SD issues - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys, I've been baffled by this all day, if you could help me, that'd be nice.
So, I updated to the latest nightly the other day for CM11, (20140120) and when it booted, I couldn't get the SD card to mount.
I've now tried various ROMs, stock, every CM for my phone available, and no matter what, the SD won't mount.
I've tested multiple SD cards, thinking it was just a dead SD, but to no avail. What is weird is that when I plug the SD in to my computer (Via a USB adapter, and an actual card adapter as well on a second try.) it shows up completely normally, with all the files on it and everything. Tried reformatting it in Windows, Linux, and Mac as well.
Do you guys think that my SD slot has just crapped out? Because I can't afford a new phone whatsoever, and I love my baby Hercules.
Any suggestions would be lovely, thanks for your time!

Well since you went back to Touchwiz, and you tried multiple SD cards, I'm going to guess the actual reader went bad. My recommendation would be to go to multiple repair centers and see what they all say. Don't just go to one because they might rip you off and the more opinions the better

Well, everybody says that nothing is wrong with my SD slot, and I've noticed that when I turn my phone's screen on, it tries to read my SD, and it mounts successfully. What's weird is that the second I unlock my phone, it unmounts and asks me to format my SD. I tried formatting it in my phone, and on the computer (Unix, Windows, Linux) as well again. So, I can't really figure out the issue. It isn't just limited to one android version, it's on all. And even on Touchwiz it unmounts when unlocked. I'm quite baffled. ._.
Sorry to necro my own thread, but I need this fixed. lol

corrupted files maybe? Maybe its a software issue. Try going back to stock and maybe try again

Actually, this will sound really stupid, but I was installing Koushik's airplaymirror.apk, and I was doing it through ADB. I used adb root, then adb remount, and before I used adb push, I noticed my SD card mounted right after that command. So yeah, simple solution, but I'm still not sure what the problem was?

SD Card keeps becoming unavailable

Has anyone else come across the problem where the micro SD card seems to just stop being available to the phone? I'd say maybe once or so a day, anything that reads data from the SD card, such as the music app, stop working. If I try and play a song, it just hangs and does nothing.
I tried a search and somebody in the G1 forum had a similar problem but it didn't really contain any conclusions on what it is likely to be.
Anyone else had this issue? What is it most likely to be, the phone or card?
Thanks.
yeah I've had this occasionally with the camerea and seperately the 3d gallery software I installed.. have no idea why
Yea I've had that a couple of times actually. Just have to turn it off and on again and its ok, but its annoying.
Yeah, rebooting does sort it out, but it's starting to happen every day now, sometimes a couple times a day. If it's just a dodgy card or whatever I'd rather get T-Mobile to sort it sooner rather than later.
hmm a dodgy card.. included with the phone, that sucks
Backup your SD Card data and then try formatting it to see if that helps.
Cheers, will give that a go tomorrow. I might ring up T-Mob tomorrow anyway just to make them aware of the issue I'm having.
If I format it, will I be able to copy all the contents back on to it?

Yes, back it up to hard drive on your PC, then after you have formatted your SD card, copy back the contents from the hard drive to your Removable disk (SD card).
I've had this a few times Took the card out, reinserted and restarted the phone. Seemed to fix it, but it is annoying.
Sorry I can't remember when and how I know this.
But backup the card on your PC
Then format it in/with the phone and this should solve the problem I believe
I had killed one of my 16 GB card in Nexus one.
I found a problem that if i use Win 7 or Vista i must remove the device by using safely remove the USB device. Since now am doing this way i never had any problem.
Word of warning you could simply kill a card if you just remove a device.
My first thought was it has something to do with the USB connection. If you safely remove device in Windows - the phone 'prepares' the SD card.
I was having the same issue. I connected to the PC and mounted the SD card. I performed a disk check on the card and it found some errors which it then repaired. I then unmounted the card
I haven't had any issues since.
I formatted my card yesterday and haven't had any problems so far. thanks for the advice.
I ended up replacing the card. All of the previous advice didn't work for me or if it did it didn't last. I reckon there was a bit of a dodgy batch supplied by SanDisk.
~Since replacing I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever, it used to happen at least every 48hours. Very annoying when you try to take a photo and it tells you there's nowhere to save it.
I've been having problems too when taking pictures, which is really annoying!
And i'm not sure whether this is a related problem or not, but it could be...when trying to receive a file over bluetooth it sometimes says it doesn't have permission to receive the file or something along those lines, could this be the SD card playing up?
I'm on T Mobile, would they replace the SD card?
Not sure if it is the same reason, but I had all kinds of problems including the one you've described.
I'm on Orange, they told me that my SD card wasn't covered by Orange Care (the orange phone insurance). I said I didn't have Orange Care anyway and that surely it comes under the 12 months manufacturers warranty. They said pop it into the shop which is a bit of a drive and would cost me more than the value of a new card to get there.
At the time I wasn't certain it was the card as I didn't have a 2nd to try it with. Given my problem was very intermittent I decided the bother of going into the shop - it wasn't worth it for a £5 card. Now that I've bought a new one that works perfectly, I'm going to head into the shop with the old one next time I'm passing. The problem is I don't really need it replacing now! You could always lie and tell them you've tried your friends card at home for a couple of days and it worked perfectly?! No harm in trying.

