[Q] rooting and install CM10 on kindle fire 2 - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

I rooted my kindle fire 2 on firmware 10.4.6 i have super su on here and as soon as i open it. it says it needs to be updated " the su binary needs to be updated continue>? i clicked continue and i selected normal. but then it says failed.
How do i get cm 10 on here? i need step by step instructions. not links to old articles.

The information is there.
I would give you the links but the articles are old (and 100% still accurate).
don't expect to be spoonfed here.

Im not asking to be spoon-fed here i would just like the links to be 100% working like the above one does not. i have to restore my kindle and the restoration links aren't working.
Why in the first place would you say the information is there when it is clearly not.

If you're looking for the restore stuff then you didn't read the whole thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43569633
That's MY POST. That's why I know the info is there.
If you are looking for other information it really is all there. Ask a specific question and I'll give you the link... The only reason I didn't before was due to the attitude of your posts. You're being VERY RUDE for someone who wants help.
Sorry the LINKS aren't 100% working but ALL the answers are here somewhere.
If you still want cm11 (the most recent at this point).. You'll find the directions to be up to date and very very accurate.

[Q] Rooting Problems - PLEASE help. Gracias!

I am having so many problems trying to root. Im going crazy.
Quick info - I'm running 1.47.651.1 and have hoot .79, not .76
I've read all the threads here, and over at the androidforums, in regards to rooting. I've tried the ota simpleroot method, toasts method, etc. I've followed step for step w/ YouTube videos, etc. NO LUCK.
Currently I've just got a basic root, with unrEVOked3, with the clockwork mod. I only.used unrEvOked for a partial root, because every method has failed me so far. I'm a wreck! I've done one nandroid backup, after installing unrEvOked. I know that I need NAND support unlocked in order to flash custom roms, such as cm6. This is what I am trying to accomplish now. As ive said, I've tried several methods, and have done all the reading my brain can handle. All my drivers are up to date, including my adb drivers. I've got the Android sdk installed as well.
Simpleroot seems to work up until step #4, but then after rebooting, & going into the hboot screen - where it should load the pc36img file, & I should see the blue progress bar along the right side. Unfortunately, this never happens. Instead, it says the image cant be found, & displays that in green text, then just takes me back to the hboot menu. Yes, I am in charge mode. Yes, usb debugging is on. -- what's this I read about being in HTC sync mode? Is that crucial for performing step 4? i havent read this anywhere else, so im just curious. Trying to explain my situation/scenario as best I can, bc I'm really frustrated trying to root my new evo. I do have the HTC sync installed, FYI.
I know unrEvOked worked successfully, & I've at least got a partial root, since i can wifi tether no problem. I just need too unlock the nand. I end up going in circles reading the forum posts related to my issue, as they all say use simpleroot ota to gain nand access, or part 2 of toasts method. I've tried, trust me. I wouldn't be posting here if I wasn't rly stuck.
Please, someone help! I would be forever grateful if you can get me full root and gain nand access.
Everyone else is doing it, i just want to join in!
Thanks.
If there's any other information I can provide, i would be more than happy to assist. I've seen others with my same problem as well, but haven't found a solid fix yet. So thanks again on behalf of them as well!

Stop being a rent-a-mod.
Have you installed .net framework 4.0, htc sync, and disabled virus scanners on the machine you are using?
There were no error messages you overlooked on step 3 of simpleroot?
Does step 4 bring you to recovery by itself or does it sit there hanging and you manually do it yourself?
Use this method it only requires ADB and the 2nd part of Toast
Utilize the thread mentioned below. I am a new user for posting and can't do links yet but it has method in which you utilize shell commands via adb.

