So I've been reading around but can't find or c anything, btw this is for a friends phone, not rooted, a T989 from T-Mo, the phone got updated and ever since the battery just dies fast, could anybody recommend a toggle or widget to shut or switch 3G/4G?
Thanks for any courteous help. :good:

Hi, I'm pretty sure you want just to disable 4g and stay on 3g and not go to 2g as suggested...
I would be very happy to find a way to do it since my area doesn't have 4g (DC-dual channel) coverage (I'm not even on T-Mobile network) and it's draining my battery like crazy. unfortunately, couldn't find anyway to do it, tried to flush some different radio versions but since all the recent ROMs requires JellyBean radio this is not an option anymore.
If anyone knows how to disable DC and just stay on normal 3g and can help it will be awesome.

[Q] Using 3G and 4G at the same time?

Has anyone been looking into running the 3G and 4G radios simultaneously?
Aside from the benefit of having an additional 1-2MB/s, I get very frustrated when I am in the middle of downloading something and I come into a 4G area. Since the phone will always choose 4G over 3G, the connection resets. I would love to have a way to keep the path available to the app using it.
I guess the same problem exists when Wifi is on and the phone connects to wifi while downloading over 3g or 4g.
Can this be done?
I also would love to see a dev pick this up. It could save my marriage...
great idea. Being able to simultaneously use them and multithread downloads would be awesome.
I'd be happy if someone could fix the transition from 3g to 4g and vice versa. Nothing like downloading a file from your phone and then you lose 4g and it loses the entire session and has to be redownloaded.

That's going to be unlikely, as 3G and 4G are separate networks operated by separate providers (Clear vs Sprint). That's why I want to keep the 3G connection alive.

I don't think clear wire is responsible for everyones 4g, just a select group

I could be wrong but I think sprint just resells clear wimax and calls it america's first 4g network.

When connecting to 4g or Wifi the 3g radio never really shuts off. The data part of the radio goes to sleep while the voice part remains active to send or receive calls or txts.
The 3g data service going to sleep when connected to the others is by design because it is slower than the other two services.
If you don't want the connection to reset turn 4g and wifi off, and only turn them on when you need the greater data speed. (this will also save your battery)
Also another solution is using one of the location based apps that will turn those on and off based off gps location.
Its not that i don't want to use 4g, i wish i could but its not reliable enough. If i have a large download, I'd like it to stay on the reliable network, but i still want to use the fast network.
I agree that the 3g network is still available, I'm hoping there is a way to force a static route over the 3g when needed.

Help on fixing cell standby battery drain?

Hey yall, I've got a bit of a problem with cell standby and I know it's a reception issue, hopefully you guys can help me.
You see, I live in one of the outermost neighborhoods in Jerusalem in a big building made out of thick bricks and cement...as one could imagine, reception is really bad.
My problem stems from the fact that the only way I can get 3G service is by sticking my phone right at the window and forcing it to 3G by hitting WCDMA Only in the *#*#4636#*#* menu. then I just tether to my laptop and everything is all good. After I take it off the windowsill, once it is more than a foot away, I lose all service. I forget to put it back to WCDMA preffered and it just looks for 3G all day in my pocket and I get a battery drain.
anyway I guess my question is this... is there a program or setting I can use to force it to 3g when it knows there is a 3G connection possible? WCDMA Preferred doesn't work because the EDGE network overpowers the 3G network and it would never connect unless I completely disable EDGE.
TL;DR Is there a way to make the radio default to EDGE when it is completly impossible to find any trace of 3G?
Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile Networks > Use only 2G networks
That will force your phone to use only EDGE and will put less drain on your battery when it comes to cell network.
Personally, I would move out of jeruselum and go to a place that pumps out 4g. Or at least theoretical 4g. (Hspa+)

I always do that when I don't need a fast data connection, I have a widget to switch back quick when I need to do some surfing or tethering

Disable HSPA

Hey I just came from Galaxy S and there is a way to disable Hsdpa in there which improves battery life amazingly....
I was wondering if there is a way to do that in Desire? (for my city 3g speeds are faster than hspa for some reason)...
Also is there a way to select which band the phone is connecting by 850 vs 1900 ... or to see what it is using ?
any help would be appreciated
It's in the settings someone in network
There is also a widget to totally disable mobile internet which I use to save battery
Sent from my HTC Desire
Go to Settings > Wireless & Network Settings > Mobile Networks...
That's pretty much what you can do with the Desire as far as mobile networks are concerned. GSM phones normally switch to different frequency bands depending on where they are located and in the Desire I don't think you can select which one to go for (besides it's an unnecessary feature in my opinion)...it just does it on its own. Maybe there is an app around that let's you do this?...
As for viewing which band you are on....you can't do it on a standard ROM but there might be custom ROMs or an app that let's you do this.
Update: Some apps that might interest you => 4G, CDMA, GSM & Wifi Map Viewer from Sensorly.com
=> Open Signal Maps Beta from Staircase 3, Inc.
=> Antennas from mpoly
=> Quick Settings (maybe..)
mmm none of those do anything like it...
all those either just shut off data or turn it on... im not sure if anyone has used the galaxy s
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837716
this is what im talking about... saves the phone a LOT of battery by just forcing it to use 3g instead of hspa ...
i think developers can prolly make more sense of it.. i mean if they have a way.. there has to be one in other devices ...no?

