No Internet on UMTS (3g) only works on HSDPA (3.5g) - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, I'm hoping somebody will be able to help. I've got a desire HD on 3 UK (I haven't contacted them coz tech support is useless and I don't want them to know I'm on a custom rom), running LordClock's ICS 8.6.1, My data works fine on 3.5g but as soon as phone switches to 3g I get no data at all. I've tried various roms I've Googled for hours and found no solution. I've checked APNs and tried various versions found on web, I've tried changing the WCDMA preferred option in hidden menu, I've cleaned and reseated the sim, and tried turning airplane mode off and on The annoying thing is data has worked on 3g on Ice cold sandwich in the past, I think v7.3. I was wondering if it had anything to do with build prop and have changed and added various lines but with no success. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks will be given to anyone who contributes. Thanks.

What do you mean by switching from 3G to 3.5G? There's only a toggle to switch between 2G and Automatic mode (2G/3G) in ICS right? How are you switching between the 2? Also what is this hidden menu where you switch to WCDMA preferred? (Just for my knowledge. I don't know about it). Does it work for you with different ROMs?

Hi sashank, I meant just that when I lose a 3.5g signal and it automatically drops down to a 3g signal I'm not switching it myself, and if u go into the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* u get a hidden menu called Testing with gives u info bout network or battery, check it out, the WCDMA option is in Phone info.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem. just to clarify, I am on the 3 network too, and when I have H (HSDPA) signal, the internet works..and works well. however as soon as it changes to 3G..the internet doesn't work at all

you should consider flashing other radios

Disable HSPA

Hey I just came from Galaxy S and there is a way to disable Hsdpa in there which improves battery life amazingly....
I was wondering if there is a way to do that in Desire? (for my city 3g speeds are faster than hspa for some reason)...
Also is there a way to select which band the phone is connecting by 850 vs 1900 ... or to see what it is using ?
any help would be appreciated
It's in the settings someone in network
There is also a widget to totally disable mobile internet which I use to save battery
Sent from my HTC Desire
Go to Settings > Wireless & Network Settings > Mobile Networks...
That's pretty much what you can do with the Desire as far as mobile networks are concerned. GSM phones normally switch to different frequency bands depending on where they are located and in the Desire I don't think you can select which one to go for (besides it's an unnecessary feature in my opinion)...it just does it on its own. Maybe there is an app around that let's you do this?...
As for viewing which band you are on....you can't do it on a standard ROM but there might be custom ROMs or an app that let's you do this.
Update: Some apps that might interest you => 4G, CDMA, GSM & Wifi Map Viewer from Sensorly.com
=> Open Signal Maps Beta from Staircase 3, Inc.
=> Antennas from mpoly
=> Quick Settings (maybe..)
mmm none of those do anything like it...
all those either just shut off data or turn it on... im not sure if anyone has used the galaxy s
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837716
this is what im talking about... saves the phone a LOT of battery by just forcing it to use 3g instead of hspa ...
i think developers can prolly make more sense of it.. i mean if they have a way.. there has to be one in other devices ...no?

Ah, so you have a Galaxy S.....unfortunately, this is a HTC Desire forum, so it would be better if you posted this in the Galaxy S forums. You may not find the answers you are looking for here as this forum mainly handles a different device to the Galaxy S.
What I said before is only applicable to the HTC DESIRE. I thought you switched to a Desire when you mentioned you came from a Galaxy S, but I was mistaken. The apps I mentioned as mainly for monitoring the 4G, 3.5G & 3G (i think 2G too) coverage. If you are looking to switch between them (i.e. turn HSDPA off and turn 2G on) I am sure there is a way to do so...on the Desire this can be done through the Mobile Networks settings...
And no, I'm not familiar with the Galaxy S....
no i had the galaxy s... (i posted that for reference as to how its done on that)...
and ya those apps just toggle just 2g vs 3g...
im looking for a umts vs hspa toggle... (3g vs 3.5g).... because umts takes way less battery than hspa does...
tried to mess around in the band setting screen but couldnt find anything
SOLUTION
what you need is to edit /system/build.prop file
here are my settings:
ro.ril.hsxpa=0
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=1
ro.ril.hsupa.category=1
after doing the and couple?... of restarts H icon changed to 3G and it really does save battery significantly and speed is pretty much enough for browsing or email
would have thought if battery life was vital then you'd disable data completely tbh
This is somewhat network dependent. Here in Sweden I know of one network that will have you at HSXPA (H) as soon as it is possible. My network on the other hand will set to 3G when WCDMA is detected and set to H only during data traffic.
And then G if only GSM is detected.
I disable data via widget if I want to save power even further. Not that it has that much impact. There is a setting under wireless and network > mobile network at the bottom : ativate mobile data (this is translated). This setting will force the data connection to be active even if unused. You have to experiment here what setting is best for your network. On my network, if I remove the tick here (data connection will let go if not used and reconnect when needed) my battery will drain quicker. Providers with other policies might give different result.
found something good http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909458

Thanks! Very useful! For me it was only necessary to change the "ro.ril.hsxpa=0" line, then do a couple of restarts (to make it clear, a single restart wasn't enough, HSDPA was disabled only after the second restart for me).