Thanks for your honest help. Sorry this isn't in the q&a like the above user suggested. This seemed to be the place where I would receive the most help.
Yes, I've got framework 4.0 installed, and HTC sync. All virus protection is disabled.
There were no error messages on any of the steps. I've followed it multiple times, very carefully. Even step for step with YouTube videos.
Step 4 does not bring me to recovery. Sometimes it reboots, then reboot again into hboot, but doesn't load the pc36img as it should. Just brings me back to the menu. Other times on step 4, it will reboot, but then won't reboot again into the hboot.
Hope I've answered your question.
Thanks again to all, for the help.

+1 I came into development on Saturday and there were 8-10 questions/comments at one point. I mean really with the attitudes of people what's the point of having a Q&A section... really? And to top that there seems to be this underlying assumption that if you post a question in dev that you'll get more(?), better(?) help. *shrug* Honestly, people can call me rent-a-mod, or that annoying guy who jumps on people if they post a question in Dev, I don't really care.... I get annoyed when I specifically come to a subforum (Dev in this case) expecting to see a particular subject and instead I find myself double checking to make sure I haven't clicked Q&A by mistake.

I can understand it being annoying, I am in no way saying it is acceptable. I am simply referring to the attitude people have taken toward the noobs of xda. It is not necessary.
Your statement quoted above is bull****. 9/10 threads in this section ALWAYS contain things like [ROM], [KERNAL], [METHOD], [HOW-TO], [PROGRAM] OR [TUTORIAL].
Honestly, you are trying to say that you come into this section after knowingly clicking on it, get confused as to where you are and it upsets you so much that you have to be a **** and tarnish the reputation of these forums to new users?

Next time I will take a screenshot since Toast moved all of the threads now. And, NO, I knew I was in dev, I was being sarcastic and trying to make a point.
Also, I used no profanity in any of my posts, although I was direct, and simply stated what I felt. I do not feel that any of my posts degrade or tarnish anyones name. Truth be told my very first post in XDA was in dev asking a question, and someone posted "wrong forum" or whatever.... and it was a learning moment. I didn't feel degraded or tarnished. I guess these days there are a lot of sensitive people on XDA. read: everyone should mind their p's and q's. *shrug*

Hey,
I'm pretty new here but I used Simpleroot for my first root as well. Sounds like if it is not loading the PC36IMG file it's either named incorrectly or it's not on the SD card. Can you verify that you have a file PC36IMG.zip in the root of your SD card?

Yes, I've got the pc36img.zip on my SD card, and it is named correctly. I've even tried formatting my card.
As to the 'argument' that's going on within this thread, its pointless. SORRY I didn't post in the correct place. Not like I'm the first. No need to bicker back & forth about it, that's just childish.

Rooted my phone but no rooted applications work

Hi folks,
I rooted my phone but no applications that require root access work.
I am currently running the 40.2 update on my verizon nexus.
I tried wifi_tether_v3_1-pre111.apk, rom tool box, root checker and root toolbox.
Rooted applications always say that my phone doesn't have root access or a kernel is missing.
When I do a fastboot oem lock, it shows that my phone is unlocked. I am quite confused as to why no programs that require root work for this phone.
Is their any programs out there that can verify that phone is rooted. Is their any technique other then what I tried that can verify it.
I am stuck and I dont know what else to do.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I cannot be the only one.
Simply unlocking the boot loader does not give you root. Check the stickies in the dev forum a guide

You need to install the root binaries to achieve root, look in the general thread and theirs a guide to show you how to root with superboot r3. Once you run it in adb, it will install the binaries and superuser apk. Then after go to the market and search busybox, install the app and let it install the busy box file.
It is impossible that your missing a kernel if your phone can boot. The programs you installed to check "root" are not compatible with the phone. For future reference, check the stickies in the general thread.

Clockworkmod Recovery?

I did some forum searching & Googling but I'm not able to find a reliable, working method of getting CWM recovery on the Note II. I want to keep the stock ROM, but not the stock recovery. I'm rooted with stock recovery right now.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
look harder. Perhaps find a thread talking about root in the at&t noteII general forum.

