[Q] Modem Signal Troubleshooting Help - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

All,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from AT&T. I've recently flashed up to CM 11 (t0lte image nightly builds) using Clockwork (recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.3-t0lteatt.img). Since the flash, everything is working great for me except my mobile signal strength. The signal strength seems ok (-90 to -100 db) when the phone is just sitting idle, it seems to get mobile data fine and the wifi is also working acceptably. When I make or receive a phone call however, the signal immediately drops through the floor, and it can seldom stay connected for more than a minute or two on the call without dropping.
I've been trying to understand what I might have done that would have affected the modem hardware in this way, or to find a utility that will help me diagnose if the modem in the phone is dying or if it's a software issue. I've confirmed that things appear to be fine with the Network Signal Info app (which is quite nice btw) and with a friend who is also running CM 11 on his S3 with AT&T as well. We can stand side by side and see our network strength is nearly the same. Then he can dial my phone and we watch my signal tank while his appears to switch to HSPA+ and get better. I've compared the APN's and other mobile settings and they're identical as his S3. I've looked or modem roms to flash and try to "fix" the modem, but not really had a good feeling about the few that I've found. It's a problem, but I certainly don't want to make it worse.
Thanks so much to the Clockwork and CM teams for their hard work and the xda forums for all the great information! Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's making the phone functions basically unusable at this point.

I flashed up from the 4.3 stock update the AT&T (finally) rolled out. The device formerly said it was an SGH-I317 (AT&T Note 2). Now it says that it's a GT-N7105 but that seems to be normal for the t0lte CM images. I know normally you wouldn't want to flash to a different ROM than specifically is for your device, but I used t0lte because of this page:
wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/NOTE2LTEFAQ (not allowed to post links sorry)
From the Network Signal Info app - System Information tab:
Device/Model: t0lte / GT-N7105
Android: KitKat - Version 4.4.2

GSM - GNEX Signal Drop Solution - Working ROM,Radio,Kernel combos. POST HERE...

***EDIT*** I believe that I have found the solution to this issue (at least for me) by flashing the FuGuMod Kernel as advised to do by 2 users (jetrii and slyydrr) who advised me of this in the following thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487056 on pages 7 and 8 respectively.
This fix may NOT work for you but I can say that it has worked for me. Please see post #33 (and onward) in this thread.
I have painstakingly been trying to find a solution to this issue and it SEEMS as if I have FINALLY found one so if I have helped you in any way then I ask that you please press the "Thanks" button and please visit the thread above and say thanks to jetrii and slyydrr as well. I also recommend that if this works for you that you go to the FuGuMod thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438417 and pay tribute to nikademus for his kernel!!! I know I sure have... Also... Make SURE that you flash the correct kernel version for your ROM ie: 4.0.3 ROM = 4.0.3 Kernel, etc...
Thanks...
Hi everyone,
I have decided to start a fresh thread here as I have seen (and replied to) many threads regarding people with the GSM version of the GNEX (like I have) that are suffering from random signal loss of both data and GSM services for apparently NO REASON.
If you are also experiencing these issues I ask that you please post them here so that they are easy to follow and I also ask for anyone with ANY answsers to please post them here as well. Also... Please post what firmware you are running and any steps you have tried to fix this issue be them a failure or a success. I have done the following...
I am currently on the FoxHound v1.0 AOSP 4.0.3 firmware and experience these random signal drops. I have flashed NUMEROUS radios / modems to try and fix this with no success. I had been told by someone that the issue MAY be a BUG in the 4.0.3 AOSP ROMS but I have a hard time believing this as some people do NOT experience these same issues while on 4.0.3 ROMS.
What did work was to flash to the Android Revolution 4.0.2 ROM and on this I do NOT experience these random drops which COULD mean that the problem DOES lie in the AOSP builds of 4.0.3 but again... I have a difficult time believing this but it could be true. Also... Stock firmware (4.0.1) for me here in Canada does not experience these random signal losses either.
This is very annoying as I want to run the 4.0.3 custom ROMS for their customization capabilities, etc but I cannot keep my device in a USABLE state when on 4.0.3 so I have to go back to my trusty SGSII.
Again, please post here to voice your concerns and opinions on this and perhaps SOMEONE will be able to find us a solution.
Thanks,
are you using your carrier supplied radio?

Yup. Im on UGKL1 which is the radio that shipped on my device. I have also tried other radios (XXKL1, UGKK7, XXKG6, etc) as I mentioned as well and I still experience the same issue and others have mentioned the same things as well with no successes.
There was this one time that I had lost signal randomly (while on stock unmodified out of the box ICS) but I was able to get it back with a factory reset. After that it never happened to me again.

