[RUMOR] 4.4.2 KitKat Update - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update to Arrive by the End of March, Says Insider
Galaxy S4 Note 3 Android 4.4
Samsung has already pushed the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to the Galaxy Note 3 users, and, judging by the recently-leaked test builds, the Galaxy S4 KitKat update is around the corner. But how about the Sammy’s 2012 flagships? When will the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 get some KitKat love? According to a Samsung insider, the company will release the Android 4.4.2 update for Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 by the end of March.
In an attempt to find out when the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 will receive the highly-anticipated Android 4.4.2 update, we’ve got in touch with a Samsung software engineer that was able to confirm for us that both devices will be updated to KitKat “in late Q1 2014, soon after the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 roll out.” He also said that the user interface changes will be minor and that the update will not bring any new software features.
Of course, you will be able to taste the KitKat-specific goodies, like transparent status bar, new printing feature in settings, and the new full-screen immerse mode.
The Android 4.4 update for Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 will be rolled out in phases, meaning that it will not be available for everybody right away. For example, the US carriers are known for being at least one-month late to the update parties, so don’t start hitting the Check for updates button yet.

Wonder if it will really happen.

I've seen the "news" of the s3 getting kk, but only international s3. So many variants, I wish they'd be more specific about it. With our ahole carriers having last say, I'm not holding my breath for AT&T to give it. No money in it for them. Especially with the s5 release right around the corner.

There is absolutely no way this is going to happen. AT&T will never give us the latest version of android.

I don't like AT&T any better than most peeps, but they gave us 4.3, why not 4.4?

AT&T gave us 4.3 because Samsung had just released Galaxy Gear, which would require 4.3, and Samsung was pushing carriers to update. There is currently no reason for AT&T to update and no reason for Samsung to urge them to do so. I have no expectations of an AT&T update to 4.4, but if it somehow happens, be prepared to accept that it will be the last update your phone will receive.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

They will not likely give 4.4 because the main reason for 4.3 was too sell galaxy gear. Now that there is no additional incentive for profit from the phone, they will target people to upgrade to a newer model.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Don't think so. kitkat looks to be a completely different thing than 4.3. cm has not released a stable version yet for the d2att. could be a lot more work to get it functional.

I don't think AT&T will throw the S3 anymore updates, I'm not even using the most recent one. Wouldn't download to my phone. Oh well running Quantum v2. Not planning on buying a Galaxy Gear so no biggie. Just my thoughts....

I was talking with AT&T repair regarding my phone freezing when switching from portrait to landscape since the 4.3 OTA and they told me they were not aware of a fix coming out for this, but that 4.4 will probably come out in a couple months and it may replace whatever is causing the problem. When I went to the Samsung Experience center to let them force the OTA onto my phone again to see if that would fix the issue, that tech said the same thing about 4.4 coming out, but he thought my freeze issue is hardware related.

I agree that the only reason 4.3 was relatively fast is because of galaxy gear.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app

It was released very quickly...especially since the U.S. carriers released so quickly on par with the international version. The update was purely profit motivated. This is why the international version ran into so many issues upon initial release. Samsung was so worried about profits from galaxy gear that they never thoroughly tested the update.

do our phones have the tech for smart scroll?

being that we already have SMART STAY feature, do you think they will roll out smart scroll in an update?

Hopefully!
I have a G Note II with rogers in Canada (i317M) and would LOVE this feature.
i did read that the thing preventing it was not hardware but software, so if the sgs 4 runs on the same os as us im sure someone can find a way to port one over
it uses the front camera so yes it does but if samsung doesnt update our phone to include that feature than we will need to wait for a galaxy s4 rom port
Since that is one of the features being touted for IV don't expect that update soon.
Carbon 1.5 | Kroz Hue Brown Theme | Crack Flasher
But as soon as the s4 comes out, don't expect to wait long for it to be included in GNII custom roms

