FAQ - THE BIG PICTURE​
What is ICS?
ICS is Ice Cream Sandwich - Google's latest version of Android.
- Some of the very latest phones on the market already have it installed. e.g HTC One series
- Some slightly older phones will eventually be 'upgraded' to ICS e.g Desire HD, but this may be a number of months away, and promised 'upgrades' have sometimes never been delivered at all.
- If / when it does arrive for Desire HD it may not happen for everybody at the same time, sometimes it's carrier by carrier, and finally 'retail' (non carrier branded) handsets that get the upgrade last!
- If / when it does arrive, it will be overlayed with HTC's Sense (some like it, some don't)
- In the meantime, folks are working on getting ICS on your Desire HD BEFORE it's officially released for the phone, with and without Sense (giving you a choice)
So why don't some features work?
Well, the ICS being used on Desire HD is 'taken' from officially released ICS phones like the HTC One range, or 'leaked' ROMS from similar phones.
However, those phones have slightly different hardware and features than the Desire HD - so they aren't exactly the same. This means that parts of the software have to be 'ported' to work on the Desire HD.
OK, so why is porting so difficult?
The Android O/S is 'open source' meaning that anybody can see the actual source code for themselves, and see how it all works. They can modify it and adapt it to suit their needs (good).
Phone manufacturers USE Android in their phones, but they don't have to make all their own 'extra' software open source too. They like to protect their software by keeping it secret (not so good). There are many reasons why they do this, both good and bad, but it makes porting difficult.
When developers don't have access to the source code for parts of a phone, they have to write their own!... this means they have to have highly detailed knowledge of the phone, its hardware and other software components. Sometimes they can try things by trial and error, sometimes they have knowledge from a similar phone, and sometimes they just don't know.
This is the most common issue for 'ported' ROMS. Things like Power Management, Camera, WiFi, GPS etc are the things that make one manufacturer's phone stand out from another, and therefore end up 'secret'.
This does not mean that they will never work, it only means that they take longer to get working.
Who does the porting?
The actual porting is done by surprisingly few people:
- Some guys who know 'inside secrets'
- Some guys who are just great developers but who don't have the secrets
- Some guys who can develop but need a little guidance
- Some of them are 'great guys' helping the community (and keeping their own skills up to date)
- Some of them have other motives (good and bad)
- Some of them form teams to work on different ports
Why don't all the developers work together?
Developers are people - they have all the same issues as everybody else:
- Some like working alone
- Some feel that other developers standards aren't high enough
- Some are trying to fix a specific problem that THEY want fixed
- Some teams have different goals (one team might be aiming for a port that can work on 5 different phones, whilst another team are focused on a single phone. One team may want a totally 'clean' ROM and another want a ROM with lots of customisation options built in)
- Sometimes, people just don't get along with each other
I thought the ROM makers did all this work?
You'd be wrong.
The ROM developers use the ported code to make their ROMs. Sometimes they can choose different components from the various development teams to build a ROM.
Imagine a motor car:
1) The 'developers' make the engine, wheels, steering, chassis etc
2) The ROM Makers build their car choosing the components they need for their ROM
3) The 'Modders' add custom paint colours, fancy headlights, custom interior etc
The 'developers' are not smarter than the ROM makers, and the ROM makers are not smarter than the modders. They just have different roles (and some people do all three roles!)

Nah I was testing for Paul the maintainer but he stopped then I ask the maintainer from the skyrocket thread can he build it for us and got no answer so I took it upon myself to port it thanks for the thumbs up I'm going to upload version 2 tommorow which is my personal version with working camera and modded viper audio, them able MMS app and emoji keyboard where the emoji works for Facebook and other social media apps againg thanks

Good for you dude. I also asked about progress on this after testing and was ignored. I have noticed that is a pattern with some devs, if they don't have an answer or know how to fix what's wrong they just pretend it doesn't exist. I'm glad at least you decided to try and do something yourself.
I have always gone out of my way to respect what the devs do and understand they are not obligated to do anything in reality, but this business of just ignoring people and disappearing without even as much as saying "I'm moving on" or "I just don't know how to fix it, sorry" is becoming a pet peeve of mine. This is especially a problem in this forum. In the old Exhibit forums I was never used to that. BTW before somebody gets defensive I have donated to some of these same people who are doing this, so no guilt trips please. I try to do my part to show appreciation besides words.

I appreciated I always do my research and attempt stuff on my own as well before bodering the devs too call like yourself I appreciate what they do and know their not obligated that's why I give credit to cl3kener, soupysoup and Paul Giles cause they are straight forward and have helped me in the past again thanks give it a whirl its a great ROM I will be uploading v2 tommorrow which is my personal edited version peace!!!