Can you change how the phone switches from 2G/3G

I have problems getting a 3G reception at work. My desire displays the H symbol but just doesn't connect to internet at times. If I manually switch to 2G I can connect. It's really slow but better than nothing! I can leave it on 2g all day but as the H signal works intermittently I like to try the 3g signal first before switching back to 2g.
What I would like to know is if there is there a way to change the minimum H signal the phone has to have before it goes down to E. My phone seems to prefer H even if the signal is too low to connect.
Can this be changed?
Yes.
Go to to the secret menu *#*#4636#*#* and select phone information.
Scroll down to the bottom and change
set preferred network type to GSM only.
I think this is a good idea to put through for the already excellent "Toggle2G" app. Thanks for bringing it up

Thanks, didnt know about the secret menu!
Going by the word preferred it sounds like it is what I am looking for but 'GSM only' makes me think it wont switch to 3G.
Does this mean it disables 3G completely? Couldnt I do that just by going into settings and selecting use 2g networks only?
Edit
Just searched GSM only and found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688492. A good explanation of each setting, think GSM auto (PRL) is what I am looking for as GSM only is just 2G but I can usually get a 3G signal so I'll give this a try.

[Q] problem with data connection CM 7.0.3

I have Edge access from Vodafone in India called mobile connect. I worked like a charm on stock HTC 2.2 ROM. I finally took the leap after finding HTC is not offering complete Gingerbread.
I found CM7 really good but one annoyance after having some troubles with importing SMSs.
I flashed 7.0.3 yesterday. Everything seems fine except data connection. It works randomly in my home. Works properly outside.
If my make a phone call then it connects and 'E' appears with two bars but only uploading. nothing downloads.
I tried *#*#4636#*#* and in phone information status appears as below when i choose "Enable Data connection"
==========DATA============
StatecInactiveState is connecting to vodafonegprs,1296,40427,www,,,,,,-1,*.
==========================
and after sometime is changes to
==========DATA============
StatecInactiveState disconnected with last try at 7.53PM fail because Radio not Available
==========================
I tried all options under "Set preferred network type" such as GSL Only, GSM Auto (PRL), GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) but none worked.
if Radio is not working then how are phone calls and SMS working !!!
I had flashed latest Radio also after flashing CM 7.0.3.
I read a lot about people losing 2G/3G data connection after switching from Wifi but I don't feel that is the problem with my phone.
Could anyone pls help?
Thanks in advance,
Ashish
I got the same problem. Probably. It does not work anywhere. The phone seems only uploading but it does not do anything, even the icon shows uploading. But no green icon of "H" or "E". I have GingerVillain based on CM7.
Upgrade to the 7.1.0RC release. A lot has been fixed since 7.0.3.
Swyped...
It seems that my APN settings was somehow changed - I had to set it according to my operator settings again. Dont know why or how but it was changed to "disabled_internet" instead of "internet" in APN.
it solved after I played around with radio band by pressing *#*#4636#*#*
I dont know what exactly solved it but after staying online when i was at office and outside, connection has been alive.

[Q] 3G > 2G switching issue

Hi everyone, I searched for a solution for my problem for a very long time, but found nothing. HOX has many issues with gsm network or signal, but mine HOX has a very strange issue with network mode switching. For example, I'm on 3G now and I set the WCDMA prefered in *#*#4636#*#* menu. When 3G becomes unavailable, HOX tries to switch to 2G network. But instead of switching to 2G, I get "No Sim card" icon and after ~30 second network icon disappears. I have to reboot the phone to recover the network. I made some tests and found, that this is not the hardware fault. I tried to change the radio RIL to any available and there is no difference. For now I don't know what to do, what else can I do... I will really appreciate any suggestions.
I can record a video to get things more understandable.

Way to switch between 2g-3g-4g radios

Just in case someone who has this wonderful phone needs even better battery life try switching from 4g to 3g.
Here you are you may have to fiddle around with it to get it working I stick with the preloaded radio toggles,
CDMA auto PRL = 3G
EVDO Only = 1G or 2G network not certain.
And then of course your LTE/CDMA auto.
Good luck https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...Oqy5H3znZLfFLmawQ&sig2=B9QbzOsLdQ-UdV8KD_f-sQ
You can reach that menu by dialing *#*#4636*#*#.
Remember that if you force LTE only most carriers won't let you make/receive calls nor SMS
The app seems to make things easier, and I've tried on Verizon I have forced LTE and I can still make and receive calls, I've also forced 3g and I'm still able to makes and receive calls
Can someone help me understand how to use this app? The toggles sometimes work, but sometimes doesn't. I'm trying to use this on T-mobile and so I set it to either LTE /GSM or only GSM. I don't know how to get GPS set either. I think the MM update made the radio buggy... Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have only tested this on Verizon, so that may be an issue, yet when I first installed it I had a little trouble as well try switching between the mentioned toggles, and there is a setting that says select radio band try switching that, I hope this helps good luck
As regards to your GPS that should be in your settings app under location

I toggle the 'location' button but this app says the GPS is disconnected! And my maps churn when this happens. When it's says connected, it loads fine. But toggling that off and on doesn't always make the values change in this app. The information in this app seems more accurate then the phones stock settings.
