[Q] Alternate handwriting input keyboard for custom ROMs? - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

I just flashed Omni 4.4 and am generally loving it but soon came across an issue I didn't even think about. I usually will jot short things down through the Samsung keyboard's handwriting recognition features. I can't find a replacement for this functionality.
I assume someone else here has had the same thing happen, what did you go with? AFAIK we can't port the Samsung keyboard over without TouchWiz.

Try MyScript Stylus Beta

I agree. Very good alternative with good handwriting recognition. Still needs some touching up to be ideal, but a very good option.

5.1? Where did you find it please? It's not on market and maybe I've missed some twit from cootek. It's my main keyboard for month!
I prefer the standard Gingerbread keyboard. You can download it from the Android Market. Once you use it for a good period of time, you get used to it.

SwiftKey X is excellent! Definitely worth the money. Go and download the one month trial.
ive tried a lot of them but keep going back to the htc mod someone made for it. Still the best one in my opinion

I would be interested in new keyboard .. but I don't want any prediction. I want nice layout portrait and landscape, perfect reaction time. Customizable layout would be sweet, as so far, nothing really fits my needs.
Edit: looks like Smart Keyboard is going to cut it for me ! Lots of customization .. and some neat Czech options ..
Swiftkey X. My typing is TERRIBLE but it has fantastic auto-correction, so now I never have to worry about typos.

+1 for SwiftKey X
and also this is what I like about this keyboard:
- great prediction and auto completion,
- simultaneous use of different languages so don't have to remember to change language like in swype
- It can even predict little town names (at least in UK) and start them with capital letters.
- when you want to come back to previous words, you can still use dictionary, it doesn't treat them as a bunch of single letters but as a word.
It was my best buy from the market.

Well... That's very nice. I'll have to give that keyboard a try.
Edit: Predictions are excellent, I've got to say. Very nice keyboard.
And having two languages at the same time is killer
I'm using Swype. Couldn't stand Swiftkey because it kept predicting the wrong words for me.
That said, I do love the latest Swype with prediction.
Swiftkey
Its by far the best, and gets better the longer you use it.
Smart keyboard pro... most accurate...

The latest beta 3.26 is the best one yet. Get's my vote by far, and I've bought other keyboards. Excellent multi-language support and editable dictionary, gestures, etc. It's getting to be amazing.
nothing beats gingerbread keybard or latest swype is good

[Q] S Pen features when rooted

Hi guys,
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered before. Search brought up no answers for me.
l have a note 10.1 2014 WIFI only. l haven't rooted it yet though I am familiar with rooting from other devices.
Now, I absolutely hate touchwizz and would love to flash a stock android rom onto my tablet, however l am worried that removing touchwizz will disable any s pen features.
Could somebody please confirm if I will be able to use s pen with a custom rom or not? I've looked through a fair few threads and cannot find an answer.
thanks in advance.

Its the wifi only version (exynos chip?) anyhow i've rooted and installed twrp recovery now and backed up.
as for the rom, I'm looking for a complete stock android experience with S Pen features, looking through the rom section here I think I'll be going down the route of a cm11 based rom
Spen is not working with cm11. If you want spen, best bet is stick to TW rom.

I'm running Hyperdrive Rom with Nova launcher and all functionality with the spen is working fine. You might not like touchwiz on the stock Rom but on this Rom it flies.

DISCLAIMER: SPen feature(intrinsic functions)are only to the tip being precisely detected on the screen and the side button detection