Thanks for the comment. May I ask what Radio your device has on it? Are you running any sort of custom ROM now? If so, what are you running?
Right now the radio is KK6 (im on stock yakju 4.0.2 now) but at the time it was what came with the phone (shipped from Rogers)

Hmmmm... Interesting... You got an OTA update to 4.0.2? I have seen other posts that people here in Canada are complaining that they have not received ANY OTA updates at all... When did you get this?
Since I have been on a custom ROM I have not seen this update obviously...
I'm on GSM with Rogers as well. I haven't noticed any significant signal drops with the exception of my basement (no cell phones get signal there - its a fortress lol). I am on 4.0.3 as well. I have read that the 4.0.4 has improved radio... so it may be worth looking into. I saw a WIP 4.0.4 GSM Rom here.
I've been experiencing this as well. I'll have a great signal, then suddenly it totally disappears, and after a few seconds the signal comes back. It's even happened during voice calls as well. I experienced this on the stock device (4.0.1). I'm now using the GummyNex rom on 4.0.3 (w/ a stock radio), and I'm still experiencing these random signal loses. (T-mobile USA in NYC, btw).
It's not a constant problem, but it happens a few times a day. enough to be an mild annoyance.

Hmmmmm... I ONLY seem to get these signal drops on 4.0.3... Weird... You have a GSM device right? Not CDMA - LTE?
I found something new to try when I get home but if anyone may want to try it now and post your results it would be very helpful and appreciated.
This is a radio from the Japanese variant of the GNEX and most people who have tried it have had good success with it... See the link below...

I THINK I am experiencing this. My phone keeps going from H+ to 3G non stop at the top. How can you tell if your signal is being dropped? (sorry new to this) I've seen posts with a network screen? showing connection but I can't seem to find this.
Haven't had any issues as far as that. There were times when I was using the browser and it said network error but everything still worked.

You will notice because the signal bars icon will go "completely blank" and for example... If you are on your lockscreen and you can see the name of your provider...It will disappear completely for a couple of seconds and then come back...
No I guess I am not experiencing this. I'm not exactly sure what the difference between H+ and 3G is but my phone seems to stay in 3G until it transfers data, when its transferring data, it goes into H+, then back into 3G. Maybe this is normal. I was just curious because I did flash Yakju and the radios when i bought it.

Well, when I first flashed 4.0.1 yakju I got notifications of being able to upgrade it OTA. However, at the time I must of messed something up when I flashed it because the updates werent successful when I went to update it. So I got fed up with it and I flashed 4.0.2 manually via fastboot.

So I flashed this radio and I get SOMEWHAT better stability but it only accesses the EDGE network and NO 3G/H... Guess this is a no go too...
HD Rom, Latest build.
Radio - XXKK6
Had the stock radio with the HD Rom, and thought that my random lost connections on market were due to my not flashing the recommended radio. Flashed the recommended radio (current), and still experienced them. Signal is better, and oddly enough voice doesn't get lost. Phone doesn't show that there is no signal, in fact it is at 3 bars on H.
Edit: I use a regional carrier, that doesn't list APN settings. By leaving APN type blank, I seemed to have solved the problem. Also dramatically increased the signal strength (Using Network Signal app).

Strange signal reading after updating to 4.2.2

I updated to the latest version of the ROM posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737849
Now I get one bar for my mobile network, but it seems to be working fine.
Attached is a screenshot of my signal readings. As you can see the number is off the charts crazy.
I need to figure out how to get the system to properly recogzine and display the mobile signal strength again.
Thanks is advance for any help you can provide.
R: Strange signal reading after updating to 4.2.2
Yeah I have this strange reading too on 4.2.2! One single bar and strange numbers!
But this happens only sometimes when unlocking the screen after standby. One second after unlocking, this strange reading disappears and the normal signal is showed. I dont think the network is down because i can receive calls in standby.
OP try to reflash the modem part with fastboot or try downgrading to 4.2.1 baseband

I tried downgrading the radio and still have the issue.
I think I just need a setting reset or some sort of data of cache cleared because as far as I can tell I still get a good signal, it's just that the stupid notification is displaying it way out of whack.
I had the same issue last night after trying out 4.2.2, and I ended up going back to 4.1.2 due to fluctuating 3G, no 4G, slow GPS lock, and 1/4 the battery life. 4.2.x is a huge leap backwards for this device IMHO.

