Very Odd! I think I got a test build? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I get text on bootup and shut down, there is a LOT of extra stuff displayed in odin mode and "Dev Tools" app was preinstalled. Also, the regular Developer Options were already enabled.
This is an exchange for a bad camera....

Have you considered that this was a returned or exchanged model, that hasn't been fully wiped(erase)?

Its still a MI7 build which is old. Like the post above me said. Most likely the device you got wasn't wiped. The spot that says G.M. Carlton if that isn't you like it makes me think that was the person that had the phone before you.

Considering the build says TEST Keys, probably have an early 4.3 build. Here's a screenshot of my device. Notice the only difference is the build number.

That's me. Dang, now you know my secret identity! Lol. It was clean. Started with the regular setup. The only app different than the crap they bloat it with was the dev tools. There is another option in developer options as well, allows me to turn off DRM checking. Oh, and someone asked for the wallpaper. I'll post it up tomorrow.

Can you grab a photo of the Download/ODIN mode screen? Curious to know what "Extra Stuff" you have in there.
And have no fear, your secret identity is safe in here. Lol

I should be able to after work. I left it at home :/

Moar Pics!

Very cool, now only to figure out what superpowers come with that, lol. In all my years of custom rom flashing I've never seen anything like that. What does your download screen say? Knox still valid? This has me curious.

I've got some clearer shots at home, they would not upload yesterday for whatever reason. I also received my replacement for my replacement, so, unless there's a good reason not to, I'm sending it back today or tomorrow.

I received a replacement that did the same thing on boot up as your pictures. The only difference was the one I received was Knox 0x1 and it was for my wife who needs Knox for work so I called them and they sent me a brand new one.
But before I sent it back I oden it back to original firmware so that way the next person they sent it to did not have the same issue and then when I booted it it was fine (besides the Knox 0x1).
My Note is rooted and we would have kept the first replacement after I oden it but my wife needs Knox.

I wonder if those "test keys" contain the Knox reversal. Knox white papers say that the container is signed and the "keys" validate the originality of the kernel, Recovery, etc... Just a thought. I have zero proof to this insane theory.

ICS Carrier IQ Substitute

I could be wrong, but it looks like Sprint/Samsung have put a diagnostic app back in (similar to carrier IQ). Not sure where it is in the app settings, but you can opt out in the about phone settings. Hopefully in the actual eventual ota they let the user choose on first boot instead.
FB17 ICS version
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I think this is their way of using Carrier IQ and the average user wont even think about what it is or disabling it so they win either way.

If you're referring to com.android.samsungtest.SlateTest, then no it is not CarrierIQ in any form. Slate is a diagnostics tool that we service centers run that tests the radios and basic functions of the phone.

I know they announced work with Smith Micro, but I think that is only for data offloading, although Smith Micro does something very similar to Carrier IQ.
It is possible that at some point they may also go back to Carrier IQ as well. I think that would take place once all the lawsuits and questions regarding the EULA etc have been answered.

Just remember however this is a TEST build. right now Samsung is trying to see where things are going wrong as well as Sprint since they are most likely testing this on their network as well. If it's still there come OTA then it's something to worry about but till that point and time it would be nice to help samsung try and fix their issues.

I'd have to agree with you. While I am completely against spying of any sort without my input, this is a test build. This isn't a required update, nobody is forcing it down anyones throat. Everyone running it choose to install it. It's great that people are keeping a close eye on the movements of these companies but until there is legitimate cause for concern ie. an official release, nobody should get up in arms about this.

eh I'm here or there with that part right now. My reason is this with the builds being released (I'm sure some Sprint employees are using the build with devices in a test center) this could very well be to cover Sprints and samsungs butt if someone does see this app installed and it lets them know the reason for it as well. I do agree with you I don't like this stuff on my phone when it comes to an official release however right now most people (I myself till I went back to a Stock rom) were running an Alpha that does have issues so sending the data to Samsung to help them I don't see a problem with as it could work out well for us in the long run with a much better OTA release.

Samsung Put OTA System "on hold"???