Ah, so you have a Galaxy S.....unfortunately, this is a HTC Desire forum, so it would be better if you posted this in the Galaxy S forums. You may not find the answers you are looking for here as this forum mainly handles a different device to the Galaxy S.
What I said before is only applicable to the HTC DESIRE. I thought you switched to a Desire when you mentioned you came from a Galaxy S, but I was mistaken. The apps I mentioned as mainly for monitoring the 4G, 3.5G & 3G (i think 2G too) coverage. If you are looking to switch between them (i.e. turn HSDPA off and turn 2G on) I am sure there is a way to do so...on the Desire this can be done through the Mobile Networks settings...
And no, I'm not familiar with the Galaxy S....
no i had the galaxy s... (i posted that for reference as to how its done on that)...
and ya those apps just toggle just 2g vs 3g...
im looking for a umts vs hspa toggle... (3g vs 3.5g).... because umts takes way less battery than hspa does...
tried to mess around in the band setting screen but couldnt find anything
SOLUTION
what you need is to edit /system/build.prop file
here are my settings:
ro.ril.hsxpa=0
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=1
ro.ril.hsupa.category=1
after doing the and couple?... of restarts H icon changed to 3G and it really does save battery significantly and speed is pretty much enough for browsing or email
would have thought if battery life was vital then you'd disable data completely tbh
This is somewhat network dependent. Here in Sweden I know of one network that will have you at HSXPA (H) as soon as it is possible. My network on the other hand will set to 3G when WCDMA is detected and set to H only during data traffic.
And then G if only GSM is detected.
I disable data via widget if I want to save power even further. Not that it has that much impact. There is a setting under wireless and network > mobile network at the bottom : ativate mobile data (this is translated). This setting will force the data connection to be active even if unused. You have to experiment here what setting is best for your network. On my network, if I remove the tick here (data connection will let go if not used and reconnect when needed) my battery will drain quicker. Providers with other policies might give different result.

Thanks! Very useful! For me it was only necessary to change the "ro.ril.hsxpa=0" line, then do a couple of restarts (to make it clear, a single restart wasn't enough, HSDPA was disabled only after the second restart for me).

No Internet on UMTS (3g) only works on HSDPA (3.5g)

Hello all, I'm hoping somebody will be able to help. I've got a desire HD on 3 UK (I haven't contacted them coz tech support is useless and I don't want them to know I'm on a custom rom), running LordClock's ICS 8.6.1, My data works fine on 3.5g but as soon as phone switches to 3g I get no data at all. I've tried various roms I've Googled for hours and found no solution. I've checked APNs and tried various versions found on web, I've tried changing the WCDMA preferred option in hidden menu, I've cleaned and reseated the sim, and tried turning airplane mode off and on The annoying thing is data has worked on 3g on Ice cold sandwich in the past, I think v7.3. I was wondering if it had anything to do with build prop and have changed and added various lines but with no success. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks will be given to anyone who contributes. Thanks.
What do you mean by switching from 3G to 3.5G? There's only a toggle to switch between 2G and Automatic mode (2G/3G) in ICS right? How are you switching between the 2? Also what is this hidden menu where you switch to WCDMA preferred? (Just for my knowledge. I don't know about it). Does it work for you with different ROMs?
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
Hi sashank, I meant just that when I lose a 3.5g signal and it automatically drops down to a 3g signal I'm not switching it myself, and if u go into the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* u get a hidden menu called Testing with gives u info bout network or battery, check it out, the WCDMA option is in Phone info.
Hi, I have exactly the same problem. just to clarify, I am on the 3 network too, and when I have H (HSDPA) signal, the internet works..and works well. however as soon as it changes to 3G..the internet doesn't work at all
you should consider flashing other radios

[Q] 3G/4G with Tasker

I'm on Cm 10 4.1.2 and my main goal is to have 3G on until I launch apps like youtube play music etc to have 4G going.
Well so far I'm not having any luck setting my phone to just be on 3g.
Am I just stupid here? or do I need an app or some Tasker plug in to do this?
Thank you for any help you can provide ~
Wow

I have no clue you could do that... I am the biggest noob ever.
I think you're confused on how Tmobile's "4g" works. It's not actually 4G, and runs on the same base as their 3G HSPA network. You can select between 'Edge' which is 2g, and 'high speed' which T-Mo calls 4G but is really just an improved 3G.
Hope that helps!

Hmm that's confusing because of the data icon. I see it go from E to 3G to H to H+ I figged the H's where HSPA which is what T-mobile was calling "4G"
Well if I can only chose between "2G" and "3G" I think I saw that in Tasker. I'll go play with that.
Thank you.
Yeah only way to force 4g/3g is by modding the modem. Which I have had no (successful) luck doing.

Ahhh ok. I did it on my friends Thunderbolt shocked you can't do it on the SIII.
Well I just have it so 5 mins after my screen go's off it switches to 2g and 3G once it's on. That should help the over all battery life some.