Saw this @ sammobile showing a leaked screen caps of those functions for Galaxy S III ROM, and I'm sure soon will be in Note II's ROM.
"leaked" "galaxy s iv" screen shots http://tmonews.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/samsunggalaxys4.jpg
The screeenshots seen on the inter-webs of this feature has been said to of been taken from a GS3, so this feature is already being tested on current gen devices, so I believe the G Note 2 will definitely be getting this feature, it's just a matter of when.
Yes, even if the GS4 is released, followed by the GS3 update it'll only be a matter of weeks max before it is ported or leaked or just flat out made to work on the GN2 by the powers that be lol.
Samsung has actually been pretty good about updating features on older phones. The GS3 got the smart tilt function the note 2 had. Also, the original note got a bunch of new features with the ICS update that included one hand mods to the keyboard and keypad. They may take a while to get out, but they sure do update features a lot more than other manufactures. I'm guessing that not long after they announce the GS IV they will push updates to the note 2 and GS3 with similar features.
Our phones can do smart scroll. In fact, Samsung worked mainly with the S3 and Note 2 before finalizing the feature on the S4. In a not so distant future, we all will get a firmware update enclosing this welcomed-surprise. However, I will probably keep this feature disabled; "Big Brother Is Watching You." Just Kidding.
I don't see why not.Basically combining the s pen scroll with smart stay.

any update on getting the GS4 air view/smart scroll feature on GN2?

4.2.2 Samsung official? When?

When do you think Samsung will release 4.2.2 for the Note2?
After release of S4?
Or like half year later?

Ofiicial: Samsung Will Update Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 to JellyBean 4.2.2 Shortly After Galaxy S4 Release Date – Report
Well....that would be right now then....take/give a few moments.....
Who cares? I've used 4.2 it's not much of an upgrade over 4.1. The only feature thats interesting is the multi user setup and that's only interesting to a limited user group. My phone is mine. No one else uses it. Period.

Well, if YOU don't care....good for you. Point taken.
Let me just tell you that MANY people care for ANY update, since
not many phones are working as they're supposed to, with 4.1.2.
Myself, I have not had a proper working wifi function, since the
miserable 4.1.2 "update". And you know as well as all of us
that most users have less battery time, more lag, & so on.
But you already know about those facts.
You just wanted to say "who cares"...
Well.....who cares if you care or not?
Unless they release the note 3 they will never release 4.2.2 for note 2 owners because they fear that some people will not upgrade to note 3 due to the upgrade software.
just like we will never get 4.2.2 for the s3 unless the s4 is release
If you truely want 4.2.2. Unlock and root and just use rom. Super easy to do now especially with the latest samsung devices, i.e. Galaxy S3 and Note 2.
And with being able to download the stock images almost impossible to brick these devices.
I'd actually like lockscreen widgets.

You used the 4.2 in Galaxy S4? or you used the CM10 version?
completely different stuff.. i want to use it cause samsung is doing amazing things that you dont see in CM versions
Do you want me to elaborate some things?
Air View (with finger if possible like S4)
Multi-windows
Sensors (next page, moving homescreens etc, I know GMD works as well but this gets integrated in stock)
Both cameras working at same time.

[Q] Galaxy Gear Compatibility?

Obviously the Gear updates in terms of compatibility started rolling out today for the GS3, GS4, Note II, etc.
Just wondering if we put the same android version or software on our GNs, ours could work too yeah? Did a search and didn't see anything related. Sorry if I missed.
We could never "put" Samsung softwares on our phone, I guess. Gear support is deeply integrated within the TouchWiz framework and without some serious work, even other Samsung devices won't be able to utilize it. Samsung proprietary sh!t.
Sent from Samsung Galaxy Nexus @ CM10.2
I believe there have been some other devices that have it working with it in some way or another. I have seen at least an HTC One running 4.1 and a Nexus 4 allegedly getting it to function, at least partially.
There have been threads where people are looking into what it requires. Like this one (which actually has an alleged N4 victory).

Note 4 android L

Anyone heard anything about the note 4 getting the android L update?
This is all hypothetical but should be soon, they have been releasing build videos on their youtube channel with progress on the S4, S5 etc. The Moto X and G3 I think just got the update and I'd imagine Samsung is hot on their tail. Lets hope soon!
I read early 2015
No phone has received Lollipop yet, except the Nexus 6 - previews of it are popping up on different devices (G3, MotoX, S5, etc) - they haven't been released to the public yet - I would expect that they need more time to test the software.

Select 2014 Moto X users who are signed up as soak testers for Motorola have received a test build of Android L. It's not publicly available to all. Like BizzLeonDaCouch said, previews are popping up in places, but as of today, no phone outside of the Nexus 6 officially has a final, public version of it.
I think we should see it Q2 of 2015.

suckrizon is both difficult, and easy to say.
You know we'll get 5.0. You also know Verizon will be among the last, and it'll be everywhere by then.
When i had s4 verizon pushed 4.3 i think quickly due to galaxy gear watch and lolipop seems important update all phone makers are jumping onto updating the phones.
I think it might be much quicker maybe by end of year.