Does anybody have any information to add that can possibly explain? I went to my usual 2 sites for ota releases and saw this. Had to double and triple check it! And I haven't found ANY explanation anywhere!
Basically when I checked live.samsung-updates.com I noticed the two "Notes" you can see in the screenshot. As it turns out they haven't had an ota for any device for over 2 days! I checked sammobile.com and it looks like our latest ota was their last for any device...3 days ago!
They also state that most otas for the i9300 and legacy otas have been deleted from Samsungs system!
Can anyone enlighten me as to whats going on here? Is this temporary or was UVALI8 the last ota we will get?
It just seems odd that there isnt hardly any info about this and that the update sites have seemed rather quiet about it. (Or is this something that happens enough to be normal and I just never noticed before?)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Maybe clearing them out getting ready for official.
I think there getting it ready for the i9300 Jb release
Maybe they are waiting for a fix to the NFC vulnerability before publishing anything?
Then why would they take their entire ota system offline? The i9300 wasn't the only device they had otas for. Im talking about every Samsung device worldwide is no longer getting the leaked otas.
Honestly I just threw the info about the deleted ones because it was right there.
What im curious about is why they took down the whole ota system apparently and if its temporary.
Seems like not one device has had an ota leak in 3 days. Kind of unusual I thought.
I guess not though. Oh well. Thanks anyway guys.

It has said that for a couple weeks now. They are referring to their own site that posts the otas. It went down for a few days and now needs fixing. ( notice there is no info about versions). They posted that originally saying they were on vacation and would have everything back to normal by that date.
The 2 notes Im referring to were put up yesterday and are referring to Samsungs system, not their site. (They cant get otas anymore because Samsungs OTA system is "on hold")
Also notice that they haven't had an ota for going on 3 days now while sammobile hasnt had one since our UVALI8 going on 4-5 days ago. Im pretty certain they usually have several everyday. They post otas for all Samsung devices all over the world. Or at least they used to?
On hold sounds temporary but youd think there might be a little more info about it somewhere.

No kidding! Like you said, we would think that if there was a problem or they were doing significant maintenance they would have posted SOMETHING to let people know. Maybe in some weird way could it be related to one of the lawsuits? It's disconcerting that all of a sudden everything coming from them in regards to the updates for ALL devices would just drop of like it has. I suppose that's why you made this thread

Thats pretty much why. I dont mind waiting however long it takes for new updates, but yeah when they just stop like that for everything it makes me wonder why.
I do understand that the otas are not official, just leaked, and may not warrant explanation from Samsung themselves, but what I posted in the op was ALL I could find! No one even discussing it just seems odd to me.
I would have thought its becsuse Sammy doesn't want these leaks getting out, but with there being established web sites devoted to getting them out for a while now, its not like they haven't known about it. Im sure they've been taking full advantage of it for testing and fixes like you find in our dev section.
But yeah, after finding no discussions or good info at all, I decided to post what I knew here. You never know who knows or found something I couldn't. Or maybe one of the guys that had a bead on the ota releases knows something theyd be willing to share?

It very well could be maintenance. But then i have to ask why they deleted the i9300 otas? Maintenance...could be. Its just the lack of any information that made me wonder. Usually stuff like that gets mentioned on sites like sammobile, but I didn't even see it in their forums. I didnt even realize it had happened till yesterday.

I believe the official fw updates go out as ota patches from tmobile. But you can download the full fw from Samsung or one of the ota sites. They roll out fota updates in phases so doubt they are lacking the infrastructure for it anyway.

Dear Samsung customers,
There will be scheduled Smart Hub maintenance will occuring on Tuesday, September 25th from 9:00 PM - 5:00 AM (EST). During this time you may experience difficulties connecting to Smart Hub servers and using various functions of the Smart Hub service (App download, App launch, Smart Hub ID creation, etc). Do not setup repair service for Smart Hub issues during this time. The Smart Hub service should be restored at or shortly after 5:00 AM (EST).
Thx man. At least you got an email about that though.
I suppose it could be related if they are doing massive network upgrades or something. Otherwise one probably has no bearing on the other.
Lol. Isnt that the same day they're offering the avengers for free?

