First off, I've read dozens of threads relating to this issue and no one seems to have come up with a solid, concrete answer, apart from returning phones for a replacement (and often still having the issue).
I recently acquired a Gnex second hand that has presented the signal loss issue. I am coming from a Nexus S which gets full blue HSDPA bars of signal indoors on my desk. When I place the same sim into the Gnex, I get nothing but an X. Every now and then it registers on the network (Showing "YES OPTUS" - my provider here in Australia), but still no signal.
When I got the phone it was running Android Revolution HD 9.0 with a non-stock kernel (I didn't take note before wiping the device). No luck there with signal. I then flashed to 4.2.2 under Android Revolution HD 10.0. Still no signal. Since then I have tried:
- Lean Kernel
- Air Kernel
- SlimBean Rom
- About half a dozen different modems/basebands, local, european, north american, etc. Finally settled on XXLA02 as that was recommended for Australian users that aren't on Telstra/Vodafone (850MHZ).
- Matching RIL's to the basebands
None of the above options made an improvement. On the air kernel, I would see the signal (using *#*#4636#*#*) chance from UMTS to EDGE to GPRS to HSDPA to EDGE etc over and over, sometimes showing one grey bar on Edge. I could go outside and see one grey HSDPA bar stay there, but you still couldn't use data. Browsers would fail and the playstore wouldn't open without a connection.
As of today I have restored the phone using fastboot to the earliest available Google factory image (4.0.4). I unrooted the phone and relocked the bootloader, just back to complete stock. The modem that comes with the google image is XXLA02. In this current state, there is still no signal inside, where I would have full bars on the Nexus S, but when outside fiddling with the service menu, selecting AUS from the GSM/UMTS band selection menu gave me a reasonable HSDPA signal. Though it was erratic. It would fluctuate from 3/4 to 0/4, to 1/4 over and over and both upstream and downstream indicators would be going, yet nothing was coming through.
Trying to open the playstore was awful, but it eventually worked. I managed to get the Speedtest.net app down after a few failed attempts and ran a test to the nearest OPTUS server. The results came back as:
Ping: 235ms
D/L: 576kbps
U/L: 35kbps
Which is not very good, really. As soon as I walked back inside to get the Nexus S, though, the signal dropped right away to nothing.
I took the sim out, tried the same test with the Nexus S in the same spot outside and got the following results:
Ping: 145ms
D/L: 2241kbps
U/L: 1169kbps
Which is a bit more typical for the area.
So I'm running out of ideas
As the phone was bought second hand, I don't have anywhere I can return the phone to for a replacement. Unless I contact Google directly, I don't think that will be of any help, really. Is there anything else left I could try, or is this just an expensive paperweight?
Thanks for reading.
By typing *#06# IMEI code on the display that appears is identical to the one on the box or under the battery?
Problems in call / sms and registration on the net I happened to corruption of files in the EFS.

Hi, Thanks for the response.
The IMEI shown with that code is the same as what is under the battery :good:

Cheers for the suggestion. I know it has been opened before to replace the USB daughterboard for charging, twice. I'll see if I can get it apart and have a look.

Yeah, it's sounding like I'm SOL as it doesn't seem to be a software fixable issue. Pain in the ass, really. Thanks for the info. :good:

I would update to the latest OTA update and verify you have the latest radios.
Edit: also make sure your sim card's contact points are clean and making a snug connection.

I am new to android devices and i bought an HTC desire.
I have the device for about 2 weeks now and I am noticing more and more that it gives me no service in areas where the network should be perfect,i have to restart the device to get service again.is anyone facing a similar issue?
i got that just yesterday.. wasn't sure why.. I restarted the phone and Service came back.. just thought it was an oddity until you posted. how weird.
Happens to me when I'll be indoors (where there's 0 reception) and I go outside again, the phone doesn't always lock onto a network for whatever reason. Quick way around instead of restarting the phone is to enable Flight Mode (settings > wireless > flight mode) and disable it again to turn on the phone radio.
i noticed that also, when i use an elevator it sometimes does not get the network after i go out.this is becoming an issue for me because i have to keep checking if the phone is working or not.
thanks for the tip ,makes the process easier
You could also try rooting your phone and then flashing a different compatible radio rom version as this could improve certain conditions such as GPS strength, Reception, Battery life, Wi-Fi, etc.