Mhh - maybe I've had luck, but I use my over 1 year old 8gb cl6 card from magic/mt3g and never use that win function while unpluging anything (not while data transfer). So maybe depends on quality or manufacturer?

[Q]Help: unlocking deleted pictures

Like an idiot I did not remember that with the stupid internal SD card, the unlocking would delete pictures/videos/etc. is there a way to get it back? I am unlocked but not rooted. This is a friends phone and I'd appreciate any help getting his pictures back.
Why can't this freaking thing have an external SD card?
You can't, once it's wiped its wiped
If he had google+ his pictures may be backed up to his account

I hope that decision isn't based on this one experience with the pics being deleted.. Because you know it would have been extremely easy to just transfer them to your computer via USB before unlocking and then transfer them back after.
It is possible I have recovered wiped files off of an sd card before although not the nexus's internal storage. the software recuva is free and should work. The key is that you do not want to write any files over the data that is gone, the more data overwritten the less chance of recovering. You might be able to recover some files off the storage with this program. Although I am not entirely sure how the nexus erases files through the unlocking process
everywhere warns you to backup because it will do a full wipe.
your fault, not the nexus.
Just had a thought...if you have a USB OTG adapter, you can try hooking up a USB drive and then use dd to dump all of /data to the drive. There are many file recovery tools that are able to analyze such dumps.

not just this experience but in general I hate the fact that this phone does not have an SD card. I understand that we are going to cloud computing and the iPhone lovers have had it this way for a while and blah blah blah... I just feel more secure knowing that if I accidently drop my phone in the toilet (done that) or go in the pool while my phone is in the pocket of my swimsuit (done that too, why the hell do they make swimsuit with pockets is beyond me), I could get the SD card out and be able to recover some of my data. I guess we all have our quirks. I just love the little micro SD card.

Great suggestions, hopefully I won't need it in the future. The owner of the phone convinced me that it wasn't worth it. It was just an embarrasing thing. I should have known better.

That won't work. You cannot use dd to dump /data because you need somewhere to write the dump. /sdcard is located on /data, and a USB OTG mounts in /sdcard, so it becomes circular.

I too was turned off at first by lack of ext storage, but now I dont even miss it. The phone seems to run smoother without having the ext card imo, dont have to worry about read/write speeds and compatibility. As far as recovering data from ext.. All my pics/vids are instantly uploaded to Photobucket as soon as I snap them, contacts/calendars/email are saved to Google. You can usually always just re-download ROMs/mods, not that you would instantly need them anyways if your phone is gone - plus anything like that you felt was too important to loose should be backed up to Box/Dropbox anyways. Did I miss anything that might be on the card you think you need? Because I almost guarantee I can find/already have a solution to that too.

You're right. It's probably that you can't teach an old dog new tricks
Another downfall of an sd card you forgot is the corruption issue. I've had a few go bad on me over the years, which probably can happen to the internal one also but hopefully the quality is better with an oem.
I don't like the mtp either. I've setup gmtp for my Linux box but this thing can't be easily used on just anything as a mass storage device on the road. Hate it although that may have benefits too.
I do have a Nook Color that can be brought back to life from all kinds of trouble with a bootable sd card.