I agree that Verizon's overall track record has been horrible with timely updates, but over the past year, they've released updates to some of the latest flagships much quicker than in the past. For instance, the Verizon S5 was one of the first anywhere to get an update to 4.4.4, even before the unlocked international version.
OS updates are the same as always...a couple of months after then International device gets it depending on carrier. So watch the International Note 4 forum for when they start getting OTA and then you know you only have a few months to wait.

Will we ever see another OS update with our flagship device?

Is Samsung done? Is Lollipop ? the last operating system iteration, we'll every see? Will we ever get the rumored 5.0.3 ( that fixes the massive memory leak many users experience) after 40 hours of on time. They say it feels laggy. But a reboot of the device fixes it.. Well, until the memory leak makes it lag again.
I myself, don't experience such lag. Any of you? Anyway, not to get off topic, is Samsung done with us?
Who knows, the way Samsung rolls out its updates seems a complicated state of affairs, with all the different versions etc they release and the amount of messing they do with the original release.
Whereas HTC release timely updates for devices that are not even flagships Samsung seems to forget it's older devices. However the way HTC release updates is much more sensible. The international and developer gets it first then the carrier versions come out and they are quick with it too.

You're joking, HTC rolled out lollipop for the m8 and m7 ages ago with an update to 5.1 due in August.
I wonder if Samsung, aware of the memory leak on the 5.0.2 iteration, fixed it on their own? I don't experience the lag at all. Does anyone else?
I agree, I have the HTC One M8 on 5.1 GPE for a while and I had to sideload 5.02 for the tab pro S as I had no idea when I was going to be able to get it in the UK. Samsung really need to sort it out as they will lose a lot of sales. Their after sales service in my experience is useless.
I'm thinking that Samsung will be done with us since the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 is coming in June ? ?
This is why I really don't care for yearly revisions to devices.
Another good question is will our version OS the Tab S ever see an Android-M release which is mentioned in today's news about the next Google IO? I'm getting my Tab S today but coming from a Nexus 10 running Lollipop 5.1.1 and will miss the ability to rapidly install the latest OS revisions that I could with a Nexus device.

Going by Samsungs history, I'm going to say no. We didn't see lollipop ? until March. That's almost 7 months after its release. Our Samsung Galaxy Tab S was released in June. The new Tab S is going to be out in June.
Now, the OS Android-M will probably see a September rollout as well. So the Tab S 2 should probably see an update in March again of 2016.
I can't see Samsung updating Android-M for us, is in 2016.

Samsung typically supports devices for 2 years, I don't see how Android M won't be available for us.
I had a Galaxy Tab 8.9 before this one (an S 8.4). Released about 3.5-4 years ago. That one IIRC was released (in some early markets) with 3.1, upgraded fairly quickly to 3.2. And after a good wait to 4.0.4. (roughly around the time the successor came out). After that, there was similar hoping and praying on the xda forum. But no upgrades from Samsung.
Honestly, I don't expect we will see an official 5.1. But I'm willing to bet we'll never see Android M from Samsung.
I don't know the sales figures of the Tab S, but it will probably pale in comparison to the flagship phones, which are the only ones to have reasonable (*) hope for 2 major upgrades.
Just my 2 cents
Edit:
(*) based on past evidence.
it's a pity, really, seeing how the tab S was such a jump forward in specs, compared to the Tab 2, 3, 4. You'd almost hope for a "miracle" after all.
The amazon phone just got upgraded to .... Kit Kat. So it could be a lot worse.
LOL
I had the Tab 7.7 before this. It started its life with 3.2, went through ICS and ended its life under JB 4.1.2.It sold much less than the two Tab S models combined. I believe we should expect at least one more major update, as my (admittedly small) sample of flagship Samsung devices all went through at least two major updates (P6800, I9100 and I9300).
Guys, just that you are clear, samsung (touchwiz) based roms don't face any memory leak problem. Only aosp ones

Very true. The memory leak was an issue with boot animation or some sort with google/aosp roms. Samsung uses qmg and bunch of other things which isn't affected.

Lollipop is still somewhat modern, so I don't mind using it for a while, but I hope some day there will be official Cyanogen nightlies and milestone to get rid of all the Samsung bloat.