I have a stock Desire locked in Vodafone, just did the last Firmware over the air Update and the radio updated from the worst version 5.0.0.something to 6.0.0.02 (I think, not the latest, the one before that).
Reception improoved, not by much, but to some extent. But now it prefferes to jump faster to GPRS data than before. So when I move around the house some people might get a busy tone because weather or mail is updating, and THIS IS FRUSTRATING ...
I tried from the *#*#info#*#* menu to limit it to GSM (PRL) but it made no difference.
Also it gets hot, 10 minutes of internet browsing through wi-fi/3g gets it up to 35 37Celsius and that is HOT ... Is this normal ?
Yeah - I noticed this over the weekend too.
Not for calls, but just for data.
I think it might be to do with Juice Defender.
I actually did a factory reset, just to get my data to work again.
Same problem occurred this morning, so I binned Juice Defender, and it worked immediately afterwards.
FWIW, mines is a TMob Desire...

Actually I did not want to root it since rumors have it that there will be an update on the 23rd of this month to Froyo
I was using a different Radio version but have not flashed back to the original stock version (04.00.05.11) already, after browsing for 10 mins or so, the battery temp rises to a max of 29.5 degrees celcius, which is more reasonable than 35-37 degrees celcius. Sticking with this version for now.
Having the same problem the data goes off all the time and i have to restart to get it back on. recently my phone has been getting hot after very little use.
I am rooted running froyo with the latest radio.
It happened to me today .I am on stock 2.2 , no root. I take the phone from pocket and try to call , its does not go . Now I look into phone and it says "No service " .What crap ? . Now restarted the phone and service is back .The Android is not stable enough still .Basic things like calling should be rock stable .
Hey guys - my VZW Gnex (it's a refurb to replace my old one with a bad screen) has been having excessive network dropouts lately. When I boot the phone, it doesn't acquire signal for over a minute, when I place a call I lose signal afterwards, and data drops out randomly. The device will say it's connected (blue bars), although I cannot use the internet. Also, it'll randomly loose cellular connectivity, although indicate that it has signal. I'll go to send a text and it'll immediately have send errors, and I am unable to make or receive calls, even though it shows I have signal. To fix, a reboot is always necessary. This has happened on 4.3 (crDroid) and 4.2.2 (CM 10.1.3 stable). It has happened across all the different radios, 4.0.4 and up, and across several different kernels. Does anyone have suggestions, the phone isn't really usable if people can't get in touch and I'm unaware that they can't.
EDIT: When I go into the phone info menu *#*#4636*#*# when the radio has no data, it says preferred network is "unknown." If I change it, the setting immediately goes back to unknown.
U might need to go through the insurance and get another one.

This is a known issue with 4.3 ROMs. I'm not sure about 4.2.2. It looks like CM 10.2 may have a fix for it in the next nightly. One known fix is to edit build.prop to include
ro.telepohny.default_cdma_sub=0
Thank has worked for me.

All,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from AT&T. I've recently flashed up to CM 11 (t0lte image nightly builds) using Clockwork (recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.3-t0lteatt.img). Since the flash, everything is working great for me except my mobile signal strength. The signal strength seems ok (-90 to -100 db) when the phone is just sitting idle, it seems to get mobile data fine and the wifi is also working acceptably. When I make or receive a phone call however, the signal immediately drops through the floor, and it can seldom stay connected for more than a minute or two on the call without dropping.
I've been trying to understand what I might have done that would have affected the modem hardware in this way, or to find a utility that will help me diagnose if the modem in the phone is dying or if it's a software issue. I've confirmed that things appear to be fine with the Network Signal Info app (which is quite nice btw) and with a friend who is also running CM 11 on his S3 with AT&T as well. We can stand side by side and see our network strength is nearly the same. Then he can dial my phone and we watch my signal tank while his appears to switch to HSPA+ and get better. I've compared the APN's and other mobile settings and they're identical as his S3. I've looked or modem roms to flash and try to "fix" the modem, but not really had a good feeling about the few that I've found. It's a problem, but I certainly don't want to make it worse.
Thanks so much to the Clockwork and CM teams for their hard work and the xda forums for all the great information! Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's making the phone functions basically unusable at this point.