I wouldn't say that because 4.2.1 was totally fine for me. Also like I said, the signal seems fine. I can make and receive calls and use data without issue. Just sucks that if I ever did go in an area with poor reception I wouldn't be able to know by looking at the signal meter.
Not all Galaxy Nexus mainboards can take 4.2.2. Mine can't, or any 4.2.x for that matter. 4.1.2 works flawlessly though.
I had a similar scenario with my desktop and laptop. My desktop has issues upgrading to Windows 8, but runs Windows 7 perfectly. My laptop on the other hand, is twice as fast on Windows 8 than 7, and doesn't have any issues at all. Both are Core i5's with identical 64GB SSD's and 8GB RAM each.
Windows 8 doesn't add any missing features to my desktop, so I had to evaluate exactly why I wanted it so badly. The only things I could think of were prestige in the IT community and bragging rights, neither of which are truly important factors in how personal computing enhances my life. So, I went back to Windows 7 and decided to be happy with what I have.
R: Strange signal reading after updating to 4.2.2
Try to wipe all and reflash (via fastboot) 4.2.1 from official image by google server and see if it's ok (this excludes some sort of hw issue).
Then get the OTA update to 4.2.2 and check now.
I'm curious to find the origin of this because like I said, I'm suffering of a similar problem.

Fixed!
I used GetRIL to update the Radio interface layer to match the update and everything's perfect now.
R: Strange signal reading after updating to 4.2.2
I have always had ril and radio matched, but I still get strange readings sometimes on device wakeup.

[Q] Still have that signal issue... Any advice appreciated.

First off, I've read dozens of threads relating to this issue and no one seems to have come up with a solid, concrete answer, apart from returning phones for a replacement (and often still having the issue).
I recently acquired a Gnex second hand that has presented the signal loss issue. I am coming from a Nexus S which gets full blue HSDPA bars of signal indoors on my desk. When I place the same sim into the Gnex, I get nothing but an X. Every now and then it registers on the network (Showing "YES OPTUS" - my provider here in Australia), but still no signal.
When I got the phone it was running Android Revolution HD 9.0 with a non-stock kernel (I didn't take note before wiping the device). No luck there with signal. I then flashed to 4.2.2 under Android Revolution HD 10.0. Still no signal. Since then I have tried:
- Lean Kernel
- Air Kernel
- SlimBean Rom
- About half a dozen different modems/basebands, local, european, north american, etc. Finally settled on XXLA02 as that was recommended for Australian users that aren't on Telstra/Vodafone (850MHZ).
- Matching RIL's to the basebands
None of the above options made an improvement. On the air kernel, I would see the signal (using *#*#4636#*#*) chance from UMTS to EDGE to GPRS to HSDPA to EDGE etc over and over, sometimes showing one grey bar on Edge. I could go outside and see one grey HSDPA bar stay there, but you still couldn't use data. Browsers would fail and the playstore wouldn't open without a connection.
As of today I have restored the phone using fastboot to the earliest available Google factory image (4.0.4). I unrooted the phone and relocked the bootloader, just back to complete stock. The modem that comes with the google image is XXLA02. In this current state, there is still no signal inside, where I would have full bars on the Nexus S, but when outside fiddling with the service menu, selecting AUS from the GSM/UMTS band selection menu gave me a reasonable HSDPA signal. Though it was erratic. It would fluctuate from 3/4 to 0/4, to 1/4 over and over and both upstream and downstream indicators would be going, yet nothing was coming through.
Trying to open the playstore was awful, but it eventually worked. I managed to get the Speedtest.net app down after a few failed attempts and ran a test to the nearest OPTUS server. The results came back as:
Ping: 235ms
D/L: 576kbps
U/L: 35kbps
Which is not very good, really. As soon as I walked back inside to get the Nexus S, though, the signal dropped right away to nothing.
I took the sim out, tried the same test with the Nexus S in the same spot outside and got the following results:
Ping: 145ms
D/L: 2241kbps
U/L: 1169kbps
Which is a bit more typical for the area.
So I'm running out of ideas
As the phone was bought second hand, I don't have anywhere I can return the phone to for a replacement. Unless I contact Google directly, I don't think that will be of any help, really. Is there anything else left I could try, or is this just an expensive paperweight?
Thanks for reading.
By typing *#06# IMEI code on the display that appears is identical to the one on the box or under the battery?