"look harder"? That doesn't help me much. I used that "search in this forum" feature, where I typed in "clockworkmod" and came up with no results. A threat talking about rooting doesn't necessarily mean it will discuss CWM (I also checked the thread here for information on CWM, since that's the root method I used, but no dice). Not really sure which thread you want me to play hide & seek with.
Sorry to say but the person who responded to you is right... look for a thread that contains root for the note II
Really? You want to root your phone, but you are incapable of following simple directions? I did everything but give you a direct link to the thread. I told you which forum, which subforum, and a keyword to look for in the thread title.
If you aren't able to handle it, please DO NOT root your device and please DO NOT install a non-stock recovery.

Which part about my post is rude? I think you might be misinterpreting...
I'm very serious that if you are unable to find the post with the information you want based on the instructions I gave, that you have a high risk of screwing up your phone by flashing stuff on it. That's not being rude. That's trying to be helpful. Asking you to PLEASE not flash your phone is so I (and others like myself) don't have to spend the time trying to help you fix your phone afterwards (and so you don't have to spend the time asking for that help.)
Not everything on these forums is spelled out and spoon-fed to users. It's assumed that they have a certain amount of innate ability and prior knowledge. Lack of that ability and knowledge results in broken phones. I'm trying to help someone like that in another thread - they flashed the wrong thing to their phone and now, basically, they are screwed.
Granted, I might not come off as "newbie friendly" or even "user friendly." I'm an engineer. I'm one of the folks that make the things that people like you flash. For some reason people like me don't usually come off as being "nice."
I'm going to try (again) to be nice. Here's a link to a post I think it'd be good for you to read. This post tries to explain in a different way what I'm trying to say here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
I suspect that if/when you understand that post, you'll better understand my replies.
take care and good luck
Gary
Thanks, it's sometimes hard to read tone on here, so i apologize for any misunderstandings.
I think i have a really bad time finding information, not because I'm a newbie at flashing, but probably more so due to the fact that development in this phone is so fresh, there isn't much information to centralize yet. But once i find the information i need i can usually handle the work involved.
I ended up finding the post you were talking about (well, i can only assume). Unfortunately i didn't find a walkthrough or step by step instructions. But at least i know a better place to find the information.

Does it have to be cwm? Because for rooting, chainfire has cf root. And for recovery, twrp already supports our device. It's all in the original development sub forum. Won't be hard to find either. Those two things are the only threads existent there for now

Actually, that's a good idea. I had used the CWM Recovery originally on my i317, but found that when I tried to restore a backup I made with it, that nothing was actually restored. TWRP, on the other hand, seems to work okay backing up and restoring.

Twrp has come a long way. To be fully honest, I kinda hated it at first, I don't even have a clue why, since I didn't try it prior to forming those feelings about it. But then I actually got to flash it, after some self convincing, on my s2 lte and it grew on me very quickly. And now, I prefer it over cwm

If you need exFAT then use CWM which comes with CF_root which you can find the Original Dev forums. Use Odin, click on PDA then select the CF-Root.*.att file. It's that easy.
One thing about TWRP is that it doesn't support exFAT formatted SDCards, so if you have a 64GB like most folks on here & need exFAT for larger than 4GB file size, then CWM is the only way to go.
I think i may just wait a bit until more options become available. I don't need it right away. I'd rather sick with CWM since that is what I'm familiar with.

