Hooking GNex up to TV via Xbox

I have a GNex running 4.1, stock. We've recently (finally) bought an HD LED TV, however not one with internet connectivity. I shall add that my brother has an XBox 360 (should prove useful).
I want to be able to stream content from my phone onto the TV. Ideally I would like the phone with me and not connected physically to the TV (hence not keen on the MHL adapter). I'm hoping for something more elegant making use of the XBox. How can I do this?
Also we do not have a router at home (currently it's me and my bro at home and we both use USB dongles for out net on our laptops, each with a data cap). Can I set up some sort of ad-hoc network at home? Will this use up my internet data?
An elaborate answer / links to an elaborate answer would really be appreciated.

But if I set up an adhoc network from my laptop (which I'm assuming will work for my purpose), and I stream from phone to XBox, will I be using the internet? I.E. Am I streaming through the internet or is a sort of local connection created?

Not working with Chromecast

I finally got my Chromecast the other day, and I tried to set it up with my new HTC One. After entering in the wifi password, the screen would eventually read, Chromecast connected to wifi but could not connect to the internet. I am at a University, so I thought that this was the problem, since my school doesn't allow wireless printers. But two of my friends got theirs working on the school wifi by using our school's website to register their Chromecasts MAC address.
I then tried setting up the Chromecast with my Nexus 10, and it worked! The problem is that my HTC One can't find my Chromecast on the network. I feel like the problem has to be with my phone. Any ideas?

My Chromecast works flawlessly with my One. Are you sure both the dongle and your phone are on the same network? Can you cast to it from PC via chrome browser?

VPN Client on the Fire TV

Hi,
I'm in France and trying to set up a VPN client on the Fire TV.
The only decent I've found on the store is VPNroot which won't connect and display a "socket address family" error.
I'm using Boxpn service which works great on my desktop/mobiles.
Anyone succeeded in setting a VPN client on the ftv ?

Not yet. I have tried HMA and vyprVPN the apps crash when connecting to a server. You could do what I did and install DD-WRT on your router, granted your router is compatible. It works great for me and a have everything behind that router protected by the VPN

Yes i'm working on the router side too, but still thinks it'd be great to have the client running on the FTV itself.

Yeah, it would be cool to take it anywhere with you and just fire up the VPN app and get all the content without having to worry about carrying a router with you. ill keep looking into it. will update if find anything

I'm afraid, Fire TV OS is not particularly receptive to VPN usage however, if your router supports DD-WRT firmware, it's a good news because DD-WRT has the option of selecting different VPN configurations like: PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN and Once configured, users on the network don’t need to enter a log in process when they need to activate the VPN. It just starts automatically, so any device connects automatically and easily, giving you all the benefits of using a reliable VPN service.

^^ Macuser just mentioned the tun.ko vpn module got it working. Theres a tun.ko installer by droidvpn in the playstore that some of u guys may want to mess with.

i found an old router with dd-wrt on it, i now have to networks: one local and one connected via vpn which has the AFTV on it.

Care to share how you configured the two networks? I'm thinking about doing the same thing, but can't find a reliable guide to do so.
I have two routers - both configured with dd-wrt. I find that when I plug my second router (w/vpn) into the first's LAN port, I can never get a connection to pass through. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

actually, i have one router for my "usefull" network wich is configured as a gateway (you can use your internet box too). The other is configured as a vpn connected client, connected on the first, making a network for devices that need to be connected to the USA. I use purevpn and they have good tutorials for tomato or ddwrt and other kind of routers.
I also have a NAS with two ethernet ports... each connected on a different network, so it can be available from the fire tv and my computer

Thanks for clarifying. I think I got it working on my end by configuring the 2nd router to use the first router's IP address as the gateway and local DNS server. Still not my preferred option (waiting for the PIA android app to function by itself), but it will work for now. Cheers.

wouldnt it be better to just load up DDWRT on a router and configure your vpn from there?

The best option avalaible is proxydroid.
Droidvpn is too slow.
Knowing this, if you still prefer using a vpn just let me know.

There is a thread on reddit that explains both using the OpenVPN client directly on FireTV or split-routing setup.

I'm sure you can adapt the instructions to suit dd-wrt. And if you can't, maybe you should switch over to OpenWRT.

I was able to get a split tunnel up and running on an ASUS RT-N66U router running Merlin Firmware. The VPN in Merlin is basically a port of OpenVPN in the tomato firmware implementation. The first step is to create the VPN tunnel and then you can setup the separate routes. For Private Internet Access (PIA). I used the following instructions to setup the tunnel:

Next I followed the instructions on this page for setting up a separate route for my FireTv. With this configuration my AFTV goes through the VPN tunnel and everything else goes through the normal Wan to my ISP. I followed the following instruction. Look at page 2 of the post for the instructions by WIZIN

This is tailored for ASUS routers, but the idea should not be too difficult to implement on and dd-wrt o tomato firmware.
For me this is a much cleaner solution than running something on the AFTV. It starts up and shuts down with the router, so I don' have worry about restarting it when I reboot on the AFTV or it using CPU and memory on the AFTV.

I have a fire tv and would like to have a backup to connect to the office. I have a Asus N900 which has asuswrt fimrware. How do I setup the client to connect I am getting bad config on mine when trying to connect. IPCP -timeout sending config-requests.