[Q] Sprint GS3 Signal Reception

So this is my first flash to a different ROM on my GS3. I have been rooted for a while and decided I wanted to try a different rom on 4.2.2 coming from 4.1.2 with touchwiz. I am using the Dirty Unicorns 4.2.2 ROM and I noticed my signal reception is spotty at best. I am talking data and voice together. I flashed back to my 4.1.2 touchwiz stock rom and the reception went back to normal. I did some research on this issue and started looking into APNs. I noticed the file on the Dirty Unicorns rom is full of VZW, CREDO, Sprint... but the stock Sprint ROM only has Sprint stuff. The differences in the 2 files, only looking at the Sprint settings is slightly different still.
Is this my issue? If so should I use the stock APN file?
I am using the stock MD4 baseband and my PRL is 25015. Any thoughts or troubleshooting steps are appreciated.
I did some deeper research to find that the signal reception seems to be reporting incorrectly in the Dirty Unicorns ROM. I downloaded an app from the play store called network info II. This reported my cell reception to be the same it was on the stock MD4 touchwiz rom. I also think that the signal bar is reporting the faulty reception listed in the about section of settings. I made a few phone calls and ran Pandora on the cell network with no abnormal loss of quality.
Try a app in play store
Signal Check Lite
Gives a lot of info and signal strength for data too
I like that app better than the other one I was using... Thanks for the tip!

Back to my issue, it looks as if the phone is reporting correct numbers in the signal information fields. What it looks like it is showing is the data connection it is using. I also, sometimes, find my phone on LTE even when I connected to wireless seems interesting. I am not sure however about the signal bars at the top of the phone. Rarely ever do I see them rise above 2 bars. Maybe somebody from an AOSP rom or CM rom could chime in with an answer.. even a DEV!!
FYI: Would have posted this in the development forum but I didn't have enough posts at the time. I am also sharing my info just in case it isn't around or it helps someone else.
[SOLVED] Same problems over here
edit 10/10/13 [SOLVED]: I found this thread about Team Sonic Modem Flasher Tool. There are five available radios in the super easy package. 1-4 came up with error messages, "No SIM card," or no signal with an Unknown Baseband in the phone settings. The fifth one, "LI3" radio solved my problems.
The Flasher Tool doesn't have a means of backing up your current radio. Seems like as soon as you start installing these other radios, your original one (mine was an MB1) was gone. BTW, my phone Baseband was a long string of letters and numbers. The type of radio that you've got is the last three characters.
I was also experiencing problems with other ROMs than the stock rom on my Sprint Galaxy S3. I was running Cyanogenmod 10 release candidate, and it seems to me that the signal was way worse than with the stock rom. I would also be in downtown Seattle, certainly with LTE service, and still I was stuck at 3G. 4G/LTE seems to be a thing of the past with the newer ROMs that I've been enjoying.
At the moment I'm back to a stock ROM, CleanBean v4.2 with Android 4.1.2. It seems to be happier. But I won't be back to an area with normal cell service for quite some time.
An interesting idea that the ROMs were reporting the incorrect signal strength. But reporting 3G vs 4G incorrectly too? That seems like something else was wrong.
I was thinking perhaps it was the radio or something, but CM doesn't really mention anything about flashing specific radios.
Are you judging from actual numbers or the signal bar? The latter is notoriously inaccurate many times (and can vary depending on what rom you're using
As for not jumping on 4g when I should have been, that was my oops. I had the settings in the phone to only do CDMA/3G rather than LTE/CDMA/3G. I would flash the radio to the newest version and leave it at that. I heard from someone else in another thread that the radios don't get changed.

As for the feeling that the signal was reported incorrectly, I learned this. Dirty Unicorns, probably most other modded ROMs as well, are reporting the TRUE data signal strength in the signal bars. I downloaded Signal Check Lite. I compared the signal reported in the ROM to what this program says and they are identical. The bars are reporting the connected network types signal strength (ie. LTE,3G). It also says to be showing the RSSP which has been widely skeptical in most threads. If you're worried about your signal, check that program before switching away from a ROM or going back to stock. I actually kind of like them displaying the good info rather than just voice signal.
Does the kernel being used have any affect on signal reception? I'm just curious because I've switched between a few different 4.3 ROMs and the quality of signal is different between them.
When I was running Slim Bean 4.3, receiving a data signal at work wasnt a big issue. This morning I flashed Liquid Smooth 4.3 and even though the numbers being reported for signal strength are very similar, data on Liquid Smooth is almost unusable. Let me reiterate; Same phone (latest PRL), same location, same radio (MD4), same signal data numbers, using 2 different 4.3 ROMs and getting 2 extremely different usability results.
I'm not blaming either ROM, so I dont want to post in said threads, but is there a reason why this would be happening?
You are using data on the cell network and not the wifi network correct? There is a slight chance that it could but it would be mostly dependent on your modems I think. I am sure the modems and the kernel interact but that is about it. Testing for my issues, I am flashing the stock kernel back in, after doing a nandroid of course.
Disclaimer: I could be speaking rubbish. If I am please feel free to correct me, as I am still trying to learn.