I do not think I did it with wrong files. I made a tar from the img file I got from clockworkmod.com so I am sure it was clean. I am wondering if perhaps it screwed up because I had changed build.prop to say the device was "Galaxy Nexus" for Wallet to work properly. And maybe that mod I made confused it and somehow flashed something for a Nexus instead and that is why it wont function. If I had it to do again, I would have changed the build.prop back for few moments while I changed the recovery image. All of this was simply to update CWM to newest 6.0.2.8 since ROM Manager told me there was new one. I wish I had ignored it and just said no. Is there no way to hard reset this thing somehow with ODIN or a key combination that say a Samsung employee tool may "flash factory" to it? Seems odd I cannot fix this on my own. No tool nothing?
I've heard the wallet needs to be reset and all that before anything new is flashed.
I haven't flashed anything since the wallet, so I haven't looked into it yet.

Look for JTAG repair. If you can't even get it to turn on, that's what needs to be done.
It's not a home job - to tools cost several times more than the service and require more specialised knowledge.
If you can get it to turn on, look into making or buying a micro-usb jig - cheap and might work if you have time to mess around.

I am certain that is the reason I have hard brick. If I had changed build.prop....changed the recovery with mobile odin....then gone and changed it back afterwards...I am sure it would not have broken the phone. At any rate, I just will have to await warranty replacement since I get mixed readings about this MTV solution that costs almost 100 bucks.
No need to change it back. Once wallet is set up and your card activated, you can set your build.prop back to t999 and Wallet will still work perfectly, it only needs to say Nexus for the install/activation.

Again, if you simply change your build.prop back to the correct values for the T999 afyer you activate Google Wallet, the entire issue would be avoided and Mobile Odin should be safe to use. I know its too late for that for the OP, but hopefully someone somewhere can learn from this.

Is there anything I can do at this point to ensure it won't install?

So apparently VZ pushed out the update to my phone this morning. When I saw it, it was just finishing "downloading firmware". Damn. Then it asked to schedule a time to install. For now I put 11 pm tonight and did NOT check the install automatically box.

If you have a custom recovery installed it won't work anyway.

You can start by searching this topic first as it's been discussed all week in several threads.

I am 100% stock unfortunately. I thought it was not possible to install a custom recovery on locked bootloader?
If you are s-off, but not unlocked, I believe you can. I'll let others with more knowledge than me chime in!

Appreciate the input. I did do a search beforehand and I didn't come across any solution for us who bought the phone after Verizon locked up the HTC Dev method.

Yep, you can definitely put in custom recovery with S-off, but unfortunately I am completely locked down. Damn you Verizon!

I might try this. So this will just put the message asleep for 24 hours (with start automatically NOT checked)?
Mine just started this morning and I am already sick of it!

Lucky! Yeah I bought the phone literally the day after Verizon locked up the HTC dev unlock method. Didn't think VZ would be that quick to plug the hole!

That's good to hear... So the process won't go ahead unless you manually click yes? I definitely did not click the "install automatically" box. But my past experience with VZ OTA updates was that they will push it through regardless if they wish (thinking back to the Thunderbolt update that took away free tethering). Basically, there would be very short window (say one a minute or so) where you had to deny the update process. The thing was, VZ would pop up these requests at random time intervals, seemingly disregarding the scheduled time you set. It was just downright mean...
Mine started up this morning too. Definitely don't want this. I'm completely stock and locked down myself.

What phone did you have before? you could use that for a few days
A reboot stopped the annoying notification about the update for me.

I thought about that, but I'm in no hurry to start switching ROMs especially after reading about people not being able to make calls all of a sudden. Granted there was a fix found, but it's just too much work for me. Besides, this phone won't be locked down forever.