Very true. There are great advantages and there are disadvantages to removable storage. For the most part it always good to have the option. I, for one, am a data hoarder and would have loved to have the option. But I am very happy with the Nexus and glad I decided to take the chance on it. That was all I meant in my first post, just that I hope your not turned off by a device you like just because of the lack of removable storage. And your right about trying to teach a old dog new tricks. I still love and prefer all my oldschool apps even though there are new ones that may look/function better lol.
Man your friend must be pissed at you..
I suggest that you take a look at this android photo recovery solution which seems very helpful.
hope this helps.

Holy sd card Barman!

Guys I got a sdcard read error this morning but everything was ok. Still could see the sdcards storage and everything. Upon further examination it randomly erased some files which included my game files and my ROMS.
anybody had this type issue before.

I haven't experienced anything like this on my Inc2, but did on my OG Droid. Somehow, a few files became corrupted. I moved all important files and re-formatted the card. Never had the issue again.
I haven't had this issue, but from time to time my sd card randomly unmounts. I have to take off the case and back, remove and re-insert the SD card, put the phone back together and reboot the phone. Very annoying since most of my apps are on the card.
Yeah I backed up everything and reformated the card. So hopefully all will be good.
Sent from my HTC Incredible 2 using xda premium
i have had this happen a couple times on my older phones (Eris, DroidX, Dinc1...)
Reformatting and trying again has worked a couple of times, but i evenutally had to replace 2 SD cards.
I have not had this problem with my Dinc2.
One thing I stopped doing was just unplugging it from my laptop after moving files back and forth.
Now I make sure to kill the connection from my phone first (and watch the explorer window close automatically on my laptop), THEN i unplug the phone.
Probably just lucky so far, but I am sticking with that process until proven that it doesn't matter :good:
Everything has been fine since it happened.

When using USB storage from your phone you always want to safely remove the USB device from within the OS first before turning off USB storage on your phone.

[Q] Phone freezes when trying to access photos on ext. SD Card

I have 812 pictures in my Camera album on my external Toshiba 32GB Class 10 SD card. When I first got the phone in December, everything worked great, even after transferring from my EVO 3D. Now, whenever I try to access my stuff on my SD card through the Gallery app, it just freezes. I can hit home and exit the app, but back doesn't work and I cannot scroll anywhere. I can still access pictures via ASTRO and save stuff on to it..I just don't anymore, in case it goes corrupt. Any solutions? I tried searching, but no one seems to have the same problem as me..
Lol. Sounds like a simple cache issue with the gallery. Go to settings, application manager, all apps, find gallery, try clearing cache, and if that doesn't solve the problem, delete data. This will not delete your images. I think it may or may not delete your thumbnails. Just scroll over the images again and a thumbnail is remade. Nothing will harm your photos.

hmmm... I would normally say that the 800+ images in one gallery might be the cause of the problem. But you say that it was working fine previously. Even then, I'd recommend to split the images into different folders (maybe based on month they were taken) to minimize the amount of thumbnails that gallery has to process and look through.
I'm assuming you've done the MA6 and MB1 updates. Perhaps upgrading the phone to 4.1.2 caused this? I haven't heard of anything similar on XDA, but I'd stick with kkarson's approach and clear cache from the gallery app. Hope that works for ya!
Already tried clearing the cache and data from the Application Manager, but still the same results. I have a folder of old camera photos from my EVO 3D with 1780 photos in it, and it opens and I can view the photos perfectly fine, with no lag or freezing. But when I open the "Camera" folder on the ext. SD card, it just freezes and I have to go back to the home screen. I just upgraded to MB1 today and still the same results..

Maybe there's corrupted files on the SD card causing the phone to choke when it tries to read them. If you have windows 7 or XP you can put the card in your pc, (with a card reader or usb card reader), then right click on the card and choose properties. Select the tools tab in the properties box. The first option is error checking which will scan the disk and fix errors (if fix errors is checked). However, if there are corrupted files on the SD card it might be going bad and should be reformatted.
I have the same issue. I havent found a fix. I even formatted my external SD card.. didnt help.