Custom ROM and stock kernel don't seem to work, at least with me. Recovering from nandroid right now.

On custom ROMs you run, I think its best to run the kernel that the developer incorporated into the ROM for awhile. Then if you are sure your picking the correct kernel, you can try it out, but not before a nandroid of course. A touchwiz kernel is not going to function correctly on a AOSP ROM. Can cause alot of problems, TW & AOSP kernels are 2 totally different animals.
My battery life is sucking. I am trying to improve it so I thought I might try the stock one.

Too many factors to list can cause this, try a different ROM with a clean wipe. Never use a TW kernel on a AOSP ROM.

Why does every KK rom have data issues?

I've tried Liquidsmooth, CM Remix, Omni, and now Carbon. Every KK rom shows me the orange no data connection icon. Airplane mode toggle and wifi toggle doesn't work. Reboots only work sometimes. And that's not really a solution, rebooting my phone every 5 minutes. Why is this happening?
I only home that you switched all these ROMs with clean installs. Did you?
Of course
yea same here got a gnex on eBay having trouble getting it going ..looks like I'm going to an old ROM that my other gnex runs and at least has data connection
4.2.2. lol....
what baseband are people using for KK on gnex Verizon ?

yeah.. maybe your baseband version (radio.img) didnt suited you.
maybe broken driver ~ reflash kernel with wifi driver works for me. ( changing rom didnt change anything to radio/driver setting)
My old 4.2.2 JBSourcery gets signal just fine. And for some reason Omni gets better than the others but still cuts out.

your baseband??
sometimes when u using adblocker apps or network tweaks/mod its can easily mess your network setup. just double check if any.
Flashing roms doesnt change radios right?
the only way I can get data is if I put it right beside my network extender.
I've tried all the radios.. did I get a dud..?

rom can affects data coverage from the Rils files (in libs). usually continuously using 4.3 rils right now cause google doesn't update for gnex. gnex roms still on progress in this. CM & slim update the coverage issues so far. dont know wt others. sorry if im wrong..

I dont know what carrier you are on but when I was using my Verizon Galaxy Nexus, every ROM I flashed usually had no data on first boot. I got in the habit of rebooting the phone before I even went through the setup and after that, data had no issues. It was a known thing. Toggling airplane mode and 3g/LTE was also known to cause issues at one point. So if you clean flash, boot up and let it sit for a few seconds before going through the google setup. If data doesnt automatically connect, reboot right away. It should connect fine after that.
Yeah I'm on Verizon now. Hopefully making the switch to T-mo in about a month. The problem is not that data doesn't connect at all, the problem is that it will drop out and never come back. I live in Boston and in the subway I will lose the signal underground and it will never come back. Also my office is right in the main downtown area and I barely get a 3G signal no matter what. I know my signal strength isn't part of this problem. It's the data connection somehow becoming disconnected and staying idle that is stopping me from staying on KK.

Since you're on Verizon check shiny Rom. The guys there have done a lot of tweaking to improve data.
The reason data is problematic is partially since the gnex is no longer supported and the toro variant has had no officially android release since 4.2.2 and the ril and telephony stack have changed how they work with cdma in both 4.3 and 4.4. I believe the toro uses a bit of an older radio. Is this a problem when you disable 4g as well?

I've gotta say that Shiny ROM is just about flawless. I've never had issues getting or keeping a data connection when there's signal. I'm using the FK01/FK02 radios from 4.2.2 and the 4.2 bootloader.
I'll give my little testimony here: a basic stock rom will get you farther than a fully-featured one. I've heard the expression "mo' features, mo' bugs" and that seems to fit quite well. I'm not aware of any features in any rom that you can't get from one xposed module or another, so that's what I've been doing. I'd say give it a try and see if your data issues are resolved for good.
Shiny has always worked fine for me. I run latest everything.. bootloader, radio. CM I think worked fine for me but was ugly. Paranoid Android seems to have some connectivity issues.. I wish someone could solve this data issues. Maybe it is time to leave my nexus behind Just been waiting for another verizon nexus

I've got about 7 different Nandroids and have been switching between them to test. CM Remix which I believe is based on Slim seems to be working OK. I tried Slim this morning but still got a lot of data cut-outs

wow.. lot of roms tested. that pretty brilliant idea for solving this. just use the best. data networks really different for each country.
* i found out a different in apn setting wt different rom. slim rom only captured 4g by my local provider (APN). when im tried asob its give choice in Apn setting ( 3g /4g). my country not fully h+ at several area. so changing to 3g got better network (better low than nothing)

I don't think that applies to CDMA