This clarified lets answer the question; because this gimmicks\features are on TouchWiz and not on the SPen, if you take Touch-wiz out of the equation you will lose those functions but not necessarily the precise pen and the side button detection(which rely on the drivers been implemented correctly on the ROM and not on touchwiz itself).
Rooting the device doesn't affect which system you are running, only what privilege you have in it; so, Still TouchWiz=Gimmicks exist.
Now, if there are things you don't like about TouchWiz there are many ROMs based on it that try to fix many problems inherent to the system and thus you would still have TouchWiz features. On the other hand, if you want to install something like CyanogenMod, AOPK or OmniRom, you will trade Touchwiz gimmicks for those implemented on the ROM you chose(Different Rom, different gimmicks).
I would tell you to investigate which are the gimmicks you want before jumping ROMs. Read the post of every rom you would like to install before doing so.
Personally I couldn't care less for multiwindow or doubletap note gestures if the system stutters randomly and its dumbed down Samsung-style. Even with the great things guys here have achieved with Touchwiz framework(You are really doing great things guys :highfive i still feel like i am in an eternal battle using and controlling it; trying not to launch something i really didn't intended to, or praying for the system to do what i want when I want it to; it is not worth it for me. Touchwiz makes me feel awe but never lets me feel at home and comfortable with the environment. I prefer to install CM and feel the tablet like a nexus device with a nice Wacom pen than a colorfull collage of Touchwiz features. Again, this is my personal opinion.
IMPORTANT NOTE: SPen functioning(READ DISCLAIMER) is almost ready for the new cm ROMs for the wifi version. At this moment there are various cm bases ROMs with the SPen functioning only on landscape mode so if you use the SPen thoroughly for notes, drawings and stuff I recommend waiting a little bit more before making the jump, if you decided to go that way.
Greetings everyone, if possible I'd like to add one more question to this scenario.
I understand from the above that we lose the features from Touchwizz like the floating menu, however what about the general S-Pen functionality, like the 1024 levels of sensitivity?
In particular, I'd like to know if installing CM11 and Sketchbook and use it as efficiently as in a stock environment.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

It depends. If the ROM you want to install has the drivers and are correctly implemented(As in no Bugs), NO, you wont loose core functionality of the pen; Pen detection on the screen with its sensitivity, pen button detection, pen eraser and hover(and any combinations of those 4) are all driver based so they should all work on a ROM that implemented them.
As long as the not-touchwiz-based rom says that the pen works it means that those core functionality are indeed working, and if they dont, it is a bug.
The other aspect would be an outdated driver but i am sure the devs get what we already had on touchwiz and only port it or something, so i don't think we should worry about it.
Other aspect is that some apps like papyrus give you the option to use the pen's button as tool changer, item selector, and other stuff that could not be used on touchwiz because those gestures were taken by the system to open apps or action memo; so in a way, using CM gives you even better experience for 3rd party apps.
TL; DR If SPen drivers are in place you would have the same quality than on touchwiz for SPen Wacom core functionalities.

Samsung keyboard port

I really like Samsung keyboard. Anyone know if possible to port it or a way of getting it on m9?

ai.type seems pretty close to a samsung keypad
Nah no good. I like the gaps between keys for my fat fingers
Actually it's a pain in the ass to write in 3 different languages with most 3rd party keyboards. Swift/Swype are not usable with a Thai keyboard layout and additional Swiss and English layout. Samsung keyboard was the best and my error rate is 50% higher on any other keyboard even after several months of usage.
I've been looking for a port every time I had to use a non-Samsung device in recent months. There is simply none available.
I think it would be quite easy for someone who ported apps in the past. I guess the TouchWiz dependencies are minimal and could probably be circumvented somehow,.

Porting the Original S6 Keyboard is Not Possible Possible and easy also because Of Touchwiz-Framework Requirement.
But U can get S6 Like Themed Keyboard. (As Apple themed keyboard is Same as S6 )

Note Pro 12.2 Samsung Keyboard

Yes hi, I hope someone can help me with this, but, well, I use my tablet for writing a good amount of the time, but the only keyboard that has everything I need, which honestly is just sad, you'd think more would have it all.
Anyway, the only keyboard that has everything is the Samsung Keyboard that comes default in the SM-P900 firmware.
But I really want to change to CM13 because all this bloatware is seriously draining the battery, and the last time I tried to debloat the tablet myself I basically soft bricked it.
But changing to CM13 gets rid of the Samsung Keyboard. So I was hoping someone could tell me how I can reinstall it? Is there an apk someone's made out there, or is there a way I can make the samsungime file into an apk that actually works? I'm pretty much desperate here, cause every other keyboard I've tried, including Hackers Keyboard just doesn't fit.

if you send me a link to of your rom zip, I will debloat the zip and send it back to you.
as far as my experience, the samsung keyboard is reliant on samsung framework ex won't work on non samsung roms

I'm using the Samsung keyboard with Resurrection Rom with mostly success. The recents key and the screen off/lock toggle doesn't turn off the screen when you put the tablet face down on the keyboard (case mode?)
There may be a way to remap them but I haven't found it yet.

I misread your original post, I thought you were talking about the hardware keyboard case.
Now I have Lineages 14.1 on Note Pro 12 P900.
What can I do to be able to install and use Samsung Keyboard?
