GT-N7100 Downgrade from 4.3 to 4.1.2 Help - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a device that was upgraded mistakenly to the latest 4.3 OS version. I do not want 4.3 and want to downgrade it back to 4.1.2 stock.
What would be the simplest way to do so, warranty is not an issue.
So far I've tried reflashing a stock ROM (N7100XXDME6_N7100OXXDMF1_N7100XXDMF1_HOME.tar.md5) using Odin with instructions I've found in another thread. Unfortunately it failed every time I tried, it either fails writing NAND or it goes through the whole process and fails at the end writing modem.
Is there a correct/incorrect firmware that needs to be used, how do I find out which is the right one?
Also is there an easier option to downgrade the OS ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Check out this thread and download the firmware name starting with MSR. It is a working one, BUT it works when you haven't rooted your phone or incremented the Knox.
Definitely check it out, it worked for me.

Thanks exceptionalkhan,
Downloading that ROM and trying straight away. Just to make sure, will this works no matter what version the phone is?

I just tried it and it failed .
The phone is non rooted it didn't have any Knox increement.

Try with older version odin. I have ver 1.85.

I used Odin 3.09. At the moment I managed to recover the phone back with Kies.
Is there anything I should try differently?

To be frank, let me tell you my story!
First I upgraded to 4.3 using odin and leaked firmware. Then flashed 4.3 maybe indian or chinese version. Then tried the other firmwares in the linked thread to downgrade to 4.1.2 it failed except the MSR version. And it incremented the flash counter not by one but by two. I tried both odin version 3 and 1.85. Incase of failure it lost recovery and I had to reflash 4.3 to get phone to working. Actually it was my friend's phone so I didn't root it. Thats the story. If you have good Internet speed, definitely check these other firmwares. First download these 4.3s and 4.1.2s and flash first 4.3 then downgrade using other 4.1.2s number by number and so on.... hope it helps.

Have I bricked my phone :( - Experts plz help!

Guys,
!!!!! N00B Alert - I am not an expert in what I am doing. Just following instructions from experts like you. I will try to be as technically articulate as possible !!!
I had recently (about a month ago) rooted my phone to install CM 10.2. I love CM.
In an attempt to unlock my phone I wanted to get back to stock ROM. So I googled and bumped into a way to do it from Kies (not sure if it was a good idea). I followed the instructions and boom the firmware initialization failed half way through. Now when I turn my phone on I get this error "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". So I tried again multiple times but it won't work.
Then I thought may be there is another way and googled and found this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2186967
Followed the instructions to the word, but I see the dreaded FAIL message in ODIN.
Below is the log. (I tried twice in one stretch).

Another thing is I am not able to get to recovery mode. When I try I can only get to the Firmware error screen I mentioned above.
Any help to get out of this mess would be great!
did you make sure you had the LK3 bootloader before trying to flash stock? if so I also had Odin fail while flashing this firmware. only one that worked for me was root66 firmware. i never booted all the way in but i read that you have to uncheck "auto restart" before flashing, once it is done pull battery and boot into recovery and factory reset. if that doesn't work you can do what I did. Odin flash cwm and install a rom from your sdcard

I didnt know I have to have the LK3 bootloader, may be I missed in the instructions.
Anyway, how do I flash Clockworkmod from Odin? if I can do that I can get back to CM 10.2 and then try paying for unlock code.

Make sure the bootloader that's currently on your phone is not from the 4.3 OTA update. If it is, you can't use Odin to restore a stock rom, you'll have to find a AT&T 4.3 ROM based on the leaked 4.3 AT&T ROM.

Yes I am on AT&T.
After I read your post about flashing CWM with ODIN I researched and found a method. I tried it and it PASSED!. Then my phone restarted and boom it booted directly into CM 10.2. Not sure how, felt a bit creepy. Then I updated to latest Nightly CM 11 build and brough back all my apps and my phone has LIFE right now. Thanks for the tip! :good:

May be it is, I updated to 4.3 thru OTA and after a few days rooted and installed CM 10.2. How do I check?
Then this should be the reason that ODIN didnt work for me. Which genuine source I should look at for a AT&T 4.3 ROM based on the leaked 4.3 AT&T ROM.

I believe if you were originally on 4.1 then you still have that bootloader. I dont think OTA updates the bootloader so you should be able to downgrade with the root66 if that is the case.

when you say "find" an AT&T 4.3 rom, I wish you could give me a link. I am working with a device that was handed to me that was on 4.3 then flashed to a t999 rom. Now I cannot get it to flash ANYTHING AT&T 4.3 (and I've looked all over), neither in odin, nor in recovery, except, oddly enough it will reflash the same t999 image. The radio (modem) also no longer works.