Omg...toootally love this ROM! I hope you can keep giving us this port! I so hope they add split view to this! And the freaking camera?? IT ALL WORKS!! 720 annnnd 1080!! Flawless as of running almost 2 days now. Theme manager isn't on it yet but the HK xposed module takes care of that problem. Please please if possible keep the ports coming. Official or not this is a very clean and smooth ROM thus far. Thank you!:highfive:

I don't get why they didn't fix the SD card issue then, here @soundsofmath comes along and gets it done. Again, good job. May have to try this sometime although I need a break from ROM switches right now.

My external SD has been broken since bk in November because of flashing 4.3 ROMs. Haven't found a fix for it but I'm fine with just 16 gigs for now. But i do believe sounds ported another cam to this. But he added a few things of his own. And artful this things pretty solid. And I've been tweaking this thing hard. And comes viper equipped. That's what sold me on this.

The test version of official 4.4 DU could not read the internal storage oddly enough, external was fine. I'm just puzzled as to why that made them quit on it unless they thought it was due to lack of interest, IDK. Maybe they just said the hell with it.

Initial impressions after using the ROM for few hours is that except for battery life, everything seems fine. However, battery life is still an issue. Its still early to pass a judgement on the battery life but can anyone tell me which governor and i/o combination will be best for multi tasking with normal apps like whatsapp, viber, twidere and google+ while delivering good batteyr life.

I couldn't have been more wrong about Battery life. I am using Gov: Ondemand, profile: powersave and i/o: row and battery saving mode is turned on. I am getting more than 5 hours on screen time with amazing standby time, losing 2-3 percent in 5 hours with no significant effect on performance. Its a pleasure to use. ROM is very stable for daily use. Took pics, apps used were whatsapp, viber, messenger, twidere, google+, hangouts, chrome and the other usual suspects. No FCs so far.
Bugs I know of:
1. You have to turn off backlight on capacitive buttons everytime you restart.
2. I couldn't change notification sounds in few apps. You might have to keep using default.
3. Slow shutter doesn't seem to be working. I will confirm it when I can.
4. Flashlight gestures isn't working for me. Music gets played with small movement of fingers on screen.
Nothing major. Loving it so far

installed the latest rom and i'm impressed
just to confirm since i could not find the appropriate settings / no search result found:
- is the camera rotation triggering the camera app like in omni rom / color OS?
- are long exposure option & grid available in native camera app?
- is the vanir updater app working since launching it does nothing

1. No, the camera rotation doesn't work and its one feature I do miss, but doesn't really come in the way considering you can also use gestures.
2. Long exposure option is there. It isn't working for me though.
3. Its getting updates as far as I know. I never cared for the update though. Its amazing already. Battery life and performance.

thx for confirming.. will retry the rom again as I've restored the default color OS with the latest update . I got the same camera malfunction bug reported on the oppo forums while taking pictures

Just in case if you are looking for manual exposure setting, you should try Omni ROM nightly in 2-3 days. Maxwen, the developer of OmniROM, said it should be in the next nightly.

Hey DHO,
Vanir was the first to get updated to 5.0 for N1. Using it and so far its great. So Thanks "A LOT"!!!
I encountered only one bug, that auto rotation wasn't working. Rest works quite nicely.
EDIT: Another bug. After I put the phone on charging, the charging text on Lockscreen doesn't disappear.

How do i download the lollipop build.. i cannot find it please help..

Resurrecting this old thread, but I just noticed there are Marshmallow builds up for this ROM. I grabbed the latest, but it wouldn't boot (didn't even seem to try - it just went straight back into Fastboot). Is it worth trying on of the other earlier builds or am I doing something wrong?

@bobsetsfire I imagine the Marshmallow builds are still Alpha, probably don't work well even if they boot up. Not sure on this but TWRP may also require an update before the 6.0 ROMs will work correctly.
I'll test it later tonight though when I get back from the pub. Although, I'm interested to know if the Lollipop ROM has working rotation. Do you happen to know if this is the case?
Edit: Rotation doesn't work on the 5.1.1, as with every other Lollipop ROM, I have no idea why. As for the Lollipop build, that also didn't work. Just to be sure, did you do a full wipe, including uninstalling Xposed?