I flashed up from the 4.3 stock update the AT&T (finally) rolled out. The device formerly said it was an SGH-I317 (AT&T Note 2). Now it says that it's a GT-N7105 but that seems to be normal for the t0lte CM images. I know normally you wouldn't want to flash to a different ROM than specifically is for your device, but I used t0lte because of this page:

Hello guys, my phone fails to connect to the Internet under a specific circumstance even though it receives 5-bar HSPA signal. This problem is a bit tricky to reproduce. First, I'd like to say that it's a 4G plan and my phone IS ABLE to receive 4G signal and has connection to the Internet wheb no problem occurs. When I go to some places that my phone receives 2-bar signal only (e.g. in Elevator, tunnel, etc.), it'll drop to HSPA with 2 or 3-bar signal. It seems normal, right? But then I go to somewhere that's supposed to have 5-bar signal or even has a clear blue sky above, my phone receives 5-bar HSPA signal with NO connection at all! Here I say No connection instead of no Internet connection is that it can't even receive or make any call when the problem occurs. The phone will obtain 4G signal again only after turning off and on mobile network or Airplane mode. Otherwise, it just sticks to this status forever. Or if I wait for an enough time, which varies from a few minutes to half an hour, it'll eventually have an X on the signal bar and reset the connection to work again. This problem's already driven me crazy! May someone help me please:crying:
I have an S-off unlocked HTC_622 HK version device (was changed to superCID recently). It went through every version of firmware from 1.80.708.X to 2.28.401.9 and both HK stock ROM and LeeDroid ROM.
Edit: It also happens sometimes when it connects to 4G.
I have used an unlocked HTC 10 with T-Mobile service and haven't had this issue, but I had similar issue when on WiFi.

No, never dropped it. It's been like this for a long time. I thought that was because of faulty SIM card at first, but it turns out the SIM card has nothing to do with the problem.
Send it to service then. It may could be a hardware issue
if you reset everything back to original does it still have the same issues? If so then probably a rma request is needed

I consider doing it all the time since it's happened. Last time I called for a RMA because of touchscreen unresponsiveness along with signal issue. They just replaced the screen and did nothing with this issue. What concerns me most is the phone looks and behaves like 120% "normal" as long as it doesn't undergo the "specific circumstance" I mentioned. Looks like I need to state very very clearly about the problem this time.

At some point, I'd been using stock HK ROM and kernel for a week or two with root only. It still had the same issue.
Hi
I have quite the same issue as you with my phone except it is with 4G. I explain, some time I can have a full 4G strengh (4 bar signal) and still cannot access internet, or send SMS. It seems that my phone can send data but not receive because I'm able to make a call, but not receive one. Also people receive several time my SMS : they still appears as sending in my app and I believe their are sent but my phone seems it doesn't receive any confirmation, so it still try to send it.
If I go back to 2G/3G mode in network, everything works fine. This would be easy if 4G never works, but sometime it does so this looks like a random behavior.
I think this is a 4G band issue. I found an app called LTE Discovery that display information about your network. My phone works correctly when I'm connected to band 3 and 20 (can see the exact frequency in the app). My carrier (SFR, in France) uses also band 7 and 28, but I still need to confirm those bands work or not (seems band 7 works but not sure, this might be specific frequencies of this band that fail).
And when my phone does not work, the app fail to display the exact frequency I'm using.
I have an unlocked boot loader, Venom rom 4.2 (Android 7) and an old firmware (1.80.xxx). Issue started to shwo when I was using Marshmallow, and a full wipe and rom reinstallation didn't fix it.
Does it looks like your issue?

It really looks like for the part of 4G connection. AFAIK LTE doesn't handle phone call and SMS? Have you tried to test with other SIM cards and phones?
I also use LTE Discovery to test my phone. My carrier uses LTE band 3, 7, 8. My phone does receive signal of all these bands and works fine with band 3, 7 even with 1-bar signal. But for band 8, nothing about Internet works normally except for phone calling.
Seems my last resort will be switching my phone with my friend's (also HTC 10) to test with this problem.
Hi,
It seems I managed to solve my issue. For the moment I have working LTE at home, will try at works tommorow.
I simply update my firmware to 1.95.401 (was on 1.80.xxx) and it seems to works so far.
Maybe reflashing your firmware (if it is possible) could correct the issue?