This is why your flash to stock failed, lucky for you. The MJB bootloader is not downgradable and if 'successful' is bad news...aka brick, requiring serious hacking if not JTAG service to repair. As far as ROM's go as long they do not attempt to change the bootloader (none i've seen do, but you never know) the worst that could happen is a 'status 7' fail in recovery and no change to your firmware, pertaining to the bootloader that is. There are any number of other reasons why something could go wrong during the process. MJB has been around long enough most customs ROM's have probably adapted their updater-script to include it. If not there are ways around this I (and several others) have documented elsewhere. My advice moving forward, make sure to educated yourself thoroughly before attempting anything that can brick your device and if you are not sure, ask first flash later.

I had tried to flash that via odin without success. What I was able to do to fix the issue was to flash a custom recovery via odin (TWRP). Then use the custom recovery to blind flash (no signature or md5 check) the ATT modem, and then I was able to flash the link you sent. After that it still didnt boot, so i had to reboot in TWRP, dump caches, reboot again, wait, literally like 5 minutes and it came back to life. Whew, what a day.

[Q] Downgrade S3 T999 from 4.3 to 4.1.1

I need to downgrade my Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 from 4.3 to 4.1.1 in order to unlock it.
However, when I attempt to flash with Odin 3.09, It repeatedly fails. I am using T999UVDLJC obtained from sammobile.com
My S3 was rooted, but when the flash would not work, I removed SuperSU to see if that would make the flash work. My phone is now unrooted, and the flash still will not work. Knox is removed on my phone.
Should I reroot my device? Should I downgrade to 4.1.2 first?

You cannot downgrade from 4.3 firmware. If you try to force it using alternate methods it WILL brick.
This info is included in nearly every 4.3 thread btw.

Doesn't matter, once you update to full 4.3 you can't go back to a previous firmware, and that's the fail message you get when you try to downgrade.. You can flash a ROM based on previous firmware, but that will not help you to unlock it

I read that it is possible to flash all of 4.1.1 except the bootloader. How can I do that and will it help me unlock the device?

So as others have stated it is nearly impossible to downgrade your device after being updates to 4.3. But I have found a way to unlock the bootloader on 4.3 and install ClockWorkMod. What you need to do is use the cyanogenmod installer and it will do all the work for you, even if you dont want to use cyanogenmod. It roots, unlocks, and install CWM recovery all at once.
Go to this site for a tutorial on how to do it.

Sometimes it may reboot your phone back to the Touchwiz 4.3 software but the bootloader will still be unlocked. Once it is done installing just simply put your phone into recovery and you will be able to flash any rom you want!

[Q] Might have bricked (Firmware upgrade encountered an issue) Can get to bootloader

Okay I have been having issues galore trying to update my Sprint SPH-L900 to the new 4.4. Mainly unexpected errors package when trying to install. Already wiped cache and factory resetted. Still on 4.3 I hope now Kies3 will be able to help. Sunofabit KIES CRASHES AND NOW I AM STUCK ON FIRMWARE UPGRADE ENCOUNTERED AN ISSUE! I can still get into bootloader thankfully. Trying to flash back to 4.3 or 4.1.2 gives me a sboot.bin fail on Odin.
I also tried a second computer with Kies 3 to upgrade firmware initialization and it just sat there with Kies dimmed the whole freaking night! It'll say it's downloading the necessary things to do it and then it just sits there with Kies dimmed.
I have no idea what to do What should I do from here??
Any help here please greatly appreciated!
Looks like you will have to wait for the official tar from sprint. If you can get a custom recovery flashed via odin then you will be able to run custom roms till the tar is released.

use version 6.07.9
1. open odin (recommend 1.85) and uncheck reboot option then click pda and select file
2. boot phone into download mode and connect to pc
3. flash file from odin
4. disconnect phone from pc and remove battery
5. while holding vol +, home key, power key insert battery (just to make sure it boots into recovery)
6. flash whatever rom you want aosp or touchwiz

Hi, im having similar issues and i tried your method above, with odin 1.85 and i cant get past the bootloop (samung logo) screen. I am relatively new to this and was on stock MK4 and flashed the 4.4.2 OTA file that was posted on XDA because i was too impatient to wait for the OTA. After flashing the 4.4.2 file, i decided i was going to go back to Stock MC2 (Billard's file) and just wait for the OTA updates all over again, which has proved to be stupid on my part. As i was going through the process of receiving the OTA for MK4, the phone just got hung up on the Samsung logo screen and i havent been able to get it back to normal yet.
I have tried your method above, tried going back to MK4 through an Odin Tar, tried flashing TWRP, and ive gotten nowhere. Ive spent the last two days on here, researching and downloading files that have worked for others. Im at wits end.
Any advice, aside what you've described above would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for anything you can do.
Samsung Bootloop After Updating to MK4
I'm also having a similar issue. I'm able to successfully flash garwyn's modified mk4 stock rom using odin, but the original tar file always fails instantly after attempting to flash sboot.bin. When the original tar file is flashed, the phone reports "Unsupported Version" in the download screen. I was able to flash the stock mk4 recovery and the twrp and philz custom recoveries, but I was not able to get into the recovery mode. The phone remains in the "Samsung Galaxy Note II" screen when trying to boot normally or get into recovery. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Boost Mobile Prepaid Galaxy S3 "SPH-L710T". Can it be rooted or not?