I'm looking at a Sandisk 32GB class 10 ultra card that I got right after xmas so it's only 3 mopnths old. It started spitting out corrupt files after only 1 month. Eventually I'll get another card. But if my phone ever random restarts, or suddenly locks up, or I notice media is using a lot of battery, I know if I run scan disk on the card it will show errors. It lasts for a few weeks between formats.
There are also tons of posts from people that have had sd card failures on this phone (also with new cards).

Dont worry you're not alone, theres a thread in general that had a ton of posts and the thread title was "If your sdcard failed on you, what recovery were you on?"
Many have had to purchase 2 or 3 cards until they got one that didnt go bad or corrupted. If you got the sdcard (the one that failed) very recently, you could call the manufacturer and tell them it failed on you, I'm sure they would send a replacement because I've seen others do it and they got their replacements in a timely manner

Micro SD Card mount problem

Hey folks, I have a bit of a problem here. I just recently started having this problem of my micro sd card not being able to be mounted to my GS3 for anything. I don't know what the problem is nor how it can be rectified? So it's known, I'm rooted with the latest CW recovery mod for JB fw version 4.2.1. I tried recovering to factory settings but that doesn't work because I have wiped all my caches. Any ideas as to what I can do to fix this issue? I have no problem losing full, permanent root access by the way but also keep in mind that I currently do not have a computer of any kind. I was able to gain permanent root access when I borrowed my buddy's laptop last week but gave his laptop back.
The message I always see on my phone when I go to manually mount my SD Card in Settings is ..."Your SD Card is ready to be removed."

Honestly, this sounds like your SD Card is in its last days, so to speak. This happens quite frequently and they just do not last forever.
What brand is it?
What is its class and size?
How old is it?
Where did you buy it?
If you boot into CWM, can you mount it there?
Your best bet is to try your best to get any important info off of it, then format it. If you have the space, copy everything important to your Internal SD, then format it through the settings menu. If that doesnt help, you will need to try again from a computer. Use the SD formatter tool from http://www.sdcard.org
I am assuming the card was working fine on your phone and this just started happening recently.

The SD Card is a legit 64GB, Class 10, micro SD Card that I bought not even a year ago from Amazon for $55. It's the card that looks half red and hald grey. I had a ton of stuff on it too... movies, about 2k songs, tv show series, hundreds of pics, paid-for apps, emulated games and more. I think once I flashed a new different rom from the original regular CW 4.2.1, that's when my card was wiped clean. Now I can sometimes go to my sc card in the EZ Explorer Android app and it shows that my card has no files on it whatsoever.
Oh, I also get an error message of something like "cannot mount sd card... error." .... when I mount my card in the CW Recovery screen. I've also tried adding new files to the sd card and when I go back later that day or the next day, those files were wiped clean like they were never written to the card.
So now, the only place I can save files to is my internal phone memory.
So sad and blue...

The SD Card is a legit 64GB, Class 10, micro SD Card that I bought not even a year ago from Amazon for $55. It's the card that looks half red and hald grey. Yup, sounds like its on its way out. Unless you specifically tell cwm to do so, it doesn't touch your external sd. Some people have made the mistake and wiped out their data by not paying attention to what they're doing.
Anyway, there are data recovery tools you can try to use. Many people have had some success recovering info off of flash memory like that.
Sounds like it was a sandisk, but it should be clearly labelled as such. If its not its probably a knock off. Youd be surprised how many fakes are out there. Even highly reputable sellers have been known to sell cheap knock off sdcards. They don't do it on purpose of course, but I've even seen where they came from stores like Best Buy. The last time I looked I think Samsung, Kingston and Sandisk were the most popular targets for fake sdcard dealers.
This is why I only buy Samsung brand cards, and only from sellers who are Samsung Authorized Dealers. They buy direct from Samsung so you can be confident that you are getting a real one.
Even so, the best ones are still known to fail. I'd google for flash memory data recovery to see if you can rescue some stuff. And I would replace the card.
Its always a good idea to keep a backup even of your sd data. Sorry for your troubles.

Thanks man, you've been a tremendous help with this issue! I will try recovering my stuff on my card later using recovery software. Thanks a bunch!

And yes, it was clearly labeled as SanDisk too. But I, like you, have a feeling it's on its last leg.

I wish you luck with it!
When you get a new card, there are ways to tell if its a fake or not. You will have to search them out as I really don't remember, but just so you know, the info is out there.