I think you'll be "pleased" to know you're not alone:
I have the exact same issue, SFR , HTC 10, Venon rom 4.2.
I had a couple of exchanges with carrier support, always the same answer: our antenna is under repair...
The only way out on my side is to stay in 3G most of the time and then I can receive SMS, otherwise, no 4g in specific places, and very late SMS reception (I can receive SMS from 2 days prior... This happen when on 4g).
By the way, SFR made me get a 10€ discount every month when I told them I would leave, you can ask for it too.

I've been on 2.28.401.xxx since a couple of weeks, I've got the issue, so maybe it's more related to a clean install?
I'll switch to 2.38.617.xxx and see where it goes
Does it appears your phone have a good connectivity when you are in 4G? I mean, my phone used to display all network bar and LTE logo but nothing seems to works.
Also, you can keep in mind that is the 4G only fail in some area, this is probably a software issue, not hardware. I also saw there was antenna repair in my area, but I was the only one to get issue. Can you compare with your mates if they also have network issue (same carrier, try to switch SIM) ?
What is your CID? Mine is HTC_034 and I couldn't install 2.xx firmware.
For me, the issue just happened, with no explaination. I didn't update firmware or install any new ROM. So yes install the new one might correct the issue for you too, if the symptoms are the same.

COnnectivity was at the max, and no traffic at all, no up or download, and no ping. That's what puzzled me.
.
Also, you can keep in mind that is the 4G only fail in some area, this is probably a software issue, not hardware. I also saw there was antenna repair in my area, but I was the only one to get issue. Can you compare with your mates if they also have network issue (same carrier, try to switch SIM) ?.

That's something I've planned to do. A bit complicated thought, I listen to music when I commute and these loss of 4g connectivity happens in places I would not stop normally...
That's one of the places I've identified, maybe you'd know this place (I doubt but how knows...)

What is your CID? Mine is HTC_034 and I couldn't install 2.xx firmware.
For me, the issue just happened, with no explaination. I didn't update firmware or install any new ROM. So yes install the new one might correct the issue for you too, if the symptoms are the same.

My CID is HTC__001 wwe, I didn't buy it from SFR, I don't remember if I tricked the CID or not. (well think so)
I have the exact same symptoms as you

Not sure of this, I checked using the network monitor in the notification bar. Up arrow were appearing but not down arrow so I assume my phone could upload but not download.
Didn't check out you place specifically, but this 2 ones for sure did not works :

Didn't buy it from SFR either, but changing CID require to be S-OFF so I assume you have the orginal one. Don't understand why there is several CID with different firmware update, for WW/US version I can but for 2 phone both buy in France, not from the carrier...
Anyway, I thought this could be linked to a specific CID and matching firmware but it doesn't obviously.
I'll try the Brancion spot later today.
Something else I was thinking about, I wonder if baseband got updated , by now I have [email protected]_41.13_F.
Something I always asked myself in fact, does Radio gets updates in Viper or any other Rom do, and if no, how to.
I guess via RUU, but for now, I can't make it to work, I have to sort out how I did before
If I'm correct radio is contained in the firmware image, and will be updated with it.
You also can flash radio if you are S-OFF.
ROM won't update neither firmware or radio.
FYI I have [email protected]_59.06_F, which seems to be more recent than yours, this may be the source of the issue (no idea what version I had previously).
I used this tools to update firmware, as I am S-ON :

I've did the tests with the new radio, the phone now switches to HSDPA or 3g depending on network condition, so it sort of fixed the issue of being stuck in 4g without actual data transfert ability
I'm in UK with a unlocked HTC10 from carphone warehouse, on the ThreeUK network.
Recently I've noticed that I no longer connect to 4g other than a few very rare occasions.
The only changes,
1. full update to the latest OS
2. I removed the sim card and put it into an old phone, when I re-inserted it into the HTC I got "network updates" which I accepted.
Things I have done after verifying mobile network/data is set to AUTO
1. delete all APN
2. reset APN to details available on my carrier website
3. Settings >backup+reset>network settings reset.
The odd thing is very occasionally it does decide it likes LTE and it works fine.. but its rare.. even if I do a reboot or toggle airplane mode.... the second I remove the sim card and put it into my old phone I have LTE, so it really isn't a signal issue.
My network have suggested a factory reset, but I am not rooted and have game data among other things that are impossible to backup. so at this stage I would rather not .
totally flummoxed by this one!!! any help or suggestions appreciated...