That's entirely up to you. Although I would suggest giving twrp a go, even just to try it out. My favorite features in it are the option to name your backup in recovery prior to creating it, and the fact that it actually does things faster than cwm

(Q). Help

Ok so I've been looking for a rooting method for my Kindle Fire( non hd ) with 10.3.0 fw
you mention the forum, ive looked in it. but im not able to find a single place which provides a method for that. so my question is this: is there a working method to root a Kindle Fire (nonHD) 10.3.0 fw without a factory cable? im assuming my KF is a 2nd gen model (it is, isnt it?). if so, please explain or provide a link for that.
also, every place i see says : ** ONLY FOR 1ST GEN. TRY FOR 2ND GEN AT YOUR OWN RISK **. it says so on the TWRP help forums and even the KFU help forums. what do i do??
Im not new to using the downloading apk method to get apps, but off lately whenever i download an apk from silk browser onto my KF and the notification pops that the download is complete, i click on the notification which is what you do to install that apk. but when i hit the notification, *nothing* happens. absolutely nothing. the notification disappears and the app is not installed. why? :/
regarding the problem with apks, i even mailed it to myself and tried downloading it from the stock email app, but no, even from the email app, the APK (as an attachment) refuses to start downloading
any help is appreciated
I believe you're in the wrong forum. That's why you only see "ONLY FOR 1ST GEN"

I don't think you understand my point, brother.
I said you are in the wrong forum. This is the 1stGen KF forum.
Your device is 2ndGen.
I can write up an instructions but again, it's for 1stGen since I don't have the 2ndGen.
Follow instructions for device A to device B is UNWISE.
You don't want to brick your KF and you know I don't want indirectly bricking your device.
My suggestion once again: go to the 2ndGen forum and ask for help, I'm sure there are many experts there will help you through.

[Q] HardBricked HD 8.9??

Is it possible I hard bricked my hd 8.9? I used kffa to flash the 7.3 img but then flashed a 7.2.3 bootloader. They were both for the 8.9 but is that possible to still hard brick it? Or is it possibly a dead battery?

You know, we can go back and forth like this forever, but I doubt we will get anywhere unless you start to provide some usable information. No one here can see your device so the help you receive is dependent on what you tell us about the situation.
So far, it has been established that you used the KFFA to flash some image and the 7.2.3 bootloader, and as a result of this, your device is stuck in fastboot. Based on this information, I can tell you that your battery is probably not dead.
With that being said, considering the fact that you posted this question in the 8.9" KFHD forum, yet made it clear that you flashed the 7.2.3 bootloader (7" KFHD), I'm a little concerned. Perhaps you should clarify before things get worse for you.
Also, you claim to be a "noob at this", but that in itself doesn't help very much. There are varying degrees of "noobs" that visit this site, and it can easily be argued by some that even I fall into that category. Perhaps instead of using a general statement to explain what you don't know, it might be best to to explain what you do know and understand, so no one here has to make assumptions about your current level of experience.
Other helpful information would be...exactly what you were doing and why you were doing it that brought you to this situation in the first place. What have you done to try and resolve this problem on your own? What problems have you run into as a result? The more information you are able to provide about your situation, the easier it will be for others to provide the appropriate guidance so you can fix your device (on your own) in a timely and efficient manner.

Ok I had uninstalled something that I shouldn't have so I downloaded the KFFA and tried flashing the system and the recovery and I read that I also had to flash the bootloader as well so I went on goo.im and downloaded one that I found on hashcodes profile for the Kindle Fire HD. Judging from what you said about 7.2.3 being for the 7" worries me. I thought that all of hashcodes items in that particular section were for the 8.9" . It would boot into fastboot just fine until I flashed that one and now it is just a black screen and won't power on for anything. I'm a rookie rooter at this. I was able to root and install 2nd bootloader on my original Kindle Fire 2nd gen. I've been able to root my xperia tl lt30at. I've been able to root my razr m xt907 as well as unlock the bootloader and install custom roms. I'm a noob when it comes to adb and fastboot and coding etc. I hope that helps.

Now that paints a more realistic picture of what's going on.
Unfortunately, you made a fatal mistake when installing a HFDH7 bootloader onto a KFHD8.9. There is a discussion in the KF2 Help & Troubleshooting forum about getting direct access to the eMMC and re-flashing the appropriate partition images to restore devices such as yours, but it's still a work in progress and there is very little information on it regarding other devices. At this point, it may be your only hope.