Hi everyone,
First, I am sorry that I am posting on a topic that I am sure is all over the forums. It is just I cannot find what I need and I need help.
Can the Galaxy S3 from Boost Mobile on a prepaid plan be rooted or not? This is the exact Model # "SPH-L710T". If not i get it, but if so would someone please give me a hand?
Can i get a step by step on the Tools I would need to do this and also advice on a custom ROM to load if that is possible? I am using Linux Mint 17 for a OS at the moment. I am technically inclined for the most part. I am a Network Technician and have rooted a handful of other phones in the past. Favorite being my first. Vibrant with Team Whiskey ROM few years ago.
I would use mobile ODIN if that is possible. I am all about doing everything I can directly from the phone.
Thank you in advance for any help i can get.

when did you buy the s3 from boost mobile? i work at selling and activating them and i have one my self and they all have the model # SPH-L710 with out the "T", now seeing as your with boost that would mean you're on Kit-Kat 4.4.2 aka NDC now if you can't manage to root it on NDC i would suggest PC Odin Flashing the Stock ND8 rom that will erase everything on your phone and then trying the same root methods you have tried on NDC on the ND8 4.4.2 rom
PS. Don't use Mobile Odin for flashing Stock.tar files and since your running Linux/Ubuntu i would say set up a virtual machine with Windows 7-8.1 then using Odin on the Virtual Windows on your Linux OS

I have not attempted any flashing at all. Also there is an Odin I believe for Linux. I had thought I used something similar because I rooted the Galaxy S2 Tmobile Prepaid phone I had last.

here is a link to the specs
by the wording use in the Detailed review it seems to be a newer version of the S3 that boost have that comes with 4.3 instead of 4.1.2 and it turns out mine was also one of these "updated" models even though on the back of the Phone it doesn't show the "T" now i would suggest flashing Philz Recovery in Odin that has an Option to root the Stock Rom that your on....
and the SPH-L710 came out in July 2012 and the SPH-L710T came out on May of this year....
Can you give me links and a brief run down on what to do please? A little unsure about this since the model is so new and not many it seems like have done anything with it. Im thinking i just want to root but if a ROM that works is out i might go for it after a backup. I have ROM manager premium also just so you know to handle that.

well before when i had NDC i used TowelRoot to root it and that worked but there are some with even newer s3's from boost have reported it not to work mind you i got this one like 2-3 months after boost made it so the 4.4.2 that you have might be tighter locked up with Knox....but here is the link to Philz Recovery this one is made for all US s3 variants so this might work to get you root if anything it will work to help you flash a pre-rooted rom if that's what you'll want instead. and just read through the link that i posted to know what to do to flash it
Thank you ☺

uncheck reboot then click start and wait for it to finish you'll know by it saying pass or something similar now keep your phone connected via usb then press and hold the power button and let it turn off then just use the Power+Home+Volume up keys to boot into the recovery and Odin/Jodin will say that it was successful
It says i need a PIT file

No i dont. This is in Jodin. I put the tar md5 in PDA category as instructed and it asks for a PIT file

okay once your in Philz recovery touch where it says "PhilZ Settings" then touch Re-root System (SuperSU) and then it will root your stock rom.....but just flashing the recovery wont give you root
will flashing Philz modify the modem?
Question, I've done this before only shortly after messing up the radio. Will flashing Philz modify the modem? I don't mind tripping knox (educate me further if I lack precaution). would like to attempt this again as I plan on backing up completely per mount in the future + further modifying & building roms for this model. (There are people out there that are stuck with no radio from flashing incompatible roms backing up the modem & hosting it in a flashable zip will be my first task) thanks in advance :fingers-crossed:

flashing the recovery it self won't change or erase the modem at all....flashing a different modem on the other hand will.....now if you have stock NDC with stock kernel on your S3 but you flash the ND8 modem then you'll get bad signal and what not but if you have the custom kernel from Ktoonsez then all will be good; the same can be said for stock ND8 with stock kernel on your S3 and the NDC modem is here and can be flashed in the recovery but the ND8 modem can only be flashed through Odin in the stock rom.tar
Thanks, That's as I thought. I just wanted to cover my bases. Any tips for backing up the modem (triband)?