I'm getting the nag every few minutes now too. It sucks. I'm locked too. I've tried quitting tons of things to stop it. No luck.
you guys can freeze apps right?
freeze
HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_VZW.apk
and
HtcOMADM_VZW.apk
that should stop it right?
Sorry I just jumped in to give insight. I will be honest I didn't search or read so if this has been said my apologies everyone. Just trying to help.
Just click back
I got this this morning as well. I never selected a time. I just click back. This will make the box go away.
I'm sure this will get annoying so hopefully someone finds root or s-off soon.

[Q] Return to Stock

I looked through the HTC One forum here but I couldn't find a full explanation. I need to return my HTC One for warranty work on the camera.
How would I return it to stock?
I'm S-OFF (via Sonic)
I'm bootloader unlocked (via HTCDev)
I'm currently running the Andybones ROM BoneStock.
Thanks all.
-------
I understand that this is super basic to many of you, but I don't want to risk bricking it while trying to get it back to stock... to prove that I have done some research.. here is what I was figuring that process might look like...
Restore nandroid backup from immediately after S-OFF.
Unsure if I need to flash RUU at this point.. basically I need the default HTC recovery.
Probably need to relock the bootloader?
I know S-ON would be the last step - if I actually need ot bother with that - but I need to make sure all of my ducks are in a row because I know if I have anything unsigned on there before I do that then I'm in a bad way.. unless I rumrunner, I suppose..
Basically, I could really use some help to make sure that I don't botch it when I just need a decent camera so I don't miss more pictures of my kids.
Thanks all.
If it were me, I'd mod the hboot with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496023
This doesn't relock but I don't think they even look let alone dig. Esp. given the huge amount of camera probs.
and then ruu back to stock.
I used the RUU in the development thread, but you have to be s-off.
I used these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2251800
Of course, just my two cents. You know the risks.

Is this a warranty exchange due to the purple hue? Just asking. It would almost be nice to have a phone that didn't have that issue, mine does. If it were me, I don't know if I would go through all the work to send it in and get it replaced. Especially since my HTC is flawless besides the purple tint. No gaps, no bends, no sharp edges, no flush power button...ect.

No, I think I could deal with that. I can't get the thing to catch focus on my intended focal point. Even when I tap the screen on my subject it just finds whatever is closest and focuses on that. I have to play peek-a-boo with the lens (cover it and uncover it with my hand) to get it to try and fall on a new object of focus.

+1 this. Same boat. Flawless except for the camera tint. Seems like a major headache to send it in. Also my device is s-off by Sonic so that'd throw $40 in the crappier and I like the piece of mind of java s-off over software.

I noticed that this camera isn't like my rez which could take almost macro close ups. I have had to make use of the focus lock to get the right thing in focus a lot. It might be software related. By the end of the week you might have a new camera app to try. I'd personally wait for that before going through that trouble.

Actually it's not since I dont have 2 conflicting beliefs. If I'm wrong about java s-off being harder to patch than software then at best I'm misinformed. But thanks for the response that served no purpose.

Well, s-off is s-off regardless. You can't patch s-off with an update. You can patch the exploit so no one can use the exploit if running the newer software, but you cannot, to my knowledge, update someone to s-on. But also, if you're like me, I'm not worried about any updates making me lose root cuz I'm not gonna let vzw update me. I'll wait for a ROM so as not to risk losing something as valuable as root.

That's what I thought. But correct if I'm wrong if we're s-off and have an unlocked bootloader can't we still load custom Roms and whatnot even if they do patch an exploit? Granted it would suck if we lost root BC so many apps need it.
Keep in mind guys, for those that wanna be ballsy with the 4.3 ota: Voodoo OTA isn't compatible with 4.3 yet. It won't save root. That's according to the Dev.

Yeah, I mean those who are already rooted don't have to worry about it. We won't lose root unless you take the update, and even then its as simple as (assuming you're s-off) flashing recovery, then root.

Indeed. My question is if Verizon patches rumrunner does that effect those of us that are java card s-off if someone makes a mistake and gets the ota without thinking? I've been wondering that just out of sheer curiosity. I generally wait for OTA zips.

No. Because like I said before, s-off is s-off. No matter which way you look at it. The only way to lose it is to turn it on s-on yourself. But even then, as long as you're not taking otas left and right, you should be safe.