These are the monthly releases of CM with some modifications and touch ups that will be listed below, They are meant for users who want a stable ROM without the need to flash nightly releases and risking a Nandroid, anyone who has enjoyed the stability of my Google Edition ROM should give this a go
all builds have their core features tested (Camera, bluetooth, bluetooth audio, tethering, USB audio, Data, Voice calls etc), I also adb debug each release and look for any redflags, I then set up the phone and daily drive it with a few of my testers and once I deem the release stable it will be posted here.
Note: The CM camera works but it's not the best, SnapCam HDR (Paid app) from the market is much more stable and has a ton more features (these developers only focus on the 4.4 open source camera and making it better), I highly suggest doing what I do and removing the stock Camera and Gallery and using this awesome app which also includes a gallery with more features, myself and ktoonsez swear by it. The stock files are found in system/app.

yep it's just not themed because CM theme engine takes care of all that if you wish to theme it

First release went well, I wanted to change host's because to many people were complaining about slow download speeds
so I decided to sync and build one more for you and then we'll continue with bi-weekly stables (assuming they are stable)
A2DP: Stop spamming log with buffer size
Make KeyguardMultiUserAvater fully themable
CMAccount: Remove "or" between account buttons
Add/fix APNs
Add rules to permit CTS security-related tests to run
Remove event notification checkbox preference
Note: You can dirty flash my updates but you can't report bugs in my thread until you repeat them on a full wipe. Thanks

Hi Danvdh, this rom is amazing! Seriously, I like your galaxy experience too but I'm a bit torn at the moment as to where to go. I like what I see here, so me thinks il give this a try for a little while. Awesome rom man!
Ps I'm still experiencing issues with my wife phone, maybe you or another follower of yours may have some wisdom to share.

Anything special about the GApps you uploaded ? I've gotten in the habit of using Banks minimal set of GApps with CM11 on my tablet just to minimize Google's increasing bloat.

Love the rom. looks like great and it's really smooth but for some reason I don't have any in-call audio. I hear the ringtone but can't hear people speaking and they can't hear me. It was working with my previous rom. Does that rom need a specific Baseband?

Remove Status bar notification count checkbox preference <--- main reason for this update, I don't like broken toggles in my settings menus, no idea why CM just leaves them in there, it's rather annoying when there is ZERO java controlling them
every other commit is super minor but we are fully synced up to date with CM
kk no more guys, my testers and me are tired, Everything in the damn settings menu works now so we will see how CM looks in a fortnight or so

Sounds good, work around for titanium is to set menu long press to menu and then hold menu down. Thanks for the updates

My Pandora is usable again!
Thank you so much for putting this build together. I was using your 4.3 Google Edition since 4.4.2 seems to not work well with Pandora. It kept stuttering during playback via wifi, LTE and I even tried different basebands.
I was completely happy with the second release of this ROM, but I've updated anyways. So far everything works perfectly. Awesome ROM as always. :highfive:

Edit: I have noticed that if you have the phone plugged into a charger and try to reboot, it gets stuck at the Samsung Logo. Only remedy to remove charger and hold power to turn it off then on or pull the battery. This is a clean install and its done the same with the version before this one.

Just had a FC when trying to set Lock Screen Wallpaper, it get "Unfortunately, com.android.wallpaper cropper has stopped". I can't figure out what I did wrong. Did clean install just as stated in OP. Any ideas?

Dial Pad sticks
I may try and do another install in case it was bad for any reason, but...
I noticed when I was entering numbers on the dial pad when on a call or selecting numbered options on a call, the initial number I pressed would "stick" and not release (leaving the tone playing) until I enter another number. I rebooted the phone to see if it was just random, but its consistent. This was a clean install of your current as of this post (3rd release).

I know todays is up on my server. Not sure about Nuke's
Due to the huge amounts of builds will make, every device may not be in every nightly.
But find 7 is in 8/10 folder.

edit: also your boot animation is not the correct size for commotio, haven't tried vanir yet

edit3: Vanir works really well, bluetooth, gps, wifi, dt2w/s both work, camera works, screen off circle opens camera, havent been able to start torch through off screen, mic on speakerphone works! Pretty good rom, gonna try it for a bit

@DHO I have been testing this rom for over an hour and i must say i am very impressed, other then off screen flashlight gesture not there, everything else seems to be running super smooth, i would say better than gummyrom in my opinion, very good work keep it up!

K I found 2 bugs, the rotation control in the quick toggle and settings menu causes system.apk crash and google calender is not syncing with calender widget, so I have to re-add widget every reboot
Edit: it's actually systemui that crashes

I flashed it. It run very smooth on my X9070 (China Union Telcom Version). Every thing very smooth. Only photo quality is very poor. very dull color and grain. I hope it can be improve.
Wifi signal is good. FDD-LTE in Hong Kong is 2600 and 1800 is good. I will go to China next week and test TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE possible to use or not.