possible solutions:
- get new sim card
- hard reset done inside stock recovery
Sent from my hTc 10
Thanks.
I got a bit of time today, so did a factory reset.. same error still.. and again I put the sim in my old phone and bang 4g straight away..
in the HTC if I leave it in a strong signal position for several minutes I can see 4g occasionally pop up, but if I walk away from the window it goes again, even though I get 4g through the whole house on my old phone, and did on the htc when I first got it.
Actually thinking theres a hardware fault now.. bit of a strange one.. but looks like i'll have to return the phone tomorrow. we can try a different sim first in the shop
Just an update.
I spoke several times to HTC, one ran through basic resets with me no change (hardly surprising as I've already done a hard reset). this agent "sent through" details for return item for fix.. but these took days to arrive so in the meanwhile thinking they were lost I phoned again.
This agent was going to send me a email with lots of settings changes to try... this email never arrived....
Now since then I've done a lot of research online, and found that there are quite a few sites saying the htc10 on the new software has LTE issues, poor signal dropping signal etc.. IE it is my error, so why did htc support not know this? I wonder if its generic media articles or actually a "known" fault... its so hard to search here as both 4G and LTE are too short search terms..
Now Do I bother to send it back to them and be without my phone for a couple weeks?? if its software then surely they cannot do anything... I wonder how long until the next OTA update that may fix this if I just wait it out??
Really don't know what to do, I rely on my phone a lot, 4G isn't really "needed", but I do find the 3g signal is quite poor around a lot of areas I used to get good 4G.

Thanks, I'm currently on 2.41.401.3
I have good 4g on my old phone (now sold), and this htc10 was better when I first got it, now its aweful,
Can you link me the exact software youre using? I'm very new to the HTC, I assumed the europ unlocked software would be the same as USA? but I don't get Volte or Wifi calling on 3uk..
I use mirrorlink quite a lot, and like the HTC software, so i'm keen to keep on a stock rom so I can use android pay as well etc.. or is your rom custom/rooted etc? Sorry to pester, you're the first threeuk customer on this phone I've come across. any extra details/information would be awesome thanks.

So a bit of an update.. I chickened out of a software change... So got the sim changed, no difference, gotthe phone sent for repair, they updated to 401.4 but no change.. rang again, and we tried setting to 4G only using the service menu, and bop 4G signal just fine.. so it genuinely is a software bug in 7.0, the stupid thing is I had one bar at 3G, I swapped to 4g only and had 5bars!!!!! so it wasn't even like it was favouring the strongest signal.. just a shame I cannot receive phonecalls on 4g, so I need to leave it set to auto and just accept until they sort it that I rarely get 4g.. but at least I now know if I need 4g at any point I can go to the service menu and swap to 4g temporarily. he sounded like there have now been like a few reports of this, so hopefully HTC take it on board and push a software update promptly. he suggested 3-4weeks as a potential timescale, I suspect he meant months.. but fingers crossed

When you were having this problem was Chrome allowing you to access some sites, but on others saying that the DNS server could not be reached? If its same problem that you are having I can't use your work around as it's difficult to get a 4G signal where I live.

Sounds like you're having a different issue, assuming you have a data connection, and each website has no server issues, or the ISP isn't blocking the site(usually they'd say not a DNS error) then one site should load as easy as another, I have these exact same issues when I have ad-blockers enabled on certain sites (some you'd expect to work).. do you run a blocker of any form? try disabling it and trying again on that website..

No ad blocker.
I tried a variation of your solution and made the phone only connect to 3G or lower which seems to have solved the issue even when I switch back to 4G, hopefully it's not just a coincidence. Thanks for your advice.
Three UK user here, just tried the service menu 4G force and that seems to work for me, I shall see how it goes. Good for dead spot testing
So a few days later: Leaving it on means 4G pretty much everywhere I go but the obvious downside is no calls even through the ThreeInTouch app. Bit of a downer so back to watching it sit on 4G until I want to actually use it then it goes 'Hey let me check jump back to regular H for you'
