setting channel to fixed number rather than using auto option in router wifi settings.
Interesting aspect is my phone, which is also samsung (s4) and laptop had no issues.
@heeemz
channel!, Uhhh, weird,
My best guess is that you have a router with Full open channels like for Europe or Japan and that the TAB3 is an American version. So as American Wifi is not allowed to transmit on EU/Japan extended frequencies?

[Q] GT-N5110 drops WiFI connection after 4.4.2 upgrade

My Samsung GT-N5110 was rooted and running just fine on 4.1.2. I accepted the 4.4.2 update from Samsung which resulted in the tablet becoming unrooted. i was able to re-root using the ODIN 3.09 and CF-Autoroot. I am not experiencing seriously bad WiFi connectivity. The device will connect and stay connected for 10-15 minutes. Then it will drop the connection and re-establish. I have checked all the obvious places... Oddly, the WiFI > Advanced Settings does not even show "Wifi Optimization" which many threads suggest I disable. I do not even see that option. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Hi,
I can't find anything relevant on XDA for your devices issue. So I will have your thread moved to your device section.
Good luck!

OK, delete the Davlik Cache and remove your internet connection and reboot.
After rebooting attach to your wireless to connect cleanly.
I setup my wireless router for new devices, as my router is 6 years old and does not work well with power saving features in sending packets. Set DTIM to 5 and Beacon Interval to 90.
You can also adjust Fragmentation Threshold to 2306 and RTS to 2307
The last two are tweaks for faster downloading.

Thanks for the tips. My router is a high end D-Link Dual Band router. But here is the real kicker... the device was working flawlessly before the Samsung update to 4.4.2. I ended up installing the custom ROM by CivZ for Android 4.1.2 and the machine is back to working as it should without any drops. I would like to think Google does not break Android with updates... but we all know updates to any software poses the risk of introducing issues. Anyway, thanks so much for responding. I truly appreciate this community.
For yours and everyone else's information, Samsung note 8.0 uses Broadcom wireless interfaces. They are notorious to have connect issues by their archecture. I have had issues with N channel Broadcom devices with my router as other are few routers that connect well with them without any configuration.
Note... My laptop has a old broadcom adapter that will connect three different ways depending on the drivers I use. Windows drivers will allow a connection that will slowly go from 132mbps down to 48mbps and fail to wake. A custom inf with Acer drivers will connect at 82mbps and stay. While the general broadcom driver will connect at 56kbps.
The tablet never connected higher than 72mbps with my settings, but that was to connect my HP printer which is even worse to connect to older routers. I'll never buy HP again. They have cheapend their jet direct home enabled printers to be so unfriendly with existing components. Plus they have a security flaw that will disable the printer when port sniffed on closed ports, let alone open ports that HP will not disclose upon.
I would think a different driver was used in the new kernel, thus your issues with connectivity.
If I were to pick again for a tablet, I'd look for one with Qualcomm, as they are more likely to not have connect issues. D-link is not that compatible, as there have been many instances with peeps not obtaining 300mbps with N channel broadcom interfaces.
You may check with the forums on compatibility issues.

Thanks. That is extremely useful info. If this were a computer running Windows or Linux I could easily swap the wireless adapter with one made by a different vendor, load the drivers for the new adapter and be good to go. Maybe it is just as easy on a tablet... but I have never done that. Is it possible for the end user to manipulate the hardware inside a tablet? Could I swap the wireless adapters? Could I even find them for sale?

tried hotspot, not working. if i am connecting mobile and tv in same wifi then it is working.
Use someone else's phone to create a hotspot and try to connect to that device.
As I mentioned already I can connect from other wifi router or hotspot. But I want connect from my own mobile. is there any way to do?

Miracast doesnot need wifi network to cast. Theres direct connection b/w device & tv.
Its DLNA which works via wifi network.
So you should be able to screen cast directly to TV via miracast or wireless display feature.
In MIUI, its in Wireless & Networks->More->Wireless Display
1. Have miracast/widi enabled in TV settings
2. Switch on Wireless Display setting in RNP5, your TV will appear on screen
2. Select it & accept connection request in devices, RNP5 & TV
3. Wait for direct connection between TV & RNP5
4. RNP5 screen is mirrored on TV
(Tested in LG LA6200 Smart TV, works this way without any 3rd device or wifi router)

I havent tried custom roms on this device.
But this is generic feature & must be present in LineageOS/AOSP based roms. Please check in your rom's display settings.
I have used it on RR in redmi1s (hardware limited), LinOS in Motog2 etc
Some device manufacturers disable this option, due hardware limitations. But custom roms will have it.
Its available with name Cast, in Display settings (generally last option) or QS tile (check hidden tiles)
1. Settings->Display->Cast (in QS cast->go to more settings)
2. Cast Settings (3 dots)->Enable wireless display
3. Wait for TV to be listed
4. Click & accept connection
5. Voila, its done....
I did exactly same procedure. But it not detected unless i have connected in third party wireless network.
I always use this feature with my LG tv (same way as above), have tried it with Redmi1s (custom rom, display->cast), Motog2 (custom rom, display->cast), and redmi note 5 pro (MIUI, wireless & networks-> more->wireless display). Always worked well.
Just a note, it may take time & multiple attempts before listing & proper connection, & distance between TV & mobile shoule be less, else issues crop in.
That listing of TV via 3rd party wifi network, it may be working under DLNA & not miracast.
P.S. In RNP5 pro, as i checked it, even with miracast based cast, when you switch it on, it will first switch on your wifi before making connection. But it need not connect to any wifi network.
May be its like, cast feature in current version is open to both, DLNA & Miracast, thats why it switches on wifi to check whatever method it finds to connect to TV. & by default it goes to DLNA. In old Redmi 1s, cast feature doesnt enable wifi to make connection unlike current RNP5 pro.
So try switching off wifi device & attempt connection. As wifi access point may be saved & gets auto connected, when cast feature attempts to switch on wifi. Be near to TV while attempting miracast mirroring.
Thanks I have switched to Havoc OS based on 8.1. Screen cast works fine here. May be this feature absent in pie based ROMs.