That is great news. Congratulations. Question please. Did it ask you for a PIT file? I am on Linux Mint so will be using Heimdall or Jodin(web based ODIN). I managed to connect Heimdall and download the PIT file from the device. I am assuming if it asks for a PIT file I give it the one I made from the phone and I am good to go. Does anyone else believe this to be true? I should be good?
Any preference for Jodin or Heimdall?

[Q] What is the best method to unroot my Note 4?

Stupid me, didn't read up enough to realize that rooting the Note 4 breaks OTA updates. It looks like I can pull the update down via Kies 3. But before I do that I want to make sure I'm going in the right direction.
So far I've found two options, would any of these work to allow OTA updates to work again?
1) Use Kies 3 and install the update
2) Reinstall the original ROM following the instructions on this page...
http://androidromupdate.com/2014/11/07/n910pvpu1anie-sprint-samsung-note-4-sm-n910p-stock-firmware/
3) hit the "full unroot" button in SuperSU Free
Any recommendations guys?

There is already an updated stock rom floating around. Do you have Odin downloaded to your computer?

1. My phone was stock rooted, I upgraded using Kies and the phone status changed from custom to Official. Then I rerooted and it changed back to custom again. That leads me to believe that if you upgrade using Kies and don't re-root it will accept OTA updates again. I can't confirm that though. (The Knox flag of course remained tripped, no way to fix that as of now)
2. Don't know, but I would expect any full stock Odin would allow OTA as long as the status is Official.
3. NO, I tried the full unroot button on SuperSU and the status remains Custom, and it won't even check for OTA.
Kies was very easy for me, I didn't have to unroot and at least in my case all data and apps were retained. With Odin you will end up with a factory fresh phone and have to restore all your data and apps.
That answers my question. I'll try the kids method and re root later. Thanks for the help

and did the OTA do anything for ya??? good or bad??
Quick reply, in case someone finds this looking for a similar solution. I removed root completely via the app and then updated via Kies, can't tell yet if I'll be able to OTA update from now on but it was a successful update.

Let me get this straight...
You were rooted on NK2 and plugged into Kies and just installed the OB7 without having to flash to factory and update OTA and it worked good? I do have a custom rom installed though.
Once i am re-rooted on OB7 I will not be installing anything but ROMs so I do not need to worry about OTA using Kies would make this sooooooo much easier.

Is your phone SM-N910P or SM-N910F?
You posted in SPRINT Q&A FORUM.
If phone truly is SM-N910F, please post in correct forum.
SM-N910P? Download tar from this post below, the md5 is 68EC06027A3ECFE8471263256B139257
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62230599&postcount=1
I'd suggest that one for faster download but only for SM-N910P.
Edit: never mind; try KIES instead.

Got it. So it was rooted at one point with another firmware on it? Did KIES emergency recovery do anything for it?
So I'm guessing it has stock recovery but won't flash or boot at this point. If so, boot into recovery, factory reset, reboot recovery and factory reset again. Power down, remove battery, wait 30 seconds and boot into download mode and flash the stock tar with auto reboot disabled (preferably one that has a md5 checked against downloaded zip, then drag the tar.md5 image out of opened archive with 7zip). You'd only have F. Reset Time enabled in Odin options.
Pass or fail, power down, pull battery, wait 30 seconds, boot into download mode and flash stock tar with auto reboot enabled plus the F. Reset Time enabled. Close Odin with each flash attempt.
One other thing that has worked in the past is considering the suggestions given, use your imagination to try similar things with custom recovery or flashing parts of the stock tar like extracted bootloader and kernel and (emergency) recovering with KIES. Or even flash CWM recovery, write everything, reboot recovery, wipe again, flash a rooted SM-N910F ROM, un-root it and wipe everything, power down, pull battery and flash stock tar. Take notes of attempt to avoid trying the same thing twice until you succeed. I think you will eventually get it. If so report, the steps that you think were primarily responsible for success.
Best wishes for success and return of the phone.

thanks for the info it seems the main problem i have is getting the valid file. everyone i try fails with 2 mb left or a 1.7gb file turns into 3.2gb i have paid for sammobile super download and also rapid transfer but both are either corrupted files or just jargon. The one from rapid transfer almost worked until it got near the end and as the file was 3.2 gb it was too large.
i need the correct file for an SM910F unlocked from a reliable source and the genuine file everywhere i try fails or is a virus.

These should also be trusted sources for SM-N910F.

I think your ISP may be contributing to bad downloads. You may have to download from another location.
SMH; the other suggestions stemmed from previous difficulties with other users after crashing Odin with wrong stock tar. Hopefully your case is as simple as getting a good download for the SM-910F.