[Q] Fire TV Wirless/Hotspot

Hi, I currently have my FTV connected to my router using a wired connection. I tried to make a wireless hotspot using FTV by using the Wifi Tether Router app. It works fine. I can see the access point and I can connect my laptop and my IPhone to it and surf the internet without any issues.
The problem starts when I connect FTV to my router using the build in wireless card. At this point, if I enable the router (through the app), it disconnects my outgoing wireless connection from FTV to my outside router. The hotspot is ON and working, I can connect to it fine with my laptop, but of course, its useless as there is no outside connection.
My question is, is this possible? Using the internal wireless infrastructure in FTV to both act as a software router (through the app or any other app) and also use it for my outgoing connection to the WAN. Can it do both simultaneously? If possible, does anyone have any suggested settings for this app (Wifi Tether Router)
If no one has any experience with this app, is there other app that makes this possible, paid or free? Thanks.

You only have one radio which can either be used as a client or access point.. But not both at the same time.
This works on phones as it uses the GSM or CDMA radio for the wan and the WiFi for lan.

Ok, thanks. If it helps, I have a USB hub connected to FTV. My wireless keyboard and mouse combo is hooked to that and works. I have a Wireless USB adapter from CompUSA (the kind you plug into a desktop to get wireless capability) which I can use by attaching to the USB hub. Can that somehow be used to accomplish this? I know I can always buy a Wifi as WAN router like CradlePoint, but curious if this can be done through FTV.
Edit: In a way, the next logical question is, can an external USB wireless adapter be used with FTV for its outgoing WAN? If so, how? I have the StickMount loaded and I can browse through another storage USB through ES File Manager. Probably not related, but thats the setup I have now.

This is what I'd try. I'd look to see if other Android STBs can run an external wireless card and if so, try to find the cheapest one with the same wifi chipset.
The problem is going to be in telling the OS to use one adapter for uplink and one for hotspot duty. In theory it's possible, in practice - well, keep the cost of the second dongle below 30 bucks and tell us your findings.

Just that in your initial post, you describe running ethernet to your fire and also getting the wifi to work as a hotspot.
Since you'll still be delivering network to the fire ethernet port, this setup will look to the fire as if you've run ethernet to it all the way from your router, and it ought to work just the same.

Not doubting this on FTV, but the matricom mx2 boxes can be used as a wireless hotspot as long as you have it on ethernet.
Once you have an unlocked bootloader, you might have acess to traditional android settings like the mx2 with a custom rom. Just an idea...

That is correct. Works beautifully with ethernet WAN. Works so well that it seems to have a higher broadcast power than my oldish Netgear router. They both sit side by side in my bedroom. As soon as I walk to my garage, my IPhone loses the router, but with FTV it stays connected, with 2 semi circle bars. Also, it chugs along even when FTV goes into sleep mode.

How to get VPN fire tv. No messing & Cheap. (UK)

Hi Guys,
Basically, you don't even need root for this.
You need to get a DIR-615 router. (I got mine for £10 delivered). I've gone for the D4 revision but I believe most work. Unless of course your router supports DDWRT.
I'd suggest getting this as an additional router. I've got a BT Homehub 5, and the lan cable from that connects into the DIR-615 internet port. So effectively two networks, one for DNS the other for anything else.
Next, install DD-WRT. Change the default IP to 192.168.5.(whatever). Just make sure where 5 is, it's not 1 as it will conflict and not give you internet access.
Next, get a smart dns provider. (DDWRT also supports VPN) - smartdns is an easier way. Put the IP addresses in the DNS fields.
All set up, running NBC Live sports from home on the TV.
Not to mention, with the video add ons - none will be blocked from UK. etc.

So if I understand you correctly your set up is this:
Your Master Socket is connected to your BT HomeHub 5.
You then connect your BT HomeHub 5 to the DIR-615 via Ethernet?
You install DD-WRT, set up the VPN settings etc, and then connect your Fire TV to the DIR 615 rather than the HomeHub?
I currently have a Openreach Modem which connects to the master socket. I then have a ASUS RT-N66U connected to the Openreach modem via Ethernet. Am I right in assuming if I buy and connect a DIR - 615 to the Asus via an ethernet port and then do the above I can achieve the same thing? I
I'm looking to buy a fire TV so I can watch NBC Sports Live Extra on my TV. I only want a VPN connection on my FireTV only when I'm watching NBC not my other devices etc hence why I second router would actually work perfectly for me.

If all you want to do is bypass geographic restrictions so you can watch NBC sports then all you need is a smart dns provider, a popular one is Unotelly but there are loads out there...
I have set up using the below instructions (which are wireless) so when wanting to watch the Premiership on NBC I just unplug my Ethernet cable and connect to my router wirelessly which then has all the correct settings

Exactly . Very easy to set up! SmartDNS is set up for me, not a VPN. NBC works brilliantly.
Although, NBC has been hacked on XBMC - login not even needed (SmartDNS is still needed). But for the App, it will work great too.
My next port of call is getting a wireless harddrive, or something that takes USB/SD Cards, and wireless devices can pick this up - Essentially so I can download episodes etc from XBMC/PC to it and watch on Fire TV.

Can't be done with BT home hub 5 though can it? DNS is blocked I believe.
